SM G930U overheated? - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

Hi everyone, I recently have bought a Samsung Galaxy S7 (SM G930U, Snapdragon 820 variant).
I suspect the phone overheats and it goes into throttiling. I attached the screenshots of some tests I have done.
Can you confirm if my phone overheats?
If yes, what is a solution to the problem or can I do something before sending the phone back?
Thank you all for your attention,
Riccardo

If your phone over heats it will shut down prior to any damage. If it isn't doing this it's not overheating.

Hi, thanks for your reply.
In case of overheating, the phone does go into throttiling first?
I think the phone goes into throttling because if I start a stress test, the phone lags terribly (with another phones like Samsung Galaxy A8, A50 or Galaxy S9 this doesn't happen).
I would like to know, is it all normal that my S7 goes into throttling or is my device defective?

Yes throttling is a feature of the Snap Dragon variant I'm afraid.

Are you sure? I believe this was a feature of the Snapdragon 810. I saw some videos showing that the Snapdragon 820 does not throttle and I didn't find much information on the internet.
However, if I start "heavy" games like Asphalt 9 the phone does not throttle, even if I set the details to the maximum

If you search up Samsung Galaxy S7 cooling you can find an article by Samsung describing how they cool their phones by underclocking the CPU, but I don't think it seems to cool the phone down that much. If you can, root your phone and underclock the CPU with Kernel Aditor. Maybe it might be better.

Hi, thanks for the reply. I didn't find the article you told me.
I believe that there are no modified kernels for my phone (SM G930U) and, therefore, I can't underclock the CPU.

Does LG G Flex 2 still worth it in 2016 for $170?

My local online shop sell this phone for only $170 brand new, which is steal for a snapdragon 810 devices(At least in my country). The model is H959 with 32gb storage and 2gb ram i believe. Im upgrading from lumia 1520. Does it worth it? Thanks in advance (Sorry for my bad english)
170$? US Dollars? I would say shut up and take my money!
Even if you have to know that the development is really bad because no Android6root and no bootloaderunlock - for now, and probably forever. Thank you lg!
On top of that, the screen brightness range is a joke.. A bad one. Don't get me wrong, it's sharp and clear but during day it's not THAT Bright and at night it's like looking right into the Sun.
Overheating and lag is gone for me since android6 but root is gone too so... Meh :/
Battery is okay but don't expect too much - but you still can get 2 days if you handle it right.
Camera is still far above average I would say (good at night, ois, laserfocus, even 4k, but ****ty slomo compared to iPhones)
Helpful?
From H955 16gb
Edit: still would buy again though.. It's still best bang for the bucks and literally physically indestructible
No. I had nothing but problems with mine. Regretted buying it so much. I especially hated the battery life, the software and that you can't turn double tap to wake off unless you installed a 3rd party app. If you have to buy it, I'd go for the 3gb ram version. I had the 2gb version and the user experience was miserable.
I replaced mine with a Oneplus 3 and never looked back.

I have to disagree regarding getting the 3GB H950 over the 2GB versions unless you are a AT&T customer, for the following reasons:-
- Even if you are an AT&T customer, the H950 is stuck on 5.1.1. and the battery life sucks.
- If you are not an AT&T customer, the H950 is on 5.0.1 and you can only get it upgraded by having an AT&T sim card in the phone and connected to there network. Take it from me, getting to even 5.1.1 is a nightmare. :crying:
Totally agree though regarding the One Plus 3, the user experience is second to none. :victory:
Buy it if is H955 !!!!! Update to Marshmallow and enjoy it ! Super fast, not overheat more then other LG for example LG3, great camera, great display, great design .
I used before LG Optimus One ( 2 years) Samsung Galaxy S2 ( 3 years) LG G3 (1 year) all rooted using with custom roms, so I know what I am talking about !
H955 its a very good phone only with Marshmallow because let you using other programs , like google phone changing your default dialer , google messaging , so I don't need root for this phone.

