Andy Rubin statement - Essential Phone Guides, News, & Discussion

Guys,
few days ago Andy Rubin twitted the company will announce something soon. That's very promising.
Essential Chief R&D guy also seems to travel to China a lot recently.
Maybe after all, we will get PH-2, it's nice to dream
Honestly, they wouldn't have to do much R&D, the PH-1 got it almost right from every aspect. If they simply update to SD855 and 6-8gb RAM, plus maybe camera sensor, then i'm sold. Nice additions like under screen selfie camera, face unlock and gesture navigation, and would be perfect!

I'd be happy with adding SD card support, better bluetooth, bigger battery, OIS, in addition to those things you mentioned. Would be nice to have more than 1 version of the phone, perhaps an SD855 model and an SD730 for a different price point.

If we could get bigger battery and better radios then I'm sold.
And don't forget backward compatibility with the 360 camera!

I think the Ph2 should have cpu SD 855, an OLED screen, a better camera and especially improve the camera software and a bigger battery.
It has a great opportunity to position itself for what is happening with Huawei and other Chinese companies.
It is the only company that managed to have the same updates as a Pixel and this was thanks to the great support it made in the PH1.
I'm just waiting for the PH2 for changing my PH1! ! !

with all the new phones being bezelless I don't see a reason to stick with essential anymore

The rise and fall of the K-Zoom

It's such a shame that the K Zoom never really took off. I owned one for about 6 months and loved it. I only changed it when the Note 4 was released. But during my time with the KZ I found the camera produced amazing photos with its 10X zoom and Xenon flash. The phone part was very capable too with a good sized high resolution screen, along with a decent amount of power. I also thought the price tag on this device was very reasonable too.
So why did it fail? Well I am guessing on a few theories. Firstly, maybe that it looked too much like the Galaxy S5 and although I personally don't think either the S5 or KZ look bad at all, a lot of people do. Samsung was getting a lot of criticism for their lack lustre designs and maybe it was released at the wrong time. Another theory would be that it was bulky. Though less so than its predecessor the Galaxy S4 Zoom. Maybe some weren't sure about a hybrid device, especially when cameras on phones in general were exceeding the quality of standalone cameras.
But I am a firm believer that one of the reasons these niche devices fail, is because Samsung just don't develop or support them once they are released. I mean development for their flagship phones doesn't exactly impress, so what chance does a less popular device get? Take the Galaxy Camera and the Galaxy Camera 2. Both great and revolutionary devices at the time but they just didn't get any proper updates. Both stuck on Jelly Bean and both having issues that a firmware upgrade could have cured. The K Zoom would have benefited from some firmware update love and an upgrade from KK 4.4.2 too was much needed.
I have always wanted to be able to afford to keep certain phones I buy in an archive. But due to the cost I tend to trade everything in to get the latest devices. If I had to choose which ones I would keep, then the K Zoom would be one of them. It is a great phone hybrid, it's a shame it didn't sell well and it's sad there is no successor in the pipeline.
So, why do you think the KZ didn't do so well?
I love the Kzoom - i will never be getting rid of it
I have a few fones , my main driver is zen2 4gb ram 64gb 64 bit SoC .
The kzoom is too luxurious to carry around , mainly for special events
The little development that has been, is enough for me -- its a special device and always will be in my eyes
The only fail is people just want the latest and thats not always the best !
Perhaps Samsung should consider aggressively supporting custom ROM development for the device?
I still use my KZ SM-C111 & take it everywhere I go, I think it's the best android smartphone ever. The only downside is no real support from Samsung.
I just wish anyone successfully make Lollipop Lite for KZ since it came with only 8GB capacity :crying:
it's big, it's heavy, it doesn't have enougth memory, the camera is not dust proof, the battery is too small, but I cannot find any other smartphone with a 10x zoom !
Hello, I really love my k zoom. The pictures are beautiful and the phone is absolutely not to heavy. Soon I can pick another phone but what about the motorola x style?
The fact its big and heavier than normal are exactly the reasons I was seriously considering getting one for my mum who has problems with her hands. The weight and size would be easier for her to hold, modern phones are too small and light that she would just drop them.
The fact its stuck on KitKat is a problem though as I worry about any security holes left in the OS due to no updates.
Love it!
:good:
I've got the K-Zoom from the time it just got out and love it.
The only thing that really suck is the way Samsung has been treating its customers with their crappy update policy but one cant blame the phone for that
The main reason the phone never really 'took off' is in my opinion:
Lack of publicity in Europe.
I havent met anyone in Europe who knew the phone. Everyone who sees it and whom I inform about its specs is interested. Especially in its camera's capability's. The huge lens that appears out of the phone amazes everyone as well as the quality of the pictures. Havent had any negative remarks about the looks or its weight. In fact I've had countless requests of people who wanted to buy it from me.
The name should have been S5 zoom to like the S4 zoom which was more of a camera that could make calls.
I only found out about the K-zoom after intensive search for a good camera phone. Most people don't take that time but after calling/messaging, making pictures/videos is the biggest thing on smartphones so the problem want lack of interest.
Sure there are better phones and better cameras but who wants to pack both all the time?
I love my K Zoom but I wish Samsung (or an XDA developer) would support Marshmallow on it and allow apps to be transferred to the SD card.
The K-Zoom is not dead...

