Which Google or Android system app is AFWall+ firewall blocking Gmail mms attachments - General Questions and Answers

I rooted my Samsung Galaxy Go5 running Android 6.0.1 to be able to install the AFWall+ firewall app last year. But I've just started using the Gmail app as an email client, and have run into a problem. While Gmail would send and receive text messages successfully, it refused to send email with an attached photo.
I finally had success by updating the app and freeing up 1 GB in the phone's tiny 8 GB memory. But it only works with the AFWall+ firewall disabled. I've whitelisted all three options for Gmail, LAN, wifi and file transfers, but Gmail still refuses to send any attachment when enabled.
Would anyone know which Google related apps or basic system apps I might try enabling in the firewall to troubleshoot that may be causing this? Gmail is the only app I've whitelisted out of over a dozen in the firewall that I've experienced any problems with.
Kind thanks for any feedback on this.

[Q] GMAIL Password ?

I've had a GMail account for years, and never once had a problem. I recently got an Android phone, and started getting GMail delivery failures for emails about "acai berry" slimming, which obviously is spam I didnt send. As a developer, I can understand that servers can be hacked, and nothing is perfect.
Earlier in the week I couldn't check my GMail email from my Android phone. I then logged in from my PC & was told there was suspicious activity. I got an access code sent by SMS & reset my password. I then checked the suspicious activity & found 2 accesses to my account from Poland. Definately not me. I still thought someone had hacked the server.
But last night alarm bells started ringing. I was running some API example code in Eclipse through the debugger on the emulator, and saw in the LogCat window some messages about permissions being requested by the app. One of them being requested was "ACCESS_GMAIL_PASSWORD" (may not have been the exact wording - I forgot to make a note of it) but it definately said GMAIL & PASSWORD in the permission name.
Now it was only in the Emulator, which didnt have any personal info in it. But when installing apps from the Marketplace on my real phone, I always check the permissions very carefully & wouldnt have installed anything that requested my GMail password. I cant believe Google would have provided API methods to access my GMail password ? Is this right ? Is it possible for an app to do so without me knowing it has permission to do so ? If its possible, I may have to reconsider using GMail.
Thanks for any feedback.
Well some apps do actually require the Google login credentials. Like appbrain for example. And I've been using appvrain forever with no problem.

Yeah, but shouldn't we be aware of these permissions when we are installing. I know I haven't installed any apps that explicitly said they would access my GMail account.
Well I've checked for the following applications I've got on my phone and that use Gmail password:
- Android Market
- Chrome to Phone
- Gmail
- Google Reader
- GTasks
- Google Maps
and for all of them in the Authorisations list it is clearly written "Use an account authentification information" (I've translated from what I read in French so it may not be the exact wording in English).
So IMO if you use at least Android Market and Gmail application you have inevitably given access to your Gmail password.
On that list I have
- Android Market
- GMail
- Google Maps
All were pre-installed on the phone. Also, I trust the authors of these pieces of software. The problem is my GMail account has been accessed by a spammer sending "Acai berry" slimming emails. I dont think Google would misuse my GMail password for this purpose.
I am more concerned that I have been downloading apps from the Marketplace & one of them got my GMail password. I realise that apps have "Full internet access" when they are ad sponsored, I suspect a rogue app accessed my GMail password & then used its internet access to send the password to a spammer.
I have several apps from sources I dont fully trust, with "Full Internet Access". But I dont have any that asked for Account Authorisation when installed.
Is there any way I can recheck what apps can access my GMail password ?
Thanks.
There is an app on the market called task identifier that should help you out.

Looks exactly what I'm after. Thanks.

[Q] Mail app - new emails won't download

I have my business email (@ my own server) set up in the Mail app and it's been working perfectly for months, but just yesterday it suddenly stopped downloading new emails. I redid all the incoming/outgoing settings and the app says "verifying account settings ..." and it was able to verify that they were correct. I also know they're correct because they've been working fine and I didn't change anything at all, the app just suddenly decided to stop downloading my emails. I also didn't change any of the settings on my server, and Thunderbird on my desktop still downloads my new emails just fine.
I'm using HTC Desire with the stock 2.2 rom, no backup software. This has happened once before but it was because I didn't have any internal storage left, but this time I checked and I have a lot of space, so I have no idea why it won't download them. Everything else (internet browser, gmail, etc) works fine. Am on AT&T in the US.
Anyone know why this happened? How to fix it?
edit: solved. paypal had sent me an email with some weird characters in the subject which blocked it from downloading in the app which also stopped all further emails from downloading. Deleted it through Thunderbird and now everything works. god how I hate paypal

