Question about Ram - OnePlus 7 Pro Questions & Answers

Hello,
I'm about to buy it. Do you recommend 6, 8 or 12 RAM?
I don't play games.
I need it for streaming, facebook, file video, whatsapp, instagram, email.

How much storage space have you used on your previous phone? The storage space also differs depending on the ram model. For your use since you don't seem like a heavy user, ram may not be very important since 6gb is quite a bit.
If you barely use any storage as well, then the 6gb ram version would be sufficient.
I personally went with the 8gb ram model with 256gb storage.

Also went with 8/256 for my price point, usage, resale, etc.

Don't get 12G of ram unless you have a very specific reason for needing it. I myself went for 8/256 for the storage space, but I would be just as happy with the 6/128

You can't go wrong with more RAM.
I have the 12GB version.
If cost is an issue get the 8GB/256GB version.
I would not buy the 6GB version.

Get 8. I got 12 and I regret it. It's too much. The phone uses MAX 6/6.5 gb. 8 is enough

6gb is more than enough. My note 9 can keep 21 apps/game in the background before start closing them. 8gb if u need 256gb. 12gb ram is just for show. The only device i think it need that much ram is galaxy and note 10 since it has dex and probably dex uses more ram in desktop mode

12GB isn't just for show, it is excess for most people but certainly not a minute amount amount of people and by the time you will be looking to sell it 12-24 months from now, 12gb will be what others will be looking for. So 12gb will seriously help your resale value and for a mere $50 more, it's a no-brainer.

12gb does not help resale value. This phone in 12 to 24 will probably be $400-300. Doesnt matter what version u have. Now if u try to resale it higher price because u have the 12gb version. People will turn around and buy a cheaper 8gb version. 8gb will still be good for the next 2 to 3 years. 6gb now and day is more than enough. Storage is more important than ram at this point. If u already have 6 or 8gb.

I have 6/128 version, and i"m happy with it.
12GB - is marketing turn, you don't need such a lot of RAM anyway, so look in your needs for storage, if 128GB will be enough, you can buy 6/128.

Are you kidding? I bought my op5 8gb/128gb for $529 new on launch day. Sold it on swappa for $475 after buying the op6 8/128 ($579) just 12 months later. Then bought the 7pro on launch day and 4 days after that sold the op6 on swappa for $490. OP phones have very good resale value after 12 months.
8gb for the next 2-3 years? They said 6gb would be good for 3 or 4 years Anna 4gb is all that's needed. A year later you can already fill 6.5-7gb of ram. The point is if there are phones out there with 12gb apps will be written to start to utilize it.
Gonna have to agree to disagree on this one. Ram utilization is stupid easy to be written into apps.

I've got the 6gb i thought of myself as a heavy user but it seems that I'm not. 6 is more than enough for me.
I'm coming from 4gb on the s8 and i can't feel the difference.

Loll. Keep believing u need 12gb of ram. Only because oneplus has the option of ram boost enable?... Well let see. My phone right now had 49 apps apps in memory and 5gb use out of 8gb..... 6g and 8gb oneplus will perform exactly the same... U will have to open 25 to 30 apps to see the 8gb take avantage. Noone do that in real world usage.
4gb ram:for average users
6gb ram:for heavy users
8gb ram: if u need 256gb only option
12gb ram: to tell their friend that the phone has 12gb ram.
Dont believe ur swappa story seeing that a 6t is already at $335 (8gb version) 8 month. And oneplus 7 pro is already at $570 (8gb, 256gb) in just 3 months. Down from $700. Plus fee and paypal fee to selll a device on swappa.
And lets not go into free market like facebook and offerup which u can find it for much cheaper.

