What should I do? Need quick advice - Google Pixel Questions & Answers

I went through 2 pixel OG with failing hardware. The first one had failing mic and audio issue so I exchanged it with another refurbished pixel. The last one just boot looped suddenly 4 days ago. I've had it for 6 months and it were fine untill few weeks ago it turned off randomly at 30% battery. 4 days ago, the phone bootloop and recovery mode would not work. I brought it to repair service, they replaced IC power and battery but it still failing. After many debugging, it was found that the issue was the EMMC (or the motherboard?). The point is, most likely, I'll have to change the parts that will cost almost another pixel and still not guaranteed to fix the problem. Right now, it can enter the recovery mode but only shows [no command]. My country has no ubreakifix and pixel user are very scarce, finding hardware is very difficult.
Now, what should I do?
1. Find another broken pixel and use it to replace my faulty pixel sparepart?
2. Gamble my luck and try another refurbished pixel OG?
3. Buy refurbished pixel 2 (does pixel 2 has faulty hardwares and softwares too?)
I really really like pixel, but is it worth all these hassle? Should I just move on to another brand? If any of you has same experience, please share it here )
PLEAS ADVISE ME. MUCH THANKS!

[Q] Motherboard swap

Hi
Last week I had the problem with my Nexus 5 constantly rebooting on the "Google" logo.
I tried to find a way repairing the phone as I need the data I have on it. But I bought the phone on the Play Store and the LG warranty has ended because I had this phone since it came out.
So, I called Google and now a refurbished Nexus 5 is on it's way, and I have to send them back my phone that doesn't works. Now I need your help please, I want to know how can I recover the data on my older phone (I need to perform a nandroid, but the phone would last only 1 second inside the bootloader).
I thought swapping motherboards could work, but there's many things:
1- Am I going to have any problems with the IMEI ?
2- Does a Nexus 5 without it's adhesive in the inside at the bottom means "warranty void" to them ?
3- It is better to swap motherboards and make a nandroid then putting back my motherboard on the broken phone or just swapping motherboards and keeping my motherboard in the new phone ?
Thank you for helping me. Don't hesitate to answer me more information if you need or if my english is too bad.
As soon as you open the phone warranty is void. You most likely have a stuck power button on the problem phone. Try mashing the crap out of it for a minute or two. If you can get it unstuck your problem is solved.
Thanks for answering
I already tried to hit the power button for a long time, then hard enough to try unstucking it. I even broke the thin piece of plastic below the sim tray. But I did this before I realized the phone wouldn't try to start at all if it wasn't connected to the AC adapter. Then I saw a post from someone on reddit having the exact same issue, who replaced a defective part (he called this an integrated circuit) and has his phone working now.

I know this thread is a little aged, however I am starting to have similar issues and I also had the Nexus 5 since launch. How did you get a replacement out of warranty?

What if Samsung charges me for repairing? Is it time to buy another device?

Hello, few months ago, Samsung replaced the entire screen for me free of charge because they thought that the lack of responsiveness and random garbage (barcode like images) on screen were caused by a faulty screen. Few days after I took it back, I had the same problem. I reported to them but as I was in another country, I could not get it repaired. Then, I got other issues such as device rebooting by itself when I pressed the camera app, rebooting continuously like crazy whenever the device is running out of power, etc. I dropped the device (screen facing down) once recently. There was a dent at the corner but the screen remained intact. I don't know if Samsung would say that all the problems are caused by the dropping. I have bought the device over a year ago. What if they charge me? Is it worth to pay to have it repaired? It has happened many times that when I needed to take photos, the device failed by rebooting itself. It also happened once that after a full recharge, the battery went out of power in the middle of the day even I did not use the device much. I don't know if these problems will happen again after repairing.
I need a device that has: large screen, stylus writing, cellular phone function. The iPad PRO has no cellular function and Samsung does not make a new version of Note PRO 12.2. What suggestion do you have?
Did you rule out the battery connection (http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3142081) by having it resoldered?
If the device is already out of warranty and you're sitting there contemplating value of repair by Samsung you may as well consider having a reputable repair shop resolder the connection.
Besides, isn't it a bit premature to assess value of repair without costs being known?

I was too afraid to have it opened. Anyway, Samsung said that they need to replace several components (including something called ipu?) and it would cost about US$450. Perhaps just get it back, resolider it by myself and root the device. Then, use it at home while getting another device as my main tablet/phone.

