Hi,
I have been using my Xperia 5 III for a week now. Everything is well but the phone overheats when going about completely normal day to day tasks. Just the use of a slightly more intensive application like Uber heats the phone up.
When this happens, the screen automatically drops to 60Hz. I cannot seem to disable this 'feature'. While charging, needless to say, the phone pretty much stays in 60Hz for the first half of charging time due to overheating.
Is the above normal? I don't seem to see any background updates. I would not mind the overheating if the display would just remain at 120Hz. Will rooting or modding be able to overcome this?
Cheers!
not at my dayly use of the X5 III
just went hot at first day of many installations but after than not anymore.
Found a good solution to the overheating: rooted (Magisk) and used Franco Kernel Manager to disable the big core and a couple of the middle ones, thing still absolutely flies, and now never gets hot.

Wow great! Any side effects on incompatible apps, instability issues or bugs? And did you benchmark before and after?
i don't get it...my X5 III did't even gets warm
what ya doing with the device to get it hot.??

Nothing intensive. Just Uber, Teamviewer and Google Maps. Surprisingly, games do not get the phone hot. I have tried both the German and Hong Kong Xperia 5 IIIs. Same for both.

Sounds like typical Sony's quality control issue to me.

Can say the same. Many reboots, fastboot, flashmode and back and my Phone is "cold".
Had never a Problem with hot or warm device
And still, having to root and disable a core or something isn't a solution I'm content with. Especially because the 5 II didn't have those problems. I understand they do this to preserve the battery but honestly it didn't really matter with my old phone and I used it a lot when it was hot.
I recently upgraded my 5 II to a 5 III and although I still don't wanna believe it, it's getting pretty obvious that the phone throttles the FPS from 120 to 60 Hz. The Xperia 5 II only did this sometimes when you were charging and gaming simulatenously.
However with the 5 III it sometimes tends to throttle just when you are surfing through the net or using some apps. During gaming without charging it also throttles often.
mine got super hot in like 5 min of instagram or youtube vids. It also tends to get hot and throttle a bit on music playback, i'm starting to assume that is not normal
I haven't noticed any of those with my 5III. It has behaved like my 5II for the last 6 months. Only issue I've had with heat is if I'm shooting a lot of 4k video with the CinePro app in the direct sunlight in the Texas summer.
Only gets hot when streaming.
Besides that, Ive never seen the hot temps message pop up.

Like, even just using it as a phone, it heats up. Is this normal?
I get the same thing, it gets really really really hot. When I use it as gps, or go online especially.
yeah, its normal. never heard of it not happening
I cooked breakfast on mine this morning.
I put mine in my pocket... made myself sterile.

I've got a Fuze and it was white hot too. I took it back after about a week and just got a replacement. This new one is not heating up. Although now the problem I have with this one is the 3G connection is not as strong as it was before AND google maps doesn't work for sh!t!! I'm looking for a fix.
Marc
Sounds like your 3G isn't really connecting, make sure you try all the forum posts on enabling and forcing 3G/HSDPA connections. Whenever I run mine on 3G it becomes a nice little hand warmer. Force it down to GPRS and it's not hot and has a useless data connection (but good for when the battery is almost dead).

Normal? Extreme heat in an electronic device is normal? I don't think so. If any device you have is getting warm enough to be of concern TAKE IT BACK AND EXCHANGE IT!
BTW - mine doesn't get hot. I can feel warmth if it's charging, for instance, but I wouldn't call it hot.

Pretty much yes they do especially when using heavy power draining functions ie: Wifi, GPS, etc.
Some of the claims here of cooking breakfast, becoming sterile maybe slightly over the top and I have never been actually burnt by the device. But I have yet to use a HTC device that did not get hot when using the above functions for a period of time.
Just my experience and I certainly would not be using one if it boiled my nuts.
It´s not normal for a electonic device to become that hot, some heat is normal but not EXTREME HEAT!
Try flashing another radio and see if that helps, if not then you should send it back for repair!

mmmm, ever put something made of plastic near the heat exhaust vent on your laptop?? Most modern electronic devices that are based on a CPU generate exteme heat that is why they have cooling, heat sinks, etc.
I'm certainly not going to get into an argument about this but the bottom line here is that they do generate certain levels of heat. It definately should not be enough to burn you though.

Yes but a laptop has X amount more power then a phone! And you know, if the laptop didnt have a FAN to cool it down it would not last you even a few minutes!
However, our phones are designed without fans and are not supposed to get EXTREMLY HOT!
Let´s face it, no electronic device should get extremly hot, if it does then something is wrong, or something will be wrong with it soon!
Mine gets warm, but never hot even when using the GPS or wifi for over an hour. During a 20 minute telephone conversation it will get warm, but again not hot.
after 20 min of phone call, connected to wifi, on ac adapter, it got warm, never hot.
the hottest mine got was looking at vid porn via SkyFire browser. It looked really great... but oh man... the phone was sizzlin'.
Well I don't know if my phone is getting warm or hot. It's not an unpleasant warmth, just odd.
And Skyfire? I thought Opera Mobile was the preferred browser of choice.
My phone doesn't get extremely hot, mildly warm while surfing net over 3G, but that is it.

