9.1.0.252 (C432E7R1P8) root does not work - Huawei Mate 9 Questions & Answers

Hello,
I was using Magisk wihtout any issue until last update of my Mate 9. Now software version is 9.1.0.252 (C432E7R1P8) and as after every upgrade I re-patch my recovery_ramdis.img and patch from fastboot. In order to boot with root, I used recovery mode and it entered in system with root privileges. After the last update I did the same but recovery mode enters in recovery mode and system shows as non-rooted.
Please help, how to root my Mate 9?

hi, you must install busybox from magisk modules. But huawei changed file system to erofs. Because of some folders only read. We cant delete and change anything from system anymore.
And adaway is not working.
i downgraded to b191.

Magisk does not change anything in system folder. Magisk is not enabled therefore I cannot install busybox. In Emui9 there was a workaround but seems it doesn't work anymore.

You must press to volume up and power buttons when opening for magisk enabling.

Huawei disabled booting to Recovery directly using Vol up and power, you end up in eRecovery instead. Easiest way is to flash magisk patched from fastboot, boot phone, enable USB Debugging in dev options (if you haven't already), and use adb to reboot. Command is:
adb reboot recovery
You can also flash patched image, boot to eRecovery and select the Wipe/Factory reset option, this will boot to recovery which is now Magisk so it'll boot to system with magisk. (Be careful though as the wipe command will still be there, so if you flash back recovery and boot to it your phone will automatically wipe. You can remove the file /cache/recovery/command to prevent this)

Thank you for information. So we returned back to "tethered jailbreak" times with Apple Is there any workaround for this or so far the only solution? Wipe data option is quite unsafe for me, easy to forget and after firmware update to have a wiped device.

It will loop to recovery after you boot to magisk the first time, so each normal reboot will lead to Magisk. You can force eRecovery/normal boot if you plug in USB and boot holding vol up.

this file is for root?

Hi guys, so i have an untouched p10 on the version above, to install magisk is it as easy as asking one of you for the RECOVERY_RAMDIS.img (not yet in the firmware database) and patch it if it hasnt using pc then also on the pc rebooting to recovery and done? Also has restart and flat battery been tested? I read above that you must use shutdown
Its a vtr-l29 if it makes a difference

And I have no idea why. Before I downloaded the newest update I upgraded my TWRP to the latest version. After the update I tried first to install SuperSU via google store but didnt work so i downloaded the installable zip and tried through TWRP. All I get is : E: failed to verify whole-file signature; E: signature verification failed.
Tried the old SuperSu that always worked (2.02) but I get the same bug.
I think the problem is that instead of TWRP when i start my phone with start button + vol down it gets into CYANOGEN recovery. I just installed TWRP ver 2.8.5.1 but its not working =/ dont know what to do, help please

You need to resinstall TWRP, just after you have done so, reboot back to TWRP instead of rebooting the whole system. Once back in TWRP you can flash SuperSU again, then reboot and you should be fine. Also make sure you have the cyanogen recovery option unticked under developer settings.

Once it flashes, are you rebooting back into recovery first (without switching off, fully rebooting, anything else)? You should boot into TWRP and then you can reboot fully, it should be fine. If you just reboot out of TWRP after flashing the it gets overwritten by the stock cyanogen recovery.
After completing the TWRP flash in ABD run the following command.
Code:
adb reboot recovery

Im doing what Im told, so - After the phone has booted back up, turn it off. Now to enter your newly installed custom recovery, hold volume down + power. The phone should boot into recovery mode.
Wish I wasnt so braindead on this field =/ and the cyanogen recovery welcomes me every time
okay so instead of fastboot reboot command i should write the one you gave me? gonna try

yeah, i was doing it wrong but i did it right this time and it is still not working. Have my usb debugging on

Okay. I tried and tried but failed. I have no idea what to do anymore. Downloaded new drivers for pc and new fastboot, tried like 15times to flash twrp on my phone and seemingly it worked but when I rebooted, turned it off and on again with volume - it's always cyanogen recovery there, never twrp. I downloaded twrp manager but it won't work because it requires root and I can't root because manager won't work. Saw on oneplus forum that some people have exact same problem but there S been no solution so far and I have no idea what to do anymore. The only thing I haven't tried yet is to hold start+volume- keys after I flash twrp and reboot the phone using the code, so instead of having to turn it off and on again maybe I ll be able to get into the twrp instantly and it won't get overwritten by cyanogen recovery.

