Is there any ROM that supports DNG/RAW photos and isn't severely outdated? - ONE Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Been trying to figure out a way to get RAW image support back without having to deal with broken apps and the playstore thinking my phone is incompatible with half the apps I use, and I can't find anything at all. Any advice would be appreciated.

Since Jgcaap rom nothing has appeared, everyone uses sultans blobs/cam...i would add long exposure to the "list" aswell.

Thanks for your response and for the links.
Apologies for my ignorance on this matter, I'm basically clueless when it comes to android ROMs. In the jgcaap thread, many users are discussing how a particular build has vastly superior camera quality but lacks security patches. What would your advice be if for someone who only cares about app compatibility and camera quality? Is there a specific build of jgcaaps I should look for?

Hi everyone has a different opinion, i think you should try the roms and decide for yourself. I use Jgcaap rom, i dont panic about the security issues... its a phone, of all the apps i use only one doesnt work with it, i think if you change the device firgerprint id with magisk all the apps will show up but i havent test it. Good Luck

Reflashing; 6.x ROM (which) or 7.x ROM (which)?

Im currently on stock 6.x but my phone is getting pretty full and bugs out sometimes so I think its about time I do a fresh flash.
Is it possible to do a nandroid backup to a NAS server? A 64GB nandroid backup to a already full phone is kind of hard.
Next, I can either go 6.x or 7.x
7's notification style and doze battery life optimizations seems nice. Automatic system updates using another partition also seem good but I imagine that can only be used on Pixel.
6.x I imagine though is more stable.
So which ROM?
I personally like Android nougat more than M. Also, i find it stable enough for daily driver. I have been switching between various Nougat ROMs to find out which i like more. I am finally settled with Cm 14.1 nightlies for now.
RESURRECTION REMIX [5.8.0]

Resucrrection is way to bloated/heavy. Im sure our phone can take it but.
Looking for a Marshy? Sultans is your best bet. Simple. Stable. Clean. Reliable.
I tested almost all nougat roms. I'm stuck with legend right now, for me seems the most balanced and without serious bugs.
What about jgcaap's rom? Isn't it any good?
Official Nightly vs Jcaap vs Resurrection Remix, which is the best?
Thank you for threads like this - you can't ask in a particular ROM's thread about other ROMs... I tried the "unofficial" (CAF) 7.1.1 Ressurection Remix and I've had problems with the screen going black, doesn't mean anyone else will. So, I'm also looking for which 7.1.1 ROM to try next and want other's opinions because I just don't have time to try ALL of them myself, full wipe, install all the apps and data again, setup everything... For a day or two then on to the next over and over, but I do try to try at least a few.
The ONLY reason why I don't want 7.1.1 for certain right now is no Xposed for it yet. But, perhaps I can live without Xposed for a while as long as I have: root, adblock, privacy guard, profiles...
I'm thinking to try the "Official" 7.1.1 Resurrection Remix next? Opinions?
I recommend jgcaap's CM14.1. It's been very fast and stable with good battery life for me. He's also busy implementing Sultan's camera blobs, so camera quality is also going to be nice. Try it out for yourself, you won't regret it!
Which nougat ROM has the best battery life and the smartbar/fling navbar features?
I'm not giving up Xposed without that navbar LOL
Oh, didn't remember that Xposed isn't avalaible for 7.x yet.
Forget it. 6.x based ROMs then.
Any other NON CM based recommendations?

I'm having issues finding the ROM that works best for me too. I've had to resort to cm ROMs because I can't find an aosp based MM ROM that has the latest security patches. There's so few of them too . I'm currently on jgcaaps cm13 running lightning caf v50 color. Its pretty stable, but I can't for the life of me figure out why the darn thing bootloops immediately after setting selinux to enforcing. I've always set it to enforcing for security reasons in the past, and had no issues. Jgcaaps cm13 I think has the best camera hal of all the ROMs because its using color os. Not caf, sultan, or cyanogenmod (I don't even know how people consider cm hal usable).
For 7.1.1 I've tried some of the ROMs but they're missing way too many features IMO. The camera hal is one (most are using cm or caf, meh) the only 7.1.1 ROM I know of that possibly has color os hal is jgcaaps cm14. Another thing is xposed. I don't like to give google full permission over my entire system to record and do as they please, therefore I use microg. The only thing is to get micro g working, you need to have a ROM that either supports fake signatures in the developer options (ROM maintainer has to implement this, its not too hard) or an xposed module to force fake signatures. I haven't come across a single ROM here that has micro g support so I'm forced to use xposed. On top of that I use the xprivacy xposed module which is miles better at protecting your privacy than privacy guard or appops.
So yeah personally I think jgcaaps cm13 ROM is the best we have right now for MM roms. All the other MM ROMs haven't been updated with security patches in quite a while from my experience. If you don't use micro g or xposed then I would recommend jgcaaps cm14 for the color os hal, but I havent checked out his ROM in a while. I wish there was still some development on MM for our oneplus one because it seems I'm stuck between choosing discontinued MM ROMs for features + stability or actively maintained ROM with bugs + less features. I've been working on finding out how to merge security patches in to discontinued ROMs because of this. But I don't have much time in my life right now sadly.

danieldmm's TugaPower ROM has microG support out of the box and there's no need to install it as a system app. HAL is still CM but it is updated very frequently (I think it supports delta OTA updates) and has latest security patches too. Had absolutely no bugs for me when I used it last time :good:

Suggest the best Nougat Rom for my moto droid turbo(Indian Variant)?

