[Q] Best phone for audio

I own a SGS2 at the moment. I like it. But I don't rate it listening to music through earphones. I am using some Sennheiser CX300s which are not the best but much better than any bundled earphones.
I've been reading about Wolfson DACs and so forth.
So which phones deliver a good loud sound through the earphones? And on the subject which phones have a clear loud speaker/s? Its annoying because the reviews rarely cover these areas. And even the manufacturers don't really bother publishing audio specs. Music is a killer app for me.
It's kind of funny but the SGS2 downgraded to a Yamaha DAC and has sound that isn't quite as good as the original SGS. All the variants including the Nexus S have the Wolfson DAC that is actually pretty good. Used with Voodoo sound, it's a good audio player. I use custom IEMs and enjoy the sound alot. Hope it helps
Come on folks this is an important topic. BTW does anyone know if the LG Optimus 7 has the Wolfson wm8994 headphone amp. And what are the best Nokia phones like for audio.
I have have to move on to the iPhone 5 or a Nokia Windows Phone in a few months. The SGS2 is not a great mp3 player imho.
Fidoz~
I think Iphone offered quite good sound quality + iphone 5 is coming out soon, you might want to check it out. The best way is go buy those $500 earphone for a good sound.

i own a HTC HD2, sound is pretty good, but i have to say Iphones sound great.

The iphone and ipods both have ****ty built in amps. I would only use them with a line out dock to bypass the internal amp, and buy a nicer portable amp.

dac/sound quality ?

I've done a bit of searching but hvaen't been able to find much info. Does the tf700 have a decent dac (i know the speakers are said to be weak; but how about audio out to headphones/iem ) ?
Should it be on par/worse/better than the tf101 ? Hum. Actually i don't even know if the dac is built into the tegra 3 line or if asus picks the chip.

My infinity wont be here until tomorrow but I did some tests with my TF201 before I sold it and it sounded just fine. Just as good, if not better than my mac mini HTPC. I was using power amp and 320K MP3's to a good ONKYO amp and JBL speakers....
Got my. 700 today. Really a slick tab overall, but the speaker is terrible, especialy coming from the a700. At least i get smooth playback now. Too quiet and tinny to even consider close to functional, definately requires an audio out of somesort.
Edit suppose i should mention im already using equalizer to boost it.

First of all, I'm not an audiophile person.
Just testing now playing flac from built in music player on Beyerdynamic DT 770 Pro 80 ohm.
On full volume on the tf700 it is loud enuf, but it seems to my untrained ear that it cant really drive the headset to the max on the bass side.
Hmm. Just did a side-by-side comparison with my computer (using some 3-4 years old logitech 2.1 setup) and the bass seems better on the infinity then on my computer. A richer sound. And it drives the headset generally better. I'm really suprised by that actually.. Maybe time to by a DAC for my computer I guess.
Actually, the DAC is a basic one and, as on every "mainstream" hardware, it lacks a lot of bass (I tried it through custom in-ears). However, what really made me throw the idea of using it as a true nomad player is the constant background noise that is especially strong (as on every phone). I don't know how to name this phenomenon in English (in French it is called "souffle", meaning blow or whistle) but it really ruins the experience on sensitive in-ears (and especially with quiet music).
Bottom line : it's better than a phone, (and even most MP3 players) but it is not made to drive high-end monitors.
What I would love to see, and I will try to give it a look, is the ability to use an USB DAC on this tablet. After all, it shouldn't be impossible (especially if we get another OS to run on it).
Ok. I ended up picking one of these. I have a tf101 to compare. The tf101 speakers are a lot louder (this surprise me as the tf101 is already a bit soft); with my iem (a161) the tf101 gets marginally louder (I think) but the tf700 is clearer more concise. I did not try any sort of equilizer or other widget that might adjust the sound quality. The media is very high audio. I forget the bit rate but it is excessively high track from blu-ray.