OK so i am experiencing the EXACT same issues. When I go into Fastboot Mode all I get is a small cyanogen head forllowed by the words 'FASTBOOT MODE' I get no menu to navigate or anything. TWRP appears to install but I get Cyanogen recover every time. If I use the toolkit and go to fastboot mode it sees it as an unlocked fastboot device but will not allow me to root the device.

Not able to get into TWRP recovery, stuck on "Your device is booting now..."
Hey everyone,
I just unlocked my bootloader and now want to flash TWRP and SuperSU. My Phone is already Nougat with Emui 5.
The Problem is that I'm just not able to enter the recovery. When pressing volume down + power or trying "adb reboot recovery" in the command line, the phone starts in the "unlocked bootloader warning screen". But not like in the normal warning screen it doesn't give me options but just shows a white line saying "Your device is booting now..." and thats where it gets stuck. Only gets hotter...
The fun thing is I already was in the recovery but wasn't able to flash the SuperSU (r275). Maybe it was not compatible with Nougat. TWRP just couldn't mount various things. After reflashing the recovery below instead of some other version (don't know anymore) I'm not able to enter the recovery again.
Feels like I searched the whole Internet and there is nearly nobody with the problem or a solution. Tried this as well: https://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-8/help/honor-8-boot-to-twrp-recovery-lost-root-t3567462. It seems like nobody who published a Honor 8 + Nougat + TWRP + SuperSU "How To" acutally tried it himself.
I used this TWRP https://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-8/development/twrp-t3566563
Please help me I can't use WhatsApp because I need to restore it with Titanium (Database way doesn't restore all chats... Other problem)
Thanks everybody I just can't stand this anymore
I had this issue after downgrading to EMUI 4.1 and upgrading to 5.0 again via twrp. I flashed some old 3.0.2.0 version from another developer. Booted into that, flashed the update.zip package for emui 5.0 and then i was able to successfully flash and boot into 3.1.1.0

Thank you I got it!
So I got my L09 with Nougat/Emui 5 on it. Then just used TWRP from https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=70228949&postcount=252 (bootable, think ist ist 3.0.2.0) then flashed 3.1.1.0 from https://forum.xda-developers.com/honor-8/development/twrp-t3566563 (bootable) and finally flashed SuperSu from first Link again. Other SuperSU versions (like the phh r275) WERE NOT flashable.
Magisk is the most compatible root solution for the Honor 8 on Nougat. The only thing that doesn't work (seamlessly) is MagiskHide, but the root itself works and flashes fine from TWRP.
I have tried to flash twrp multiple times to no success. I have tried multiple variations of the tool but for some reason when I go try to boot into recovery it takes me to erecovery which fails to do anything.
Are you sure about button combination
If you're trying to boot in to recovery with your phone plugged in to the computer it will także you to erecovery. If only i could find the person who całe up with this stupid idea that caused me hours of struggles, they'd pay for it. also when you use the pwr + vol.down combination let go off the power when you feel the vibration and further hold the vol.down until you see the boot screen appear.

I tried this like 20 times but this time it worked! I know have TWRP working. weird think tho is that no keyboard or default Huawei apps are preinstalled and BT isn't working.
Few problems with Binary SU and BusyBox
My phone seems to be rooted. Titanium Backup works but I have to accept every App instalation manually. With other settings restoring gets stuck. Also SuperSU reminds me every time that my BinarySU needs an actualisation but fails if it tries. And finally BusyBox just isn't able to get itself installed.
I'm thinking about restoring stock firmware, update to Nougat, and flash the two TWRP Versions and SuperSU again but hate to spend ours on my phone. OnePlus One rooting was sooo easy...

There you have the issue. After ota from system you need to get into Magisk app, press install, press install and choose "install to inactive slot" to keep root.
You need to flash magisk from fastboot, or a fast booted twrp to get it working.
You are stuck in bootloop, it won't boot. You can turn the phone off by press and hold power button for 15 seconds.
Also: the update is already done so don't worry about that
And if you did have twrp that is also replaced with the update.

You had it got replaced.
Press power and volume down for 15 seconds then. Should do the trick
After next OTA:
Let it do the update (DO NOT REBOOT!)
start magisk app go to downloads
Search for TWRP A/B
Install that one. (should only be one hit) (DO NOT REBOOT)
Go to main screen of magisk app
Click install, install, install to inactive slot (after ota)
Now reboot and you have twrp and magisk.

How to root OP6 11.1.1.1 ?

