15gb used for system apps? - Google Pixel 3a Questions & Answers

This cant be right surely?
None of the stock apps even add up to 15gb in my app settings. Anyway I can remove some without root? Waiting for twrp before I mess with this phone

My system apps say they're taking up 1.1. Somethings off there. Probably can't remove them without root if they're in /system.

EDIT: The right and wrong info was reported in my post. It's my Z3Play that shows 13 GB. I know it's apple/oranges, but my Pixel 3a shows 1.1 GB. N5X shows 6.4 GB.
Apologies. This can happen when spending too much time involved with another device (MOTO Z3 Play). Being old doesn't help, either ?.

Even 13gb. The apps dont add up to that unless theres a 8gb hidden app :/

Can you provide a screen cap of what you're seeing? She'd some light on where your system is saying "system apps using up 15Gb." Pie system files can add up to 16 or more GB. I do know LOS pie is about 16Gb for all system files

What happens when you tap "other apps" and use the menu option "show system"? It should sort by highest memory usage first.

I think I see the issue. It seems it is more of a space reporting error. A: it is odd system is only 1.1 GB. Attached is from LOS on a different phone. Most of the apps in your image don't show up for me because your space reporting is showing the files as apps instead of normal system stuff.

same issue here. the numbers don't even add up what is this bull****.
probably gonna return the phone. the breakdown's even more wack

You guys sure about that? I think it's telling you how much space each app is consuming for its data storage, NOT how much room the app itself (APK) occupies.
Apps require storage space beyond the app itself.

If you return your phone over something as petty as this, I can only wonder how many times you've returned iPhones.

Yes, seems it is reporting something. The term storage in the screenshot implies what you state. Honestly, the system partiton is usually 16Gb or larger, so system apps "using 15Gb" could just be the remainder of the /system partiton. Android has to report that data as not user accessible. 1Gb and 15 GB does equal the system partition size of most P smart phones. I haven't bought my 3a yet, but will have one in a month to verify partitions.

It seems either way it is still an error as it should report that figure in system amd not apps.

Alright so this is interesting -- I just checked out my /system size in Root Explorer, and it's currently at 3.06GB.
Other Apps current size in settings? 18GB. That's 3GB over the 15 everyone sees. So the question is, where the heck is the 15GB coming from?

[Q] Will future versions of the Android OS fix this blasted "out of space" problem?

[Q] Will future versions of the Android OS fix this blasted "out of space" problem?
So I have been an avid fan of Google for many, many years. I was looking forward to the Google phone before any Android details came out. So I naturally jumped at the chance to own one. But lately, I'm starting to have a change of heart. These constant out of space warnings are really getting annoying.
So much in fact, I don't know that I want my next phone to be an Android device sadly. I really want to want another one. But this experience is starting to sour my taste for them.
I currently run a rooted (virtuous) Dinc. I have gotten the out of space notification many, many times. I have now started to get it again after installing the Google Music app after being invited into the beta. I have removed about 15 programs, but I still only have about 17MB free on that stupid 149MB partition!
This is beyond annoying. If the phone has something like 8GB of internal memory, why can't I use it? Why can't the apps install there? Why limit this massive amount of storage to a measly 150MB? What year is this, 1995?
I know I'm preaching to the choir here, but I am fed up. I don't know what else to do here and I'm ready to walk away. Someone please tell me that Google has saw the light and is going to fix this glaring bug of theirs in Gingerbread or Ice Cream Sandwich!
Why did you create a partition so small? You should create a larger partition to prevent these notifications so often since you'll have more space and use up the extra space not being used. Also, it's not the Android OS's fault that your phone has a small partition made. Since the partition is so small, and you have hardly any memory left (17mb) then it's just one of the phone's functions to notify you about this which should be a good thing to let you know.

Android doesn't just make partitions by itself. Maybe the rom you have did that. try getting a new rom because this is not normal.

Wrong. At least on the HTC Droid Incredible, ROM's have a standard 150 megabyte \data\data partition. For either odexed or deodexed ROM's space is taken in that partition by pretty much every installed application. I've seen contacts hog nearly 70 megabytes of that partition for some handsets, and Sense takes a lot of it, too. Odexed ROM's allegedly require less of the space.
I've run several Froyo ROM's and they all have that limitation. I cannot speak for AOSP ROM's, only Sense ROM's.
There is an app which I have used (but don't seem to be able to find in the Market any more, and the dev isn't responding to PM's here at xda, but I digress) called NotEnoughSpace which allows some portions of the contents to be shifted elsewhere. I found it was very helpful when I was on Froyo, but it does not appear to work on GingerSense. On the other hand, the partition appears to be bigger in GingerSense. The flip side is that the GingerSense ROM's are so fat, there's less RAM available for applications to run.
Pick your poison. I agree it's a stupid limitation that somebody should figure out a way to fix.

