Galaxy Note Series for Dummies - Samsung Galaxy Note 10 Questions & Answers

Hi all,
I'm a new initiate to the (awesome) Galaxy Note line. Jumping ship from iOS to replace the age old iPhone 6 Plus. Never owned one before except a few glorious moments with a Note8 borrowed from my mum. Going all out on Android this time around with the Note10. Just a few questions please:
+ How smooth is the data transfer from iOS to Android? What is carried over and/or left behind? I have years of messages, photos, contacts calendar items and about 30GB of music in the iPhone.
+ I read that Samsung is not particularly good with latest Android updates, so low chance of Android Q appearing at launch unlike Google Pixel 4. How long does it take normally for Samsung to offer upgrade from launch?
+ Any recommended tweaks/settings and Play store downloads I need to make immediately out of the box? I honestly felt dumb playing around the Note8 settings after years in the Apple camp
Much appreciated.

1. Note 10 supports UFS 3.0 storage standard. This storage is faster than iPhone's storage - you can expect absolute speed and smoothness. There is a bunch of apps out there but Samsung has its own utility to transfer all data.
2. So far I experienced, last two lines always gets the newest Androids really quickly. So, up to Note 12, you do not have to be scared of having an old Android.
3. I do not think you need anything to set-up. It works perfectly out of the box. Just ensure you have gmail account and you are good to go. Also, do not forget to try out Dex mode with Linux on Dex - it's a HUGE deal that iPhone really does not have (will not have at least for upcoming 2-3 years).

I stupidly changed from a Note 9 to an iPhone XS+ just because I wanted the Apple watch 4. I have regretted it every day since! The Apple watch 4 is certainly in a league of its own but it cannot compensate for the loss of my beloved Note 9. I am waiting for the Note 10 with great impatience.
You will find the two OS totally different and also the use of the S-pen makes the Note 10 a mini pocket computer, the things I could do with my Note 9 that I cannot do with the Apple is amazing. Its going to be difficult to change again but oh so worth the learning curve again. I hope I have finally learned my lesson with Apple?

The updates will be extremely slow but honestly you won't need them as the phone generally runs smoother out if the box than any pixel ever did for me. If you are looking for Android q, expect to have that update start rolling out around february. If you decide to purchase an unlocked Note, you won't get Q til april-ish. I'll also say the pen to me didn't add any functionality for me, that I needed. I do everything I want using my finger. That's why this time I went S10.

Same exact situation and frankly one of the reasons.
That said I'm simply bored (again) by Apple. I've been known to defect a few key times over the years but I get fed up with a mundane experience with Apple. Not a huge Samsung software fan but you simply can't beat the hardware.

Samsung SmartSwitch will copy a lot of things from your iPhone. You install it on the IPhone and run it on the Note. It's been several years since the last time I've done it so not 100% sure what it does and does not copy currently. It will also suggest equivalent Android apps for the ones it finds on the iPhone.
Make sure you read up on how to get signed out of iMessage or you won't be receiving any SMS messages from people on IOS.
Found this on what gets transfered. The USB method looks to be the most complete.

dummies?? huh?

Thank you all for your input. Once the phone arrives I will report impressions back here

updates for example I'm on July security patch and that was installed about 9 days ago. Really not too bad and doesn't improve your life so wouldn't worry about that.
I went to IOS - big mistake. And tried S7 and Huawei when the Note 7 was recalled. But straight back to Note 8 the day it came out! Had every note. Its the best out there. Those who've only had Oneplus/huawei etc will of course say theirs is the best until they've tried the note series.