You don't have to believe me you can go back and look at the history of the sales. It's there. Believe what you will, I'm not trying to convince you of anything just tell you what I got for mine and what they were going for. Man, there is always someone that just don't believe something and makes a mountain out of a mole hill. just combats what anyone says. If you cant afford the $50 to buy the 12gb over the 8gb then don't but your argument was the same thing people made about 8gb 18 months ago with the OP5 8gb. Now most flagships have 8gb. ROFL and never said anyone NEEDED 12gb. Learn to read instead of interjecting.
Also, you can always find phones cheaper then swappa but there is a reason you buy on swappa, low risk of getting a phone that is locked down from people owing money on them that you would have pay before you can use. Oh and the fees for selling my phones usually run about $25 or less.
Edit... I just took a peek and a mint 8gb OP6 on Swappa are still going for $400 and that's only the 128gb one, not the 256gb one which had been selling on average for about $50 more then the 128gb model, 3 Months after the 7 pro launched. After the first month a new phone is out it usually reduces a bit. The AVERAGE sold price of the OP6 256gb was $450ish a month before the OP 7 Pro launched

Keep dreaming lol on ur 8gb is need it. 8gb is not needed and nope. Most flagship in the USA dont have 8gb. Pixel 3 has 4gb. Pixel 4 will have 6gb. Lg phones has 8gb, iphones 4gb. Only samsung is pushing their 8gb and 12gb mostly because of their ui and DEX CAPABILITY. Oneplus is an oversee comoany working to get the market to US and only exclusive to tmobile.
Chinese market buy base in spec reason why samsung has been releasing phone with higher ram capability exclusive to chinese market in the past and why all those over see brand care about spec and full screen display so much...thats what sells.
I have a pixel 2xl 4gb and can still have open 12apps in the background what more u need.
If it make u happy 8gb ram. Having 5 different game in the background which u NEED to play at the same time. Plus 15 apps in the background to proof 8gb is needed go ahead. Lmao
The point is if someone has a 8gb or 6gb version of 7 pro they will not notice a different in multitasking . If it is a person like u trying to proof someone u do of course will max out the ram running 5 games and 15 apps then tell everyone "see. 8gb is needed".
Stop ur bs 6gb will be good for all 2019 2020. 8gb is just a bonus. 12gb even for $50 is just for show.

[Q] Is there really a 16GB M8?

The phone information says the M8 comes in 16 and 32GB, but I've never heard about a 16GB variant. Does it exist?
I don't recall what I saw the storage was on Verizon's site. I was still with US Cellular then, and I was seriously considering switching in May on vacation — I was gonna get the LG G2. Best Buy had it for $0.01 with a 2-year contract. Checked out the phone, wasn't feeling it, so I backed down. But I kept looking online after I got back, and the M8 won me over. (My first HTC, too.) All the specs checked out, and I would swear up and down they didn't say what the internal storage was. I assumed 16GB.
So when I go to actually switch, they don't have any One M8's, or any HTC for that matter, out. I told the guy, I'm with US Cellular and I want to switch, I want an HTC One M8. So he goes in the back, and comes out with my new phone. I saw the "32GB" right away but didn't ask. Sure enough, it was the advertised $199.99 with contract. This was in June. The phone wasn't on sale per se, but it had the $100 mail-in rebate.
So I come up here to learn how to root it, and I see it's listed as a 16GB phone with a 32GB option. That's always bugged me, but I never thought to ask until now. So... is XDA wrong, or is there in fact a 16GB model you can get?

Most models are 16 gig. Some carriers like Verizon only sell the 32 gig variant though.
Okay. So XDA is incorrect, since this is the Verizon area, to declare the phone as 16GB (quick facts) and mention the 32GB variant, but the 16GB option exists outside of Verizon.
Personally I think no phone should be sold with less than 32GB at this point. It might cost them a buck or two more but it makes a huge difference.
I just noticed also that the description indicates it's got a 2.5 GHz processor. It doesn't. The Verizon variant is clocked at 2.3GHz. As for memory, I don't know how people scrape by with only 16 gig. I'm not sure how people get by with 32 gig, honestly. I've got 96 gig installed in mine and it's over half full.

What size Galaxy s6 did you get(32gb, 64gb or 128gb) and why

Hello all,
I should be getting my 64GB Galaxy s6 tomorrow(so pumped up...new toy) but i am hoping that with all the stuff i have on my phone now that 64GB will be enough.
Am i the only one that is thinking this?
Most likely i will play with it over the weekend and see what to do then. but i think i should have gone bigger..
Thanks
I got the 64GB to replace my S4 16GB+32GB mSD which I never filled. The price to upgrade to 64GB on Edge wasn't bad, and even though I never filled it before, 32GB felt "limiting"
164GB just sounded silly for my needs. But, if I traveled more I'd want the music and movie storage

