Are rooting and TWRP installation possible without a PC? - OnePlus 7 Pro Questions & Answers

Hi everyone,
Is is possible to root OP7Pro via magisk without a PC (or with a PC without admin rights)?
I understand from the guides here that a PC is usuallyneeded to install TWRP, but I'd like to know if there is an alternative way to unlock bootloader, install TWRP and then magisk without admin rights in a PC.
Thank you in advance

You need a PC to do all of that

Not true, you can do it with a Mac!
Sorry, couldn't help it.
Equilizer is right.
I will say though that not much of a PC is needed. I would imagine the old PC's people are throwing away these days would work just fine for what is needed.

Would admin rights be needed? I don't have a personal laptop right now so I'm planning to use a company-issued laptop instead (Windows 10 with Symantec removable media encryption)

As long as you can install ADB and Fastboot on your work computer you should be good to go. If not, just spend a couple hundred bucks on a cheaper laptop. That's what I did when I started rooting Android over 10 years ago

You can't flash the phone under linux..and I don't recommend using a virtual pc app for flashing either as it can hose your phone. I run opensuse on all my machines..I'm actually tethered via usb right now..but I keep a windows laptop around to do all the flashing.

You can flash from the sim card directly.... There is mention of that somewhere.

There's a link for you.
I have flashed my titan many times using windows under virtualbox on pclinuxos. Some distro's have troubles with usb on vmware or virtualbox so you may want to shy away from doing that way. But thats the way I always do it.

You are restoring from a raw image stored on a storage card....that has nothing to do with "flashing under linux".....but I'll agree that it works as I keep an emergency copy of a stable rom on storage card for just that purpose.
I've used XP in virtualbox under Opensuse...I still don't recommend flashing that way but if you are willing to risk it feel free.

Google on "wm5torage"
synce
There is a software called synce. It will require a kernel compile.

The unofficial galaxy s3 linux support thread

I just wanted to start this thread for anyone who needs help with the s3 on linux whether its mounting sd/mtp or help with heimdall. I use Arch linux and let me tell you mtp is a pain in the butt, I ended up having to use a ftp server, and for my sd card I use a root ap called SG USB MASS STORAGE ENABLER by Mohhamad Abu-Garbeyyeh.

I'm using Ubuntu but there's no way I'm playing with my phone on it - I have a Windows partition just for that sort of thing. Maybe if it weren't my daily driver, I'd be willing to give it a shot but, while I use Linux for just about everything, it's just easier to have a Windows partition for some things. This being one of them.
Hats off to you though - takes guts (& knowledge) I don't have!

A couple of things I have found:
1. While MTP did not work with my Mint 15 system and stock android 4.1.2 on my phone, once I rooted, unlocked the bootloader, and installed cyanogenmod, it worked like a charm.
Before, when I plugged in my phone, I would get multiple error windows saying the MTP system wasn't available. I had to use windows (yuck!) and odin to get root and unlock the bootloader (although I did not try the virtualbox windows until after I had done this). I installed the most recent version of cyanogenmod and now the Mint system recognizes the MTP just fine. No error windows or anything.
2. I was able to get a virtualbox windows machine to recognize the phone, although it required different usb filters for download mode and for typical mtp.
This required going into download mode, selecting the appropriate filter in virtualbox, unplugging the phone, booting up the virtual machine and then replugging the phone. After this, odin recognized the phone. I did not attempt to flash anything further, though, since I had already done so from a windows system.
I think Ubuntu ships with mtp and its libraries now
I used to use arch Linux. Such a fun distro. Then work started using a TS gateway and it started become too much a hassle. Installed Windows 8, no longer fighting the system :screwy:

What do you mean you have a windows partition? I have a laptop that's quad booted with Windows 7, Ubuntu, Fedora, and Pear OS 8. I want to take Windows out of the picture but I need it for things like this. Could you give me more details on this like does it act like a windows system? It'd be much appreciated.

[Q] This One Will Stump You

When you get a new Android phone, you are the Windows equivalent of a "Standard user".
When you get SU access, you become "Administrator" (The technical term for linux systems is "root").
So, that being said, is it possible to exploit the Windows desktop operating system and gain Administrator-level permissions as a standard user?
In an oversimplified statement:
Can you "root" Windows?

