I'm looking for a method to keep my phone unlocked (similar to SmartLock) when it is connected to an authorized USB. Or even to disable the keyboard.
When developing it is tedious to have to continually unlock my phone after making a code change and installing the app
Is "Developer options > Stay awake" sufficient? It doesn't have any concept of "authorized USB", but it keeps the phone awake while it's plugged in, which seems like it would address your frustration.

Good to know. I ended up plugging the charger to the wall and did it that way today, because of this.
Although I just looked through settings, and can't find it. Must be buried somewhere.
Helpful Help
Hey there...to better help you with this problem (as I had the exact same problem and it really pissed me off):
1. Go to "Settings"
2. Go to "Applications"
3. Got to "USB Settings"
4. Select "Ask on Connection"
I have no idea what "Samsung Kies" does other than drive a person crazy...anyone out there know what that does?
I have a feeling AT&T are gonna get calls about this...
I just got my Mesmerize yesterday and rooted it today with the superoneclick app. Using their instructions it said to turn on "debug" mode in the settings>application>developer menu. I did that, but now that area is greyed out and I cannot change that option. How can I disable this? I read I should disable that asap once I've done what I wanted to do via the root tool.
Also, I would like to be able to tether my phone when I go on vacation so we can watch netflix on my ipad. Of course I don't have that "paid for" on my acct, but was told this was able to be done after rooting my phone, per my "buddies" sage advice lol.
Also, with all of the choices of custom roms, which ones are the best for a newer user. IE no FUBAR or bricks. I like fast and easy to use
thx guys
I'm trying to read up on alot of this, but it's foreign to me. Although I loved to overclock computers back in the day, I never got into linux or for that matter really software at all .
Unplug the USB cable and it should let you disable debugging. If that doesnt do it try changing the default action under settings/usb first.
sorry when unplugged it is greyed out
I have usb setting set to "ask on connection"
if I select mass storage there is no USB debuggin, if I set to samsung Kies it enables debugging. I cannot alter the option in any of these menus, plugged or unplugged from USB.
Tried powering off/on phone. No change. Tried removing SD card, no change.
on to the next problem
I tried following directions for installing CWMod via moving the update.zip over to the root of my sdcard. Problem is when I reboot phone into developer screen, it's blue(should be green?) and if I select update.zip it errors out with e: signature validation failed.
If i run the rom flash from the cw mod app, it appears to get farther but then does again error out at
e: failed to verify whole-file signature and
e: signature verification failed
You may run into issues with Superuser with USB Debugging disabled. Just leave it enabled. I don't know where you read the urgency to disable USB debugging but they were wrong.
And what's wrong with paying for a tethering app?

I think he just means the paid service from the carrier. Don't be quite so quick to judge or take offense.

What the hell are you blabbering about? I was simply asking the guy to clarify what he meant, because I wasn't sure of exactly what he was saying. How the hell is that judging him? Much less taking offense?
I apparently mistook the tone of your post; I've noted you tend to choose rather strong words for an internet forum, and it's tricky not to come off a bit forceful to some people. That in mind, that's how I ended up taking the post in question. My mistake, carry on.
Hahaha fair enough!
After upgrading to 4.3 on my i535 GS3, I'm now faced with a very annoying new problem. I use easytether pro to tether to my macbook, and now when I plug in the usb it pops up with "Allow USB Debugging?" followed by my computer's RSA key fingerprint, and then a checkbox for "Always allow from this computer".
It doesn't matter if I check the "always allow" because the next time I plug it in, it pops up with the same message again. For some reason it's not recognizing my computer, even though the RSA key fingerprint is exactly the same every time. Even worse, I have to go through this process twice every single time I plug in my usb - once for the usb connected as an installer, and twice when it switches from installer to media device.
I use tethering quite a bit, so this is kind of grinding my gears! Does anybody know what might be going on here? Is it possibly just a mac thing? Perhaps something wrong with my settings?
Try this, In developer options ->root access - allow apps and adb also USB debugging notify is unchecked.

I don't seem to have any "root access" options in my developer options. Is it hidden or something?
Sorry I must be half sleeping and thinking about custom ROM. You don't have that option, anyway do you still have the messag after untick the notify option?