For audio via USB, you will have to wait for the Jelly Bean update as it was one of the major feature that was added to it. ICS does not support audio out via USB.
Nice! I ordered Ann Asus Xonar Essence One just ten minutes before reading this. :-D

Oh! That's a great news... but still it is a big question if my external USB dac (Arcam rDAC) will "understand" Android system... manufacturer of DAC has to release drivers for Android ...I guess???
Talking about TF700's volume level... it is far lower than most of other android/iOS devices I've heard (TF101, iPad 2, HTC desire, samsung galaxy s2...)... ...it makes me fuzzy a bit.
Yes the external speakers are the worse ever; shame on asus. Using IEM's max volume is nearly same as tf101 but mine has low impedance. Were you talking about the use of IEM/headphones or the external speaker.

WTH is wrong with Asus. Why can't they put decent speakers on a "high end" device?
I agree that the rear facing speaker is unfortunate. I certainly had issues with getting the proper sound from it and covering the speaker with my hand. I also had it completely stop working until I rebooted.
I've spent the last hour or so streaming music on a fairly slow wifi connection via Play Music and DI Radio to my LG BT headset. Overall I've found the sound quality to be an improvement from my SGS2 but I do notice the very occasional and small skip or missed note. I'm not sure if this is an issue with my wifi being slow or my headset. I guess I'll keep on eye on this over the weekend and see how the sound performance is on a different headset and jambox w/ fast wifi or locally stored music.
With other laptops that I have I use the USB connections through a Dragonfly DAC to bypass to bypass their internal DAC's which are generally not very good. The Asus sound to a decent amp is not good (no resolution or detail in the upper midrange and above using either the earphone jack or USB with the external DAC). The only answer, it seems, is to use another computer for music, which I now do.
I've been using a fifo 10 (usb dac) with my computer but to be honest since sandy bridge most dacs on computers are decent enough. As for this tablet sold it a long time ago - i have a 12 inch samsung pro but it is now dated and looking for a new 12 inch tablet but no one makes a decent one. 10 inch doesn't work for myself. Either I want 8 inch for around the house or 12 inch for travel.

[Q] MP3/FLAC Player Advice

Okay so this has quite a large back story so please bear with me. I started out with and ipod touch 4G 8gb a few years ago and the sound quality was pretty good. The reason I hated it was because the capacity was terrible i needed something that could hold everything (i mean like whole discographys). So i sold this and grabbed myself an iPod Classic 160GB. In a way i was slightly disappointed, the battery life is great, the interface is fine the capacity is great but honestly i think the 2009 sound card does take alot off in the form of sound quality, the ipod touch is significantly better in sound quality. So i then started looking in to android mp3 players as i currently have a Galaxy S4 and the quality is perfect, but i dont like the idea of using my phone for music as i dont really treat my mp3's with respect like i do my phone and battery life ect, so i was looking at the samsung galaxy 5.0 when i noticed its actually cheaper to buy a phone nowadays than a galaxy 5.0. So here i am now, what i want is:
Can play mp3 and FLAC
has a great sound card (so i can use in headphones, amps, car pioneer system)
has reasonable storage 64GBish (or micro sd slot)
pretty easy to use (can change songs whilst driving)
reasonable battery life (am around usb ports all the time so not the end of the world)
not fragile (can chuck in pockets and not have to worry about it imploding)
reasonably inexpensive im talking arounf £150 mark
please help me out with suggestions, and sorry to ramble, thanks - Harry

I have a Bose QC35, that exist a Jack 2,5mm to USB-C ?
There is always a convertor jack to use with old phones, we should welcome the new technology instead sticking with the old. It will take time to adapt though

Hopefully the adaptor will come with the phone and not be some $50 accessory lol.
Hopefully they give a decent wireless headset with the phone.

Sucks to ditch it but Type C is the way forward for better audio

You have bluetooth with your QC35, so no problem The sound remains awesome with Bose bluetooth... It's perfect on my QC30 anyway
And I don't really care if they remove the jack on the S8, i'm tired of Touchwiz (or Samsung Experience or whatever)
For those who don't know, no 3.5 jack means Sam doesn't need to put a decent DAC (or sound card as a more familiar term) into the phone. What remained is only a poor DAC that is enough to drive internal speaker. There is nothing called forward movement. It's purely cost cutting. If phone makers need to push forward wireless tech for headphones, first they have to make the transmission better with higher bit rates and no more stuttering. This way, users decide themselves if moving forward worth it or not.
Also, if headphones manufacturers decided to make type c headphone instead of 3.5, it means that each headphones must come with their own DAC instead of having just one on the phone itself. This way you cannot, ever than before, expect cheap but good headphones due to DAC cost.
Since Apple decision to ditch out headphone jack. I think it's the stupidest idea ever. The bottom line of producing sound into your ears is always in analog. No one cannot make hearable sound in digital format. I don't get it why do so many people agree with such an illusional digital shift paradigm.

You're right, but I'm not a fan of bluetooth, I always use jack because in bluetooth you have:
1. Less autonomy
2. It f * ck you brain well.
3. You can steal your helmet much easier.
It makes me laugh when I think of the guy with an iPhone 7 (DAS 1.38kg / W) with its headphones bluetooth. He nicely bites his brain ?

And if the space for headphone jack can be used for a second speaker?

why you need headphone jack

Turns out getting rid of the headphone jack is not such a great idea when it leaves you with no plan B
http://bgr.com/2016/11/07/iphone-7-plus-review-addendum-bluetooth-problems
First Samsung got rid of removable battery and they have a total Fukushima meltdown
Then Apple gets rid of headphone jack and their latest and greatest phone has unfixable Bluetooth connection issues...
Thank you LG V20
lets let those two companies play with each other in the corner while the rest of us laugh with popcorn.
Plus a lot of us enthusiasts have too many great and expensive headphones that we wont be parting ways with anytime soon.

Apple is not the first company or first phone to remove the headphone jack. Let's not forget about the slim and sexy Oppo R5. Oppo has removed the 3.5mm jack because their whole phone is thinner than 3.5mm. People don't like the idea much and R5 didn't get much of the limelight.
(Premise: I'm an audiophile and a sound engineer in the free time) Well, the only reason i could judge acceptable for mobile phone companies to get rid of the headphone Jack is to change the way sound flow is managed nowadays, to be clear;
DAC in our smartphones is the "weakest link" in the audio path, you can have a pair of 1000$ cans but you wont be able to get the right sound quality from a phone without using an extra Amp, especially for high impedance cans such as Hd500, DT880, DT990, and so on. The only reason Apple, HTC and others like LeEco, Lenovo have dropped the use of the Jack is; they don't care about sound and they don't want to include DAC in their devices anymore, anyhow most of phones use the integrated sound processing of the SoC, only a few such as HTC 10, LG v20 and other niche market phones have dedicated quality DACs. Manufacturers that get rid of the Jack think this way: "why should i provide a quality converter? Why quality headphones manufacturers can't get the responsability of digital/analog conversion?" By only providing USB-C or Lightning ports on devices, the can manufacturer will have to embed a DAC inside the headphone, so it will be his work to convert the digital signal into music, which is much more logical... Downside is, this new devices without Jack have only one plug you can use at once and yes, you have no plan B, either using BT headsets or use USB-C/Lightning headphones (but can't recharge while headpones are plugged in, bummer). Philips has already released lighting headphones that sound pretty good. It's another way to conceive audio path. It might be the future i don't know. What i DO know, is that I appreciate corded Headphones with the V20 DAC and i've been waiting for a device with this sound quality for years!

Slim and sexy doesn't even need to be a requirement for ditching the jack. The T-Mobile G1, the very first Android phone but not even the first to go without a jack, was neither sexy nor slim and it didn't have a headphone jack. I hated that dongle and preferred to just carry a dedicated mp3 player instead.
I happen to just like having something to plug a Square (or other credit card reader) into.

Apple dropping the jack really wasn't a decision based on sound equipment issues at all. It was a move to force all new iphone users onto Apple pay. Small businesses that use the credit card swipers need the headphone jack. Those systems compete with Apple pay that uses NFC to bypass the need for the credit card swipe device. With one move to eliminate the jack Apple just disrupted a huge part the mobile payments business to their benefit.
Didn't know about this thing, pretty sharp...
