Does Exynos = no custom ROMs?

Is there any hope for custom ROMs with Exynos chipsets? Or is it that that actually means the death of the custom ROM industry for Samsung phones?

There are some roms for the Note 4 Exynos. So don't give up the hope for the S6.

Lol don't believe of what you read on other blog or forum written by users that absolute don't know the truth.
Exynos absolutely doesn't mean the end of custom ROM.
Give a look on S3 (it's exynos) forum. Only in first page there are about 20 Roms and this for 37 pages.
20x37= 740. And this without the original development section. Is that enough for you?
The disadvantage about using Exynos instead of Snapdragon about modding is only one: AOSP ROM (google stock based). This not mean you'll not see any google pure ROM on S6; but means that they will be more unstable and with more bug due to missing source of the CPU. No other. If devs are really "powerful" they could make a better Aosp rom for a Exynos than a Snapdragon device.And for me, buy an S6 to install only Cyanogen or a ROM like that it's a suicide.
A part of this there is no other problem.
Be happy and don't worry about modding ^^

My favorite Android phone was the Note 2 and it was Exynos powered and still has a ton of roms, aosp and stock.

Yes it's dead end... If you goto Note4 original Dev section... Rayman is still trying to boot cm12....
And me on nexus 5 can run any freaking thing... Had Ubuntu running without bugs a couple of week back.... So HTC one m9 it is

As a galaxy s4 user (i9500 - Exynos powered) I can tell you that all AOSP roms are a mess. The devs need to work extra hard and there are still plenty of small (and until recently - big) bugs present.
About a few months after purchasing this device I strongly regretted it due to TW lags and inability to change to AOSP roms, and promised myself I will never buy another Exynos powered device.

The Exynos will mean that custom ROMS are very hard to get done right on the S6. The sheer audience base though might make the developers try, but I don't think it's going to get any better than the previous Galaxy S phones.
The only way that is going to change is if Samsung opens up their information around the Exynos or if perhaps we get a Nexus version (kind of like the Nexus S and what it did for the Galaxy S i9000 variants).

Exynos = closed source
closed source = no developer interest
S6 = locked bootloader
Exynos + Locked Bootloader = double whammy
Exynos + Locked Bootloader + small non-removable battery = Disposable device with 2 year max lifespan & low re-sale value

Bugs on custom roms?? really?! thats the excuse? custom roms, specially aosp ones are full of bugs and random reboots here and there, they are by no means perfect. I'm sure the S6 will have dedicated developers just like the exynos S3 does. No worries

Then why you guys buying the S6 and not the snapdragon S5 901F?
This makes no sense, CM support the S4 exynos but not the 901F snapdragon? all because of userbase?

I have a snapdragon powered S4 and I have no random reboots or any bugs with an AOSP rom. So yeah, it does help to have a snapdragon vs an exynos which is still giving developers problems with AOSP roms.

Love how "custom rom" immediately = AOSP in most people's eyes.

Well, it is more-or-less the holy grail for custom roms. If you get that working for a phone you can do a lot of customization done.
I want the latest android version whenever it is possible. Waiting for an OEM to release it can take a long time. Also I don't like the custom skin over android by a lot of OEM's. I hate touchwiz for example so I flashed AOSP and used another launcher.

I think if the chip is made by the phone's company, it is most likely to get a very low support. I mean, there is a load of ROMs for my Xperia P, but every single one which is not based on a stock ROM has some kind of bug (no BT working, no NFC, no FM radio, and that goes for all).

It means the end (practically) of stable AOSP roms - roms based on the source code of Android released by Google.
That is a very significant drawback for many users.

These are generally modified or modded stock roms i.e. roms created by modifying the binary files that comprise the manufacturer's stock roms. At best, they are poor cousins of true AOSP custom roms due to lack of source files. Look up the FPBug and emmc brickbug fiascos to see how limited these modded roms are. One needs source-based roms to be able to effect real change.