This is absolutely not normal and is one of the reasons i returned mine and went back to my Treo. I've used lots of high end phones and this is the first and only one that just starts toasting by itself when doing simple stuff.
Strange thing is that everyone i know with a T.P complains about the same thing. I could be watching Youtube for less than 5 mins and it starts boiling..what gives. I Youtube on my Treo (via Coreplayer) and it never gets hot.
I'd say this is a problem or issue with most of all T.Pro's. Sad really, such decent hardware specs.
I've also been experiencing heat coming from the back of the device, but only when I hold calls over around 15 minutes or if I'm using the internet extensively. I also notice it can create a good amount of heat when it charges. Usually when electronic devices have excessive heat it's due to a build up of dust.

So what am I to think? I have a few guys telling me NO! And the rest of you saying "It's normal" and ONE guy saying he exchanged his in and his new one DOES NOT GET HOT AT ALL!!!
what the hell!! I have like two weeks until my 30 days is up.
I just bought Samsung Skyrocket phone from ATT, initially after about 20 mins of video or voice chat phone was getting really heat up at the back by the camera. I exchanged the device but still the same issue. Is this just how Skyrocket works or is there a setting which can be changed? It is getting heat up than normal phone
Mines been fine. The only tome it'll her hot is if I'm playing gta + charging the phone.
Or if I'm talking + charging; and even then its after like 5 minutes of use

They get warm under constant use. Make sure your battery is seated well. If it causes issues with the phone exchange it again, otherwise I think it is normal for these phones.
Any phone will get warm (not hot) with prolonged use. My inebriated girlfriend kept me on the phone for 2.5 hours last night. I wouldn't say it was ever more than "warm." By no means uncomfortable.
Same problem. After 15 mins of talk time i wouldn't be able to hold the phone close to my ears. I don't two devices can be wrong, its probably something wrong with the manufacturing of Skyrocket. I am very disappointed and returning this back unless someone here has a trick to reduce that heating? Thanks
Try charging and running GPS at the same time, and you can cook your hand. I was guiding my wife yesterday trying to find car dealers and with the phone plugged into a car charger + running GPS, I had to set it down because it was getting too hot to hold.
Doesn't seem much different from any other phone I've used GPS extensively on, other than it got to those temps a lot faster than most. I mostly figured that was related to the fact that it's such a thin device.
If I use navigation while I'm driving, it gets more than warm.
If I charge it while navigating, it definitely gets really hot. I believe it may even overheat and the GPS turns itself off temporarily for a minute.
It gets warm during phone conversations.
Other than that, it stays cool doing anything else like playing a video for even hours.

Hmmm...then really whats the point in having this phone when other phones do not have this pbm
have not had any issues with the phone, only been warm when tethering via hotspot
Mine gets pretty toasty when charging and talking and using GPS, but I've got a case on it as well (which probably isn't great for the battery) but I don't notice the heat as much because of the case.
Check your actual battery temperature and see what it is when it is warm and post the results here
Mine gets warm if it's sitting in my pocket in an area w/ spotty connection. Needless to say, my battery also drains very rapidly when this happens, too.
dumb question..how do i check?
Mine gets heated under extensive use...I used wifi and slacker for 3 he's and if was warm.
rocketed to da sky using mah brain and mah thumbs...
I tried the following:
i) rooted the phone
ii) removed all att apps
iii)disabled 4g
Used for 15 mins to make a call, still same issue it gets rediculously hot. I can say for sure it is definitely gets hot than a normal phone.
Wanted to give ONE last try, exchanged the phone at att store and this phone also had same issue. I gave up and returned the phone. I might get a S-2.
I would just wait...at this point there are at least 3-6 new devices coming out and the sr and s2 will be old news

See the problem is, because of the nature of smartphones, and that android is actually a linux os, many problems people face are'nt actually hardware problems. They are problems caused by installed apps and settings the user themself had done. Dumbphones, blackberrys and iPhones lock off this functionality, which is y I don't consider them a computer in ur hand, android is. That being said it is both a blessing and curse, this flexibility we have

Sometimes while the phone is in my pocket my leg starts to sweat due to the phone getting that hot. I just got a case but that only cuts the heat in half(but still hot).

I picked up my Samsung Galaxy S6 and yes, it heats up abnormally..and it does it fairly quickly. I can hardly hold it to my ear while talking because of the heat.
Thought I was the only one with the issue for a bit.. the longer the phone call the hotter it gets.