I want to install a rom, Nougat based which has very minimal bugs. Should be best in performance and battery backup. I am very new to this Moto community. So confused to select. Suggest me some best rom.
My personal opinion based on what I see people write in the threads. If you want Nougat, any of these three ROMS have very high reviews. You can go to those threads and ask questions.
[ROM][All Quark][7.x] Resurrection Remix
[ROM][UNOFFICIAL]AOKP 7.x For All Quark
[ROM][Quarks][LOS/CM 14.1 Unofficial][7.1.x][2016-12-30] (hybrid of CM14 and Resurrection Remix)
_______
If you want the complete list of ROMs available here you go:
[ROMs][Quarks][List for Moto Maxx, Moto Turbo and Droid Turbo]
https://forum.xda-developers.com/showpost.php?p=73917795&postcount=91
I only bothered with Nougat and Marshmallow, didn't list any Lollipop ROMs as those are very outdated.
I'm still using RR 6.X (Marshmallow) by the way on mine and my wife's XT1225.
________________
EDIT:
I am now running of those top three -- RR 7.x instead of RR 6.X, which I was running at the time of this answer back in April. Back then I wasn't ready to move to Nougat from very stable RR 6.x, but now have.
But still these are probably the top three. It's my opinion, based on comments, questions, developer response in the threads.

None of those three ROMs would have that issue. All three of those devs have been active for quite a while with these Quarks. We welcome all devs -- but I will trust those who have proven over and over and over to be responsive to users questions and will help solve issues.
I was on CM12.1 (Lollipop) until last October 2016, and it was rock stable. So, I was loathe to change, but I went with RR 6.x (Marshmallow) -- yes about the time Nougat ROMs were being made. I'm still on RR 6.X, but I'm active in all the Nougat ROM threads. I see the complaints, I answer questions, and I know what are ROM issues and what are really user issues.
But when I do switch to Nougat, I am leaning slightly towards RR 7.X, just because I've had a very good experience with RR 6.X on my phone and my wife's phone. And of the three LG phones I support (for friends), I installed RR 6.X on two of those, so I'm more familiar with Resurrection Remix layout.

You should ask the question in the RR 7.X ROM thread, where users of that ROM can help you. I'm not using Nougat ROM myself.
I have flashed the RR Nougat, coming from a MM stock. Could it be realistic I experience some loss of performance at high demand tasks (like games?) and quicker drain of battery?

Normally there's a trade-off of performance vs battery, depending on which kernel governor you choose. But you are experiencing both?
For instance "conservative" governor gives better battery life, "performance" governor of course gives more performance but will drain battery quicker. Then there's a whole bunch of others (especially in @bhb27 custom kernel, which you have to install separately from any ROM) that promises to give better battery AND performance. Or at least a good compromise.
I'm currently using "alucard" both as governor and hotplug.
https://androidmodguide.blogspot.com/p/blog-page.html
A favourite choice and one of the original governors that Alucard_24 made. Alucard is based on ondemand but has been heavily tweaked to bring better battery life and performance. It has been known to be battery friendly without sacrificing much performance.

I can remember playing aorund with CPU governors on my Xperia Pro and DROID 4, but with the current custom kernel I am using bhb27I can't find the option to switch between governors, or set certain profiles at all. I could have been missing it.
Though, in short: does MM have longer battery durance and better performance? Cause I can't find any conclusion on this, perhaps a well respected expert like you might be able to tell me?
Also thank you for the info so far, I am surprised the attention you give to devs and members to help those in need! :good::good:

You are welcome.
To change CPU governors, hotplugs, I/O schedulers and such, you need Kernel Aduitor app found over in the @bhb27 kernel thread.
He provides a modded version of the app that works well both his custom kernel and the ROM "stock" kernel. His custom kernel has even more options.

I already found some modifications, set the governor to 'conservative' and it gave my Droid an instant boost and somehow a longer lasting on battery as when it was slower. I have no idea why, probably locks or such occured? Anyway it works flowless now and I will take your app also in consideration.

Several Noob questions about custom ROMs?