Yes, thanks for explaining that much better than I could!
I do have NotEnoughSpace and don't use it for that purpose anymore. I just use it to see how much space I have available and to clean up the dalvik cache. When I was using it to get more space, my apps kept disappearing on me and I would have to re-install them constantly!
is this just a droid problem? i have an epic 4g and it allows me to use the entire 485mb for app storage. what about an apps to sd option? i know at least half of my apps have the option of being stored on the sd card. just wondering.

This does not make any sense. If an app is moved to the SD Card, the space it took up on the device (some if not all) should be gained back since it's not there any longer. Whenever I move an app to the SD Card, I get back my space. There really must be something wrong with your rom/phone.
You sir have alot of apps then.

The small internal Storage is a massive problem. I agree to you.
But I know there are several ways to fix this. What I don't know is how...
There are several ROMs who support different kinds of app2sd scripts so you get more 'virtual' internal storage on the sd card.
As you can see on the pictures attached i have approx. 550 mb free internal storage but more than 40 apps that could be pushed to sd.
To get this it is necessary to re-partition your sd-card and install the correct scripts.
Unfortunately, as i said, i'm not able to tell you exactly how to get this work. I just followed a step-by-step guide somwhere in this forum.
The ROM i use, uses D2SD automatically, if the SD-card is partitioned the right way.
I'm sure you will find something that fits to the ROM you use.

I've used the app2sd and notenoughspace programs in the past, but it seems they have done more harm than good. Apps would stop working. They would disappear completely. The system would crash, etc. I kinda gave up hope on using those approaches.
I was hoping the Google Android team would wake up and just fix this instead of us paying users have to perform work-arounds just to use our devices.

But, of course you are right, i can't understand why they don't give us a GB or so as internal storage either.

Try using a cleaner ROM for your DInc (ie "stock Android"- no Sense UI). I just got a DInc yesterday, switching from an Aria. Did a factory wipe, rooted, and installed the CM7 nightly 100. I believe I currently have s2e on my 8gb MicroSD (just swapped it from my Aria, which had s2e and CM7). Anyway, I have 118MB used, 630MB free internal storage space for apps. This clearly isn't a Google/Android problem. Could be an HTC Sense problem, I suppose.
edit: My Aria even has 185MB available for apps. Not a huge amount, but considering it has a lot less internal space than a DInc, yeah, OP something is wrong.

[Q] Insufficient space - yet there is over 1GB available..

I tried updating an app last night on my tablet, actual app is Hill Climb.
In the play store I was getting insufficient space available when I tried to update it. I checked my storage and had almost 1.5GB availble. What's going on? No way is the update of that size..
Also I am running AOKB milestone 1 rom. I am also about to order myself a 32GB SD card.
But can someone tell me what's up with this insufficient space error I get? I tried rebooting and it didn't seem to help.

I've had that happen a couple of times with other apps. I think it's the app and not the tablet but I have no way to prove it. I don't remember the app I had that problem with but I also had plenty of space when it happened. I just tried installing Hill Climb and it installed without a hitch. FWIW, I've googled the problem and others have had the same problem.

Thanks! Well from what I saw was is that there is apparently some sort of 'partition' for APPS? Which is not related to your overall storage, so it could depleet itself pretty quick?
I just don't know how exactly one increases this APP partition or what can be done about it? Basically the 1GB I see is meant for music/photos/videos etc.. APP installs go on a different partition all together.
Any idea about this?
I had this issue the other day, I rebooted the tab and it went away.
Turns out there is an app called APP2SD that I guess takes care of this.. going to have to look into this and see what it does.

I couldn't get it to work on my tab. My Droid X & Droid Razor Maxx both have the option to move apps to the SD card under app settings. I don't know why the Tab doesn't.
Maybe because the card is actually shown as extsdcard and the internal memory is shown as sdcard.

What do you mean? I don't even have a SD card currently installed in the device..
In a file manager if you look under mnt in the root directory you'll see an sdcard, that's the internal memory. An SD card will show up as ExtSdCard
I think the Galaxy Tab memory structure is a unified "internal memory" area which is shared by both app installations and user data. There are no separate "app" and "user data" partitions, though there is of course a separate "system" partition.
Since App2SD works by moving files from the app partition to the data partition it has no relevant function on the Galaxy Tab.
I have no idea what causes the insufficient memory errors though. This is a common problem and the cause of much frustration for many users.

Definitely NOT "unified" there is a 2.8GB partition for installing the APP apk's into then there is the internal storage of 4.59 GB (which is most likely where the OP has the 1.5 GB free).
OP- go into your application manager under settings and look at the bottom for Device Memory, it should be x.x GB of 2.8 GB (on the 8 GB models) this is most likely the area that is low on storage, as I have added less the 100 MB of apps and I have 1.8 GB used of the 2.8 GB so I imagine if you install games and stuff it would fill up real quick.
I believe there is a thread about moving apps to the "SD card" (remember in android you have 2 "sdcards" first is labeled sdcard and is actually the internal storage and second is labeled extsdcard and is your removable microsd card if you use one).

[Q] Best solution for memory space problems?

