i cannot seem to find a straight answer to whether ALL nexus s' ship carrier unlocked. i live in philippines and the phone is being offered through globe although i plan to use the phone under the smart network. i was under the impression that google shipped all of these unlocked but i'm hearing from few people that it is PROBABLY locked to globe. i also see unlocking services that offer unlock codes for this particular phone on their websites implying that some of them do come carrier locked. can anyone confirm if these are all unlocked or not? thanks
the nexus s is not "carrier unlocked". it never was advertised as. even though 2g(edge) will probably work on any carrier, 3G(or 4G) is carrier spscific. thats why there are different versions of the nexus s. it will work on other networks as long as the 3G bands are the same. the nexus s is bootloader unlocked(well, you can unlock/lock it yourself).

thanks for the quick response. no need for apologies... easy to get mixed up with all this cellphone termanology nowadays =). i just didnt want to say 'unlocked' because it wouldve been too vague. 'sim lock' probably wouldve been a better term in my original post.

None of them have any carrier lock. However you'll likely want the correct phone for your 3g frequencies. You could use the wrong one, you just won't get HSPA

I bought mine through Globe. I tested officemate#1's Sun sim and had officemate#2 send a text message to that sim while in my Nexus S, and I received it. I also sent a text message back to officemate#2 still using the Sun sim. and she got it back. So I guess we can say it's unlocked
Im not sure if I got lucky getting an unlocked Nexus S (even though there's a small sticker inside the Nexus S that says "this mobile may only be used with a Globe Sim card").
but i've read a lot of forum (since im researching about this because i have plans of using this in Singapore and i hate going through the hassle of unrooting and unlocking) and a lot of them say Nexus S units are unlocked even when a telecom carries it.

Google won't allow any provider to touch the software on the nexus line. So no matter what stickers it has or what the sales rep tells you, the phone is sim unlocked.

Will I be able to use Nexus S (SHW-M200k) in India
Recently I bought a SHW-200K in South Korea.
Will I be able to use the phone in India.
I wanted a SUPER AMOLED model and I read at many places that Nexus S comes in unlocked versions only.
Is it True?
Does your carrier in India use the same frequencies as the Korean model you bought? Did you at least look that up first?

I am not sure about the frequency used in India and Korea.
Before purchasing the product in Korea, I had checked if the phone would be working with the SIM card that I use in India. It was working.
The Nexus S variant that released in India says that it supports the following
2G Network GSM 850 / 900 / 1800 / 1900
3G Network HSDPA 900 / 1700 / 2100
I am trying to explore more about the frequency related things that you mentioned.
I was told that they all come carrier unlocked.

So as the title implies, im planning on purchasing the At &t carrier locked infuse 4g from the american EBAY site and wish to use it on an indian carrier.
Before i make the purchase, could somebody tell me about the risks involved and the success rate of the procedure mentioned in this forum?

as for unlocking it. it will be unlocked and work on any network, it would be up to you to see if you will be picking up 3G or Edge speeds.

I suppose on the rare chance it could be possible to get the wrong code, but honestly if you follow the instructions that are posted here; you shouldn't have a problem. I don't believe a sim card is required to get the code since you don't need one in the phone to mess around with it when you turn it on. I could be slightly wrong with that though, but I'm almost 100% certain that won't be necessary.
Make sure you post stuff in the correct forum in the future though.
There is minor chance if you use batch file unlock but not with manually finding a code. Make sure not to enter wrong unlock code entered more then like 5 times.
You will be able to use 3g on airtel gujarat and bsnl networks.
Infuse is dual band phone and not quad band which is standard now more or less and i wonder why samsung did that. So long story short it might not work on some networks india even for voice. Your best bet is galaxy series gsm phones.

Infuse is quad-band GSM which is standard. Quad-band UMTS is almost unheard of... Triband UMTS is the standard (two carrier-specific USA bands + the international UMTS2100 band)
Infuse is 850,1900 gsm and dual band umts not quad band gsm. See page 171 of manual.
Quad band that's what i thought earlier but has to make sure before selling on ebay and realized i was wrong. Many cellphone website list it as quad band gsm which is incorrect.

That's only FCC-required safety information for operation in the US. In the US, it will only operate on those bands so they only publish SAR information that applies to the USA.
In addition to those bands, it supports others. Complete list is:
GSM850/900/1800/1900, UMTS850/1900/2100
i am using unlocked infuse in india.... unlocked using method on this site... no issues...
I went to India on vacation last month... used my Infuse on three networks -- BSNL, Airtel, and T24. Worked on all three. Airtel was the best using 850 Band. T24 used 2100 band. Don't remember what band of BSNL it used.

Great. As I was selling on eBay, default specs eBay adds from cnet says dual band and manual also says so, I was going by that.
Useful info and real world experience from form member means I can take it with me in upcoming visit to homeland.

diablo009 - could you tell me if it allowed you to select the network operator manually OR how it brhaved if you ever went out of the coverage area? Did it select another network automatically?
Samsung Infuse 4G works in India!
Hi, Infuse works very nicely in India mobile networks, at least it works fine with Vodafone. This phone is sure an amazing phone I have seen so far till date!
It is available with ATT for around 70-100 US$ depending on season under 2 years contract. You have to pay around 320 US$ if you want to break the contract. Every month the minimum payment towards monthly usage charge is around 70US$ (features are mandatory, this is the lowest minimal). As you use and pay, every month the contract break amount will be reduced by US$ 10. Still this is worth for the mobile. Again you will be having a legal phone too.
It is a Quad band mobile. You need unlocking code to unlock the phone, the procedures listed for rooting and unlocking sometime works only with certain SIM available in US but the minute you try with a SIM from India the mobile will again ask for Unlock code. The maximum retries is 10 times (again this may differ with the firmware in your mobile).
This phone has an excellent screen quality, very good camera, 1.2 GHz processor, 2 GB for application, 14 GB internal memory, 2 GB SD Card (upgradeable to 32 GB), HDMI out, very slim and light, has scratch proof gorilla glass too.
Apt screen size, very good accessories (Desktop dock with its nice app, 3rd party 3400 mAH high capacity battery)
Install Nemus Launcher / Launcher Pro... it will make the phone pleasant using it!
Note: Upgrade to Gingerbread is not available till now and there is no clue on whether it will be available in future! this phone has an issue in connecting with Kies software from samsung though the menu in the phone for connectivity has it as one of the options of connectivity.

I've been using QPST and QXDM for almost 10 years now and I'm quite comfortable with what I can do using them.
If all goes according to plan, I will be receiving an OPO in the mail tomorrow.
Band unlocks are at the top of my list along with the following question:
Is the divide between CDMA and GSM truly artificial on modern Snapdragon phones?
The GSM/WCDMA/LTE band unlocks so far show that the antenna can handle almost any band thrown at it. So why not give CDMA a try?
I really have nothing to lose. I'm planning to move to T-Mobile anyway.

Were you able to get Verizon to work?
I currently have the Z3Compact and am considering getting the Z3 T-Mobile variant, as I'm a T-Mo prepaid customer. Just a few questions:
1) Can the Tmo variant Z3 be used on another carrier? Without unlocking the bootloader? I would like to root without unlocking the bootloader to still use all the Sony features (like with the Z3C). If I switch to another GSM carrier in a year, I'd like to still be able to use this device.
2) Is VoLTE up & working? Can it be used while rooted, locked bootloader? The same question with wifi calling.
3) Can the Tmobile ROM / Firmware be flashed on the International hardware and function exactly the same?
4) Will / can VoLTE / wifi calling come to the Z3C unlocked international variant?
1. Yes you can use it, BUT it only has 3 LTE bands and the 700Mhz (Band 12) LTE is not compatible with AT&T 700Mhz (Band 13). 700Mhz is important for indoor reception. Better to buy the regular Z3 as its a more global phone. Also if you still want the TMO variant you must use it on TMO for at least 40 days for them to unlock.
2. VoLTE works and rooting does not have anything to do with it so go ahead. WiFi calling is the same.
3. Don't do that as you may get no signal/baseband issues.
4. Don't know.
Extra: The T-Mobile variant has quality control issues and has been pulled from sale.... I am on my 8th Z3 after 7 exchanges. In addition TMO had to open a further 3-4 boxes on my third exchange to get a good one.
Just buy the international version..... They don't seem to be problematic like the TMO version and are LTE compatible with more networks.

1) If I only plan to use the phone in the US is it important that the international version is more 'global'? I'm kind of confused: Does the Tmobile version omit bands, or includes all the bands the int'l version plus band 12 / 700Mhz?
If you want to use it on AT&T the 700 Mhz band is not compatible. As you can see below the TMO variant is missing the 2 low bands needed by AT&T for better indoor reception. The global Z3 supports all the AT&T bands except T-Mobile's Band 12....

Thanks for clearing that up for me. I remember before buying my z3C hearing the info from GSMArena was inaccurate for one of the models.
I'm going to see if i can find more info on the quality control issues with the Tmo variant. I've owned Tmo branded versions of phones before and never had an issue.
I replace my phone every year to 18 months so if for some desperate reason I go to AT&T at least it will work in the meantime. I use Google Voice / Hangouts for calls so if I travel internationally I'd use wifi if the LTE reception isn't as good as on an international device for calls (won't use VoLTE), but since I'm in a Tmobile band 12 area I would like to use that.

The issue is not with T-Mobile, its the variant Sony made for T-Mobile.... When a carrier itself stops selling a device due to problems you are taking a big risk. T-Mobile was good about exchanges though immediate replacements unlike Sony which can take up to 3 weeks. Remember if you want exchanges for any issues with TMO you must buy from TMO itself otherwise you deal with Sony. Considering TMO no longer sells this device TMO won't cover you..... As you will be buying from a third party.
So I strongly suggest you get the international Z3, unless you can buy the TMO variant from TMO itself so you can get replacements easily.
Whatever you decide I hope you enjoy, its a good phone, battery life and screen are amazing.
Thanks for your advice. I bought a Z3 off eBay for cheaper than I got my Z3Compact for a few weeks ago. I've never had to return or repair a smartphone so hopefully I stay lucky.