Hard-Bricked Hammerheads thread

My Nexus 5 died on me.
A few days ago, I woke up and connected my phone to the charger and went on with my daily routines. And when I checked the phone after half an hour, the phone was completely off. I tried to turn it on and tried all the key combinations, the phone showed no response at all; no Google logo, no bootloader, no TWRP, the screen was just completely off. I thought that it was the battery's fault as the phone was almost 2 years old and had been showing signs of depreciation. It doesn't even show anything even when I connect it to the charger, instead it heats up a lot during charging. So I took it to the service centre and the guys at the service centre told me that the motherboard had got fried and the only solution is to get a new mobo which costs 13,500 INR (200$). But, I don't want to spend that much fixing this device, I think its better to buy a new phone. I am planning to get something cheaper than the Nexus 5 with a not bad specification and good dev support (thinking about Moto G 3 and OPX).
Three of my friends also had bad experience with the Nexus 5.
One friend had the same issue, the phone died one day without any apparent reason. He is now using a YU Yuphoria.
The other two friends' phones just started bootlooping one day. Both those phones were not even rooted ( not the power button issue, they also had to replace the motherboards, but luckily their devices were under warranty back then, so they got it replaced for free). I think LG used cheap low quality components to make the Nexus 5.
What do you guys think could have caused this problem?
I had the same issue. I received a Nexus Device from a friend with a faulty wireless card. I know it was faulty because when I could get it turned on, it would never turn the WiFi adapter on.
What I did to fix it was, I ordered a broken Nexus off ebay. The screen was cracked and the guy tried replacing it but he f'd up the internals somehow. I swapped out the mother board which was easy and flashes stock Marshmallow and haven't had any problems since.

But that's just a small issue compared to mine :/.
Still a sign of cheap components.

Same thing would fix yours. If you buy one with a broken screen then just swap motherboard it would be cheaper than buying a mb replacement. I have the opposite issue with my wife's G2, motherboard is ok, but everything else, screen, battery, toast.

Pixel died this morning, no apparent reason

I'm just posting this as an fyi, I hope that fits the spirit of this forum. I have a Pixel 128GB that's completely stock, and it just died this morning, no warning, no apparent reason. It's in perfect condition, never dropped or damaged. It was full charged this morning, worked fine for a couple of hours, and then the next time I tried to use it, it was completely unresponsive. Doesn't react when the charger is connected, just dead.
It's covered under the Google warranty, but it's going to be painful waiting for the replacement. I know it's been mentioned in previous threads, but they make you pay for a replacement phone (as a credit card hold) in order to ship you a new phone. Then they release the hold once they receive the old phone. They told me I'll receive a brand new phone, not a refurbished one. Also, if this ever happens to you, just know that you can select expedited shipping when you place the order for the replacement; they didn't tell me this (I was on the phone w/ google support) and so I missed that opportunity. And there's apparently no way to revise the order to apply expedited shipping, even while the order is still in 'Processing.'
Same phone here. I thought mine was dead too. Phone just instantly shuts off. Need to long hold power button restart. Happened to me numerous times in the past 12 hours. I am unlocked and rooted. I wonder what's going on.

Same thing happened to my pixel today. Was listening to a podcast when it just turned off and won't turn back on, even while on the charger. Not happy! It's only 3 months old, this shouldn't be happening to thee devices. I bought from a retailer, hopefully Google support helps...
Are you using newest february security patch?
Maybe unrelated but I just had similar problem on my old Moto X '14. I'm using it as a backup device on Fi and I accidentally let it run out of power (no idea how much battery was left when it shut down). The phone is running a Nougat rom and it appeared completely dead until a found the suggestion to plug it into "the strongest charger I owned". Did this and let it sit for a while and it came back to life and charged normally. Just thought I'd mention this as it seems to be a problem with Nougat itself (had the same thing happen to my tablet also running Nougat). I'm now scared to let my Pixel run out of juice.

3 devices is nothing. If they sold 3 million Pixels, that means that 99.999999% are okay so far. That's a good amount. ?
Edit: Double post - please disregard.

Same here, I bought from a retailer. My headphone jack was making some serious noise when plugging in the headphones, I called up Google and they sent me an RMA. Three days later they had my phone and shipped the new (not refurbished) phone to me. Got it three business days later. So yes, in short they will support warranty on pixels not purchased thru Google play.
I just finished a long useless chat with Google support. I have to go to the retailer for warranty support. If they won't help then I can go back to google. I'm in Australia if that makes any difference

This was my experience too (including the same hardware problem!).
Similar thing happened to me. The phone started rebooting about once a day over the last week. I woke up and it was stuck on the bootloader. It wouldn't load the OS or the recovery.
Bought mine through project Fi but unfortunately its already almost 3 months old and they would only send me a refurbished device.