Also got the 64gb.
Had to stop myself from buying the 64gb edge.. Was a lot easier when the guy offered a wireless charger, meant less money to spend.
64gb because 128 is far too much and 32gb is far too little.
If I wanted more than 64gb I'd simply OTG it up!
i bought the Edge 64GB because they didnt have the 128GB available and will learn to live with less space.
bigger is always better
you should have gone for the 128gig one, especially when u start talking about movies and series they will gobble up your space in no time.
128 GB because...
- It's only $100 more than the 64 GB.
- Even with cloud storage and services, I like to download torrents directly to my phone to watch later.
- If I want higher quality music, I'll download FLAC files and those take up a lot of space.
- I know I'll regret getting anything less than the max space they offer.
- I can't add space at a later date.
- The phone will definitely have a high resale value as this is most-likely the rarest S6.
- It's only $100 more than the 64 GB.

Which is only $100 more than the 32GB. But in the end you are talking about $599 vs $799 which is a huge difference.

It would be higher than the 32GB, but you aren't going to come close to recouping the $200 premium.

But still more than if I were to sell a 32 GB or 64 GB a year from now.
I am getting the 128gb just planning ahead. Who knows what is in store for us in the future, and I just wanted to make sure that I had enough.
I too am coming from an S4 with 16gb +32gb SD (since the S5 wasn't a large enough leap to make the change), as I am sure many feel the same way.
I ordered the 128gb because there isn't a micro SD slot anymore, and I don't want to have to worry about memory. Just peace of mind really.
I picked up the 64gb version. Although the 128 was only another $100, I didn't need that much space.
I too got the 64gb. You have 50gb free on a new device. For me that's plenty and if I fill it up with pics I can just dump them on my computer. I also have a tablet with an SD card I can store stuff on. If I only had a phone though I might opt for more.
I got the 64 because I had an s5 worth a 16 gig sd card and both were pretty full. Also like stated before, who knows what's in store for us in the future. Also, apps seem to be getting bigger and bigger.
So the system files take up 14 GB?

System is a little over ten and then apps take up some more. It's between 12 and 14. Don't remember exact number.
I got the regular Galaxy S6 64GB in black sapphire on Verizon. I used about 20-25GB on average when I was using my Galaxy S4. So 64GB seems to be more appropriate for me. 128GB would have been nice but for the price point, I don't need it that much.

i purchased a 128gb white S6. I'm coming from a 32GB + 64GB SD Card S5. I like to download my spotify playlist to the phone, i also listen to tons of podcasts, plus I sync my school files/work files to the phone through Dropbox/Dropsync. I don't want to worry about running out of space.
Well i decided to trading up to a 128gb from 64gb. I talked to Verizon and made the trade.
I should be getting the 128gb on the 24th, so until then i will be using the 64gb:good:

For me,the 8 Gig/256 Gig is the perfect combination!
I dont see any sense. High End smartphones today should have 6 GB and you will be fine for a long time. With 8 GB you should be fine even longer. 12 GB is a gimmick. If in 3-5 years comes the moment that 8 GB is not enough anymore (which I even doubt since even my laptop with 4 GB can handle all I need) I will buy a new phone anyways because its getting old.
I don't see much sense... Maybe for future.
My device is using approximately ~5gb of ram in last 24h

I was really torn on this too. I ordered 12/256 on backorder but got impatient in the meantime and also ordered an 8/256 that shipped right away. After playing with the 8gb version for a few days decided there is absolutely no reason to pay for 12gb. So I went ahead and canceled my 12/256 order last night. :good:
8gb is fine.

Maybe leave some ideas on how you will use your phone? Like app usage and games, I'm sure someone will have similar usage and can post their experience. Personally, I love being able to put at least 2 games and apps in be background and not launch everytime I swap. So far the 8gb variant has been very good at this.
Thanks
For only 50.00 more for me it was worth it
I was going to order the Warp car charger but once I saw it was$50 bucks, I decided to just keep my dash car charger I had and put the $50 towards the 12gb model. It's help with resale value. I also remember the OnePlus 5 and 6 the 8gb was smoother then the 6gb models from people mentioning their experiences. The reviewers all had the 12gb model so remembering that I didn't was to chance that happening with the 7pro.
I do not think I read anywhere 12 Gig has any improvement
One thing about 12gb will be better resale value down the road...
Good point on the resale value aspect. To me though I just wanted as much as I could get and afford. I got the 12gb. Why? Because I can. Save $50? Sure. I didn't care to save $50 and not get the current top of the line offering.
I turned off ZRAM and swap.
My phone is consistently using almost 8GB of RAM.
I have the 12GB version. So if you turn off ZRAM and swap, you need the extra because it's not using a compressed area in memory for swap.
I have no doubt that I will ever use more than 8GB unless I turn off ZRAM and swap, but I ordered the 12GB version because $50 for 4GB of RAM is completely reasonable and may help the resale value down the road. Also, I think it would bug me if I knew there was a better version available. Paying $50 to not second guess myself for the next year is worth every penny.