I love my K Zoom. Was definitely not advertised enough/properly. After I Rooted my phone (My first Rooted phone) I was able to transfer all apps to the external 64gb SD & I mean all (Games, applications, etc)
The only reason that I want to change my phone is its lack of Mirrorlink support that my new vehicle has.
Great camera, good battery life
I even have my LG Optimus 3D because of its 3D camera & glasses free 3D content.
Its for keeps...

You are lucky if you can afford to keep them. I had a HTC Evo 3D and I loved it. But 3D never took off sadly, the novelty factor was awesome but like most novelties they fall out of favour. This is another phone I would like to have kept in my little phone museum!

I disagree. This is just a bolt on to a phone, it's not the true hybrid device of the K-Zoom or S4 Zoom. It looks like Samsung don't have plans to produce another phone like this (though you never know)

Here I am from Rome, I quote everything you say. Now I'm just waiting my other phone (P9) to come back from service due to a broken (insured) glass and I'll send there my KZoom to change and clean the lens. This is the only drawback of such a good phone and such an extraordinary camera (I took some wonderful night pictures in Pisa, couldn't believe my eyes). As soon as it will be back I will root it and try to swap memorys.

I recently damaged my screen with some water. Got me a S5 mini. These are rather cheap and are quite good actually as well as water resist
Its 8mp cam doesn't perform al that bad but it doesn't compare to the K-zoom which i'm definitely going to get fixed!
Our K-zooms are going to be collectors items since there have only been made and sold few of them i believe :good:
Samsung K Zoom was the king once
Bought this phone (CM 115) for my wife the other day since it was on special and she has always wanted one ever since it was released almost two years back. She absolutely loves her new K Zoom and it's so sad to see how such a powerful phone camera is being ignored by it's developer Samsung.
This phone is amazing with how smoothly it integrates with that camera on board. Just also hope that one day there might be a little bit of something coming from Samsung for this phone in terms of OS that might make this phone more current.
I too own the Galaxy K Zoom, it's a bit...damaged - but otherwise works fine
Got it super cheap due to the digitizer being cracked near the bottom, and thought it was the greatest thing ever with that massive camera!
Played around with it for a while and yeah, it's a great phone with reasonable specs, looks like an S5 (Which never bothered me), and was the perfect blend of a "Camera Phone".
For use as a phone - perfect. In your hands it feels just like that era of Samsung Devices, then go into Camera Mode and it becomes like one of Samsungs flagship cameras. It's amazing how that switch is so well thought out.
Hex-Core, 2GB RAM, 4G/LTE etc. At first I thought it has to be more powerful, logically than the S5 but I think I maybe wrong.
Probably due to being on 4.4.2 and my S5 being on 6.0.1, there's a noticeable difference in speed and all that. The S5 is snappy whereas the K Zoom is a bit laggy.
Camera - I used it a lot for some great photos of close ups of electronics, PCBs etc. Then I kind of got a little iffy with the battery draining quick when taking a decent amount of photos and with the whole phone getting pretty warm and went to my S5 again and was happy with it.
So for 6 months it's been in my DroidDraw, (I have a lot of unusual Android based phones in there) and this was hidden at the side along with my other camera based phones like my HTC Evo 3D and Sharp Aquos 3D Camera phone (SH16?), anyway, got the K Zoom out and really made me think why did this phone fail. It is a great phone but for consumers, being bulky, looking like a reused design, an old OS etc. I think it all attributed to it becoming just one of those fad phones.
Whatever, I appreciate it for what it is. Samsung need to do another phone mix up one day. They can do it. Just need the demands for it I suppose.
So nobody made Lolipop for this phone ? How come ?

Switched from iPhone to Huawei P9!

Today I finally made the switch! Was a little scared if I am gonna love this phone, they way I loved my iPhone. But I was very surprised how nice and better this phone feel. And the screen is gorgeous compared to my iPhone 6. And this phone is fast, like a lot... Made couple photos just to test the camera and I must admit, it's so damn good. So glad I did not get the iPhone 7 (700 euro). This phone is 400 euro here in Bulgaria with 2 year contract 11 euro for the plan - Unlimited talk + 8000MB internet and free HBO Go - Unlimited data to Facebook and Whats app. . So it's pretty good. Hope it won't give me some problems in time... And surprisingly coming from iPhone the UI on Huawei looks pretty good to me. Only thing I really wanted in this phone is Double tap to wake up...
And the best thing, I got a free bluetooth speaker Huawei. This made even better the deal. So if you think about getting one. Don't think twice. I don't know if it will be a flawless device but the Build, camera, screen are great.
Could'nt agree more. It is just a superb phone. You have to take price into the equation, like you have to in any other comparison. And this unit comes up pretty high.
Good screen, camera, software, speed and looks! Quality is great, support is great and update history is phenomenal. Great choice!

