Kernel Testing - OnePlus 7 Pro Questions & Answers

Hello all,
I have kept my OP7P stock so far but am considering rooting it to test a few of the kernels being developed. If I go down this route which kernels should I be spending time with? I would like a kernel that keeps it simple and cleans up alot of the issues that OP kept in their kernel.
Thanks,
Steve

Which Rom in Your Opinion is the Best?

I'm coming from the Vibrant forums, and am looking for the best rom to flash onto my friends Captivate. Which rom in your opinion is the best for day to day use? Also are there any roms that still utilize the Touchwiz launcher?
Assonance is the best.
Sent using smoke signals.
Do you know of any roms that contain the Touchwiz launcher?
I'm pretty sure DG has kept a modified version of the TW Launcher in his latest Perception build. And considering it's a DesignGears Rom, you know it's pretty solid.
I'm personally using Auxura at the moment. My next step is going Phoenix (same dev) or Perception.
Alright thanks for the reply. Do you know if Odining back to stock is absolutely necessary? In the Vibrant forums it's totally optional and only precautionary, but it seems like nearly every Dev has it listed as a MUST DO in this forum.

It's paranoid and unnecessary unless you know/suspect that the ROMs use kernels with conflicting filesystems. Just wipe /data and /cache.
Ok guys we all know that best rom threads dont work, Best bet is to try them each over time and make your own mind up.

[Q] How to choose a ROM?

This is what I call a "high class problem". With so many ROMs to choose from, how does a noob like me decide. Aside from stability, we all probably have different wants and needs.
Can anyone who's checked out the majority of the available ROMs give the rest of us a rundown on the pros and cons of each ROM?
For myself, I'm looking for:
1. Basic
2. Reversible
3. No known issues with wifi, sms, battery drain, ciq, marketplace, etc.
Which one should I pic?

basically, you need to try them out and see for yourself.
the problem is, there will be another one up soon for you to try out
Like u said. To each his own. None of the roms here have major issues that I have flashed. All work and run well only issue is if there using da G's kernel which has Sod issues. Other than that flash away bruh.
Only u can prevent forest fires.....so choose well bruh. LOL

Which ones don't use Da G's kernel? I've read about something called a "stock-ish" kernel.

you can change kernels easier than changing roms. even if a rom has his kernel, you can flash whatever kernel you like in place of it....

Other than doing a complete Nandroid backup, is there anyway to just backup your current kernel prior to flashing a new kernel? SGS KERNEL FLASHER doesn't work on the Skyrocket, and i'd like to backup my stock kernel in case I need to reflash it.

its close. if i have time this weekend you will see something drop. i have a few more tweaks i want to do before i consider it ready. internally, im already up to beta8, lol. i hope to have beta10 release as an RC1 for everyone.
From what I seen so far I seen no reason to try them though somebody has to or they never get fully debugged.
Some of the ROMs are AT&T only ..... sorry got SGH-I727R
Some of them do have Rogers ROMs but I read of Sleep of Death and losing LTE connection..... sorry too buggy and I NEED LTE or I would of got the Galaxy Nexus.
Finally what I really want is ICS and NOT ICS themed ROMs
None of them are for me but I check everyday when a ICS ROM comes out I will try it.
Finally I recommend you NEVER try Roms if you are not sure that you can restore.
I have backuped my ROMs, Apps and Data, APNs I am 95% certain I can recover from anything.
For that other 5% I have Odin and the orginal Rogers ROM
Just to agree with everyone else, you've got to try them out. There's no harm in it as long as you've done your nandroid back up, you're pretty safe when it comes to reverting back to your previous ROM and settings.
Reading the features and change logs for each of them helps alot... but it still doesn't give you a full grasp of what it has to offer until you flash and test it.

Hi :) T-Mobile gave me this phone for free.

Hi guys im new to XDA but not new to Android development i used to have Cricket service (which sucked) and signed with T-Mobile and got this phone for free After spending all week reading all these threads i can say im one of the lucky ones since i got the good chip and good screen and rooted my phone and im running Sysnthetic_Aospx great rom btw. Any other good roms that i should try? Anywho im rooted and this isnt another "which rom is better" im actually a developer and i want to get my hands dirty and try and compile kernels any guides out there for me to start compiling and building my kernel environment?
I know my way around developing roms and wanted to know what developers develop for this device im willing to give you guys a hand if u need it or just be a tester.
Btw my name is Mr. Iffy ill try to help when i can hopefully one of the devs can help me with an Ice cream kernel to develop for this device. If someone can also tell me what devs are here i only see like 4 of them Synthetic and elginsk8r and awesome and cnote. Thanks guys hopefully i can be more of help around here.
Welcome! It's great to have another dev among us. Unfortunately, we have lost many of our devs to other devices, but a few talented ones remain. Hopefully you and the remaining devs will be able to bring a fully functional ICS Sense ROM to our little community.
Again, welcome!

Kernels are difficult, i dont really know enoguh to teach you but there are plenty of guides. It tooks me 3 hours to compile 10% of a kernel and the process failed due to one of the files. We should collarborate.

Hi, Chaos kernel is not compatible with stock rom. Every kernel that says CAF, is meant for CM and related roms.
Choose a kernel based on AOSP/STOCK, like franco, faux123 etc...
have this list as reference, http://forum.xda-developers.com/goo...dex-google-nexus-5-roms-kernels-mods-t2475401
CAF kernels are not compatible with the stock ROM.

You were able to troubleshoot it. And on the right way. :good:

Using a J700/F/H/M ROM on a J700T?

Would a ROM built for a J700F/H/M be compatible with a J700T? They have the same CPU and GPU. The only difference I notice is the supported network technologies, but I may of overlooked other differences.
If not completely compatible without modification, what would need to be changed?
I'm guessing I could just flash and see what happens, but I don't have time right now to deal with a bricked phone if it does go wrong.
Thanks.

Only some ROM's can be flashed and all features don't transfer. The wifi setup is different and so is the camera. The kernel codes are different as well so kernel specific ROM'S won't flash either.
Would it be easy to fix the wifi and such? I don't have much experience with ROM porting, and I was hoping that this device would be the one that I can finally get some experience, because you would think it would be pretty easy to convert J700F/H/M ROMS to J700T ROMS.

I would imagine it would be pretty easy to port over some of the ROM's, I'm currently running Alloosh's N7 V3, but without digging through the kernel codes for each ROM it's hard to say. You would have to set up your build environment and identify the differences and change them, trust me it's a long sometimes pain staking process ha. It's not as hard as building a different OS from source or porting over other software, but it will still take some time.
I've gotten the camera to finally work and wifi and Hotspot are running fine too, but there's still issues I'm looking into. Just start doing some research and see what you're comfortable with diving into.

You can make a backup of your current kernel using apps like flashify...etc
Thanks
I got the pixel experience rom to boot on my j700t with messi2050's v1 kernel. Rebooted every 2-10 minutes. It looked great i wish i could use it for my daily runner. I just reflashed pk6. Which rom to try this with next.

I'm using Messi's kernel on the Note 7 ROM by Allosh.
I use his kernel on almost every flash I do, dudes awesome for porting it for the T.
Too bad he removed all his downloads though. In the process of making my own SE permissive kernel for the J700t.
Just busy with life currently.
