HTC Desire 820 randomly stops detecting the SIM card - General Questions and Answers

Hi everyone, my old HTC Desire 820 has a problem. It randomly stops detecting the SIM card from yesterday (I checked another sim cards and another device, it's a smarthphone fault, not a sim card). I looked through various tips in google what could be the reason and how to fix them, but they didn’t help. I will add that sometimes for example for 2-3 minutes everything is okay the sim card works well and a moment later when I start using a smartphone I got info “No sim card, no service”. Any help would be appreciated.

Maybe the SIM tray hardware in the device is failing or maybe you need to reflash the stock firmware for your device. The device is old, it isn't hard to imagine that the hardware or software may have become corrupted.

Hello, I purchased a galaxy tab 7 plus in Hong Kong. All work great until 2 days ago, I inserted another Sim card then it now says no Sim card. I tried with several other Sim cards but no luck, I did a factory reset, flashed with firmware from Sam mobile but still no luck, I don't know what else to do before I send it to Samsung for repair that gonna be expensive, help is greatly wanted, thank you.

Try to insert the sim card with the tablet on. Does it restart? If not are you sure you are inserting it with the correct side?
Hello, thanks for the answer, I tried all that already, anyway the Sim only fit in one position so you cannot take wrong.
The tab restarts when inserting card yes.
I tried also taking the battery out for 10 mins... Clean the head of the Sim compartment but no luck.

Just removed the back by pushing under the sd card slot then inserted a flat tool to unclip the lid, then removed the batery connector.
However i still have the issue, its driving me crazy as it is my working tool...
does the original SIM still work in it?
perhaps try flashing original & latest frimware updates for new/different modem.
I know one chinese version of tab plus has locked bootloaded dud to China's restrictions, I would not be surprised if they have locked down modem as well.
And for the heck of it you could always try Galaxy S Unlock app, to be certain you're unlocked.
Strongly suggest backing up /EFS folder (twice) just in case.
Thanks for the suggestion, I flashed the device twice already but there is only one file. Could you direct me to the files you are referring to please I'll take a look when I'm back home, thanks again.

I would try EVERYTHING else before flashing a new modem. Toggle airplane mode. disable/enable packet data, etc.
First, does the original SIM still work?
If so I would give the Galaxy S Unlock a shot for the heck of it.
These other SIMs have you tried them in other devices to either make sure they work or activate them?
did you purchase device on a SIM contract??
sim issue
The original sim does work, i have put it in other phones and it works fine, i have also tried other sim but still same issue, message still say "please insert sim card"
I have purchased the tab sim free in hk so no, no contract, it did work fine since december until 2 days ago where i input a data only sim card, when i insert sim card it does reboot, meaning it detects the card in the socket but thats it.
Concerning Galaxy S Unlock my tab is not rooted i have used only legit firmware until now so im not sure about that.
PS: looking at my phone servie status it says:
Service State: Out of service
Are you sure you havent been sold a bad or expired sim card?
Id try to give samsung customer support a call at least, they will probably tell you to send it to them anyway.
Can you try exchanging this for another one where you puchased it?
Well, i bought it during my holidays in hk but i live in norway, so... bit difficult to chage it, the sim card works just fine in other devices so it should work in tab.
I tried the galaxy s unlock and during step 1 it says error for efs backup, so either because im not rooted or because my efs is corrupted.
Probably because youre not rooted.
Im wondering if the SIM could be from a small provider which isnt recognized by the device?
It should at least dected then say something like network provider unrecognized, etc.
I really dont what to say.
I would keep trying other sims, try to get a 5$ pre pay from a major carrier like O2, 3, tmobile, etc. not sure what carriers you have over there.
Well i use Telenor which is the biggest and also quite big in europe, i will call customer service tomorrow and hear what they say, but i fear its gonna rip my pockets...

did you push the simcard all the way to the bottom of the slot?
I need a pen to push it....so I wonder if you insert your sim card properly.

yes, since the first time, repair shop said they cannot help since device has been purchased in hong kong...
No solutions until today...
Solved
After dismantling the tab completely (hard work guys...) i confirm that the sim card reader is defect, the cushions that reads the card did not press completely on it so i applied a temporary fix by adding an extra layer to thicken the card so it can press correctly on the cushions. I did try this fix before with the tablet in one piece, however i could not get it to work correctly.
Anyway thanks for your help and i'm happy that i can use it again

[Q] Nexus S does not recognize SIM card

HI
i have recently bought a nexus S online, which i believe to be a recond set.. running on 4.0.4
the problem is when i put in my SIM card and switched the phone on, the phone does not recognize the SIM card at all (there's no problem with the SIM card, was/is working perfectly in another phone)
so i tried flashing different sorts of factory image for nexus S, including the SOJU, SOJUA and the SOJUK.. but with all the images i'm still unable to get the phone to recognize the sim..
is it a problem with wrong firmware/radio version? or is it to do with a faulty SIM board?
also, if it IS due to a faulty SIM board, how would you rate the difficulty of replacing it? for a non-experienced pair of hands.. i saw the instructions on ifixit, looks do-able..
Please advice.. thanks

well.. in the end i solved my problem by replacing the SIM board. works like a charm afterwards. nothing to do with radio or other stuff. =)

Curios: Intermittent “Not registered on network" - anything other than bad SIM?

