i have a question currently i am on tmo post paid acct with no hotspot plan. with unlocked xperia zl (non tmo phone) i am able to use hotspot on stock android. i dont get any message that i need to upgrade plan in order to use hotspot feature. however when same SIM card is inserted into n5 when i use hotspot i get a message to upgrade plan to hotspot in order to use the feature.
my question is my xperia zl is able to bypass carrier restriction whereas n5 is not able to? both are unlocked and unrooted phone.
i know i can root or install 3rd party apps on n5 to achieve hotspot feature. i just want to understand how xperia is managing to by pass on stock rom.

What plan are you on? I keep hearing everyone having this issue, but I can tether freely with my n5. I'm stock unrooted with an unlocked bootloader. I have the new simple choice plan that includes tethering.
But to answer your question, Google has put a restriction in the stock rom, whereas Sony hasn't.

i am on biz classic unlimited plan which does not include hotspot need to pay separately. i have a feeling that google might have given imei info to the telco even though it is unlocked. whereas in case of xperia zl they may not have give imei no hence they are unable to block.
is it possible to identify correct model of your n5 is it american model (d820) or international model (d821)

If you're asking me what model I have its the d280. You can check by going into the bootloader. It will say the model number there.
i am also on d820 so basically both of our models are same. may i know what plan you are on?

Just call T-Mobile and update your plan to one that includes hotspot. The current version of your plan costs the same but enables hotspot. I was in the same situation.

Same issue here,
I finally have time to test this yesterday and tried to browse from a tablet. I was presented with a T-Mobile page to register my phone number. This is not the case on Galaxy S4 running Google Edition rom.
I can't wait until the developers find a way to bypass the restrictions

I recently purchased a used LG G4 (H810 - AT&T version). I couldn't pass up the $180 price. I am on Straight Talk in the USA with an AT&T SIM. My previous phones have been nexus devices or unlocked non-carrier models. I have always been able to use the built-in Android wi-fi tethering. I don't use a lot of data, but I do need to tether occasionally. This is my first carrier-branded device on Straight Talk. Being an AT&T phone, they do everything they can to block tethering. I have tried countless apps on the phone, along with ones that do a USB tether with a PC. (ClockworkMod Tether, PDANET) I have not been able to get anything to work. This particular model is NOT ROOTABLE. Have I made a mistake buying this phone? Do I need to get an international unlocked edition if I want to do wi-fi tethering? I really like the phone and the camera is great, but not being able to tether is very dangerous in my profession as I am on-call 24/7.
Hi guys! I'm thinking about buying a Verizon note 5 and bring it to Mexico with me, I don't really care about root stuff but I do care about the wifi hotspot. I've read around here that foxfi app works for Verizon note 5 even after the MM update .
So my question is if the Verizon Note 5 wifi hotspot with foxfi would work with a different carrier either in the us or overseas, has anyone tried to do that with a different carrier? Thank you!!
Anyone please ?
Hi, I'm thinking about picking up a SIM-unlocked T-Mobile S7 (930T) or maybe a T-Mobile S7 Edge (935T) to run on Cricket, but I want to make sure that the phone doesn't check with the carrier before allowing hotspot (hotspot tether provisioning).
For example, I'm pretty sure the Verizon version allows hotspot to be used without pinging whatever carrier's SIM one has installed (Cricket) because that's the way it worked on my Verizon branded S6. With my Cricket SIM in it, I could still run a hotspot without the phone checking for permission with my carrier as it does with some phones like the iPhone and S7 930A. On those two phones I can't do hotspot because it checks with the carrier before allowing hotspot tethering and I don't have hotspot on my plan. I don't do hotspot that often but it's nice to have it there when I need it.
The only reason I'm not looking at a Verizon version of the S7 is because the bands I would need to run well on Cricket are switched off on the 930V.
Let me know if you know whether the T-mobile S7s allow use of the hotspot tether function without pinging the carrier for permission.
Thanks in advance for any help you can provide.

I have T-mobile s7, and I am in Italy, with an itlaian provider and hotspot is working just fine.
I think that if your phone is SIM ulocked (like mine) you can use hotspot without problem.
hope it can help
Okay to be clear I know an unlocked T-Mobile phone will work on the Verizon network my question is if I use a Verizon sim card in a T-Mobile phone will I be able to use the tethering or mobile hotspot feature without it popping up I need to get a subscription from Verizon that has happened in the past with carrier specific phones it does not happen when you get a completely unlocked phone from Samsung so that is my question will I be able to use the mobile hotspot without it popping up I need to subscribe from Verizon so if you have that information I would love to hear it thank you
I guess you'll have to try it and see what happens. If it doesn't work, there are usually workaround tricks
