is it possible?
Sure, long press it on your homescreen and go to the info page for the app and select FORCE STOP.

I have my back key long press set to kill foreground app in GravityBox. You would need Magisk, EdXposed, and GravityBox to do it my way though.
Renovate also has it included. It cant be done without root unfortunately. I assume you mean as above, long pressing back.
If rooted, try GMD Gestures

with cf-root you can root-unroot with supersu app.
just go in settings --> enable superuser
this hide the root, without reboot.
I use it every day

dont tell me!!! hahahaha
problem is that with the latest OTA upgrade the multiwindows settings have been over-ridden to default, so I lost all non-native multiwindow apps, and the only way to have them back is root
Some apps expect me to press a Menu button to get to some of their features, but I do not have a menu button. How do I handle the case where the developer expects the old standard menu button to be present and does not comply with newer Android standards? Is there a workaround to access the app features in the menu in those cases?
Thanks
Some ROMs require you to enable the menu button. It's in the settings menu but I can't tell you exactly where because it is different on each ROM.
Jxt. said:
you can add a menu button depending on your rom, which are you on?
Or you can use pie controls, that has a menu button.

I am on the rooted Jellybean ROM supplied in the first post of this thread

What is pie controls? Is that something in the Play Store?

The ROM is in first post under step 1, how to root. I used the 4.1.2 Jellybean ROM from there. It is based on stock ROM, only it is rooted.
I am extremely satisfied with the stock marshmallow (MRA58N) . The only thing that bothers me is that I need to save my power button (random power off issue when pressing power button, may fail completely in near future). Right now I am using gravity screen app to use my proximity sensor to wake the device. This does not work all the time. I end up using the power button.
I know almost all the custom rom out there supports volume rocker to wake. But I dont want to move to custom rom. So the way is to root. So here is my question
1. Will unlock the boot loader
2. Flash StephanMc_Kernel
3. Install twrp
4. Flash super su
5. After this what to do ?

Your best shot, for stock ROM is Xposed and Gravity Box. But IMO there is some bugs and we must wait little for improved versions.

I don't understand your question. Please be more specific in your querry and I will respond. In fact you must flash custom ROM for that volume wake up.

Why? If you're unlocking the bootloader, flashing twrp and flashing a kernel you're almost there anyway.
I am on stock C456B385 and seem Smart key funtion not work. I set it on and assign Press in Flasflight then check nut it not turn on. Current I am on stock with unlocked bootloader. Anyone can explain?
I don't know what causes it but, try activating swipe on the fingerprint scanner for notification panel (as I've seen in a reddit thread)

That's good news that fp is working! Maybe you're right. However it's a sensor/hardware button, so maybe the button doesn't function while the sensor is working.
I hope it is software issue

There's something (which we don't know) that keeps it not working.

have you tried clearing the data and cache for Smart Key app? perhaps better to Force Stop the app, clean its data and cache then restart the phone.
He tried factory reset, which means data of smart key app have been cleared.
It's so hard to figure out what causes it
I doubt that, I didn't face this issue no matter what I've done.
I guess this leads to the possibility of hardware issue
Perhaps the final test would be to do a rollback to marshmallow rom, just in case. If that didn't work, service center it is then.
That's a great suggestions, I hope it turns out a software issue.

Strange. Are you actually pressing the button and not simply laying your finger on top?
I was able to root my pixel 4 xl using the latest Magisk canary build of the manager 7.4.0-121afbed
Hopefully you have already unlocked your bootloader but if not do that and it will reset your data
Download the factory image and extract boot.img
Patch boot.img with Magisk Manager
flash magisk_patched.img with fastboot flash boot magisk_patched.img
Thanks you @topjohnwu
Yep, just finished rooting and activating my Google Pay. Looking good so far.
Only thing to hope for now is TWRP and some custom ROMs, even though the only thing left that I use would be center clock and network speed in the status bar.

I get this error!! Do you know why??
Uh oh.... Freaking out here.
Wont boot properly. Followed all instructions in the other thread. It takes me back to fastboot mode repeatedly, with the error underneath "Boot slot: a", saying "Enter reason: error booting boot.img". I unlocked the bootloader before doing anything. Tried going into rescue mode, but it just takes me back to fastboot mode.
What do? How fix?
Halp!
NEVER MIND! Worked it out. On my initial flash of the patched file, I mistyped 'patched' as 'patchad'. Idiot mistake. Works perfectly! :victory:
