Complete dark UI on non-rooted phone? - OnePlus 7 Pro Questions & Answers

Normally I unlock the bootloader within minutes of receiving a new OP phone, but given that the Netflix quality takes a huge hit, I've been holding off on doing it this time.
Anyway, I don't miss root that much except for being able to get a system wide dark theme. OP seems to only have done the job about 70% as notifications still show in horrible white. I'm baffled why they're not providing a full dark theme, especially now that OneUI has it. Is there a way to get full dark theme without root?

Not really, Substratum on Pie needs root.

Try looking through settings on apps, a lot of them are already adding dark mode, I'm guessing a lot more will do so when Android Q comes out.

No AOSP yet?

Kinda disappointed there's no Pixel love, any devs out there looking to make an AOSP ROM?
Honestly, is there even much reason to when stock is so good?

To my knowledge they haven't released the source code yet for AOSP to be built off of.

The reason is simple. No carrier Bloat!!!
I'm sure it will come with time.. I'm just putting it out there ? no disrespect meant in anyway.

If you put an active Verizon sim in any pixel it will install like 3 apps. No big deal at all they can all be uninstalled but for some reason people think it's a huge deal lol

The Verizon apps are always there just deactivated. Verizon sim just lets the apps show up in your app drawer. Also the Verizon apps are always running in the background. Don't know why; I don't even have a Verizon sim in my phone but there they are.

Where are these apps?
Edit: there are no hidden disabled apps at all. They do not come installed on the phone. They get installed during setup if you have a Verizon sim card in and sign into a good account in the setup. I've had two pixels and done at least 10 factory resets and flashed full factory images. I've never had one of those apps get installed

hi,
technically, u can build a working aosp 7.1.1 Rom for the pixel now, but its still a bit rough around the edges... I've already done it a couple of times. it comes with a few caveats though, by default its setup to use google's prebuilt kernel in the build, opengapps wont install without patching aosp and the build.prop in /vendor needs to be adjusted to match the fingerprint in /system to avoid an error on boot... all of these things are trivially fixable, but pixel on aosp isn't ready for primetime yet, Imho...
the stock Rom is much much better... I think until cyanogenmod and other Roms get working builds out, idk there's any compelling reason to switch to aosp....
lastly, idk aosp builds would be as fast ot optimized, im not sure how google's internal toolchain differs; are they using sdclang? are there optimizations in art, bionics, etc that haven't hit aosp yet? etc, etc
I too am keeping an eye on the custom ROM scene. I've always preferred the "lack" of carrier bloat, etc. Being a tester for some time has taught me much. Since the demise of my last device I am forced to take a break.

I've been using substratum but just for theming the navbar on stock/pixel rom.... Obviously, if you try to theme systemui you will get a bootloop though (as expected. lol)... On top of that, I did also play with theming individual apps, mainly phone and google play which both worked, with the particular theme that I was using...
Theming would be nice on stock, it's too bad that google ripped out the dark theme that was in the N previews, I would have been happy with that, myself.
I think I'm most looking forward to the extra features that get baked into custom AOSP Roms and the full substratum support. I'm not a big fan CyanogenMod, but I do try them out from time to time. Always seem to go back to AOSP tho.

ya, I've contributed some patches to CM - but since getting the Pixel, I'm fairly happy with Stock. There are only a few features that I miss in CM that aren't available on the Pixel and even when I was using CM on my s5 - I always had to rip out a number of CM's features; all of the CMstats (analytics stuff), a number of their apps + adding my own keys since it is insecure (and arguably quite silly) to be using public known keys on ROMs (although, afaict - many third-party roms tend to do that.).
I'm thinking about rolling my own AOSP for Pixel -> pulling in only the features that I want, most of which I have patches for and only a few bits would need to be tracked down that I don't have. not hard to find though... Now that TWRP (RC1) can actually restore backups I can start actually looking at playing with AOSP without losing my stock rom that is already setup.

Just gor my honor 8 phone today, great hardware but the GUI is ....

Any tip for a more clean userinterface and better costumization options.... i dont wan't animations, flashing, sounds, blinks and all bells and wissels everywhere and no whay to get rid of it.. i want a nice clean android the don't use 80% of battery and perfomance on useless ****.

@parra
You should've bought another device.
There are sounds and animations by default in cyanogenmod too, as on any other smartphone.
Latest cyanogenmod 14.1 (lineageos) doesn't even have support for theming yet.
That's everyone's issue with emui. Use these theme in this thread. Download and change .Zip to .Get then put them in local > theme
Open themes app and apply
Has no effect on location of buttons and layout
The sounds and animations are possible to be disable in every ROM! And they come active by default in every ROM!
So that's a "no-question"
The performance of the device, by default, is very good and you shouldn't have complains on that, specially if you come from an older device.
The battery is also pretty good, normally it lasts me a full day with some heavy use (not a lot of gaming, but there is no phone in the market that lasts long playing games!)
Besides the nice battery, the fast charge is great and very usefull!
But indeed, if you like to try and change ROM's, you bought the wrong device!
wait for emui5, you will love it..

Here is what I have to like about EMUI. While it is customized over stock android, it is also optimized very nicely to work with the Kirin processors and not to mention the dual-lens camera. From my experience, it is better than TouchWiz as TouchWiz gets slow as usage increases while EMUI is fantastic so far for me.
The sounds and personalization is in every stock ROM. If you wanted clean android, then you may have to pick Pixel but then again, Google themselves have said they are using a customized version of android in Pixel unlike Nexus. Again, that is a good thing as that helps OEMs (even Google) to optimize for the device.

Three thing I don't like about EMUI 4 is the notification shade, non sensical setting menu and no app drawer.
Luckyly I just got EMUI 5. It has nougat style notification, app drawer option and better setting menu. Last one still bugs me a little as a few setting still hidden under pile of menu.

EMUI 5, saved the day, it a realy nice android phone without the need for unlocking and rooting just to be able to use it. ill stick with the EMUI5 for now and use a samsung s5 and virtual machines in vs to run code. nice to have a phone thats actually a phone for a time and not a android andset thar sometimes can be used for voicecalls like it usualy endsup when tje modding goes overboard.

Thanks for the post. I'm giving the app a go, and so far, it works well. I have a question regarding app elements, and I was wondering if anyone has any tips. I'm going with a black theme, and when I apply it, there are a few elements in a couple of apps that are turning out all black. One is calculator. The numbers are fine, but the symbol keys are all blacked out, making them invisible. The second is dialer. Everything looks alright, except for the FAB for the number pad. It's all black.
For primary color, I used #000000, and for accent, I used #ffffff. Am I doing this right?
Thanks for any help.
EDIT: Figured it out. I had to change the primary color from black to something else.
Thanks for the post. I have been looking at a way to theme it more than just Samsung Themes let's you and I have been trying to get fonts and this does it all! J know substraum could to but I always had bad luck with it. We will see how stable this is but I feel like it is going to be just fine. I even decided to do the donate version to support the developers. Thanks again

Substratum SUCKS. When I used it on Nougat it drained the **** outta my battery. Now that it's on Oreo, they made a new app "Andromeda" and wanna charge people $$$ again just for an update. RIDICULOUS TRASH!

In trying to use Substranium on Oreo and isn't working very well. Disappointed for sure. Hopefully the $2 I spent will fix the bugs
Sent from my SM-G955U1 using Tapatalk
The only reason I chose to go with this app as opposed to Substratum is because the bar for entry with this app is really low, comparatively. I have an S8 Active which is not rooted (nor am I planning to root). This means I have to download Andromeda ($2) and the desktop script in order to get Substratum to work. And I have no guarantee that it will work well. I have to pay $2 to find out, and then request a refund if it doesn't. With this app, I download one app, no additional app(s) to install, and no desktop script to run after every reboot. Plus, I don't have to deal with paying, only to request a refund later if things don't work out.
It may not be as pretty, but it's functional for my needs.
After oreo substratum and andromeda aren't working on my note 8 so I tried this app again after months of not using it. Its come a long way. I freaking love being able to do ANY color notifications I want with ANY color text! I don't think people realize what this app can do now. I see people that basically just want black notifications with white text so it can be easily read. In my opinion it blows substratum out of the water even when I did have it working on nougat. This may be my favorite app ever.
So this is just a Trial app and you have to pay to unlock all features? And I think its not fully compatible with OREO yet.

Oreo compatible. Is not a trial, it has features that require a donation but it's functional without those couple of options. Also it s a trail breaker built in. So themes will stick without messing with disabling anything.

Substratum can't do notifications like this that I know of. That's the main reason this app gets me. Notifications anyway you want them. Not just black or white.