I don't understand why you would need to have administrator privileges on a standard user account when you are free to switch from standard to admin and even to use the admin account as the default account....
Yes it can be done. As stated above. There are also scripts that will make the current user the owner of all folders and files.

I would want to do it because I am currently using library computers and I need to install drivers for my phone and it won't let me because I'm not an admin. I need the drivers to use ADB (use the links in my signature to look at the stuff I need ADB for). I already tried rebooting in Safe Mode (for XP). I also need it for Windows 7.

You won't find anything to work if their IT was good enough as you would have to download the script to do it.

Oh I see. There are good reasons why public computers doesn't have admin privileges, and you shouldn't try to tamper a computer that you don't own. And like zelendel said above, their IT probably did everything to lock that pc...

using depixel8 on linux laptop?

I haven't been able to find a definitive answer as the official guide that @jcase and @beaups put out references PC but not mac or linux. It appears that depixel8 is a script and not a windows .exe file, so maybe i can use my linux laptop...? Anyone have experience unlocking the VZW Pixel bootloader using depixel8 on a Linux machine?
(I just got the Pixel and dont want to repeat what happened with my VZW S4 bootloader being perma -locked)
I used a PC, but there's no reason you can't use a linux machine, you're just using it to copy a file and run a few commands via adb, dePixel8 runs on the phone. Get adb and fastboot set up and you're good to go.

Thanks, in my haste and uncaffeinated state my original post and/or title was poorly worded. My confusion wasn't about what is or isn't a PC but whether or not I was correct about dePixel8 not being a windows 'exe' file. I was on mobile at the time and couldn't tell exactly what kind of file I'd be dealing with, so was just looking for a bit of reassurance.
I appreciate the work you do for the Android community. A small donation for you and the March of Dimes(?) is forthcoming.

Poco x3 NFC Windows Drivers?

Can somebody please provide a link for the drivers for the Poco x3 ? I am using Windows 7 and I cannot get shot of the yellow exclamation ! in the device manager. If there is an 'exe' version that would be great as I have had numerous attempts at trying to manually installing but to no avail. Thanks !
Have you tried to install Xiaomi PC Suite? It'll install the drivers for you.

I didn't know this, I will give it a try! Thanks
Well I tried the Xiaomi PC suite , the PC suite does not connect. Says to update my device. Still got the yellow exclamation mark in device manager, but at least I can drag and drop to my phone. I think it's odd they don't provide a driver tho?
Have you uninstalled it first? The driver that was installed by the system I mean. If not try and do it in the Device Manager then reboot your PC with the phone connected. If this doesn't work try a different USB port (all the standard stuff, you know). I'd really suggest that you upgrade that windows to win10. MS has dropped the support for 7. So no more security updates. Also you can still upgrade for free.

Excuse the Off Topic but, having both versions running on different computers, I think that's really bad advice.
If it works, don't fix it.
Windows 10 has given me little more than grief, while a 5 year old install of 7 is running as my daily driver without any major issues.
Security is no excuse here, both OS have attack vectors you must be mindful of -- but Ten's larger user base make it a bigger target... Not to mention MS regular updating breakage (just Google it).
Well I managed to get the phone recognised by the PC using Mi PC Suite. I followed the link here:
China Mi PC Suite with English Translation | MIUI Blog
Xiaomi has Mi PC Suite. It is the all-in-one tool to manage your device. It can install apps, update the mobile operating system, organize files, and so on.
miui.blog
Basically putting the Chinese version followed by some translation files. Recognised phone right away! just don't upgrade the app when it's asks.

I don't intend 'upgrading' my laptop to W10, way too much trouble. Every update something else breaks. There are no supported (W10) drivers for WiFi of graphics so it just runs smoother as it is! Thanks!! W7 all the way!

The OP is here because something actually doesn't work. Telling someone to stay on an 11 years old system based on personal preference is a bad advice. My security example is not an "excuse" as you call it but a good reason (one of many in fact) to upgrade. That would solve the problem OP has and help him avoid many others in the future.

I used the Chinese version and put the English translation files into it. The English standalone did not work