You mean leave the "Always allow from this computer" unticked? I've tried both ways...it always comes back. It wouldn't be a big deal if it wasn't for the face that the connection is blocked until I hit the ok button, twice around.
Still having the issue. It's starting to grind my gears...
I nobody else having this issue?

I just started having this issue and am investigating it. If I had to guess, I'd say the rsa key store is corrupt, but I'm just guessing. It was working fine this morning, and this afternoon it started yelling at me repeatedly.
I'm going to grab a logcat then will post back if/how I fixed it.
EDIT: turns out my issue was a bad USB cable. well, a bad USB cable connection. unplugged and reseated the cable and it seems to be working now.
I am also having this issue with two devices out of three I tried.
Samsung Note 10.1 (SM-P600) running Android 4.3 and ASUS K011 (ME181CX) running Android 4.4.2 always asks for permission. I tried everything including using different cables, different usb slots, different adb.exe. Even tried rooting K011, but no luck.
However, I am not having this issue with Sony Ericsson Xperia Arc (LT15i) running 4.0.4.
Edit: I came here from Google and now noticed that this is Galaxy S III section, but I think the reason to this issue and the solution will be the same. I will post the solution to here if I can do it.

Yeah, solved it. I first killed adb.exe then simply deleted the folder C:\Users\Username\.android. After that I plugged my device in and typed "adb devices". This changed the RSA key etc. It asked for the permission again and "Always allow" option worked this time.
This method worked on both ASUS and Samsung. Hope this works for you too.
Note: I recommend you backup that folder before deleting it. Or just move it into another folder.
Mac computer
I'm having this issue with easy tether 1.1.12 in a mac (currently running OS X Yosemite 10.10.3) the windows keeps showing everytime I plug the device. Does anyone experience this on a mac computer?
In a windows 7 PC it works perfectly, no messages at all after clicking the "remember" box.
Like many others, I have become a victim of 'Too many pattern tries' and have got stuck at the lock screen trying to sign in without data connection or wi-fi. Is there any way to get past this without data rewipe. It's really stupid of Google to have a security mechanism that forces you to wipe your data, meaning anyone can just pick up your phone and spam the pattern till it goes to the email screen (which is what happened in my case).
I have a rooted phone with an unlocked bootloader and USB debugging enabled and I also have downloaded Eclipse Android SDK but have no idea how to use it. It would be nice if someone gave me step-wise instructions on switching on my wi-fi through the SDK so that I can connect over the internet and log in.
Of course, any other legit method is also fine, but the 'home button method' doesn't work for my phone (you know, keep pressing the home button). I have tried getting APKs that will help me bypass the lock screen but they dont work.

Android Device Manager is not able to pinpoint the location of my phone. Do I need wi-fi for this? The only options I see right now for my phone are to change the name, give it a ring or lock or erase.
I have finally found a way. No root or USB debugging required.

thanks for sharing
So, something very weird started happening to my phone. Out of nowhere, about 7 hours ago, it would stop charging whenever it was on, charging only when it was off and connected to my laptop. However, I thought it was just something wrong in the dev options, and I went to change whatever was the USB option to "charge phone". With this, I did accidentally forgot to activate the OEM option, and had to reboot not long after. You can probably see where this is going now.
Now I have a phone that bootloops on the FAP Lock message, and whenever I go to download mode to fix it, my PC just doesn't recognize the Phone. I've tried different USB cables, all of them are only recognized when the phone is shut down. So it isn't a hardware problem, because the Phone actually charges when it's shut down, and it isn't a problem with my USB ports or cables, as anything else I use with it works fine. And the worst part is, I need this phone today for a serious bank matter, and I can't afford to lose any data on it either, there's some very personal important stuff from yesterday that wasn't backed up yet. And keep in mind that paying for it to be fixed is the last option for me, as I can't afford it (besides, I fear they might end up getting the phone in factory reset mode, and I can't lose that data as I said).
Any kind of suggestions on how to get either the PC to recognize the phone, or flashing in a different way that doesn't need the PC to recognize the device? Thanks in advance.
Edit: Whenever I try to connect the phone via USB, it doesn't even make the Windows "USB connected" sound, it's just like it isn't there at all. One time, I got it to show, but it was as a "unrecognized usb device", and I haven't been able to replicate it yet.