But does the H955 work on GSM carriers like AT&T?
And how can we tell if we have 2 gb ram or 3gb ram?
Here is an Amazon url to H955 in USA

Agreed. It depends on what you need, I guess.
The thing i hated the most about the 2gb version is the apps and tabs reloading in chrome or other web browsers. It reloads every time I leave a tab for more than 20 seconds. I have to use this secure website for work and would have to log back in every time the website reloads. So i would be on this website, pulling some information off it to send a text to my client, go back for additional information, and it would force me to log in again and search the database again. Rinse and repeat about 20 times a day. I think the lack of ram and the ram management was responsible for it. I would have never expected that from a 2015 flagship-ish phone.

I feel you. I used to have these sorts of issues on the Nexus 9. Things improved when I switched to Habit Browser as that seemed to be less RAM intensive than bloated Chrome. There were also some custom roms on the Nexus 9 which would employ zRAM to effectively buy another 0.5GB. Maybe something you could look at? I also went for the H950 for the Mrs due to being concerned that 2GB wasn't enough on the other versions. Its starting to feel like you cant win either way with the GF2. :crying:

Hi I am considering getting a Flex 2. I went from considering ordering a H950 At&t variant from abroad because of the extra storage and RAM. However after seeing that it will probably never get marshmallow and probably has more bloatware on it than other versions, I am thinking that even the weaker H955 might work better with Marshmallow since it should be a lot more optimized for the SD810 SOC and maybe better RAM management too. I would appreciate if you could give your opinion on some things:
- What is the bloatware situation on the Flex 2 Marshmallow ROM out of the box?
- Have you seen an increase in speed on everyday use( compared to 5.1.1/11)? Such as opening apps and multitasking.
- Have you seen a decrease in heating and throttling issues?
-Have you seen an increase in battery life?
- Have you tried any low or high end gaming? If so what is the performance like on Marshmallow?
- Has the minimum brightness issue been fixed?
- Have you tried different launchers to see if there has been an improvement in performance?
Many thanks

Possibility to disable uninstall / reinstall LG apps if you don't like.

Yes

Yes

Same, my record is more then 120 Hours but if you use intense you drain the battery more quickly.

Not tried.

What issue ? On 0% still see the display very good.

Nova Launcher work great.

Generally speaking the reviews and users report that at min brightness it was way too bright so for viewing in the darkness it is just too hard on the eyes.

confused

Hi all,
I'm confused and very hesitant about upgrading , I have a note 4 and like I said I'm very hesitant and reluctant to upgrade because I don't want to be a slave to a charger.....this is the number one reasons I hate Iphones besides not being able to expand the memory you can't switch out the battery, and you become as I stated a slave to a charger. Also I want to know if you are rooted & running the latest software does it make a difference what device you have? I know a friend of mine who has an s6 and I know one who has a note 5&6 their constantly charging it because the battery is constantly dying. can anyone tell me why I should upgrade to a note 5 if I cant expand the memory?
Can anyone tell me weather I'm doing the right thing, Or can anyone tell me anything to rest aside my fears concerning upgrading. ......thanks

How did you root it w/o being able to take off the back or taking out the battery especially if it overheats ?
A friend of mine just got a brand new note 5 & a s7 & she's complaining the battery is over heating & dying quick.

Well, I was trying to help. Perhaps a better choice would be a Samsung Jitterbug.
The Note5 is an amazing phone. I wish there weren't as many variants around the world, so that the development was consolidated, though...
Anyway! You don't need to take out the battery to root. You cannot access the battery with this phone. If it overheats, and I don't think mine ever has, it will just shut off (theoretically), or you can hold down power, home, and down volume buttons to reboot it.
If you wait a few weeks, the market will be flooded with used Note5's, so you might be able to pick one up for cheap.
Just wait until the Note 8

ROFL. I'm dead!

Can someone install CPU-Z app and tell me how many cores are present?

