How is this better then just asking T-Mobile for the unlock code?
I believe they will only unlock it after 6 months of service

90 days... But with the ETF, it's not like you're going to buy from T-Mobile then cancel and use it elsewhere after unlocking it through this guy. It's much easier to buy it off of a current T-Mobile subscriber if you plan on using it with another network.

you can just buy it from somewhere else. e.g. eBay and you might want to use it on other carriers. or you might just want to have an unlocked phone in case you travel and put different sim card on it.

Right, I understand the reason for having an unlocked phone... I don't think I'd pay that much for an unlock, but whatevs.
It seems like the XDA Dev team will probably have a way to unlock it in a couple weeks anyway especially if the OS is open.

You have to remember, it's only on T-Mobile in the US for now... I don't know if I should expect the developers of SIM unlocks (olipro/cmonex have done most of the work in that department) to get their hands on one... Maybe they'll grab one just for development, but for all we know their only plans could be to stay with the Touch Diamond/Pro/HD.
I dunno. We still don't really know how "open" the Android OS is yet. Although the kernel is open and freely available, it handles low-level hardware functions. SIM functions seem to be handled higher up in the Android stack and not all the Android source code has been released yet. Unless I'm missing something, it's a wait-and-see situation as far as SIM unlocking goes.
Even if I were to want an unlocked G1 (which I don't) I'd be wary of shelling out $50 for an unlocker to a phone that hasn't been released yet. And honestly, tmo's unlocking policy is very liberal as it is.
i am not a t-mobile customer, but the rest of my family is. i buy t-mobile phones all the time and i get the unlock code no problems. i'm not sure on if they are gonna give the unlock code right away, but if not i can always get the unlock code through my family. i hope we get a free unlocker before i get around to getting the phone
i work for t-mobile UK and on a contract you only have to have the phone for a month then you can buy an unlock code for £15
so you save yourself alot of money doing it via T-mobile UK plus they now issue most unlock codes on the spot unlike their old 28days in the post way
T-Mobile USA's policy is one, free unlock code every 90 days.
And I don't understand why you'd care about SIM-unlocking it, as the US version is really only good on T-Mobile's 3G network. T-Mobile uses different 3G frequencies than AT&T and the rest of the world. As I understood it, the European version will have a different radio set inside. I'd like to hope I'm wrong, but I understood that to be the case.

You're confusing GSM frequencies with 3G frequencies. No phone maker yet has made a phone containing all the GSM frequencies, all the 3G frequencies, *and* the new tmo USA 3G frequencies. You can use the phone anywhere, but the 3G data would be crippled on anything but tmo-USA...and even tmo has said that the phone would pretty much suck without 3G.
ok you may be right about the frequencies
but the spec dose say that
HSDPA/WCDMA:
Europe: 2100 MHz
so it may not work with at&t 3g
but it might work in EU on 3g
Again, that's not what I'm hearing. The G1 in the US is configured for download on tmo's 1700MHz spectrum and upload only on 2100MHz. If I recall correctly, Europe does it all on 2100. That's the part I hope I'm wrong on, but just having "2100" on it doesn't mean it's configured for the particular part of the band that the Europhones use.