I switched from iphone 6 to the Huawei. Quite happy so far ! Camera, interface speed and browsing is quick. I guess the Huawei P9 is the best phone for iphone switchers
I switched froim Iphone 6 too). Iphone was to boring, elegant but boring. I hate typical android phones like samsung, lg so I have Huawei P9 and I am very happy. Huawei is beautifull, very fast and I love EMUI, because EMUI has almost everything good from IOS and android. I feel like I am using IOS, but I have everything good from android
Really happy about you guys. I love my phone too. There are some little things like not having missed notification badges on all apps but I guess it could be fixed with updates or Android N. Will see. Great phone, especially compared to iPhone (smaller) variant. Screen is beautiful and great for media. And the price was really great for this phone.
Huawei gave me free bluetooth speaker? Did you get one?
was curious to read all feedbacks because i come from similar background. Had iphone 7 Htc 1+ Moto and finally opted for P9. Its been 6 weeks. Phone is superb. Blazing fast and premium harhardware for a fraction of price. I predict Huawei bright future given in the last several years they achieved so much. In UK you can get it for £350. For such price you can'tget a better phone and 3 years warranty. Period.
My nephew, in 2 weeks time he went from Sony lover to " my next phone can easily be huawei" .
I think Huawei is really proving itself as an emerging smartphones manufacturing company. Recently they announced that 9 Million P9 units have been sold so far around the globe at the rate of 1.3 Million units per month since its release back in April current year.
everything about this phone is still gorgeous , still same after usage for 5 months now
Love this phone. Initially brought it as a stop gap option till iPhone 7 plus arrives. But was so disappointed with the iphone. Just brought a leica case since looks like I'll be sticking to this phone for a while.
Its working so well with MM ,for the first time I'm almost apprehensive of the Nougat update.
Switched from iPhone 6 tot P9 too, very happy! Thought about it for a very long time but no regrets One question: is there any way to display if i'm connected via 3g or 4g? I live in a area where my iPhone switched frequently but on my P9 it's not in the notification/statusbar anymore..

It's official, the 7 and 7+ will be Snap 450

Announced this morning 6/14. Looks as though the 7a only will have the mediatek chip.
The other thing mentioned was price, and for the 7+ the Korean price is converted to US 500 plus! Seems very high to me. As is usual, the price will probably drop significantly after a few months.
The SD450 is built with 14nm tech, which is fairly recent. Has a 3.5 jack, nfc, 145g weight, decent cameras, LTE band 71, quick charge type-C, a lot going for it.
No word on availability in the States yet, I hope soon.
It might come with SD450 only in Korea.
In Europe, at least, it looks like it's coming with that outdated, slow, energy inefficient Mediatek chip:
http://www.lg.com/it/telefoni-cellulari/lg-LMQ610EM-lg-q7
I reaaaally hope it's a mistake and it's actually SD450, because that Mediatek chip is even slower than Q6's SD435, which didn't perform well at all, especially on FHD+ resolution.
And Mediatek phones are rarely or never updated to the next version of Android. This + LG's track record with updates = not good at all.
So far, I haven't found any hands-on video or article outside of Korea, so I'm still waiting with my money.
If it's Mediatek, I'd rather buy a Huawei P Smart / Honor 9 Lite instead - same price as Q6 (cheaper than Q7 will be), but twice the performance; not water resistant and bigger size than Q7, though, those are my reasons for waiting for LG.
It's difficult to tell which markets will get which version @nick_white ... wish I knew also.
Here's one of the sources I saw indicating sd450: https://www.gizmochina.com/2018/06/14/lg-q7-plus-launched-korea-specs-price/
I'm taking a wait and see attitude now, partly because of the uncertainties you mention, and partly because we just don't know what we'll get in the States. Another indication has it that there will be an Android One version of the phone exclusive to T-Mo (which does make some sense in that the Q7 does have LTE band 71, and the only carrier that uses that band is T-Mo).
I was close to selling my Huawei Mate SE, glad I didn't now, it's a great phone and now I've decided not to give it up and take the monetary loss with the *hope* I'd like the Q7. I may not like it!
Lot's and lot's of new phones coming out, the potential for a great Google midrange is there, I'm just waiting now also, but happy with the Mate SE at the mo.
This just got reported, the q7 and q7+ launched in Korea, both have the SD450. Price for the q7+ is about 515, but I've read the mobiles in Korea are always priced excessively high and not indicative of price elsewhere.
We'll see about that fairly soon I'd guess.