On the first page of the app it says mine has the Samsung exynos 8 core chip but under it only shows 4 cores. Any of my other Samsung phones with similar Exynos chips show 8 cores. I had a problem a while back when my wife dropped my tablet. Right after that I started having slow charging issues. I replaced the battery and I noticed I was getting a hot spot on the back of the tablet around the middle when I held it.
That problem has seemed to stop but the tablet doesnt seem as quick as it used to. It really lags opening programs and switch apps etc.
CPU-Z only shows 4 cores so I am wondering if one of the chips has died or something weird like that? Thanks for any assistance if you could let me know if you show 8 cores in the app. Must be the Exynos chip tablet too thanks.

Ok thanks. That's how mine shows too. It still plays games very good it just seems laggy multitasking. I have never done a reset so maybe I should try that. When it got dropped it only slid off a coffee table onto carpet but banged against a leg when it hit.

Unlocked Performance Capped

Hello, is there a way to unlock the performance capped of A51? Unfortunately Samsung capped its performance to 70% when Power Mode is "Optimized" I hope we can port "High Performance" mode for this phone, this is by far the slowest 6 GB Android phone that I used : This phone has lots of potential but it looks like Samsung opted to slow it down feature wise....

Same, but look at it this way.
t's a cheap phone so you can buy a new phone any time soon.
Plus you don't really have to be careful with your phone like you would with a flagship device.
I'm planning to get the note 10 in the summer and give this phone to my mom

After using it for a while I'm also truly amazed by the performance. I really have much hope for future mid tier samsung phones
Disabled the initial bloat and turned down the animation times, and damn, it's at least as responsive as the locked S9 my new A51 is replacing.
Turn off Auto Optimisation in Device Care - this action is speed up your Galaxy A51 and then add to the auto-optimization exceptions in the settings One Ui Home and biometrics apps.

Question Overheating and drop to 60Hz

Hi,
I have been using my Xperia 5 III for a week now. Everything is well but the phone overheats when going about completely normal day to day tasks. Just the use of a slightly more intensive application like Uber heats the phone up.
When this happens, the screen automatically drops to 60Hz. I cannot seem to disable this 'feature'. While charging, needless to say, the phone pretty much stays in 60Hz for the first half of charging time due to overheating.
Is the above normal? I don't seem to see any background updates. I would not mind the overheating if the display would just remain at 120Hz. Will rooting or modding be able to overcome this?
Cheers!
not at my dayly use of the X5 III
just went hot at first day of many installations but after than not anymore.
Found a good solution to the overheating: rooted (Magisk) and used Franco Kernel Manager to disable the big core and a couple of the middle ones, thing still absolutely flies, and now never gets hot.

Nothing intensive. Just Uber, Teamviewer and Google Maps. Surprisingly, games do not get the phone hot. I have tried both the German and Hong Kong Xperia 5 IIIs. Same for both.

Can say the same. Many reboots, fastboot, flashmode and back and my Phone is "cold".
Had never a Problem with hot or warm device
And still, having to root and disable a core or something isn't a solution I'm content with. Especially because the 5 II didn't have those problems. I understand they do this to preserve the battery but honestly it didn't really matter with my old phone and I used it a lot when it was hot.
I recently upgraded my 5 II to a 5 III and although I still don't wanna believe it, it's getting pretty obvious that the phone throttles the FPS from 120 to 60 Hz. The Xperia 5 II only did this sometimes when you were charging and gaming simulatenously.
However with the 5 III it sometimes tends to throttle just when you are surfing through the net or using some apps. During gaming without charging it also throttles often.
mine got super hot in like 5 min of instagram or youtube vids. It also tends to get hot and throttle a bit on music playback, i'm starting to assume that is not normal
I haven't noticed any of those with my 5III. It has behaved like my 5II for the last 6 months. Only issue I've had with heat is if I'm shooting a lot of 4k video with the CinePro app in the direct sunlight in the Texas summer.
Only gets hot when streaming.
Besides that, Ive never seen the hot temps message pop up.