[Q] Unbelievably torn

I recently broke my Nexus 4, unfortunate, I know. (It was like my child after sitting on this forum with many of you, waiting two months for it to arrive after launch) I made the switch to Android about a year ago, coming from a blackberry, and never thought I'd look back. I'm now faced with a bit of a predicament. With an upgrade available for me, it's feasible, as it wasn't when I purchased my Nexus, to consider buying the 5s. I love stock android, plain and simple, and I have no regrets about purchasing a substantially larger phone. I have nothing against Iphones, they just weren't for me at the time. Now, however, as me and my friends have gone off to university, Imessage (Group chat specifically) is how all of my closely knit friends stay in touch. I feel left out, to say the least. That and the Itouch on the 5s is tempting me to make the move, at least for now, to the dark side. I still can't quite move past purchasing a brand new, Nexus 5 however. The updates, screen, and operating system are all pulling me in. Granted this is an Android forum, and this may seem an odd place to be asking a question about switching the iphone, I'm still partial to Android and thought the bias may play well into my personal opinion. The last thing I want is buyers remorse. All you central members who have switched to Iphones or vice versa, what do?
Much thanks.

with the nexus 5 you should be able to go into quite a few higher Android Versions, so it will get even better and better, the iphone 5s might be great for now but it will probably only receive one or even if we are lucky a 2nd. that's apples way of saying "we are unable to get iOS 9.x running smoothly on the iPhone 5 so if you want our new stuff buy another flagship!" (no offense to old apple, most of us just hate the new apple) with android even if the nexus 5 no longer gets official updates you still have the android community to look to for newest Versions. i hope you stick true to android! i dont like most of apples products but i thought the iphone 5s was great!

New Note 5 Owner Here

Y'all are looking at the owner of a brand new Samsung Galaxy Note 5 64 GB in the black. After spending about 4 hours with it I've come to really love this phone. I am coming from spending almost 2 years of a great experience with Windows Phones and if it wasn't for "Big Red" being the only carrier that works at my family's cabin I would probably switch to AT&T to stick with a Windows phone. Unfortunately that left me with 2 choices go to an iPhone which was alright for me in the past or go to an android phone which I have had bad experiences with in the past (note 2, Droid razr m, stratosphere ). Well I chose the Note 5 to try to change my experience with android devices and so far I'm glad I did. Even though if it wasn't for me dropping my Lumia Icon 25 feet onto the ground while hanging a treestand the other day I would still be using it instead of this brand new Note 5.

Congrats! A bad experience with a Note 2 though? That was an awesome phone, it's what totally changed my perception of Samsung. It was a one smooth beast up until I got the Note 5.

It was more a bad experience with Verizon than it was the Note 2 and Verizon's refurbished department. I had an Android OS update download corrupted and bricked the phone. It was stock and unrooted. The refurbished phone they sent me then wouldn't connect to any WiFi network at all. The next refurbished phone they sent me would get so hot you couldn't touch it at all. The next one they sent then would not charge due to a bad USB port. Then on top of it every time I had to call them (Verizon ) it would turn into a 3 hour phone call with them repeatedly in the same conversation with the same person referring to me as a member of the opposite sex even after me politely correcting them. So inside of 3 weeks time I went through several phones and repeated abuse from Verizon which tainted my experience with the Note 2. I had a great 3 months with my original Note 2 until the bad update. I so far am extremely happy though with the Note 5

The Note 5 really is a splendid phone. I was really worried as this is my first Samsung phone and a lot of people complain about TouchWiz being slow and bloated. While I can see how it could be considered bloated with the amount of pre-installed apps (a fair amount which are actually useful), I have yet to see the phone perform poorly no matter what I'm doing. The camera is especially quick to load and take pictures, which is usually somewhat sluggish on most phones.
I'm more disappointed that we may never have root access than anything else, but if I had to use a phone without root it would definitely be this phone. It's the only one to really bring unique features versus just a different Android "skin" like most other Android phones. I Particularly enjoy using the S Pen for writing quick notes, and the ability to share the screen between two apps, as well as have floating apps (like the calculator) all at the same time.
I've yet to try any games, so can't comment on the GPU power, but being a flagship phone it must be fairly decent.
While there does seem to be some truth to the multitasking issue (not many apps able to run in the background) I've personally not had any issues yet. I mainly just want to be able to text/browse and listen to music like Pandora at the same time. Hopefully there is a good reason they are not keeping too many apps in the background. Maybe it is to free up space to keep the experience quick (I wouldn't be surprised if it's to allow room for things like the camera to load quickly).
Hardware wise it is a beautiful phone. My only complaint (coming from a HTC One MAX with Dual stereo speakers) is the sound is about average, worse if you're laying in bed with the bottom of the phone resting against your chest/body because it covers up the only media speaker on the phone. Personally I think the speaker would have been better suited on the top of the phone if it had to be located along the side. It feels so nice that when my case came in the mail I took it back off because it felt so horrible compared to the phone being naked. I really hate to put a case on this phone.
New note 5 owner here coming from the LG G3. Loved my G3 but loving this much more in just a few hours. Amazing device I despised samsung due to my wife's S5 but after testing and upgrading to the Note 5 my perception is far different. Glad to be here
I'm loving how many people made the jump from the Note 2 to the Note 5, like myself. It was such a great phone. I still have it sitting on my desk and considering I had unlimited data with it, I do feel a slight tinge of regret. I'm gonna miss being able to load YouTube videos or any web page or song at my heart's content. But that price hike really isn't worth it. I can deal with WiFi hunting. And man this Note 5 is a beast, I didn't think I would ever need another phone again after the Note 2, but this one is significantly better. Web browsing, general multitasking, and the pen especially. Amazing device.