There is a hands-on article: https://translate.googleusercontent...700201&usg=ALkJrhiYxnFrZKoyckA8be8mwbuQZHVnYQ
It says that the back is plastic! Not again, LG?! This was one of the biggest complaints for the Q6 - that the back was scratched extremely easy, even on the first day of usage.
There's another, newer article on that site, that says it has Mediatek processor, and the launch price is higher than the current price of the G6 (not Q6)...

I'm taking a wait and see approach re the processor. I blame LG for all the confusion, of course! I'm sure they think they can save money by having the lesser capable processor for countries that it's appropriate, but now no Country knows what it will get until it's actually released there.
Plastic? Not a problem for me. I prefer it. The dead give a way is that the specs show the phone only weighs 145g. I don't think there's any phone with a 5.5" screen with that weight that isn't plastic back. Just not possible.
While the back may show up scratches easily (I believe you), that's because of the finish. The Nexus 5 or 5x (both plastic), didn't show scratches easily. Many OEM's try to make the plastic look like a **mirror**... all the trend lately. Personally, I hate it. Total waste. All flashy flash crap imho.
Can always get a skin for the back, my preference for anything that scratches easily.
According to this report, the Q7 plus, in India, will be about US equivalent 265$ and have the SD450.
http://www.mysmartprice.com/mobile/lg-q7-plus-msp14845
Seriously, a Motorola G6 competitor with almost twice the price (launch price)?
It's almost the perfect smartphone for me... except for that low end SoC. Give it a Snapdragon 636 or 660!
The things that the Q7 has, that Moto G6 doesn't are:
- IP68 and MIL certification
- considerably more compact: smaller, ligher, smaller bezels, no nonsense wasted space (Motorola, did you reaaaly have to include that useless logo above the fingerprint reader?!)
---------- Post added at 04:00 PM ---------- Previous post was at 03:39 PM ----------
It's also sold in Japan as LG Style L-03K, there are some hands-on articles & videos.

Exactly Nick. Not many phones anymore are less than 150 grams. To some, that may not matter, but to others it means quite a bit. Additionally, a 5.5" screen is getting rarer and rarer. I'd prefer an SD 6xxx, but the 450 isn't going to kill me. I don't play games on my phone, I don't use it as a 'small' computer, I use it as a... wait for it... PHONE!!
hahahaha. Everything else is pretty much secondary. Top priority: Lightweight and workable phone. Camera and screen are very important also, but not top priority. I certainly don't need a thousand dollar phone because it has a Leica lens. A phone camera will never take the place of an interchangeable lens mirrorless camera.
It's all what your priorities / needs are. We all differ. For me, the Q7 fits the bill mostly. The unlockable bootloader is a concern. There's no 'official' way to unlock the Q6 (assuming the Q7 will be the same).
Have a Mate SE now and it's great really. But that metal uni-body makes for a heavy phone, along with the 6" screen. To me, it's way more of a small computer than a mobile phone, for my preferences.

But that's where I am out. With the known history of updates, or rather the lack of them, from manufacturers and "intended" lifecycles of two years (mine seem to be much longer), having third party OS support (LOS,...) is a must.
I was really looking forward to the Q7. With dimensions smaller than most, nice display, DualSIM, dedicated SD-slot, fingerprint reader, IP68, 3,5mm audio connector, etc. it was pretty close to my requirements. But if there is no way to unlocked the bootloader it's out.

I can absolutely understand your concern there. It would be a tough choice for me to go from a Mate SE, with my unlock code, to a phone that may not be unlockable. How much bloatware will the Q7 have? Will they update it regularly? Lot's of questions.
But, there are reports that T-Mo will have a version of this phone, and it will be an Android One phone (but also it said the SD450 would be running in 32bit mode? wtf?). It's also **possible** LG will put this phone on the list of officially unlockable phones (the Q6 is not on it).
I'm taking a wait and see on the Q7, I tend to keep a phone for quite a few years also, much to the dismay of manufacturers I'm sure
My Nexus 5 has Los Nougat and it's doing great. I hate running bloatware.
The Q7+ for the European market is available now and all sources say it has the Mediatek processor.
And no bootloader unlock in sight.
Sorry LG, the Q7 is out of question for me.
Here's one of the first reviews, you can use Google Translate: https://www.tomsguide.fr/article/test-lg-q7-smartphone,2-2325.html
LG really messed up by using that outdated, slow, inefficient processor...
In graphics, it's more than twice as slow as the Q6, which was already struggling with the FHD+ resolution!
The back is also plastic, just like Q6, you can see the scratches in the pictures.
And LG is asking twice the amount for Q6, the same as a new G6, which is superior in all ways (but bigger and bulkier).
I decided to just buy a Q6, my main attractions for the Q7 were the compactness and the screen, and you get both on Q6 as well, for half the price. And a faster processor...