Sure, the law of diminishing returns comes into play at this point, but to not spend the extra on 4gb ram is a move I don't want to take. Just like my gaming pc, I didn't need a butt ton of ram in it either, but if the ram was a good price, I'll always opt for more. If it was cost-prohibitive then that'd be a different story. No, probably won't need 12gb or even be able to utilize it anytime soon, but I'd enjoy having it for the current price.
ETA: I hope my ****t ships today. C'mon already!
12GB ram at least ensures you can have tweaks to disable ZRAM and never worry about ram again. Although, if not for resale value, you should probably wait out a oneplus 8 or above when LPDDR5 is launched; which should be the consistent "doubled performance" of previous generations.

The only useful thing I can think of is the Ramboost feature. Where the phone loads stuff into memory that you use frequently. So there is less chance that that particular app will be closed after using other programs. Whether you used it recently or not. It'll load into memory and launch faster than if it has to be opened from the phone storage (which is fast with the newest 3.0 whatever it is called).
That being said, $50 is worth it for potential boost in performance at times and resell value down the road.

Any advantage on getting the 12 GB version over the 8GB ??

Tbh just get the 8GB Version. You don't need 12GB and won't need it in the next few years. Just think of it, most phones don't even have 8GB.
It's more or less a "gimmick".
Phone is not faster and even with 8GB all apps stay in RAM without the need to reload them. So no, there's no advantage, you just pay more money.
I got the 12gb for just 50.00 more but I only average 4.9gb anyway so I think 8gb would be fine, but memory is managed, just like if u have a 4gb pc compared to an 8gb pc u will tell a difference. The more ram the more stuff is kept in memory.
6 gb phones were released at a time where 4gb was the norm and people thought it was too much now it's barely enough. For $50 more it's a no brainier go for 12gb. Apps and features will use much more ram in the coming years.
8 is plenty, but if you have an extra $50 then go for it...

Yes, but who keeps their phone for "years"?
The only advantage "may" possibly be the resale value will be a little higher.
This is 1+ we're talking about here and they are well known for being aggressive at arbitrarily killing apps in the background.... so no matter how much RAM you have installed the OS is still going to make sure most of it is left open and unused! Now they say they're working on a "fix" of sorts that will eliminate this behaviour so we will have to wait and see!

Most everyone who's not a member of these forums....we are a small fraction of all smartphone users. There are many pixel OnePlus 3 s6 s7 and iPhone see users out there.
Also ram management issue is resolved in 10
I purchased and used both the 8gig and 12gig versions. You will not tell the difference, and by the time it matters you will most likely have a newer phone anyway.

Statistically no, most do not change phones like clothes.
Future proofing.

Samsung trained to fool...

Went to the stores to finalize my pre order and apart from them trying to up sell, I just noticed that they'er selling, for 1250 dollars, 256gb variant with only 8GB RAM. This is very very strange. My note 10 plus came in a lot less at more RAM, If getting stuck with Exynos wasn't bad enough, they go ahead and pull off this stunt.
And before anyone says 8GB is plenty, my Note 10plus is always using 8.5gb and providing flawless multi tasking regardless of being Exynos....so if I'm paying 1250, I want more. This is BS. Not to mention they sneakingly don't mention any of this on their website at Samsung even when you're at the checkout page.
Only the 1350 bucks shows 12GB RAM.....insane they stoop to this level charging a premium.
reviews and even samsung have stated the cpu and such operate more efficiently so will use less ram.
you don't have to buy the device, no need to bash or complain about the cost. it will matter not. im walking away with the 512 unlocked version, with buds and watch 3 for 1200 dollars