Help! Need to Decide b/n Galaxy S6 or iPhone 6 in 14 hrs!

Hey Guys,
My first post here. I need to pick a phone for my work by tomorrow (I got the notice just today). The options are Galaxy S6 vs iPhone 6. I am really confused between which one to pick.
Here is my situation. I have used both Android & iOS till now. I currently use a Moto E for work. Terrible phone (but built like a TANK!). Before this, I was using iPhone 5 which I didn't mind (loved the camera). I don't know if this should factor in my decision - but I also own iPad Air (love it), Apple TV (meh so far) & Samsung TV. I do not own a Macbook (good old Windows here, HP Probook). I do not subscribe to Apple services like Apple Music or iCloud. I use Google services a lot - hangouts, gmail, maps & will also use google photos when I get the new phone.
iPhone 6 is rated incredibly highly on amazon.com whereas I have been reading about battery issues on the Galaxy S6. I would love the larger screen on GS6 but I am a bit wary of the glass back. Also, if I can't get through the day without recharging - it's a deal breaker for me (I am a moderate user). All the google apps I use are also on iOS and as I said earlier, I am not invested in Apple specific apps/services. I do not intend to root or jailbreak either phone.
I am cautiously optimistic about Now on Tap, in my heart of heart I love the material design philosophy and I am more likely to buy an Android wear watch in the future (if ever) than an apple watch. I am inclined towards Galaxy S6 (when I put things on paper) but I suppose I am looking for a validation that that the device (and by extension Marshmallow) is without significant flaws (terrible battery, hung UI, random restarts and so on). I would really appreciate if you guys can share your experiences on GS6 & Marshmallow/Android reliability.
Thanks for your time!
I am running MM Unofficial 6.01 and no lags, no battery problems, everything is butter smooth, if I had to pick I would go for GS6 bc custom rom's etc, but if your not interested in that then I would pick the iPhone 6
If you want regular updates -> iPhone
If you want better camera -> Samsung
Thanks fellow Brabantian! How difficult/easy is it to go for an unofficial MM on GS6? Does it void warranty? Sorry, I have not yet searched the forum on this topic yet...
Ram management in GS6 is terrible, while iphone is solid OS, but GS6 is killer in hardware and stupid in software( touchwiz) but i didn't test GS6 in MM so i don't know if any improvement , and GS6 has nice super charge feature which is very useful.

The S6 has no issues with battery for me, I use it from 9am to 5pm with mobile data enabled and occasional facebook/whatsapp use with 60% charge.
The camera is outstanding, but it is terrible for close range as it cannot focus.
All in all, if you want constant updates for the future, go with the iPhone, but if you want pure stability for the OS, get the S6.

Thanks for sharing your views. It's amazing that even with 3 gigs of RAM - there's still memory management issues! Do you experience slowdown or hung apps or delay in launching apps? As regards software, I anyways plan to use one of the launchers to over-ride Touchwiz - can't stand it.