LG really messed up by using that outdated, slow, inefficient processor...
In graphics, it's more than twice as slow as the Q6, which was already struggling with the FHD+ resolution!

I'm almost certain that the US market will get the Q7 with the snap 450, not the mediatek. Yeah, I would not get one with the mediatek, that's for sure.
Thought about going with a Q6 myself. Pretty difficult to make a decision. Ended up with (another) LG G6. The G6 has a fair amount of development for it, in just a few days have completely debloated it and have the google camera port for wide angle and normal lense.
Had a lot of hope for the Q7 though. But the article you cite is disappointing, the cameras sound bad, and one of the reasons I was interested are the wide angle lenses!
Google is coming out with some new devices, rumor about a new Nexus style also. A lot to choose from
GSMArena is reporting this morning the Q7 will be available soon on the T-Mo site. And yes, it will be snap 450 and support band 71.

Why so much hate for the 3 XL ?

Wow the Pixel 3 XL is getting bagged and dogged on left and right as if it's the worst smartphone ever made. Yes it could have been designed better for sure. Try to go the more minimal notch like Essential or something, and no bottom chin, do the stereo speakers like the HTC 10, or and the iPhone XS, and Note 9's, do, etc... to allow a more full screen design. Yes give us 6GB RAM.
Mainly in tech forums I keep reading so much hate for the Pixel 3 XL;
https://forums.macrumors.com/threads/pixel-3-pixel-3-xl.2106788/page-68#post-26666374
And YouTube channels dogging on the phone big time
But I still wouldn't go iPhone, just not an iOS fan whatsoever. And Samsung Touchwiz not my thing either. So if I hate the iPhone, don't like Galaxy phones and the Pixel 3 is sub par, what's the other options? I wish we had a third option, a Windows Surface phone or something.
Oh well, I still have my White Pixel 3 XL on order, and not changing. Yes the notch is ugly, and more RAM would have been nice, but I still value stock Android, updated directly and quickly from Google, and the smooth fluid vanilla UI, and the amazing camera, and A+ rated display, and IP68 rating, and wireless charging. Maybe I'm a sucker, but that's my choice.
Honestly, I didn't even notice the notch when I was checking out the display phone at Verizon. I love the feel of the phone, very well balanced and light compared to my old Nexus 6. Can't wait to get my phone call on Thursday (I hope) to come and pick up my phone.
I think manly they are charging Flagship prices but not delivering on flagship hardware /specs compared to whats already on the market and instead are betting on software to carry them. Now i love pure android how its meant to be not a fan of all tweaks each manufacture adds to the phone, If Samsung offered a note 9 /S9 pure (ie stock android no mods) i think the pixel would be left in its dust. The Pixel's have always seemed to be a generation behind. I love my pixel 2 xl i know i just wanted something more to go with the great feel of stock android and what not. maybe next year, i have my 3 XL ordered and will use it for a week or two to see if its worth the upgrade over my 2 XL
How would I have like to see Google design the Pixel 3 XL? Well on a realistic manner not some unrealistic futuristic design but a realistic version could have been a cross between like the LG V30 shape and size with the minimal bezels but give it the Essential notch and stretch the screen out on the top and bottom. And then do the stereo speakers like on the Note 9 or iPhone so they don't have to be front-facing, and allow for full display with almost no bezels at like 6.2" or so. And give it 6GB RAM. And a bigger 4,000MaH battery.
At the end of the day, for October 2018, I still think FOR ME, the Pixel 3 XL is the best phone out.
- Stock vanilla Android is my bread and butter OS. I go back to owning the Nexus-One when it was new, then waiting in line for the Nexus-S at launch. I just have a thing for stock Android, all other versions of Android just irritate me, or frustrate me.
- Updates first and quickly
- A+ rated display
- Best camera
- Wireless charging now
- IP68 rating is nice
- Phone can easily be rooted, mainly for the best ad blocking and Substratum themes
No other phone right now interests me. The Note 9 or S9+ ? Not at all, no way, Lagwiz still exists no matter what people say. The LG V40, yeah that's cool, but not a fan of the LG skin, and they suck at updates. iPhone XS Max looks super cool, a very beautifully built device, really liked it a lot, but man I hate iOS, and on the XS Max the OS looks out of place, dated like something from a decade ago. OnePlus 6T, yeah will be a great phone, but they always skimp somehow.
Is the Pixel 3 XL the best phone of 2018 ? NO, not at all. But for me a stock Android nerd, it's really the only option.
Yeah if the Iphone XS Max ran android it would be a dream phone lol IMO ... That said i do think the Note 9 Running stock android with all the software options of the pixel 3 would be a great option as well .
PSA:
Don't read Mac/Apple websites for reviews on Android devices. They are quite happy being locked into their apple ecosystem and will never appreciate the open source model of a pixel device.
No hate here, just wish the display was LARGER......Note9/V40 temp me with their larger displays......but I can't get away from pure google... C'mon google, 6.5 next year!!!
Why the hate? Did you notice that big black malignancy at the top of the screen? What about specs that are less than impressive? My guess is the answer is right there between those two things. Flagship means flagship, you want to charge this kinda money you need some wow factor and the ability to say you're second to none and have that hold water.
These devices don't give me that vibe. Too me they're like the second toughest guy on the block saying "Look, I can juggle!" As to the former enough has been said about it. I personally found my Best Buy experience to fall between what some said. At points when I was busy manipulating the GUI I forgot about it completely. Any time I stepped back from specific tasks the thing jumped out at me, it was like getting mugged with an ugly stick every timei looked at the phone as an object.
Yeah, I'm stupid so I'm still thinking about buying even though I'm not convinced I won't be sorry.