Sometimes, the original is better

I recently purchased the Moto G 4G LTE and have been having a blast with it. It was simple to unlock the bootloader, add TWRP, and root the device. It was also simple to unbloat the device since it did not have much bloatware on to begin with. Over all I am really pleased with my purchase.
I did change out the SMS app because the original was very bland. However, the email app was driving me crazy. So I spent a better part of the day looking at the available free email apps to see which one I would prefer over the stock app. I was totally disappointed when I found that all the apps I tried did not work well with GMail. Each app would fetch the test mail from GMail and then delete the mail preventing me for using Outlook to download the mail to my PC. No matter what I tried, the app would either delete or "mark as read" and my Outlook could not retrieve it.
It seems the only email app that worked in keeping the GMail intact was the stock email app on the phone. But I don't like it because it does not tell me if it is sync'ing with the server and downloading or not. So I have no way of knowing except if an email is download it will give me a notification. It won't even give me the last sync timestamp.
Anyone using an email app that works with GMail (retrieve but leave unaltered), AND, you can also download the email with Outlook?
What's wrong with using the actual Gmail app and syncing on your Outlook?
There's going to be a combination of Gmail POP3 settings and mail client settings that will determine if a message is deleted from the server or not upon retrieval.
I use the free version of Maildroid, it works great with what I use, being Outlook, MSN, and Gmail. Puts everything into one place.
I don't understand why, but the OEM email does not affect the mail on GMail. When I access the mail and download it to my phone, I can then access the same email from Outlook on my PC and download the same mail. But using other applications like K-10 and Aquamail, when I download the mail to my phone I cannot access with Outlook on my PC. So the other mail programs must be doing something that the OEM email app is not doing. Strange. I have also tried some different settings in GMail to no avail.
I cannot comment about the apps that you have mentioned, but providing the app that you choose uses IMAP then the various email clients should maintain synchronization with each other. @Darkshado mentioned POP3. I used to have problems with Hotmail using POP3, but since they implemented IMAP the problems have disappeared. I can confirm that Maildroid works correctly, you can choose in settings whether or not to delete messages off the server.
Thanks for the tip on Maildroid. That works for me. Much appreciated.
Glad to help. I just wish that is was cheaper, but I hardly notice the ad's at the bottom anymore
I am surprised the other apps that you tried have problems, I was thinking that you had made a mistake in the configuration or something. We learn..... Cheers.

I have added AdBlock and the ads are gone. The other mail programs had all the same options but did not do what I wanted. Very frustrating because I liked their aesthetics. But like you said, live and learn...
I use K9. It's open source and has pretty advanced settings to manage synchronization and server actions. It takes some to to configure, but that can be an advantage...
K-9 was another one I tested that did not work for me. Appreciate the response though. Some of these mail programs look really nice. K-9 was one of them, I just wish it would not molest the mail so I can download it later into my Outlook mail for archiving.
Hi, Can you tell me which Adblock is the best one to use. I find quite a few on play store.

I have used Adblock Plus for the longest on my Firefox browser PC and Tablet. So I went with what I know best, AdbLock Plus ver 1.2.1. On my free apps I see absolutely no ads. Wonderful.
Thanks for the pointer. Apparently it's banned from the Play Store, no wonder that I didn't find it. I did try another one called Adblock which is on Play Store and it seemed to do nothing at all. Anyway, I have been using the one that you suggested for about a week now, and you are correct, no ads anywhere. No wonder Google doesn't allow it! Thank's..

Enable Stock Email App in Lollipop 5.0

I know a lot of people really like the new gmail app. Visually speaking it is very nice but it does not have a combined view which did not work for me. I also liked using the two different widgets within the apps to differentiate my email account.
Here is a quick and easy method of enabling both the stock email and gmail app. You must have your system rooted. First install Uninstaller Pro (RU) to remove both the stock email app and gmail app. Next install both the stock email and gmail app from the play store. That's it. You are back to the setup you are used to.
well, it worked in the sense that I can open the stock email app again, but it won't connect to my hotmail account. I tried both the auto setup and the manual method, either it gives me server error or a username/password error.
I might be wrong here (haven't tested it because I don't use the stock email app), but wouldn't something like titanium backup also be able to uninstall the apps?

Question GMS Notifications

Hello,
Does anyone know how to fix the delayed google services notifications? I have tried everything but they still came late, I have a google pixel and they came on time compared to my Fold 2 this happens when the device is locked but when I unlock it the notifications start popping out.
I have tried all these settings:
Disabled Battery->Settings->Scenarios->Sleep mode
Enabled Apps->Gmail->Autostart and Changed Battery saver mode to unrestricted
Enabled all notifications for the App in question
Rooted my devices and disabled Doze with the Doze off app
ran adb shell dumpsys deviceidle disable
Nothing has worked for me , any other idea what I could do?
Thanks
I don't know what GMS notifications are but I was going insane not getting gmail notifications when my phone screen was off as well, go back and look at my posts in this forum about it.
the app DozeOff fixed it for me from the Fdroid store. If you are rooted that should fix it. I think a combo of that app plus using the systemizer magisk module and making apps I was having problems with notifications system apps fixed it, dozeoff alone may fix it if you want to try that first.

GMS = Google Mobile Services, I have the dozeoff app installed but that alone didn't fix the issue, I'll try systemizing the apps.
Thanks!!
GMS is a framework, not an app. There are two basic frameworks on Android devices - GMS (Google Mobile Services) and HMS (Huawei Mobile Services). These frameworks must be installed on your device for apps from those respective infrastructures to work. GMS is backed into the firmware on Xiaomi CN ROMS, but it is not turned on by default. Search "Google" in your settings and you find "Google Basic Services". Turn it on. After that step, if you are not receiving instant notifications for particular Google apps, such as Gmail, you may want to use a different app. Email notifications using the Gmail app are notoriously slow on this device, as are Google email accounts accessed using the Outlook email app. The workaround for delayed Gmail notifications is to use an app called Edison Mail. Gmail accounts set up in Edison Mail get instant notifications. What other Google apps are you experiencing delayed notifications on?

Thank you for the clarification. The "Google Basic Services" has been enabled all the time and the issue persists, I also have notification issues with the Google Home app they are not arriving on time(I have Nest Security cameras) of course that app also uses the GMS framework for push notifications.
Thanks
Have you put your phone in developer mode and disabled optimizations?

Where to find this optimizations menu?
Go to main Settings on your Xiaomi device. Scroll down to find About Device/Phone and tap on it. Locate MIUI Version and tap several times on it. After that, you will get a message "You're now a developer!" on your device screen. Go back into Settings and you will now see Developer Options. Scroll down to the bottom of those options and toggle off Miui Optimizations.