Yea, I noticed that when I bought my Z3C. The Z3 apparently outperforms the Z3+. My only concern is if I can truly get used to the larger form factor, as I'm passing along my Z3C to someone else as a birthday gift. If not, I'll just sell it and get another Z3C for myself .
I asked this in the D6616 rooting thread but haven't gotten a reply yet: Will I need to downgrade, then root, then flash a pre rooted TFT firmware to get stock rooted (similar process to rooting without unlocking bootloader on the Compact) or can I just use the instructions here regardless of the firmware I have on my Z3? I think Kingroot sounds too shady and wouldn't want to use it.
Do you guys think the Verizon unit will have the same LTE bands as the Play Store model? I can get these st 2yr contract pricing on my Verizon business account and would like to use one on AT&T service, but need to be sure Band 12/17 is unlocked and ready for use.
The answer is yes, there are only different frequency bands for the intl and US versions. The US version, which Verizon is selling, supports all major carriers, according to Google.

My only concern is that the Verizon website does not list all US LTE bands such as Band 12 or Band 17. This was an issue with my Note 7 also. Band 12/17 were capable and supported by the hardware, but Verizon locked these from being used. It wasn't until I flashed AT&T Note 7 firmware onto my Verizon Note 7 unit that I was able to use those 2 LTE bands.

This is 100% wrong. No Verizon phone's have been locked to the carrier for a few years now.

Correct they have been carrier unlocked since the iPhone 5 came out. Verizon still locks the LTE bands for data, however. The only phones that have unlocked LTE bands on Verizon are iPhones, because Verizon does not/cannot tamper with the firmware before boxing the phones up.

Evidence? I've had no problem using several verizon phones on T-Mobile LTE bands.

That is because Verizon uses the same bands as TMobile in many areas of the country, so those bands are unlocked. Verizon does not use AT&T's primary bands at all, so they lock it out. (Band 17)
As a quick example, AT&T uses Band 3 in more rural areas and I was able to catch a bar or two of LTE here and there on a 100% stock Verizon Note 7 with AT&T sim card in it since Verizon also uses Band 3, , but it would quickly fall back to HSPA because it lost band 3 signal. I verified this with LTE Discovery app. At my office I only have Band 17 from ATT, so I was only getting HSPA. As soon as I flashed AT&T Note 7 firmware onto the Verizon Note 7, I had full LTE signal on Band 17.
Since Verizon cannot legally carrier SIM lock their devices anymore, they still do what they can to make the phones as unusable as possible on other carriers with their firmware, including a message that pops up every time you start the phone saying "this sim is not from Verizon"

The only reason LTE won't work on at&t is because at&t won't provision it unless it's an At&t branded phone. You can get around this by having them activte your sim in an at&t store phone. My brother used to have at&t and I gave him my old S7E from Verizon which had full LTE after doing that.

That is correct IF there isn't a LTE capable IMEI on your AT&T account, you would need to have them add the LTE capable IMEI and provision LTE. This issue is based on Verizon's firmware and their lockdown, however. I have thoroughly tested this and even entered service mode to see what bands are available with Verizon firmware vs AT&T firmware.
not good news for the verizon pixel with att. Some guy on the pixel xl xda reported he is getting only H+ with the verizon pixel xl. Definitely need more people to check it out. Donr believe PC mag one bit. They said bootloader was unlocked but it turned out to be LOCKED.

I'm using a VZW Pixel XL on AT&T and I have the best reception I have ever had. I don't know why he's not getting LTE coverage, but that's not my experience whatsoever.

If you install LTE Discovery you can see the band you're connected do. If the phone can connect to band 12 or 17, I would say the Verizon version most likely supports all LTE bands.
I am using a Verizon Pixel currently on a 850Mhz/1.9Ghz GSM and Band 4 (2.1Ghz) and I am experiencing no issues. I used my carrier's SIM, and the only thing I had to do differently was update the SCMS in the *#*#3646#*#* to match my carrier's Service Center ID. This allowed my SMS to work. I experience no issues here as the phone operates as though it were unlocked.
I've even used the VZW pixel on T-Mobile and had band 12 carrier aggregation with band 2. Definitely not a problem and same bands.
I believe the only difference is the imei disallows bootloader unlocking. And the post boot Verizon three app install (which is an easy uninstall)
Doesn't att require the imei added for LTE? They audit accounts on the regular and if they find an unknown imei they disallow LTE.

Thanks for posting, VZW wouldn't lock certain frequencies (12 and 17) on the Pixels like others have stated since their phones have been fully unlocked for years. This phone works with all US carriers.

Yup and on top of that they seem 100% feature parity. I've even seen (on my Verizon sim) the option for volte video calling. And volte voice definitely works on T-Mobile as well as wifi calling.
Just the locked bootloader is the only downside.

This is 100% incorrect. It is NOT locked to a carrier, and does support all bands. I have been using my VZW Pixel on other carriers.

The misinformation and confusion about this phone in general all the way around astounds me. It's actually rather simple. The only major difference in the Verizon variant from the play is that the bootloader is locked.