I don't agree with this at all. The pixel 3 xl has a Samsung screen which looks amazing (and I bet is par or at least close to what you see on a Samsung phone), it has the latest Quallcom processor, the best cameras and software, same day updates, wireless charging, front facing speakers, I mean, what else does it need to be 'flagship specs' to you? What, because it only has 4 GB of RAM? That's literally the ONLY thing I can come up with, and that's only because many OEM's have stuffed more RAM in their phones this year. And honestly, it's not really necessary, at least not for 90% of people who use smartphones. Sheet, iPhones only have 4 GB or RAM. They only had ONE GB or RAM for a looonnnggg time. No one complained about that.
To me, this is a premium flagship, no question. The hate is mostly the RAM and notch. It's superficial. Last year it was the blue shift. Which, I think that plus the terrible quality control was actually warranted. This year, it's not much to hate on. Either you like it, or don't get it. And you can hide the notch. Either way, I'm excited about it coming today. I LOVE 2 xl, but I'm definitely ready for this upgrade, even though I was very on the fence before I checked one out in the store. My point here is, people are going to hate on something every time. Every time. If you don't like something, don't get it. It's really that simple.

I was simply stating why i think so many people hate the new pixel 3 xl from reading it sure does seem like a lot don't like it.
I agree the screen looks great but it should since they woke up and used a Samsung panel this time yay , my issue with it is its basically the same size as the 2 xl when you look at the usable part of the display and that is kinda disappointing to me i wanted a screen the size of the note 9 / XS max on the pixel 3 xl instead they went with a huge notch that takes away from the phone in stead of adding to it i honestly think they would have been better with out it at all, in person the notch isn't bad at all its big but once you play with it for a bit i didn't notice it as much and i don't mind the bottom chin as people call it since i love front firing speakers always hated cupping the end of the phone to direct the sound lol . They added an extra front camera and notch but no type of face id another missing feature that would have been a great addition to the pixel but we got wireless charging back so i guess its a trade off.
I said nothing about the ram because i think that's a mute point for most for the exact reason you said, apple has had little ram for a long time there is a difference between the two since apple designs the cpu they can help optimize it for the amount of ram they are using but mostly they iOS optimized for how it can handle the ram. google does the same with the pixel, most of the other phones need the extra ram because all the bs they add uses so much of it. for me as of now my daily usage on my 2 XL is 2.4-3.2 or so, 4gb is enough for me in 6 months that may not be the case but i doubt it
everyone has different ideas of what makes a phone flag ship quality or not, so this is just my opinion and you can agree or not for me i feel they could have done better and they came up a bit short compared to other phones only time will tell though and i still cant wait to get mine and use it to see if its worth the upgrade from the 2xl or not for me.
Nah, I don't buy it. Flagship is flagship. Almost flagship if it weren't for one big weakness is not flagship, it's second rate. I'm one of those people that can take advantage of more than 4 gigs of ram, I'm currently using 3.2 at home which is about average for me but usually hit in the upper 4s, lower 5s at work. Go ahead and name the one phone which is claiming flagship status and charging flagship prices but does not have me covered? See where I'm going?
Flagships is flagship, not second best with software optimization that every rooted oneplus will have installed not too far down the road on a phone that costs little more than half the price. Yeah, I'm talking about the camera. Still perhaps best in class overall but more than one reviewer has noted that telephoto shots lag behind other flagships including the fruit devices. They need to up their game here, flagships don't polish turds, they deliver the best hardware and polish that.
One that doesn't bother me in the slightest that I noted is the phones perceived build quality is a step behind Samsung and Apple. I cant point to one particular thing, either of those two just felt a little more expensive. As I said, I don't care because the phone will go into a case and I wont see it again until I give it to one of my kids or grand-kids in the spring.
So yeah, to me it feels like it's not quite up to flagship par except in price. It's all those things combined that give me that impression. And yeah, I'm still thinking about buying it, last night I got as far as putting it in my cart. Pixel has always been more the whole than the sum of its part, they are satisfying to own even if some things about them are underwhelming. The doubletake on the notch has me spooked though, when I was moving around the GUI it faded out of existence but when I just looked at the phone I kept doing this "whoa, what the hell were they thinking" thing. Cant figure out if that's ever going to go away or if it's going to be like a sore tooth. Still, buy in or not I'll never really consider it flagship hardware and every redraw I get will remind me of it should I start to forget.
The flagship price, the poor software utilization of the notch, the smaller battery and 4 GB RAM were the deal breakers.
The Note 9 is every bit as fast as the Pixel 3 XL, has a much better screen, better battery and SPen for the same price. The Pixel 3 XL may very well be a great phone but when priced with the Note 9, it needed SOMETHING to justify the price. Also, one can easily get a great condition LG V35 ThinQ or S9+ with better specs for hundreds less. Once the price drops, then it might be a better competitor.
For me a premium device needs to last me 2 years and be a useful companion for the duration.
The phone needs to be well built to last, have a good screen and the hardware features need to be ergonomic.
In addition to this the phone must have quick, well thought out software that ties in nicely to my favourite services.
For me, my best option is the Pixel 3 XL. I was considering the new Mate 20 pro as it is very similar in price here in the UK but there is now way I'll be putting up with their software and clutterware for two years. I'm also put off by their storage media and awful to uae, curved screen.
The pixel is getting stick for having underwhelming specs but this is a very short-sighted view unless your sole purpose for the device is to run benchmarks. People needs to evaluate what they use their phones for and what they need to achieve that.
I'm running the original Pixel XL 32Gb and it is still fantastic for all of my everyday uses. My wife is in fact selling her Samsung s9 and will be having my Pixel now that I've upgraded to the 3 XL.
Just as a side note, iPhones are brilliant for many as they offer a great experience across their devices and therefore are useful for their duration. This is more important than having a 40MP camera and 8Gb of RAM for the vast majority.
A lot of that was subjective: I find the Apple experience awful, spread it out across more devices and I call that cancer. I have to say however that your concept in general is on the mark in that the experience is what matters rather than the numbers. It's a fair summation.
for the peeps that hate on the notch and the ram .. just go buy the OnePlus 6T and be done with it
It's all just opinion as we have stayed here. The easy to pick on parts of any product is the visual appearance and listed specs. The new pixel XL appears to be poor in this area for a lot of people. Usabilit of the entire package is impossible to judge from online reviews.
If it is anything like the original Pixel, the phone will be great. If it's like my old Samsung phones or my iPhone 7, no thank you.
The phone is what it is. If you don't like it for the way it looks or a feature that it has or doesn't have, don't buy it. If all you have to say is you hate the notch, spare us. There are a lot of phones I don't like. I don't buy them and I don't seek out their communities and complain about them. This forum is here for the people that have the phone, not for those that hate it.