See, if you had the first clue what you were taking about, or even a general idea how any of this worked, you would realize how misinformed and silly you sound.
First of all, substratum did not "drain the **** out of" your battery. That is physically impossible, as there are no running services involved outside of the brief part where you use the app to install the theme. Nothing running means no battery drain. Computers are smart enough to change some colors and shapes on the screen without taxing a 3,000mah battery and an over 1ghz processor. Dont blame substratum because your system was screwed up and needed a factory reset.
Secondly, since you obviously have no clue how any of this works im in a good mood today so I'll explain it to you. Forgive the length, but there is a lot that appatrently needs explaining lol.
First, substratum isn't "charging people for an update." samsung oreo has a COMPLETELY DIFFERENT theme engine than samsung nougat. Why is this the case? Because with nougat samsung, in their oh so excellent wisdom completely ripped out and replaced the already existing theme engine in stock android with their own monstrosity. Why they did this is anyone's guess, but the answers definitely wont include words like "compatibility" or "logic", but it broke existing nougat theming. Given that the substratum app is basically a "theme compiler" app that builds layers used by the os, a substratum dev team figured out that they could compile substratum theme manifests into the magic proprietary samsung hybrid-engine tire fire that is the touchwiz nougat theme system. So they did, and it works. It doesn't allow native drop in of any configuration of system themes for aosp to the completely different tw versions, but it works, and works well provided someone has actually designed the theme layers with substratum in mind. At first those were few and far between and i too was frustrated at looking at countless themes on play store that wouldn't work on my phone, but now there are numerous beautiful options for the s8 and s8+. I count 21 different themes installed on my phone now, and i have a lot of them but not all.
After this substratum implemented theming for oreo, for which the entire ecosystem had finally solidified around the aosp theming engined (called OMS). They realized that with an app similar, BUT COMPLETELY DIFFERENT TO like what they had done for samsung, they could open theming up to all standard oreo devices. So they did, and it works, except for that you have to grant privileges via adb to make changes without root which dont persist across reboot (this would be googles fault), but it allows the entire ecosystem to use native theming, so Yay.
Come several months later, and oreo betas finally appear. As devs look at them to see what changes to sungstratum (the addon for samsung nougat) would be necessary, low and behold they find that samsung has apparently seen the error of their ways and left the oreo OMS theme system (almost) entirely intact! This is great news everyone thinks, because now even one off custom samsung devices can use the same thing everyone else does, and they're well be true interoperability across all of the Google ecosystem. Sounds great right? Except a handful of over opinionated under informed samsung users see this as not not upporting the substratum theme app on oreo, despite the fact that 1) absolutely zero off the code was compatible, 2) they already have an app on the play store that everyone else uses, so keeping a separate one made literally no sense, and 3) it was SAMSUNG who is responsible for all of this!
So if you want to be mad at someone, be mad at samsung. They are the ones who changed everything and screwed everyone using theming not their own.
Ot, yoy can not be angry for having to spend a whole $2 on the Andromeda app because you CHOOSE not to root (you don't need Andromeda if you have root access) and appreciate the fact that leas than a cup of coffee or less than your weekly allowance you can have a vast array of gorgeous themes to use on your $800 oreo device that you can use without theme killer hacks, or dealing with knox. Or, you can just do a little reading about the systems you have such underinformed opinions on, root your device and get this for free as well as a ton of other awrsome possibilities. When youve done a little homework and are to root, do a xda search for my nick with "rom" on the end to get started ?️.

Impressions so far:
- scrolling is noticably smoother, whether it's web pages or news content on the glauncher.
- battery seems to be better than Pie. The standby is definitely better, but I should note that I used a battery recalibration app right after updating (for the first time).
- the device seems to stay cooler under normal load. For whatever reason, it got hot doing some basic things in Pie and the battery life drained quickly.
- no bugs so far, all of my apps still work from what I can tell. Surprisingly stable for a first preview.

Enable: adb shell settings put secure ui_night_mode 2
Disable: adb shell settings put secure ui_night_mode 1
For now toggle is missing
May be 3 for gray ?
Dark mode is not worth yet. Cant use Google photos. And maybe few other apps which are not discovered yet .
Try battery saver dark mode and check if you can live with google photos (side menu, etc)
If you can then go for it.
Otherwise not even a single crash yet on android Q beta q. Its a good experience so far.
Can be used as Daily driver.

No not your device..., It freezes sometimes like once in a day but see its just a beta 1 i tend to ignore that 1 time a day thing.
And if you think its too buggy then try a clean flash or formatting your device once. It helps.

In the description of the app I read custom 10, I thought it's okay, but not on this that I use I really like that it rounds the corners more, I did not find any tweak for that.
Dumb question: does this break safetynet if you use Magisk hide? This looks great, but I use Google pay and company email every day and both rely on safetynet

I think it was made with oos in mind. I just use the qs tiles and navbar while using swift installer for the colors.

Probably not worth the risk. Google hide seems to work for me but I don't use any apps that really interfere with safetynet. Keep your job and stay unrooted.
If you can deal with the possible consequences and just want to give it a try, I've personally never had an app fail due to magisk. Hide has worked well for me.

This isn't perfect but pretty damn close - outline is my favorite subs theme, but this is a close second. Since my favorite doesn't work on OOS 10, I've been using this theme. Didn't see it in the forum so I figured I'd share it.

If you like outline the best (mine as well) the same dev just pushed a new theme called DARQ and it's dark outlined along with gradients like LIV. It's freaking amazing!!
