Strange, maybe clear cache in recovery?
If that doesn't work then dirty flash full stock rom

Are you sure it's freezing? How long are you letting it sit? And what version are you running?

Try reflashing a different recovery through ez recovery. There's a thread maintained in themes and apps, pick whichever you want and try it again. TWRP might work too.

Have you used lucky patcher on Whatsapp? I would wipe Play Store Cache and the dalvik cache. If you've used lucky patcher on whatsapp you should revert any patches you may have applied.

Then don't worry about the lucky patcher thing, are you rooted and do you have a custom recovery?

The other option I would recommend would be to root and flash a custom recovery, then flashing the dalvik cache. If that doesn't work then installing a custom ROM, but before that's an option I want to make sure we've used all other possible ways to fix it.

Thank you but rooting isn't on my plans because that was the reason I got a Nexus 5 vanilla Android. As well as that my bank apps will stop working.
Can't seem to find an explanation for this error.

Nope says app not installed.
Probably a factory reset would be an option???
But it is pain, reinstall and setup all again.

Hm, did you move any files to that nexus from a previous device that had Whatsapp installed? If so(or no, either way doesn't hurt to try), go into your internal storage and look for a folder named Android, then go into the folder Data. Look for the folder named com.whatsapp (or something similar) and delete the entire folder. Then try again.

There is no .WhatsApp folder.
After a Google search I found out that whatsapp does not run with Art but I changed to dalvik a few days ago so it should work.

I aost didn't check the thread because of the title.
If all else fails boot into recovery and reflash whatever ROM you are using without wiping data.
Should keep all your info and reset you to dalvik

Yes to all.
Just fyi after I rebooted twrp I had no touch response. I was happy to learn that flashing custom kernel fixed the touch issue with TWRP

If I downloaded the ota and have full twrp installed, the proper way of installing is to sideload through twrp correct?

Same. TWRP was unresponsive. Booted into TWRP using the boot image and fastboot command. Then flashed custom kernel + Magisk and now all is working as it should.
anyone notice any difference from Nov?
considering doing a full wipe after work, as i dont believe in dirty flashing

Very minor differences.
Free memory is a little greater
Seems smoother
One disappointment is System theme still not working

Depends on so many things.
If you are stock, then you can just flash the OTA
If you have twrp and magisk, then you can fastboot flash
So many possibilities