Euro/Asia 3G (WCDMA Band I) uses 1900 for UL and 2100 for DL while T-Mobile AWS (WCDMA Band IV) uses 1700 for UL and 2100 for DL. However, WCDMA Band I was called UMTS 2100 therefore the confusion.
BTW the T-Mobile G1 is a dual-band HSDPA phone (T-Mobile AWS and UMTS 2100)
I know this is an odd request, but is there anyway to use the internet while talking on the phone. Normally I wouldn't care but I'm tired of the iPhone goons hassling me about it since those new commercials.
If not would there be a way if I unlocked my phone for GSM so I could talk on one frequency and surf on another?
Please direct me to a link if this has already been answered, I searched and didn't find anything.
Whoo boy, the old GSM vs. CDMA debate. No to your first question; it's a technology limitation of CDMA, which is why AT&T loves flaunting that fact. GSM also has the leg up in the number of simultaneous connections for conference calling. If you're looking for ammunition, CDMA generally enjoys better penetration of structures, and I know that I have found my service on Sprint to be stronger and much more reliable than my old plan with AT&T. Some people would even say that CDMA offers better call quality than GSM, but that's a huge debate with opinions on both sides. Also, GSM's encryption method was cracked recently, making calls potentially more vulnerable to eavesdropping. Finally, even when I had my old Tilt on AT&T I don't think I did too much surfing while talking on the phone; I really don't think it's as amazing a feature as they make it out to be.
For your second question, the CDMA Worldphone edition Touch Pro 2 used by Verizon and Sprint does have a GSM radio, but the question has been asked before if both networks can be used simultaneously and I believe the answer is always no. Anyone else feel free to correct me if I'm wrong.
last I checked in order to use cdma/gsm phone networks at the same time can't you just pop in a sim card!!!!!

one word IMPOSSIBLE!!!!!!!!!! GSM and CDMA are hardware radios an unlock is IMPOSSIBLE unless the phone is a world phone with both CDMA and GSM but your phone doesn't qualify so try getting a GSM/CDMA hybrid and then come back to me. However verizon will upgrade to LTE which is GSM based!!!!!!!! watch em LTE will allow voice and data at the same time. When LTE upgrade is complete say goodbye and good riddance to CDMA it will be shut down soon!!!!!

qjsmartphone - I thought that the TP2 was a world phone and thus held both antennas for cdma and gsm?
trogdor1138 -thanks for the input.
now I'm with sprint, and they offer 4G. This may be an ignorant comment, but can't a world phone with both antenna's say call on cdma and use the 4G provided by sprint? Or am I missing something? I kind of new at this so forgive the question if it is stupid. If there is a wiki on it please give me the link and I will be glad to read up. Thanks

I'm not sure what you are talking about, but CDMA variant of Touch Pro 2 does have both GSM and CDMA hardware in them.
Also, LTE and WiMAX is a two new 4G technologies that will eventually replace 3G data.
LTE is not based on GSM, they are two different communication technologies.
Back to OP's question, if you are using CDMA branded TP2 you cannot surf and talk at a same time. It is limitation on CDMA technology.
4G and 3G is not compatible, is your grandparent's old 2G phone do 3G? no.
How about your 3G phone accesing 2G? yes. Usually when newer technology is being deployed, they make sure that it is backward compatible, so that they can lower battery consumption and remain accessible to area where new technology is not yet available.
Just be near wifi and then show them you can surf while talking.

I thought Sprint/Verizon phones with both GSM/CDMA radios cannot use AT&T nor T-Mo SIM cards. I thought they only accepted the GSM SIM cards of countries outside the US.
Wait... HardSPL fixes that, doesn't it?... Oh well, I think I should stop stalking the CDMA forums when I have almost no idea on anything CDMA-related!
But, I'm still in favor of the WiFi suggestion!
mac people live in their own little world. don't let them bother you. sure, they can talk and surf the web at the same time...if they have 3g coverage. but there are areas where they have no coverage at all let alone 3g. then they can use the 'paper weight mode'. i also love how they tout their app store meanwhile we've had multiple wm app stores for years already. also i get to choose what apps i want to use without htc or sprint telling me what i'm allowed to.

yes you can use any sim card if your phone is sim unlock buy the Sprint TP2 is not working with us 3G

I called up VZW and told them I was going to Europe and wanted to use prepaid SIM cards instead of paying Big Red the $$. They gave me the SIM unlock code and now I can use T-Mo or AT&T SIM cards with no problem. Only downside is that their GSM frequencies are slightly off from the rest of the world so no high-speed data when using VZW on GSM carrier in the states...