Just when open fb and Twitter with couple of chrome pages, then everything in the back has to reload, so if u switch between apps then this is annoying, i don't notice hung apps but i would like to back to the app same place where i left it open , am just waiting for the iphone 7 to switch to it

I wouldn't know, but it is only where it is properly close range, probably up to 20cm away than it can focus.

the gs6 is the best overall phone right now...and especially the edge version is also the best looking one...iphone 6 is crap in comparison...battery is good enough for me with 5+ hours SOT...ram management issues are way overrated and with MM this phone flies...and since your not about custom roms then it fits perfectly your needs...you can get the upcoming s7 if you want the best

On paper the S6 is better, but nothing is more true. The hardware will never be fine tuned to the OS like Apple does it. Without root and flashing cynogenmod rom there is no fun in having an Android phone, especially no fun in having the S6.
For basic daily use like you say; mails etc. I'd just go with the iPhone 6. They receive updates way way faster. Let's say android N gets released in june 2016, it will be available for the S6 in march 2017. with the iPhone 6 you will have the newest iOS for the next 6 years (seeing that the iPhone 4s got iOS 9), something you can't expect from any android device.
Also stock S6 without apps like Powernap, Amplify, Disable services and Greenify will give you really terrible idle battery drain. This battery drain is only worse in the android M update, even when it has Doze. This will be better with later updates, but expect these updates to take 2 months atleast.
Seeing that you didn't enjoy the iPhone 5 it wouldn't really make sense to even get an iPhone 6, since the iOS is the same, but it's packed with better hardware and a bigger screen. If it was the hardware you didn't like, then maybe the 6 is an upgrade but if it's the software you can't stad (like me) then just don't get the iPhone, especially not if you won't jailbreak it.
Ram management is overhyped and shouldn't be looked at. Android M has amazing performance, it's butter smooth compared to what we have on Lollipop now.
Conclusion: get a dfferent android device than the galaxy s6, for example the Z5 premium is nice.
If you want 1 button --> iphone
If you want anything that makes sense --> any other phone except iPhone
I'm running the s6 edge on 6.01 and yes it's smooth. But truth be honest. Battery is just as bad on 6.01 as on 5.11.
I had the iPhone 6 plus before and I honestly regret getting the s6 edge insted of it.
If I had to pick now knowing what I know about both I would stay on the iPhone 6 plus.
I've had enough of Samsung and Android bad optimization and I've had htc one before and so on.
I will change to iPhone 7 this summer myself. But like I said. If I had to choose right now. I would pick the iPhone 6
Sendt fra min SM-G925F med Tapatalk
I've never had a problem making it comfortable through the day with moderate use, either before on Lollipop or now on Marshmallow beta. Stock, no root, greenify or anything of the sort. Then again, I don't use facebook, twitter or any other crappy social media battery leeches.
I'd never trade my S6 for an iPhone, that's for sure. I find the hardware ugly and overpriced, and the software too restrictive and boring for my liking. A matter of taste, admittedly.
I have both. I use iphone 6 for work email and calendar coz of optimised sync through airwatch , for everything else I always reach out to my SGS6 128GB. SGS 6 is definitely a better entertainment machine and screen size / resolution is awesome compared to IPHONE 6 (DON'T believe apple hype on retina display and human eye cannot see beyond retina..b***s***t) side by side there is a very clear difference and iphone 6 display is no match for GS6. And battery for both is almost similar. I'm a heavy user & both will last a day only. Will need recharge every night.

Camera is much much better on GS6
You won't be disappointed with either or. But having said that:
If you're a very picky perfectionist, go for the iphone 6.
If you transfer files/media on the go frequently, galaxy s6.

Are you guys still feeling samsung? (Snapdragon users)