Hi guys,
I always read in the Xda forum but never wrote or asked a question...usually someone already asked them.
so I have the Mi 5S PLUS...but I hate the miui UI. can't get used to it. And yesterday I finally found that there are custom ROM for this device.
So I got few questions.
1. As far as i know, the source code hasnt been released but should be released soon. should I wait for a ROM that uses the source code?
2. I see that the most popular costum ROMs for this device are - Lineage and resurrection remix. In terms of battery life, stability and bug free rom. which one is the best?
3. I see there is one ROM with the tag [OFFICIAL]....does this mean it uses the source code? if not, what does it mean?
thanks a lot to those that answer

2.You can check yourself
3. Official means official rom from lineage team or other maintainers just like Global MIUI rom from xiaomi is official while xiaomi.eu is unofficial .
You can check for source in rom page for more info about what device tree and source code it uses

The reason that people don't recommend one over the other is because YMMV. I know I came from a cyanogen ROM with my previous phone and dirty unicorns on the phoen before that (along with a whole set of custom ROMs). In the end though, I found them all to be "similar". Yes, some do some things differently like some offer a lot of CPU governors, while others keep the list pretty tight. Some default with swap space on, some don't use swap space at all (this phone shouldn't need swap space). Sometimes the difference between two ROMs is just the launcher.
For me, I don't really like the MIUI launcher. It feels a lot like an iphone. This isn't a bad thing. Some people like it. I just install Apex (from the play store) and my issues with the ROM were mostly resolved. The only remaining problem is MASS STORAGE. But, based on my experience with mly previous phone, I doubt I'll find a ROM that natively supports it. But I know how to hack my way in and get that going (just need root... which requires an unlocked bootloader... and if I am reading things correctly, you need to wipe everything which I currently not willing to do... but may have found a workaround... going to test it out tomorrow).

Wiping everything is easy, yes, but I want to avoid wiping if I don't have to.
Got the phone rooted without needing to wipe it (yay), but getting mass storage enabled failed on me. I can't seem to write to the file I need to which confuses me... but that is off topic so I'll refrain from boring you with details on that.
Back on topic, if you are switching to a custom ROM you will need to wipe things. I personally would wait for a custom kernel to come out before you start playing with custom ROMs unless the custom ROM has a feature you REALLY want. With my previous phones, the one that had a custom Kernel as well as custom ROMs was a lot more stable and had a lot fewer bugs. The one that had only factory kernel, the custom ROMs were flaky. They mostly worked, but they did have bugs. If I got a phone call or called somebody and they hung up first, it would crash the dialer and the dialer would fail to start again until I rebooted. Now a custom kernel may not have helped that, but since the kernel was based on a previous version of Android, it was unstable.
The current custom ROMs (that I have seen) are all based off of the stock kernel and not newer ones so I personally do not expect to see much benefit in changing ROMs except having different bloat and a different launcher. Well, at lest for the things I use my phone for. But YMMV.

What Stock-based ROM are you still using (2018)?

Just got a spare Z3, and since this device has been quite inactive on developments and such, the most preferred route is to stay stock for stability.
Now, I looked on our Android Development section and there seems to have a couple of stock-based ROMs which are good, and now, even in 2018, I was wondering what stock-based ROMs you guys are still using?
Any bias comments are welcome as long as it's spoken through experience. Also, a combination of Stock-based ROM a Custom Kernel would be nice to hear as well, if you use those.
Thanks guys for noticing~

But the best rom for battery is still slimm rom. Whatever lets turn back to my question, only because it is not possible use cyberian cam on carbon oreo i will go for carbon nougat with xperia ui. Can you share your experience with snapdragon camera if you use oreo version?

RN5 Global Vanilla Camera App

Hi Guys,
Let me just say beforehand that I did try and read threads with this topics this but I admit I'm a bit lost. I see that most camera apps for RN5 Global are for unofficial roms, but I'm still on vanilla version.
Is there any working camera app that work better than stock camera app? Even if it's not 100%. I know Arnova's for instance are great and I understand it doesn't work great.
For the kind soul that takes the time to reply, many thanks!
first of all, shouldn't this post be on discussion section?
now, what do you mean by vanilla? miui? its not vanilla. it's xiaomi's own custom made rom. they modified vanilla aosp same as other custom roms you see. here you should say you're on stock rom or miui rom.
and unofficial rom means? all other custom roms? like PE, AOSiP, AEX etc.? they are officially supported by their respective devs. and here you should say you're not on aosp based rom or custom roms.
and now for the camera part. stock miui camera is considered well enough and some say works better than gcam.
if you want gcam you can try different versions and see which works for you. as for now, arnova gcam is partially working and a dev is working on a fix magisk zip. that means you need root by magisk to apply that. that'll fix front cam issue that we're facing now.
and if you don't know, you need camera2api enabled for gcam to work. to enable this you need root. you can unroot after enabling this if you please so. and you'll be vanilla again
there's also nokia camera port