It doesn't matter how "powerful" a developer is.....no developer(s) can create a stable, bug-free AOSP rom for Exynos platforms without technical information and assistance that Samsung is intentionally witholding (and has been since the Galaxy S2/Note2 days).
If you care about AOSP roms for your device, the general advice is to avoid the Exynos platform for now.

Why would anyone care for anything but AOSP ROMs? A real ROM is an AOSP-based one. All the others are just frills and laces. At best.

Completely wrong. If a real ROM is only an Aosp then buy a Nexus. No need to but a Samsung to install only an empty ROM.

Believe you me, I would buy a Nexus today. Unfortunately, Nexus 5 is yesterday's news, and the next Nexus is expected in early fall at best. Not much choice for someone who needs a phone with good hardware before summer. Otherwise, if Samsung and the carriers guarantee the newest Android in no longer than one week from publication by Google, I'd be very much open to non-AOSP-supporting handsets. That, however, ain't gonna happen.

And what is the point on having latest Android in one week more than google? I may understand only if you're a developer, that you need to develop on latest build everytime otherwhise there's no need on having immediately latest version of Android.

I have a spare Razer Phone I want to donate to a developer in order to boost development for this device, since Razer released Treble for it the device got my attention, but it could use a bit more development.

Official TWRP available
Treble available
Kernel source available
Oreo developer preview available
No custom ROMs ATM, Treble ROMs have broken critical features such as in call audio and possibly more.
I'm shipping the device for FREE to anyone who:
Is a recognised developer here on XDA
Guarantees they will use the device for development (at least try) and not just sell it on eBay
Is located in the EU, because customs, exceptions possible for really great developers.

Im part of LOS team (Currently maintaining hero family of devices (s7 and s7 edge exynos) ) Im doing a bringup of them for oreo Fixed almost all of the bugs expect for GPS after that things can go official for them so ill have to find something to play with anyway, I have experience with AOSP build system so i could at least try to get builds for Razer Phone before any mainstream roms are ready for compiling. I would also probably try to get some fun stuff to work on phone like Kali Linux NetHunter and well i would like to play with treble supported device and razer phone looks as a nice candidate as i could get some rest from exynos

Well in a nutshell, I'm the lead developer for Invictrix and previously DesolationROM. I was the first person to bring nougat to the note 4, my Werewolf kernel for the LG V20, the Nexus 5, the Nexus 7 2013, the Samsung Galaxy Note 4, and the Essential PH-1. I was also one of the early members of Substratum. Also I was the person who reverse engineered the pixel navbar to work on custom roms.

I'd also probably try to get some hardware features to work on GSIs (like porting stock camera if that's relevant, and see what can be done with the 120Hz screen)
But I won't dive too deep, like I won't do any kernel work.
For my overall Treble testing, I think it will definitely be a great device, since I'm lacking an A/B and a Qualcomm test device, which seem to have few specificities.
Fwiw, I've reported some issues to Essential (they even answered once! https://github.com/phhusson/platfor...23ea40b255dfbba5813c29#commitcomment-28321661 ), and I plan to do this as well for Razer, since it looks like their Treble implementation isn't totally ok (though I think it passes Google certification)

Why there are no custom projects for our device?

Although the kernel source is available, there aren't any projects, custom roms/kernels, no miui modifications and barely working custom recovery.. I get it the device is new but so are other devices that have so much projects... But why is our device so empty? I bet it has a huge potential for custom teams..

Xiaomi isn't interested in actively supporting independent ROM development for their devices. The reason there is a lot of development for One Plus phones is that One Plus sends free phones to developers. Xiaomi does not do that and wants its customers to use the stock ROM. Official LOS is supposedly in development for the Mix 2S but if you need custom ROMs you bought the wrong phone. In the future you should probably see what the development thread looks like before buying.

What about other Xiaomi devices? They have custom support.

Well the custom recovery is actually working pretty good. You can use the treble roms, rr is daily driver ready... Currently there are people working on aosp for our device, when we have a working aosp other roms will follow based on it

If you look into how many devices were sold, you'll figure out why so little development.