I'm not sure if I'd like to continue using Samsung, now that the snapdragon versions can't be bootloader unlocked anymore.
I find it extremely frustrating not being able to downgrade my OS from bad updates.
I'm also very frustrated not to be able to do full nandroid backups (including EFS).
Not having any custom roms is also very disappointing.
If exynos didn't have such bad idle battery life, I'd use exynos.
At this point, I think the only thing I'm attracted to on the samsung devices is the color from their amoled.
Good or bad, I'd like to hear you snapdragon users give your opinion on how happy you are with the current samsung snapdragon devices, what would be your ideal alternative device to samsung? And why?
Also, let me know if you're a generic user or hardcore enthusiast.
I've had a Note since the Note 4...which was an absolutely amazing device in my opinion. Most of the stuff I own are Samsung products...except for my laptop. They have quality products...but every year I find it harder to justify the price tag...considering all the competition there is now...amazing devices for much less. I currently have the Note 10 now but I don't really think I'll upgrade to the next one next year. Especially with how far OnePlus devices have come among other devices. Maybe the next Pixel will be worth the upgrade. I used to root, custom roms and all that as well. But, for me it's mostly the price tag that's turning me away from Samsung.
Back in the day of ****ty OEM skins, I was a crack flasher and used TWRP & TiBU almost daily. But Samsung One UI has come a long way since Touchwiz. I actually enjoy using the stock ROM and don't feel the need to immediately wipe it with something else. It already offers 95% of what I'd fix with a custom ROM. I honestly don't miss wiping it and starting all over with each new version of a custom ROM. All of my important files are stored in the cloud or email, and I don't use any apks that are unavailable outside of the Play Store, apk mirror or other web sites, so no need to backup those. I use Adguard which does a great job, so no need to root just for adblocking. I use CCSWE App Manager to disable bloatware that I will never use. My Note 10 battery lasts all day every day, so no need to flash tweaks/mods to eek out more juice. Overall, I really have no need to root anymore. But if I absolutely *had* to root my phone today, I'd probably go with something from OnePlus. I had a P2XL which was a great phone for its time, but the new Pixels are just meh imo. Their camera system is the only thing that sets them apart. The rest of the phone is underwhelming and overpriced for what you get.
Yeah Samsung screens are amazing, and so is there hardware. Example i was trying to WI-FI Direct Joker to my mates Huawei P20 or something can't really remember exact model around 7/8 mins in it was around 40% ish percent i had a phone call i had to run, so i came back 20 mins later used WI-FI direct again we must have got up to 60% this was well over ten mins he had to shoot see what I’m trying to say yeah Huawei, Apple and all the other manufactures are good,
But you can’t beat Samsung hardware. i WI-FI directed the joker it's 2.4 gig file size from my Tab S SM-T705 LTE which is 5 years old to my Note 9 in under 3 mins also my Tab S 8.4 picks up most Wi-Fi hotspots i work in a car park i have tried few year old iPhone and Huawei witch is last year’s model its co-workers phone they pick up eff all i would have to go out of the car park to pick up the hotspots while my Samsung Tab S from 2014 picks up all the free Wi-Fi networks Apple Huawei use trash hardware Samsung hardware Rocks!
People think yeah I’m paying half of what Samsung is charging but when it comes to little things that actually matter in real world usage that's where Samsung is leaps ahead of the competition.
Samsung Snapdragon bootloaders have been locked for years. I used the Note 8 as my primary device for 2 years, and have been using the Note 10+ since release date. The battery life just keeps getting better. I haven't had a reason to root since the Note 4. Android updates don't seem to change much in recent years, they mainly just make the overall system smoother. I've never felt like a previous version was better than the recent update. Overall, I'd rather give Samsung my money to keep making quality products with premium hardware. I also use Dex daily with my Surface Pro.

Is Samsung Dumbing Down Phone Performance to Convince You to Upgrade?

I think Samsung is playing an intentional game to convince customers to upgrade their mobile devices. After I'd updated to Android 9.0 on my Note 8 roughly 2 years ago, everything went to hell. The camera looks like ****. The camera was the BEST at the time but suddenly it lost all of it's image quality overnight. The touch screen is now delayed. The keyboard is super difficult to type on without making a mistake.
It doesn't matter if I wipe it clean and use developers tools to remove bloatware. It still acts the exact same way regardless. Apple played this game awhile back to get users to purchase the latest iPhone. After some research, this exact same thing has happened with owners of the Galaxy S7 as well as the Note 10. And probably other Samsung phone models.
There are hundreds of complaints that I'd seen in a matter of minutes in a simple Google search. What is your opinion on this? It really frustrates me because I had dumped nearly $1,000 in this thing. Should there be a class action lawsuit to stop this from happening in the future? Should there be a bill introduced to the legislature? $1,000 is a lot for a little device with tiny circuit boards that probably had cost $6 to manufacture somewhere in Asia.