This! Sooo much this! Last year with the pixel 2 xl, there were so many trolls who had zero intention of ever buying the phone who came onto the forum just to talk sheet. One thread went hundreds of pages. It was ridiculous and stupid. If people like that really have that much time on their hands that they have to go troll things that have nothing to do with them, get a hobby or a life. Seriously. I'm surprised there isn't more yet on here. But, people have only begun to start getting their phones, so, I'm not holding my breath that it won't start.
It still looks like a toy next to any Samsung phones.
My note 9 looks like a monster next to my xl3.
I hate the notch. I'm not those people that will get over it.
I never will.
Anyway, display on xl3 looks great to me.
Camera is amazing.

Question Who's getting one?

Not sure if there's any definitive info out yet except for the Hassleblad partnership but anyone showing any interest for this phone. I've become a huge fan since the release of the OnePlus 8 Pro (my favorite phone of all time, lol) so I have high hopes for the next iteration. I'm hoping for better cameras and maybe an sd card slot?
Looking good!

The cam and its software may be good or a bomb.
However...
No SD card and limited internal storage means I never would touch it. At this point a SD card is mandatory for me.
While 128gb be more than enough storage for me for the OS/apps* it's not even half of my data requirement.
Meh, get up to speed or get out of my way... a pretty cam with no storage isn't a good trade off.
*currently using about 30 of 512gb internal.
341 gb on the SD card data drive.

Yep, I know what you mean. It's not mandatory for me but it makes things so convenient. Especially with google photos eliminating unlimited storage. I have a 1 terabyte card with almost half the thing full of my lossless music, videos, and photos.