The Verizon TP2 has a simple SIM lock on it which is similar to standard GSM SIM locks. Remove the SIM lock and you can use any SIM card with a compatible network, including US networks.
The Sprint TP2 doesn't have a standard SIM lock, but instead has the US frequency bands disabled. Hence the need for a new radio.
So as the title implies, im planning on purchasing the At &t carrier locked infuse 4g from the american EBAY site and wish to use it on an indian carrier.
Before i make the purchase, could somebody tell me about the risks involved and the success rate of the procedure mentioned in this forum?
Dont want the thing bricking on me or anything.....=x
Wrong Forum buddy!
as for unlocking it. it will be unlocked and work on any network, it would be up to you to see if you will be picking up 3G or Edge speeds.
Ah sorry, ill be moving this to the Q & A section.
Btw do i absolutely NEED a sim card pre installed inside the phone to unlock?
And how safe is the unlock procedure?
Like is there a chance that i may not get the right code or something?
I suppose on the rare chance it could be possible to get the wrong code, but honestly if you follow the instructions that are posted here; you shouldn't have a problem. I don't believe a sim card is required to get the code since you don't need one in the phone to mess around with it when you turn it on. I could be slightly wrong with that though, but I'm almost 100% certain that won't be necessary.
Make sure you post stuff in the correct forum in the future though.
There is minor chance if you use batch file unlock but not with manually finding a code. Make sure not to enter wrong unlock code entered more then like 5 times.
You will be able to use 3g on airtel gujarat and bsnl networks.
Infuse is dual band phone and not quad band which is standard now more or less and i wonder why samsung did that. So long story short it might not work on some networks india even for voice. Your best bet is galaxy series gsm phones.

Infuse is quad-band GSM which is standard. Quad-band UMTS is almost unheard of... Triband UMTS is the standard (two carrier-specific USA bands + the international UMTS2100 band)
Infuse is 850,1900 gsm and dual band umts not quad band gsm. See page 171 of manual.
Quad band that's what i thought earlier but has to make sure before selling on ebay and realized i was wrong. Many cellphone website list it as quad band gsm which is incorrect.

That's only FCC-required safety information for operation in the US. In the US, it will only operate on those bands so they only publish SAR information that applies to the USA.
In addition to those bands, it supports others. Complete list is:

Samsung Infuse 4G works in India!
Hi, Infuse works very nicely in India mobile networks, at least it works fine with Vodafone. This phone is sure an amazing phone I have seen so far till date!
It is available with ATT for around 70-100 US$ depending on season under 2 years contract. You have to pay around 320 US$ if you want to break the contract. Every month the minimum payment towards monthly usage charge is around 70US$ (features are mandatory, this is the lowest minimal). As you use and pay, every month the contract break amount will be reduced by US$ 10. Still this is worth for the mobile. Again you will be having a legal phone too.
It is a Quad band mobile. You need unlocking code to unlock the phone, the procedures listed for rooting and unlocking sometime works only with certain SIM available in US but the minute you try with a SIM from India the mobile will again ask for Unlock code. The maximum retries is 10 times (again this may differ with the firmware in your mobile).
This phone has an excellent screen quality, very good camera, 1.2 GHz processor, 2 GB for application, 14 GB internal memory, 2 GB SD Card (upgradeable to 32 GB), HDMI out, very slim and light, has scratch proof gorilla glass too.
Apt screen size, very good accessories (Desktop dock with its nice app, 3rd party 3400 mAH high capacity battery)
Install Nemus Launcher / Launcher Pro... it will make the phone pleasant using it!
Note: Upgrade to Gingerbread is not available till now and there is no clue on whether it will be available in future! this phone has an issue in connecting with Kies software from samsung though the menu in the phone for connectivity has it as one of the options of connectivity.

Officially the N5 does not support Verizon explicitly, it may work but that is dependent on Verizon allowing you to activate the phone on their network. you can try but there are no guarantees. Personally i wouldn't hold my breath in anticipation.