Ok, I have Sprint...but I doubt the heating issue is carrier specific Just run a simple Speedtest 8-10 times and you will see your phone heating up. If not, I need to go and get a new phone. This may be an isolated issue with a few phones.
My phone is from tmobile so maybe it's not related to specific carrier models
I'm on Sprint and my G6 gets super hot as well....... Why is it anytime I get a new phone, it has issues? Ughh..... And I'm coming from a Nexus 6
Interesting, I do not see any other site reporting this issue yet. Probably they will report it on Friday when more people will get the phone in their hands. And yes, it sucks that much anticipated galaxy 6 heats up so much.

Heating is common, I remember my galaxy s3 heating upto 50 deg in summer while browsing or heavy use. I got a nexus 6 last month and it had an uneven display, so I replaced it and the replacement had the same issue but not that severe. I returned it got back my money. Now I am planning to get the s6 tomorrow. The always flash on is a problem for me. Check out the forums many people are reporting their flash is always dimly lit. Heating isnt an issue, both my n6's would go upto 45 -48 on intensive use.

I believe he was meaning an internet speed test, but it happened to me from just starting my phone. It was so hot that it felt as if I could cook a burger on it, and I wasn't running anything. I will say that it does get warm now, but ever since the update it hasn't gotten that hot. Maybe that was part of the update, a voltage setting or something.

Yes there was an update pushed out for the tmobile version of the phone. I do not know if the other carriers got an update for that aswell.
Just did a non-VoLTE(HD) call test and the phone did not heat up . I cant test the VoLTE right now as I don't have anyone available to call. It could be an issue with Volte and I would have to take it to the store if I can reproduce the issue.
I would like to add that on first setup when I started downloading all my apps (did a NFC user swap), the phone got too hot to hold in my hand.
i am also on sprint i have noticed my device get really hot what should i do
When I was downloading my apps onto it the back got very warm but that's the only instance I've noticed so far.
Just want to report today I was in an HD voice call with the phone in my jeans pocket walking around and the phone overheated and did a self reboot. Might take my phone to T-Mobile to have them look at it.
overheating as well when listening to music... VZW
warning: block of text coming but I would really, really, really appreciate the help
Hello everyone. I got the Samsung Galaxy S6 with a subscription with KPN Provider. This was almost 3 weeks ago. I received my new S6 within days but the phone was getting too hot too quickly for my taste. For simple things such as updating, browsing. Also when I played the game One Piece Treasure Cruise and used Mobizen to capture the screen so I could broadcast my gameplay through Twitch the phone would reboot automatically very quickly. This happened multiple times and I never even got a warning that the phone was getting too hot. I used to do the same thing on my S4 and it worked almost perfect. The phone would get somewhat warmer and it would lag just a little but it never just turned itself off or became hot to the touch
After checking on this forum and other websites I thought my phone was defect so I sent it back and waited for a new one. The phone they sent me after a week was exactly the same one I sent them. It was apparently a "technical mistake" and I had to send it back again so I could get a new one this time. The new phone arrived this last Thursday and immediately it became obvious that this phone suffered from the same "defect". Now though I'm not too sure if it's defect or if every Samsung Galaxy S6 is like this. So I've been keeping track
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I did some tests.
I ran Antatu Benchmark. The phone got up to 84.0 C twice once during the CPU test and once during the game test. So now im just wondering what you guys are getting during this test? Could a couple of other people do it as well and tell me what temperature their phone was? I thought this phone was working correctly.
I watched a youtube video for 23 minutes and the temperature stayed around 39.0 C - 43.0 C.
Browsing/general multitasking. So I tested having 6 apps on and Chrome having 5 tabs on. If I switch really fast between the apps the temperature gets up to 61.0 C but only stays like that for seconds and immediately goes back to 40-45.0 C. That's also the temperature the phone runs when I browse on Chrome, Facebook while having the other apps on as well.
I've been testing some more by playing the game and streaming it and the CPU stays almost exclusively under 70.0 C, around 65.0 C with some spikes to 73.0 C.
I transferred 10 screenshots from one map to another using the native folder app a couple of times. It got up to 67.0 C one time and the rest of the time it got up to 60.0 C.
It spikes to over 71.0 C for a second when it installs a new app. and sometimes when I'm playing the game, streaming and then take a screenshot.
So at first I was planning on bringing it back because I thought like the last phone that it would just reboot itself when it got really hot, over 80.0 C easily but this one is staying pretty normal I think.
I also saw this other post here http://forum.xda-developers.com/galaxy-s6/help/galaxy-s6-86c-normal-t3180483 and so I performed the same test.
I downloaded 3c Toolbox free version for my phone because I wasn't sure the monitor apps I had were showing the correct Temp but Toolbox shows the exact same temperatures as CPU Z.
The battery has been consistent and always around the 32-33 C temp. So I don't have any worries there. I'm still planning on going to the stores tomorrow to test the show phones. I mean if the phones that have been lying there for months and being abused by every customer have normal temps then I'm definitely trading my in. Also going to the samsung repair point to see what they have to say.
I'm using this btw as guideline for the temperature of the CPU. Don't remember where i got it from.
Normal use: 32° C - 45° C (86F – 113F) Play games or graphics applications: 50° C - 75° C (122F – 167F) CPU power is automatically reduced by a temperature over 80° C (176F)
My last phone went way over this limit I set for it with normal use being always above 50 C. This one went it's not being used is already around the 40 C.
-----------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I just played the OPTC Global version for an hour straight. The only background apps were the monitor apps. All 3 of them were active and I was very surprised.
I made sure to have my hands all over the phone so I could always be aware of the heat. It was just warm to the touch. At the end I checked the monitor apps and they CPU Z and Toolbox gave around 57-61 C and Cool Master around 33.5 C.
I don't know why it was normal this time. I will now let it sit there for a half hour and then test it while having mobizen on and streaming to twitch through my laptop.
Btw the reason why I'm so dead set on making sure the phone can handle the game and streaming is because I actually bought the phone with the intention of being able to play this game and then be able to stream it. I managed it on S4 with some lag and I thought the S6 could easily do it as well. I know the Iphone can do it easily without even having to turn SFX off which i have to do to play it without LAG. I think that's because the Samsung Galaxy has too high of a resolution/DPI.
Ok, so I just spent an 1,5 hour playing the game and broadcasting the gameplay. I am again surprised. I mean I'm also happy but it's really strange that suddenly now it's working pretty good.
The phone got warm but I wouldn't say hot or annoying to touch really. The hottest part of the phone was right above the Power button.
The phone stayed around 68.0 C this time with some spikes to 74 but only 3 times. I took a screenshot but I can't post the link.
The game lagged a couple of times but this might have also been because of Wifi and it wasn't really that noticeable.
As soon as I stopped the phone got really cool again within 5 - 10 min.
I'm off to test the japanese version of the game. I'm really happy right now guys!