The dream of a dual drive 1.5 tb computer in your hand has come true. Simply outstanding.
My XPx64 tower uses more power to boot up than takes my 10+ to run for the whole day.
Without a data drive life is much harder, at least if you make full use of the data drive.
Being able to do a full reload with no laptop, anywhere, anytime makes the phone completely self sufficient barring a hardware failure.
I'm interested in this phone.. always liked the oneplus but never got round to buying it as user reviews were mixed for the phone and customer service. I'm saying this as I am looking to upgrade from my much beloved Google Pixel 2. However it seems there are lots of announcement and releases this month...Asus Rog phone 5 today, Oppo Find X3 pro tomorrow Xiaomi Mi 11 next week and OnePlus 9 soon after, was also hoping for the Sony Xperia 1 III to be announced.... decisions decisions decisions!
I'm an 8t owner , and I'm pretty satisfied with my purchase they have been good with updates and yes there have been bugs but mostly all phones on R11 have some bugs , but the updates have fixed most , and let's see what they come with here one the 1+9 and the pro
After the slightly disappointing launch of the Oppo X3 keeping my fingers crossed for the OnePlus launch tomorrow... Or maybe hold out for the Sony Xperia 1 III

Yup let's see what they got for tomorrow
8Pro was a reference flagship, perfect in many microscopic details, so i did preorder cases for both newer models. Despite having another flagship on way, i expect to buy this one too. My hope is I can buy the base model for better WEIGHT, and hoping it won't be crippled in Samsung way (who made e.g. Note20 and any other non-Ultra totally avoidable). The great news is the base model has got wireless charging, and superfast charging and superfast-not-so-crippled compatible charging (45W PD). However last year they made model 8 redundant by having almost no improvements and trashy camera, so it's hard to say.
I'm expecting camera under display in model 10, so i'm buying cases as soon as possible I kind of hope they will run out of innovations and come back to geekness (bring back sd card, notif light) in model 10.
So what do people think....under the hood it is identical to the Oppo Find X3 pro...just cheaper and with free wireless charger and ear buds...this might be the one...
I currently have a OP8T and after watching the launch & the early reviews, I can safely say that I'm going to skip the OP9Pro... The generation jump is not noticeable and the new cameras didn't really live up to the hype. Xiaomi's Mi 11 Pro/Ultra looking more solid with no Hasselblad gimmick whatsoever.
watched the intro, and then review was added to gsmarena and phone was published in our top seller website in an coordinated way. battery rating is funny for 1+, but i believe phone will be holding charge for at least twice the time as Samsung despite. Just look at the huge 3G standby time - industry best. In my use case, that will mean it will make it to 3rd day easily and some more. For the video, they might fix it later, but i do not watch videos all day and do not run background script to prop display frequency either... not real use case. Camera great in wide and night, and not so great for the main sensor. Let's see more reviews. Base model defly with Qi and ultrafast 65T charging, however the weight is still 192g, which is disappointing. That actually makes the "compact" model obsolete if price insensitive. So there are some mild disappointments, and the best thing we can do is to buy it and moan later
I'm considering it. Currently I (still) have OP3 and I think it's time to upgrade. Looking at 256G version (absolutely no need for SD card here). I wouldn't mind, if it was somewhat smaller though...
Any idea how long we will have for root? as this is kinda essential (and I know OP was always kinda very good for modding community)
I just placed an order for the OP9 and it said free z buds but when I checked out, it didn't show on order confirmation.
Thought maybe you had to add them to the cart as well and the discount will be at check out but did that and it wasn't showing either. Talked to customer service and they said free gifts are not available and in stock?

I just checked their online store and you need to select the free gift in the cart before checkout. On that screen, it shows "out of stock". That is pretty lame!
Have 2 OP9 coming. I am upgrading from 6T and she from 7. I am perpetually disappointed by Google Pixel series and the 5 is the worst. I keep hoping they remember what made Nexus phones great. Oneplus continues to be the closest to what Nexus experience was.
We both did get the OP buds free. And we got 110-140 for our old phones. I got education discount. Not bad deal for me to get the OP9
I may be in minority but I never liked phone camera pics. They always look fake to me because of colors. I always was dissapointed by green of vegetation and how bright red people's skin are. Call Hasselblad color calibration boring but its a huge relief to me pics won't make everthing look plastic.
Do think its weird they added a monochrome sensor when any software can do that just as well. Why they didn't use a telefoto instead on the 9 is baffling. I would bet at least 80% of users will never use it after testing it.
I am disappointed they didn't go with the rear hardware fingerprint like the Nord. I have problems with 6T fingerprint reader. I really hope OP9 will be vastly imoroved.

I don't understand people who upgrade from one series to the next or why anyone would expect it to have enough tech advancements to make it worth it.
Instead considering how late the 8T release was, I would have waited for OP9.
But to each their own, but amazed you are even looking at phones considering my guess you have had the 8T less than 6 months.
But I agree Oneplus should have spent more time on the hardware, and software than with the gimmick collaboration with Hassleblad that didn't really happen.
- Would have been nice is Hassleblad actually had something to do with the hardware, cameras etc.
- Would have been nice if Hassleblad influence was consistent with all cameras including front but seems we will have color shifts among all the cameras. Kinda defeats the whole collab for Hassleblad natural color tech.
