Hi: I searched the forum but haven't found this issue discussed. Today my phone went completely dead. I had it with me off the charger for several hours while out for a Sunday drive. It was odd as it disconnected from the car bluetooth - I think that was due to power optimization turning things off. I still had over 90% battery. When I got home, I put the phone on the charger. An hour later, I went to use it and nothing. No screen, just dead. Holding power button did nothing. Yikes!!! I did a Google search and found discussion about this on the OnePlus forum. Apparently holding the Power button + Volume Up recovers the phone, and it worked for me. I am completely stock, no root, no bootloader unlock, latest version 9.5.9.GM21AA.
Any thoughts on why this is happening? Any insight would be appreciated.
Thanks.
Sorry to hear about your phone but it is something which is not new. It has happened to me twice in a span of three weeks and has happened to other people as well. Unfortunately no one knows the root cause of this particular problem but I am sure soon it will be identified and hopefully cured. I am rooted with twrp and running a custom rom and a few magisk modules. Sorry can't be of any more help, cheers.

There's a few threads about this had happened to quite a few people. Here's one of them.

I met the problem several time, VOLUME UP + POWER Button works. But it is really annoying.
I have this problem with 9.5.8 & Smurf kernel. But after disable mq io sched, everything is fine. I thought Oneplus fixed this issue. Hmm, they didn't.

Last night my Xoom went into sleep mode after I had looked something up as usual. When I went to use it again, it was dead. Absolutely nothing. Plugging in the power cord never showed it getting a charge. I seriously thought it was dead for sure.
Solution:
Hold power button and volume up button and system came back to life...sort of. I got the motorola logo but at the top of the screen it said something like Starting RSD Protocol 3 and just sat there. Release both buttons, did the same procedure and she roared back to life and is working fine now.
Just thought I would share that in case it happens to anyone else.
Same happened to me about a week ago; My Xoom turned off and would not come on or even start to charge when I plugged it in, I was freaking out, then I accdently hit vol up while trying power for the mill time and it turned on...
Just hold down the power button in it will do the same but just don't load in bootloader

Mine just rolled over and played dead as well. I had about 3 quarters charge, put it in sleep mode and then nothing. Holding down the power button did nothing as well. And like the OP, I had no charge indication when I plugged it in.
The volume up and power combination did bring it back to life. I want to clarify for others who encounter this that just holding the power button alone did nothing.
Sadly I had to look up the fix on my wife's iPad2.
Fortunately she was not home to see that...
Did you flash a kernel? I had the same issue with a kernel I flashed from the Ubuntu thread in the dev section. I flashed to a Tiamet kernel and it went away. Before that I flashed the stock images and then the kernel.
I think its kernel related.

Sorry. It was bad form of me to leave out the OS . Mine is a factory stock Verizon.
I had a similar issue with mine a few weeks back. Battery was at about 50%, plugged it in to charge when I went to bed and woke up and it was completely dead. It took me almost a half hour to get it to start charging again so I could power it on. I didn't do anything fancy with it, no power / vol up magic, it just suddenly decided to start charging again and would power on. I still have no clue as to what the root cause was to my problem, only happened once and no issues since.
I'm running a stock 3.1 ROM and kernel but rooted.
Same thing happened to me last night. Plugged in before bed and wouldn't power up in the morning. I freaked as my Xoom is less than a week old. Power + vol up was the only solution. Strange, but judging by this post this seems to be a trend, hopefully one that will not be a regular occurrence.
Running stock rooted rom with Tiamat kernel conservatively set to 1.2 ghz, although it seems this problem isn't confined to a particular kernel. Wifi only HMJ37 (US) model - It would be handy if everyone with problem reports with their hardware version and kernel etc so that any trends may be documented.