I felt like I could have written that exact post. Had phone for less than a year, phone also died for no apparent reason. Google support was useless. Had to pay for a refurbished pixel (which costs more than buying new Pixel $800 refurbished, $500 new?)...and now am on a week long waiting game for the replacement. I'm not sure why Google doesn't replace with a new phone vs a refurbished phone. Also disappointed that it takes almost a full week to get replacement. I asked about expedited shipping, they told me it was not an option. Overall disappointed. I may sell my new refurbished phone and buy something more reliable.

I had the same thing happen. I RMA'd the first one and received a brand new one as a replacement. After about three months, the new one died the same exact way. I RMA'd that one and received a refurbished one. So far, it's been fine... but I don't trust it.
Same here

It's a minor hw/sw defect in a very extremely small portion of the phones and isn't permanent and they painlessly replace the phones with brand new ones in a few short days after the request is processed. Good luck filing and winning a class action suit against Google over this.
You guys are lucky. This happened to me, but my warranty expired by three weeks. Google refuses to help me. I took it to their authorized repair and they cannot do anything to get it working.

"update" i called google several times and they finally agreed to replace my phone, for free!. I told them that there were a lot of pixel phones suffering the same issues. I even offered to pay to have it repaired/replaced, and i was 5 weeks out of warranty
Same thing happened to me. Was out of the 1 year warranty and the google extended warranty i had to pay $90. This was the third phone it happened to also.

Just happened to me too! Pixel XL died over night, went through google hardware chat support on my pc... to find my phone was out of warranty by 1 day. Looks like they are processing an exception though for me and replacing it (kind of vague though about what they are going to do on their end, so not actually sure what they implied). I also took it to their authorized repair store ubreakifix as well. The technician put in a new battery, screen and charge port with no luck, phone came back as not repairable. Said there was a tiny amount of water damage but nothing was fried so he ruled that out (my phone got a tiny amount of rain on it about 3 weeks ago is only thing I can recall). He believed there is a larger problem with the power mgmt system, another person behind me in line had the same exact issue and outcome.
My phone is also basically dead microphone won't work headphone jack won't work can't record at times have to restart the phone multiple times to get it to work again then craps out again when headphones plugged in straight static then other times you plug it an there's no sound at all also getting restarts

Is there anywhere I can trade in my phone get money gonna buy a OnePlus 5T

My Pixel Suddenly entered a bootloop, and it can't access Recovery. Am I screwed?

I've been using my Pixel like a normal person for a couple months now, but it suddenly froze and entered a bootloop this morning. I tried booting into TWRP, but it just gives up and reboots itself. I tried booting into TWRP with the fastboot boot command, which also did not work.
This is an original Pixel that is running Android 8.1.0 (April 2018 security patch).
Could this be a motherboard failure? I want to know what others think. Thanks in advance.

Yeah that seems like my only option right now, but I have very low hopes for that to work. I didn't want to delete my data on the phone just in case some third party repair shop fixes it, but I'll still try reflashing the rom later today.
Update: reflashed the rom and wiped all data. Still stuck in a bootloop.

Interesting... I might try replacing the battery but honestly I don't know if I will soon. I might just end up paying some cell phone repair store to do it for me. But if that doesn't work, I will have spent anywhere from $50 to $100 for nothing.

I know, that is the problem. I did mine myself but screwed the screen which is pretty expensive.
Why replace the battery?

I had a used Pixel I bought off eBay to replace my HTC M9, got it cheap to test rooting/roms etc. Used it a couple months and liked it but the screen was scratched, and battery shot, AccuBattery showed it had 39% life left. I looked at replacing the battery but local shops didn't deal with Pixels, too hard I guess. I then figured I'd buy a "New" one off eBay, I got it for about $150 and AccuBattery shows ~95% life. I unlocked and rooted it right out of the box no issue. I have heard some stories about refurb phone being sold as new, but as long as they have a return policy I think it's worth a shot. Very happy with my new phone, now if I could just find ROM that was rock solid, but that's a different thread.

I've never heard of AccuBattery before actually, but I'm definitely gonna try it out on some of my old phones just to see how much life their batteries have. I think I will eventually try replacing the battery, but only if I have some money to burn.
Edit: I have a Pixel 3a XL now, so there's no reason for me to go back to a Pixel anymore lol. However, I would love to bring my old Pixel back to life instead of buying another one off eBay.
