using depixel8 on linux laptop? - Google Pixel Questions & Answers

I haven't been able to find a definitive answer as the official guide that @jcase and @beaups put out references PC but not mac or linux. It appears that depixel8 is a script and not a windows .exe file, so maybe i can use my linux laptop...? Anyone have experience unlocking the VZW Pixel bootloader using depixel8 on a Linux machine?
(I just got the Pixel and dont want to repeat what happened with my VZW S4 bootloader being perma -locked)

I used a PC, but there's no reason you can't use a linux machine, you're just using it to copy a file and run a few commands via adb, dePixel8 runs on the phone. Get adb and fastboot set up and you're good to go.

A Mac and a Linux box are still PCs. PC = Personal Computer

Thanks, in my haste and uncaffeinated state my original post and/or title was poorly worded. My confusion wasn't about what is or isn't a PC but whether or not I was correct about dePixel8 not being a windows 'exe' file. I was on mobile at the time and couldn't tell exactly what kind of file I'd be dealing with, so was just looking for a bit of reassurance.
I appreciate the work you do for the Android community. A small donation for you and the March of Dimes(?) is forthcoming.

Rom flashing on a Mac

Has anyone ever tried to flash a rom or develop a rom that can be flashed by a Mac? I have Missing sync to sync my Tilt and to download .cabs and .exe's.
Works great by the way. I have flashed several roms from Windows XP on the " other side " of my Intel chip, so no problem there. Just wondering can it be done from the Mac side? And has anyone done it?
I have been using Macs and Apples for over 25 years ( started with Apple IIc) and never once had the urge to switch so comments from the "Apple Bashers" will mean nothing to me
Just curious.
no i'm not going bash apple but i haven't come across anything for mac and i believe the kaisercustomruu.exe can only be run only on windows
I have successfully flashed my Tilt using a Parallels install of XP Pro. Of course that requires an Intel Mac to accomplish...

I have flashed several roms using both Parallels and Bootcamp on the other side of my Intel/Mac chip and .exe file will not run on OS X but is it possible to create a rom using say a .dmg package instead of an .exe package?
The problem is far beyond the fact that the package is in exe the tools to actually flash the rom are windows only
I'd just flash from the MicroSD card.

Obviously you can't just re-package under a different file extension. What " tools " are you refering to? Kitchen tools? Again just re-packaging. Leopard can run on an intel chip. Word, Excel, etc, can run natively on a Mac. Can you put together a rom or write one from scratch that can be downloaded natively to a Mac and then flashed to a Kaiser? Even theoretically?
You can use whatever OS you want... Just do what Peterfnet suggested... Use the SD card method... It's safer and easier.
Just follow the link provided by Peterfnet!

It wasn't a "how do I flash a rom question " , I press a button and my screen twirls from OS X Leopard to Windows XP , I flash a new rom, press another button and my screen twirls back to Leopard and all my Mac apps. ( new Intel Chip for Mac)
The question was " what do the knowledgeable people here think? " Are there limitations of computer science that would prevent this or just limitations of available ground work that I could create?
Edit: I re-read this post and it sound kind of terse, I didn't meanit that way.
Thanks for your input Rayan
I see no reason why it would not be possible to flash a ROM natively inside Mac OS. But in order to do so, the flashing application written by HTC would need to be recoded to run on Mac.
If you extract the .exe file that is inside the rar file posted by the chefs here, you will see 5-10 files, one of which is the OS.nbh file. If you can write a program for Mac OS that can communicate with the Kaiser and call that file, then it would be possible. (DISCLAIMER: I am NOT a programmer, so it is a definite possibility that I could be talking out of my ass.)
Since flashing is not yet available to Linux users, then Mac is probably still a bit off.

best option all around
Well, ever since I discovered the SD Card method I don't flash it through the PC anymore... No more fears of freezing up, power failures and such!
In fact, I carry several "test" ROMS in my card just to install them on the go whenever I'm bored! LOL...
Here's an answer from someone who is paid to write software....
You're correct there is no technical reason that you can't flash your phone from a Mac OS.
Basically the whole process is a few commands & responses sent across the USB port and then the nbh image streamed via the port to the waiting device.
Here's the bind: Microsoft is well known for not working well with others. Why would they be motivated to provide non-MS OS the ability to flash "Windows Mobile"? It's kind of like iTunes being able to integrate with non-iPod MP3 players as well as it works with iPods (or so I've heard).
Thanks all , it looks like I have my next project. Thanks for all your input. peterfnet and Rayan thanks when HTC comes out with their new rom update and new driver package at the end of the month I'm going the card method for a change.

Android development in general should (currently) work even better for OSX and Linux than for Windows.
More important than what operating system you're running is the ability to read the stickies and understand what they're saying.

i completely agree... well put jashsu... but mac seems to be most compatible out of the box...lol...
Theoretically Ubuntu 8.04 should be the absolute most compatible for Android development currently, as that is what Google references in the sdk docs. Mac should be very similar, as it's partially built on BSD. Any experience with unix shells would give one a big jumpstart with Android hacking. However a lot of Mac users (Windows users too) have never touched the command line before. Which is a shame...