deceased xoom, no charge light but charger was warm as if charging, so held power button and volume UP for probably 10 secs & BADDA BING! power up as normal1:laugh:
Dear Geeks,
I need your urgent help/advice. i'm three weeks far to my wedding and have a lot of troubles to handle, of course i need this phone.
let me describe the matter i have.
My nexus s is not booting, not starting, nothing.
what i did?
Last night, power button stopped working. I have experienced this 4-5 months ago. I don't know why, the problem has been solved by itself after few days later. i did nothing at those days. the power button came back. (as to my opinion, this is happening due to software problem) Anyway, i have used the market and installed ''fix power button'' application to use volume buttons for opening the screen.
I slept and when i woke up, i saw that phone needs to be charged but i waited. there was %11 something. i tried to handle the power button, pressed many times on it, thought that it may come back again same as 4-5 months ago it happened.
I removed battery and replaced again. i tried this many times. removed, replaced, used the usb cable via AC charger and phone started but there was no result. power button still was not working.
i thought that if the battery runs out, and then, when i charge the phone, maybe this matter may be solved. (ok this was stupid idea)
phone started to charge. when i plug the usb cable, phone was booting and displaying the google and animation and later it was ok to use.
meanwhile i keep on removing battery and replacing battery while the usb cable connected. but when phone starts to boot, i removed battery and replaced again. phone was ok, it was booting. few times it was booting.
but baaaam.
it is now not starting not booting, nothing.
now, when i replace the battery, phone is getting hot, especially sim-card area. i m removing the battery and connecting the usb. same again phone is getting hot, same sim-card area again.
i have waited enough not to connect the battery or usb charging cable. but no result.
what can i do now? what are your opinions?
my opinions/guess:
-i am using 3500 mah lithium polymere battery. maybe the battery died. i m using that battery more than 1 year, around 15 months. i dont turn off wi-fi so i m charging phone everyday.
- phone crashed during booting. and now the phone is totally brick.(i dont wanna believe this, this phone can be usable, believe me i feel it i think whatever happens, this phone can be usable via software installing or rooting... of course if you dont throw it towards a wall etc.)
by the way, my phone was not rooted. no time to root these days. and of course the phone was not starting.
what is your idea? what happened phone? what should i do?
if you reply, i will be appreciated.
A big advice for people reading this, dont remove the battery when your phone is booting.
I hope someone has a solution, since I have the same probelm...
I searched everything and tried every tool in this forum, but no success...

dude, unfortunately those solutions not working on my device.
when i connect charger and i replace the battery, within seconds phone boots itself without power button. it should be this way. removing and replacing the battery helped me to start to boot.
i sense this case a bit different from that solutions.
i need to try with a different battery. my wife has nexus s also. she is very lucky she has no problems i have experienced so far. i will try with her battery.
i think there is a matter with mainboard.
by the way i forgot to say that i dropped my phone last evening. just after then phone was acting that i'm pressing long onto power button. and power button finally stopped working when i remove the battery.
i think this is happened because of dropping the phone from my belly high.
but the last thing i have done which removing the battery while the phone is booting, i wish, i should not have done. i could use it without the power button.

If you have not rooted your device, you should have you warranty, right? Take the phone back to the carrier, and tell them about your problem. o.o Sorry, I'm of no help, but you're in a horrible situation. Wanted to at least give a little help.
Same exact problem here.
2nd of August - mom's phone turned of and just would not boot or prompt at all. The modem heats up when power is turned on or connected.
Tried
The unbrickable methods (but the computer would not detect the device in any form)
A JTAG - I was able to write the recovery and bootloader - assembled the phone and it just won't boot or prompt
Need to try
Another battery to see if it solves the issue.
Removing the xOM5 resistor and converting to a development S5PC110
Tried another battery - no luck
Did the resistor removal and converted to a dev board - Unbrickable now detects the board!
trying to get the device into fastboot - will update

I had the same problem few months ago. Power button had died. While I was able to boot with remove battery and connect to charger option and I was rooted. But after a week I decided to take the phone to Samsung service center to get the power button replaced. My phone did not have warranty. Samsung took few hours to get the power button replaced and it costed me about $7. I think that's the easiest method. They did not have a stock of I9020 power button, so they fixed a I9023 power button.
Any update? I'm curious to see if you get it working. Had the same happen to my NS a few days ago and would like to see if I can get it going again so I can give it to my stepson.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using xda premium
I've given nexus s to samsung service. Actually, power button may be handled by replacing with new one, but with no hope, it will not come back when i read messages about mainboard failure. I will update news whenever it's possible.
we'll see.
I would like to hope it is kind of software matter.
Pls god give my nexus s back, i got extended 3500mah battery.
grrr....

So with the hardware mod - instead of selecting Nexus S -> I tied the Galaxy S in unbrickable - first time I've seen the screen alive! - puts the phone into download mode and I can disconnect from the usb and it stays in download mode! .. when i tried to flash odin I get a "There is no PIT partition" error -> this ofcourse is with re-partition and bootloader update UNCHECKED
When I tried Heimdall it wouldnt let me flash without a pit file. So trying Heimdall 1.1.1 - I get Failed to Access device Error: -3
Any chance some one with an i9020T can do me a huge favor? Use Heimdall 1.3.2 - download your PIT file and upload it here?
reaching for string ends out here :/