Hey, thanks for answering.
I'm wondering what temperature your phone runs when it's downloading and installing an app? or some other activity, that way i can compare.
I watched a youtube video for 23 minutes and the temperature stayed around 39.0 C - 43.0 C. I don't know how to test the web browsing or at least what would affect the CPU enough to show me good results.
I've been testing some more by playing the game and streaming it and the CPU stays almost exclusively under 70.0 C, around 65.0 C with some spikes.
It spikes to over 70 for a second when it installs a new app. and sometimes when I'm playing the game, streaming and then take a screenshot.

Would you say that the Honor 7X is "fast" in day-to-day use? A higher rating indicates that you think the Honor 7X exhibits fantastic performance. Like, is it as fast as your tears when you watch The Titanic?
Then, drop a comment if you have anything to add!
No Problem with any performance and flies with the usage
Fantastic. Superb performance in this price range. Sometimes small lags is there but thats only if i applied any heavy modded themes. If we use stock themes no issues for me. Overall very happy with the speed. Never got any delay in any apps. Superb....
Day to day performance is great

Mine does this. Will basically freeze and not let me do anything. Does it often. I guess I will reset and see what happens.
Love the phone but can't handle the lag.
I'm stumped by people that say it's fast with no issues.

Yeah I feel like I'm in the twilight zone when I see people saying the speed is fine with minimal lag. That what leads me to think we may have defective units. With the Honor 6x I've seen people say that a factory reset fixed their issues.
Much better after factory reset. Slows still from time to time but no just stand still freezes. Bearable. I want this phone with these features with flagship internals though still. Thinking the view 10 may fit that when it comes to US.

OK thanks for the update, I will reset mine this weekend and will also be anticipating the View 10, especially if the price is right.

ya i am also facing the same problem when i am using third party application it shows gray button to install and i am not able to instal the app
Better performance.
I've found that disabling many of the Honor and EMUI apps (via Package Disabler or other methods) has made a huge difference in speed as well as battery life personally.
I've also experienced seemingly random slowdowns. Facebook seems to trigger it alot. clearing open apps speeds it back up.
Interestingly, it seems like it could be a ram issue, but i've never seen less than 1gb free ram, usually about 1.4gb free
I'll try disabling the emui/huawei apps to see if that helps.
I can't wait for oreo and project treble, then i can run regular aosp based without the emui bs.

They probably post after only using it a few days. Mine was fine at first. After about a week sometimes it would freeze, especially if I'd recently used facebook and chrome the keyboard would struggle. I'd need to either wait or kill a few apps and it would go back to being okay.
The stock camera software has a lot of features, but it is waaaaaay to slow.
I needed a new phone, but we had a lot of expenses last year and so I bought something cheap. It's not terrible. I'll be happy to get a year out of it.