I’m rooted using qkster’s Heimdal 2.3.6 for almost a year... very few problems.
Lately I have a problem that occurs intermittently upon reboot.
1 – It shows a grey SIM card icon near upper right (not the blue sd scanning that always happens)
2 – Cannot make or receive calls, get message “not registered on network”.
3 - Can't use SMS or data
The only way to fix it is to reboot. Some reboots are successful, some not.
If successful, works fine until next reboot.
If not successful, doesn't work at all until next reboot.
The behavior only changes during reboot.. I guess maybe that’s when SIM card info gets red into memory?
I tried removing/reinstalling SIM card. Pressing on it during boot (other phones apparenlty have looseness of SIM card)..no change.
When the problem was really bad (9 out of 10 reboots come up bad), I swapped SIM cards with my daughter. **The problem followed the SIM card*.... Two successful reboots on my phone with her SIM card, Two unsuccessful reboots on her phone with my SIM card. Swapped my SIM card back into my phone and again unsuccessful reboots 9 times out of 10.
I called AT&T, they said go to their store and they’ll give me a new SIM card for free (which I’m planning on Friday)
To me, “intermittent” SIM card is a satisfying answer. It doesn't seem that software problem would create intermittent behavior like this. I haven’t really tried flashing new modem or playing wiht IMEI recovery stuff. ... I’m not tremendously familiar with those and don’t want to mess anything up when I have a success path to just swap SIM cards.
At this point I'm just curious and hoping to go into AT&T armed with more info.
Do you think is't a bad SIM card? Or is it instead maybe something simpler that could have been fixed without swappig SIM card?
And did my rooting the phone or other activities contribute to it?

you can try flashing a cwm-modem and then retry
you can try flashing one of zen's new kernel and retry
a factory reset and odin or heimdall back to stock and check for problems
sometimes it's the software corruption that reports the sim as invalid

Thanks qkster.
I'm thinking it must be the SIM because the problem followed the SIM to another phone and back.
I'm just not sure exactly what exactly is stored on the SIM and whether it could have been corrupted by my phone's actitivies and whether it's fixiable without SIM resplacement.
Again, just curiosity.

Np..sry I didn't notice that you had use the same sim and got the same problems on a different phone.
resolved
UPDATE - I went to AT&T today – new SIM card, phone works fine on three-in-a-row reboots. That seems to confirm bad SIM was the problem, although I don’t know why... seems like an uncomon problem for Infuse.
I asked the rep what might be the cause, he said it just happens every once in awhile.
It took me awhile to figure out.
Googling the error “not registered on network” gave nothing on Infuse forums (apparently it’s not a common failure... I’m just lucky).
Google search on that error led to lots of other devices including lots of HTC phones that had problems with the holder that could be corrected by inserting paper or tape as a wedge to put pressure on the SIM card. I actually seemed to have success with that once (because the problem was intermittent), so that kept me on that wrong track longer than I should have been.
Anyway, it’s here now for posterity for whatever future Infuser searches “not registered on network” and pretty straightforward in retrosepct. The key test to confirm of course is swapping SIM to another phone.

hi , this happens mostly when you insert a corrupted sim card .for example you cut it for creating micro sim and didn't do well . please be careful be aware of any pressure and hard action when you are trying to insert sim card .
anyway , you should show issue to a expert shopper to look accurately .

The HTC One S did have problems with the SIM card locking in place or something similar. I believe it was just loose and the SIM card couldn't be read. You should try and get a new SIM, if that doesn't work it is your phone.

My son try to help me and cut the sim. End up with broken sim tray and had to replace($89 at shop). Then I got the micro sim from carrier. 2 weeks latter I get the "no sim" message. Had to re-set the sim. Work for next week and happen again. Then I read about the "tape trick". Put 1 or 2 layers of clear tape on back of sim and the problem was gone. 3 months, and still do not have sim problem. I learn that most of the micro sim devices have that problem ( HTC and Samsung).

I have the same issue and tried everything . The sim works in others phones but not in the Huawei. And other Sims cards work on the huawei
Sent from my HUAWEI MT7-L09 using XDA Free mobile app
Has there been any luck? I am having the same issue however it worked the first time i put the sim in the phone but after that it no longer reads it and now every time i take it out there's multiple scratches on the sim card. I just bought it and was thinking about contacting Huawei about the warranty. Any thoughts?
You have probably managed somehow destroy the SIM card slot. I've noticed comparing to other phones that HAM7 SIM card slot is annoyingly tricky when putting your card in. It might have happened that the contacts have broken. I've read in some thread that there has been problems with it when putting card in. And no warranty applies here but it might depend on Huawei service.
I'm having the same problem with mine. I contacted Huawei and they actually answered me and said they were going to tell me where to send it in and that was the last I heard from them. Hell I'll pay to have it fixed just as long as it can be fixed.
Any luck? Was it the SIM card reader?
I think I have a similar problem, but I don't think I managed to damage the card reader.
Any help would be appreciated!

That problem is happening also with P8 Lite (phone from a friend of mine), SIM card is new, and no solution. Only reboot solves temporarily the problem
I am having a similar issue. I am overseas my phone is network unlocked. I brought a overseas SIM to get data. My phone does not recognise the new SIM. It still recognises the old SIM so I don't think there is a problem with the SIM reader. I have tried turning off and on and reboots etc. No luck. Really would like the data so that I can use google maps for navigating