I've recently upgraded from 10.3.11 to 11.1.1.1 and so far I've not been able to find a version of TWRP that I can fastboot into that works. All the versions I've tried have just hung on the fastboot title screen and gone no further.
Obviously after booting onto TWRP I'm planning to install magisk v23 before rebooting onto my fully rooted phone, that's my hope anyway.
So could someone please post a solution to the OP6 11.1.1.1 root issue?
Thanks

Rooting with twrp steps:
Note: This is for OOS 11.1.1.1 (running with stock boot image) on OP6 assuming you have already upgraded to this version and now your twrp and root are broken - I can't speak of any oher version or device. This worked for me and may or may not work for you.
Just for reference and steps that I followed so all of this is summarized in a single post (see also: https://forum.xda-developers.com/t/issues-getting-root-back-after-android-11-update-op6.4343729/):
Pre-steps for safety (can be skipped depending upon your comfort level):
1. If you are not on stock boot image then please follow the youtube link in the next step below to revert to stock boot image.
2. Download the stock boot image: see the description of this video (note - do not follow the steps in the video to use the patched boot image as you will lose twrp and installing twrp nebrassy after using the patched boot image does not work as booting into system gets you in to twrp and not normal boot. If you don't care about having twrp then feel free to follow the vide and ignore the rest of this post as that works quite well as well but you will only have stock recovery):
. This allows you to use fastboot to revert to stock boot image in case you get in to a bootloop.
Steps for rooting (this assumes you have at least fastboot and the right drivers installed on you PC/laptop):
1. Download the magisk zip file directly on to the phone - say in the downloads dir. I used the release version v23 which I also used with the oos 10.x version prior to the upgrade
2. Download the TWRP Nebrassy image https://filehorst.de/d/extocxFJ on to your PC/laptop.
3. Get your OP6 in to fastboot mode (power off the phone and then power back on with Vol up and power pressed simultaneously)
4. Boot in to the above recovery image after connecting the phone to laptop using USB: fastboot boot TWRP-3.5.2-enchilada-Nebrassy-2.img
5. Once the phone boots in to the above recovery - from the Advanced menu (scroll down in to this menu) and install "this TWRP image"
6. Reboot the phone in to system - if the phone bootloops then revert the boot image out and do not proceed any further (see the above youtube video link). If all goes well and everything checks out, from the power menu boot in to recovery or power off the phone and then power on while holding the volume down button. This will boot the phone in to twrp again
7. From the twrp install menu, find the Magisk zip file on the phone and install it. Wipe Dalvik and reboot in to system.
8. If all goes well, find the magisk app and verify root and follow the instructions in the above youtube video to enable magisk hide, safety net checks, etc. If your phone is bootlooping, then revert out the boot image (see the video above on how to do so)

When I use the recovery method to get the rooot. magisk hide was not working for some banking apps. but the boot patch method was actually successful in hiding from the bank apps as well.

Is your bootloader locked now? Also you would no longer have twrp as the recovery?

Yes, twrp is removed. Bootloader is unlocked. No problem with that.

Try this:
Enable magisk hide
Hide the banking app (all services) in magisk hide
Install app airfrozen (green icon with snowflake)
Freeze magisk app
Reboot
Try your banking app

Hey! Thanks for the reply. But I'm able to use my banking services with patched boot image for magisk. Any steps I can use to flash twrp again? I've lost twrp when I did flash magisk boot image for my OP6.
I fear I'll get into boot loop maybe. Or something might happen. And after flashing twrp again I can use those steps.

Thanks for this. I had all kinds of problems trying to get root after updating to 11.1.1.1. Even this failed when I tried to install Magisk via the Nebrassy TWRP. That got me a crashdump. So I watched the video. I then flashed the stock boot image. Rebooting was successful. Then, I flashed the patched root boot image. Success, finally. This after various other failures via different methods.
Perhaps had I flashed the Magisk uninstaller, I could have avoided the stock boot > patched boot steps. But it all adds up to kind of the same thing.
Anyway, thanks again. It saved me.

Are you suggesting that ROM/magisk installation interferes with the bootloader? In my opinion, this is impossible. Just press Power for a long time to make sure you've turned off the power, and run the standard bootloader entry procedure.

Its not working .. When I flash this ROM first time everything was working fine I remember I can boot into recovery mode .. This ROM some times crashes and reboots .. It was automatically rebooted into recovery (I saw recovery is not seandroid enforcing in the left top corner of Samsung boot logo) then it reboot back into system without showing up twrp splash screen ..
Is there anything wrong with twrp bcz I flashed latest twrp before flashing the ROM..
I tried several times to boot into download /recovery mode using hardware button but it still reboot back into system

If you can boot the system, then try adb reboot bootloader, and if that doesn't work, then on the system uninstall magisk by restoring the original kernel and then try adb reboot bootloader.