CDMA bands, which is used for voice capabilites and 3G data: No. The Nexus 5 supports CDMA bands 0, 1, and 10. Verizon uses 2 and 5.
EDIT: It looks like my cross-referencing led me astray. Verizon and Sprint use the same 3G frequencies, Band 0 and 1, at 850 MHz and 1900 MHz, respectively. The Nexus 5 supports CDMA bands 0, 1, and 10. In theory, assuming you can get Verizon to sign off on it, it might actually be possible.
LTE bands, which is used for....LTE data: Yes, but it's very very limited. The Nexus 5 supports bands 1, 2, 4, 5, 17, 19, 25, 26 , and 41. Verizon mainly uses band 13, but is slowly rolling out band 4 support, but the odds are it won't be in your area right now, and the roll-out is slow.
EDIT: Again, more research suggests that through firmware editing, it might be possible to enable band 13 LTE on the Nexus 5. This is due to the Snapdragon 800 having band 13 support. It would be along the lines of enabling band 4 LTE support on the Nexus 4 (although we had official legacy radios that supported it, so we had something to go off of).
Besides: look at how Verizon is handling the activations of the Nexus 7 deb ("mobile version," if you will). They won't officially activate them, so you have to activate another device on their network and plug that SIM card into the N7, essentially working around them.
So, in short, no it's possible I would not buy this phone if you are locked to Verizon. My advice? Ditch Verizon ASAP. Not just for the phone, but because they are a shady company that blocks competition, among other things.

From the chart Both Sprint and VZW uses the same 3G FRQ only different Voice FRQ but each carrier can ride the Voice on the 3G bands so conceivably it can still work.

I thought that Verizon uses bands 0 and 1 for CDMA. Well I got the information from Wikipedia here: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Verizon_Wireless#Radio_Frequency_Summary so I guess it could be wrong.
But Sprint devices can roam on Verizon's network, so that means that the Nexus 5 will be able to connect to a Verizon CDMA tower. The only problem is getting it to comemct to Verizon, and we still don't know what will happen when we pop an already active Verizon SIM card into the Nexus 5 yet.

Just because some sprint devices can roam on Verizon, doesn't mean ALL can. Every phone doesn't have the exact same frequency bands. That said, I would Imagine any newer cdma phone will be able to ride both verizon and sprint CDMA networks.

All LTE bands are supported by the baseband IP in the Snapdragon but it depends on the FW.
Activation of course is another story ie Nexus 7 LTE. Preactive SIMs should work but its up to VZW to accept it on their towers.
Well I can still hope. I'm on contact with Verizon until February and I'm about ready to kill my GNex. And I can't just go pay full price for a phone. Too much money, but the Nexus 5 is actually reasonable without contract. That's why I want it so bad.
And even when my contract is up, I can't switch, because everybody else is on my family plan. And I can't just go to T-Mobile $30 unlimited prepaid because there is no T-Mobile coverage at my house. (So frustrating, my housing development has towers for all the other three carriers, but when T-Mobile got their tower approved, the STUPID school people and parents got it blocked because it was within 1500 ft of the school. Like seriously I hate those people who appealed that, but that's another argument) And AT&T is too expensive for a single line. And Sprint just flat out sucks.
So I'll be on Verizon for a while, unless they can fight off those school people and get their tower built.

if you want other options, I've had lots of luck buying phones on Swappa.
If Verizon said yes, how would the non-LTE part of the phone know which network to hook up with? WithSprint and Verizon phones, they go automatically to their own network when activating. Would different CDMA networks pop up like with a GSM phone?
I noticed my verizon z4 has a lot less band support especially on 4G comparing to unlocked version. This may be silly but I wonder if unlocking it through Verizon would somehow bring those band back as I travel internationally from time to time (probably should've avoided this version in the first place though).

No it won't. Unlocking it only lets you use a different SIM card
I know this is an old thread, but I bought a Verizon Z4 and I'm using it on a provider that uses band 7 and 28 (band 28 doesn't appear as supported on a list I found online), and they both work (as SignalCheck says), so I don't know how accurate the "less bands" info is.