The power button had to be replaced. I shorted the connection when ever I had to press the power button during the boot sequence. That's how I fixed mine.
Hi,
i have very strange issue which i noticed right now. It seems that i can not turn on my mobile/screen. I have to say that mobile is bought less then month ago and no modifications are made like rooting or something like that. Today it worked without any problems and when i got home i left it on my desk but two hours later i wanted to check for my e mail but screen/mobile is not turning on. I checked on/off button and it's not jammed. What else can i do considering that i can not remove the battery

Charge the phone. Could be dead. Are you SURE nothing has been modified? Also, hold down the power button until you see the capacitive buttons flashing, and don't let go until they stop flashing and the phone reboots.
Battery probably died. This phone is known to lose power abruptly. It's happened to nearly everyone at some point--it will appear to have some charge left and then suddenly drop to 0%.
Just leave it plugged in for a while and see if it revives.
nothing helped from what you mentioned but it works now. When i plugged in the charger there was no sign of charging. When i pressed and hold power button also nothing happened. Then i tried to hold volume down and power button but also no reaction from the phone and then i pressed the mobile bit harder around display to check that maybe there is no loose wire and at this point mobile turned on by itself (boot screen) and after booting there was crash report. I have HTC phones for years now and such problem never occurred to me before but phone works for now :good:
thank you
Hopefully it isn't a defect, my one x has never went off on me at a random battery percentage, except for some ROMs he he
As mentioned, some people have had instances of randomly losing charge, or phone not seeming to take a charge after running the battery down. Leaving the phone on the wall charger (not USB, which takes much longer) for several hours (overnight) and then trying to power on seems to solve the problem. One guy here could not get any response (even after charging for hours) except by holding the power button while the phone was on the charger.
The issue seems completely random. So unless it persists, probably nothing to worry about.
Sorry if this has been covered, didn't see it when I did a search and found similar issues doing a google search but not the exact same one I'm having.
Sometimes when I try to restart my G3, it won't boot back up. I'd say 1 out of every 5 boots or reboots. I'll hold down the power button to restart the phone, click on restart, it will prompt me and I will click ok, then it will say it's restarting, then goes black and doesn't come back on. I have to pull the battery and usually the only way I can get it to come back is I have to hold down the power button and THEN insert the battery and then it will start booting up. Not a HUGE issue because I can take my case off in only a few seconds, but man if I had one of those huge extended battery cases that take like 10 minutes to put on and off, I'd be hatin' it
SPECS: D850, Lollipop, rooted.
Now I did not have this issue unrooted. This only happened after I rooted the phone. I used it for about 2 weeks unrooted. I'm sorry I don't recall the exact method I used to root it. So I can live with it but I'd just thought I'd ask and see if anyone has a solution or understanding why this is happening. Thanks for reading my post.
Yeah.. this is a weird issue.
Did you ever end up finding further information on this issue? I just rooted and installed TWRP yesterday and I am experiencing an identical problem. When it happens the screen is dark and power button unresponsive, in addition the LED does not light when plugged in. I can recover using one of three methods:
1: Unseat/reseat the battery once or twice (most times twice)
2: Plug into USB charger with no battery, wait for "?" screen and insert battery...then it powers up
3: Insert battery while holding down power button as you mentioned.
I rooted using this method (only method that would work) , and bump'd / installed TWRP using ImagprepGUI
i have this problem as well. Would like a permanent solution.

Unfortunately the only permanent fix at this time is to reinstall stock recovery.
Got the exact same problem on my G3. Rooted and twrp installed. Any solution yet?
I have a similar issue. Mine reboots every time, but when I power down the phone overnight and try to turn it on the next morning, I have to take out the battery to get it to respond to the power button. I have held it for a full minute waiting for it to come on with no response. This has happened twice now. Not a big issue since it only happens when powering down the phone overnight. If I power it off then turn it back on immediately, the power button works perfectly. I bought the phone already rooted, updated twrp to 2.8.7.0 and installed jedi kernel and rom.
Hello guys,
when I woke up, my S6 was just flashing blue, while I charged it.
But it won´t turn on. I tried many different ways of holding the power buttons but nothing works.
I also can´t get a connection through ADB and fastboot.
A few seconds ago, I tried to reach the phone with the Anrdroid device manager of Google, but there is also nothing. It just says, that there is no connection, and the phone was last online yesteday(min. 7h ago).
Does anyone of you know, how to fix this?
Regards,

Have you tried volume down and power button

It has no root atm and there was never a bootloop or something else.
It´s just off and it seems, that it´s pretty much broken. I tried again every button combination - nothing worked.
never mind, i just came from work, and the phone was a bit warm when I touched it. that is a bit confusing, because i thought it made no reaction.
Thread closed per OP request.
Solution: it was a manufacturing issue (some burned parts).