I can see that, but it's definitely surprising how few official developer ROMs (zero) have been released since this phone has been in existence. I know it's been stated that developers are working on it, but I haven't seen anything.

The camera is the constraining factor. No point having a good custom ROM if there is no GCam or MIUI camera port because you could have got a much cheaper phone if you don't care about camera.
I really regret buying this buggy device. Last time I buy something that doesn't run stock Android out of the box.

What cheaper phone could you get with the same performance as 845?
MIUI port already exist, yes for other devices, but it can be made for 2S with a finger snap. Devs just don't have interest in this device, sadly..

I do not care about processor. I just wanted full-screen with no notch and a good camera.

Currently I have this device as my main option for upgrading my smartphone, but I'm looking for a phone which I can install 3rd party ROMs such as Lineage OS or Pixel Experience to prolong it's life.
For now this phone is selling a lot and looks promising when it comes having a good dev community.
Is this one a good choice or do you have any recommendations?

Probably not since its only for china/india. Also the main selling point of the phone, the camera, isnt as good as you might think. So just buy a Pocco, or wait a little more and see if they release new phones (Pocco2/Mi A3).

Most of the custom roms are being ported to other devices by Indian devs. So yes, there will be good dev support for this phone.

Yes, it already has pretty good custom rom support.
Both Pixel Experience and LineageOS have already been ported and made available on the RN7P, as well as a few others like crDroid and Havoc OS.
Personally I'm using crDroid as I was told it's a LineageOS based rom but with more customization options added in, and while I'm still tinkering around with it, there's definitely a lot of options.
It's also officially been ported and maintained, if that makes much of a difference compared to LineageOS being an unofficial port last time I checked.

Introducing GSI - google kills android development

I was thinking, 2 years I own Galaxy A7 and still no usable AOSP for my phone...
Cant find any GSI with working features.

Yes there is not volte and bluetooth call bugless rom

GSIs are not harming Android development, in fact, they're helping it. Many custom ROMS these days start out as basically GSIs but then add device-specific customizations. Devices that would otherwise never get any custom ROM support can at least have a chance at AOSP with a GSI.

Ye, ur right... chance to boot GSI and find bunch of on working featuress, nothing else... there is no daily driver GSI as I ususally run on my phones before A7...

I have an idea - instead of only pointing non-working features and, at the same time, having some expectations regarding roms, try to fix those, simply follow the logs and search for solutions. As it was mentioned, treblized devices usually boot any GSI, kernel side is secured on A750x by @prashantp01. Volte and bluetooth are not impossible to fix, neither deal breakers for most users.
Concluding my arrogant post - typical for Samsung custom development communities DEMAND attitude without any EFFORTS, expectations to turn midrange devices into flagships with just software, focus on what is bugged (mostly minor things, used 0,01% of time)... All leads to 'death of development' for devices like A7 2018, which has fairly A HUGE potential, for example proved by @corsicanu in A5/A7 2017 or @ananjaser1211 amazing work for J series.
Don't threat it personal, it is more general statement.

Infact its quite the opposite, The availability of GSIs can give phones such as these a much higher chance to use AOSP ROMs compared to before, were you would have to wait until someone decides to make one (and most of the time it would be one or two people at best) when it comes to low/mid range samsung devices.
While on GSIs there are many contributors working day and night to bring support for as many devices as possible. even when a GSi is not going to be "100% stable" (lets be real nothing is) . it still is better than having no other options at all.
Android Pie and even Android Q GSIs are significantly more stable and im sure you will find one that works if you need AOSP ROMs.. However if you are looking for "samsung" features and bugless ROMs, you will only use Stock, thats what happens when you get a device with very little dev base

Thanx for your elaboration I need AOSP, pure, without any trace of Google and Samsung but unfortunately there is no working GSI, signal bars not work, sections of settings hung-up, a looot of FC's without install any app...
In fact I must agree with you, there was 1 or 2 developers per device and images runs without major issues, now we got ??? (bunch) of developers and no developers own actual device so there is no hope for fix, writing issues with logs without any answer or help.