Help with Ubuntu 12.04

I have a Verizon Galaxy S3 and I am trying to use Adams linux tool to unlock it. I just installed Ubuntu 12.04 on my laptop and got ADB to recognize my phone. I downloaded the tool extracted it, opened it nothing ran so I found the file Root GS3 with DebugFSRoot in Scripts I opened that and then clicked on adb.exe and got this error.
Archive: /home/eric/.cache/.fr-97pmjP/adb.exe
Zip file size: 191488 bytes, number of entries: 33758
[/home/eric/.cache/.fr-97pmjP/adb.exe]:
Zipfile is disk 58485 of a multi-disk archive, and this is not the disk on
which the central zipfile directory begins (disk 30091).
I am completely lost on how to fix it. I am still learning Ubuntu and am familiarizing myself with the system. For some reason when excuting adb commanding I have to put ./ in front of every command or it will not recognize the command. I tried following a guide which would update a source file so I would not need ./ Any help would be greatly appreciated. Thank you.

Just download the app its in the play store it will unlock your boot loader. Its simple! If you are trying to root your phone also the you will have to use Adams tool if you chose. You will also need java JDK 6.XX. If you look in development you will see other ways to root also and a link to the app for boot loader

I used to use Ubuntu a great deal until I needed Word to write my dissertation. I tried to use Adam's tool in Ubuntu as well and eventually gave up and went back to Windows. For some reason, the tool always said I had a good connection to my phone event when I unplugged my phone from the cable. My computer obviously was not recognizing the phone properly. Since I have been back on Windows for a few years, I just decided to follow the idiots guides out there and just get it done.
Here are a few stupid errors I made:
1. I did not have java runtime environment installed. I simply went to the software store that comes with Ubuntu, searched for java, and installed it.
2. I did not make the .jar file executable. I just clicked on the file, went into properties, and chose the make it executable option.
This at least got the program to run rather than exploring the file .jar file for what it included in it.
As I am sure you know, the Ubuntu forums are a wealth of information. I could have searched there for answers, but I decided to take an easier path. Of course, Adam's program didn't work for me under windows either so I just used a different method. Good luck and I hope you get it working for you in Ubuntu.

[Q] Question about Rooting on a Mac

I tried to post this in the "Beginners Guide for Rooting" but I do not have privileges. I am trying to root my new s3 on a mac so I am trying to follow the guidance in section one of the guide. However the links for samsung drivers are in an .exe format and the link to the java jdk files has expired. I downloaded the samsung drivers from the link and opened the (.exe) file and I attempted to install another version of the java jdk. When I connect Adam's casual the app recognizes my phone but I am unable to see it on my Mac through Finder. Am I ready to flash if the casual app can see my phone? Or do I need the osx compatible samsung drivers (not with a .exe filename) and a specific version of java jdk?
Thanks in advanced for any help. I tried to search for the answers but I have been coming up empty. Even though casual see's my phone, I'm still not sure if its ok to start flashing.

Did you download the samsung drivers in the link ( the .exe files) and install them on your mac? Also do you still have a copy of the java jdk files? The link in the "guide " is dead or the files have been moved. Thanks.
Mine did not show up in finder. I did have to download another program to interface with the phone. Just run Casuals and you will be fine.

There is no drivers for mac. The only thing that will show is a sdcard if you have one. You are good to use Casual.

Mine doesn't show the sdcard. I can use ADB but that's the only way I can communicate to my device over USB. I have't tried Casual.
Well I finally got home so I could use my Mac with my phone. Casuals worked great a couple of weeks ago as did adb. Now, I can't get either to work. I read that some are having issues with the usb ports on the newer MacBook Pros. I will do a little know testing and see if I can find a way to make it work post back. I tried rebooting, different cables, etc with no luck. If anyone knows anything, please chime in.

Okay, after a lot of digging, I finally figured out what I did. I take no credit for this, I found it on here in reply to a thread somewhere. I can't remember where as I usually view this site on my cell phone.
sudo kextunload -v /System/Library/Extensions/EasyTetherUSBEthernet.kext
from a terminal. I forget if you have to reboot or not.
This will disable tethering, but you can now see your device via adb.
To renable tethering once you're done debugging, use
sudo kextload -v /System/Library/Extensions/EasyTetherUSBEthernet.kext
This is for EasyTether only, but I am sure that there could be another type of app that would do the same thing? If you could isolate the app, it should be as easy as replacing the EasyTether part of the command and running that. Good luck, I personally know how aggravating that things like this can be.

[Q] This One Will Stump You

When you get a new Android phone, you are the Windows equivalent of a "Standard user".
When you get SU access, you become "Administrator" (The technical term for linux systems is "root").
So, that being said, is it possible to exploit the Windows desktop operating system and gain Administrator-level permissions as a standard user?
In an oversimplified statement:
Can you "root" Windows?

I don't understand why you would need to have administrator privileges on a standard user account when you are free to switch from standard to admin and even to use the admin account as the default account....
Yes it can be done. As stated above. There are also scripts that will make the current user the owner of all folders and files.

I would want to do it because I am currently using library computers and I need to install drivers for my phone and it won't let me because I'm not an admin. I need the drivers to use ADB (use the links in my signature to look at the stuff I need ADB for). I already tried rebooting in Safe Mode (for XP). I also need it for Windows 7.