Hey everyone.
So, I'm using Slim Bean (but it also happened in other ROMs) and eventually my phone starts complaining about short memory space. I have an ext3 partition and use Link2SD but for some reason, after some time it complains and I can't even update my apps. Which is quite frustrating... So this was probably already asked but anyway, what is the best way to avoid this and have no issues whatsoever? I have a Class 6 8 GB memory card, so there shouldn't be an issue for apps storage.

In link2sd settings, move all 3 i.e. app, dex files and libraries to sdcard
Also, sometimes apps cache things on the system memory. You can find apps that help you clear up those caches and free up some space. Advance Mobile Care is a decent one that I've used.
ive also freed up 20-40mb just by clearing all mms sms messages.

Storage Disparity

I saw this on my 6T. The phone shows one storage stat but my widget and Windows PC is showing a different storage stat. Which one is correct and why are these numbers different? I never saw this on any other phone. Knowing exactly how much storage you have on your phone is pretty important to me. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.
The Rom memory is fragmented in several partitions. windows only sees the one available to store files while the phone takes other partitions into account. Like system partition etc ..

Question System app "Media Storage" seemingly duplicating all of "media" files

I have a ROG 5 Tencent version with Global ROM, .86 build.
Found out that my storage was for some reason almost full. Checked on Android's storage manager and found that System App "Media Storage" is taking up 36.2GB of space. Also checked with DiskUsage, and it seems this "Media Storage" is exactly the same amount as all data under "media", which would be all videos and downloads (all non-app files). So it seems for some reason the data is being duplicated.
Upon research, I found two things:
1. This also happened to OnePlus users, and apparently the data isn't actually duplicated in Media Storage; it's just incorrectly displayed, and you can go above the displayed storage limit. If this is what is also happening, it's still a problem for me because if I try to sync data from my computer, it'll stop transferring because it'll detect my phone as full.
2. Happened to some users with WhatsApp. Doesn't apply to me because I don't have WhatsApp, nor have I ever installed it on this device.
The "Clear Storage" & "Clear Cache" options for Media Storage are also greyed out, so I have no clue how to proceed.
Anyone else run into this problem? Any solutions?
Edit: updated to .151, problem still exists.
Make sure all critical data is redundantly backed up.
Try force stopping the app. Still can't app clear its data?
Sync is so much easier but I always do cut/paste for backups... once bitten, twice shy.

Doesn't give me an option to force stop Media Storage.
Could it be an apk with System Administrator rights be locking it out?

Only apps with admin permissions are Find My Device, Nova7, Outlook. They are also all disabled.

I don't understand why it's locked down like that.
Is that normal for that device?
Make sure that under Settings -> Storage you don't have Storage manager enabled.
Media Storage isn't ACTUALLY taking up that space, though. You can't clear the data for it because it's technically not using it. It is just reporting how much data is taken up by media and the system incorrectly displays that as the amount of data used by the app.
If you look in Settings -> Storage and do the math on the totals, you'll find that the total doesn't match the one in the upper left. Taking Media Storage into consideration, I should be at 403 of 256 GB. Media Storage appears as 186 GB and my remaining storage is still 31 GB.

Hi! Quite late to the party, still posting just to ask if you found any solution to this "Media Storage" issue?
My OnePlus 9RT is having the same problem now. What is worst is it is not like just "incorrectly displayed" as some users said on Reddit, here and other forums. Recently my Media Storage size went up to 58Gb and then when I went to install Grid Autosport, which takes around 4Gb space, PlayStore showed me that I have to delete apps to make space for Grid!!! So, that means the Phone is reading this Media Storage app space, its not just a virtual/incorrectly displayed number!

I think you are confusing the words with a visual misrepresentation that can be ignored. As I posted last year, it means that media storage "thinks" the files are there and is telling the system that space is used, but the physical files don't exist. It is not that the space is actually available and it's being shown incorrectly. It's that the system is reserving that space for files that aren't present. If that weren't the case, then the answer would be simply to clean out your storage of any files you don't need and free up the space.

Which simply means what the OP posted. At the end of the day that space cannot be used and that's a problem. Technically you are correct but you have killed the discussion on this thread by twisting it into another direction. So let me try to bring it back.
Mediastorage is a problem! It is causing the system to reserve space unnecessarily. For every 1 GB that I consume, mediastorage consumes and equal amount of space (at least from the OS's POV).
@twistedumbrella Stop saying that it is a "visual representation". And you're 100% wrong. The answer isn't to clean out our own files. The answer is to stop mediastorage from causing the OS to reserve space unnecessarily.

Interesting. This problem is being seen on other makes as well. May be related to the OS version or the media storage app; they're all might be using the same open source code.
Or both together. Scoped storage sucks... just a guess.
Back up all critical data redundantly first then play with it to try to find the app(s) responsible as in indicated in the link above. Do some more Google searches for the same issue, it doesn't have to be your exact make/model neccesarily to apply.
Is it a clean load loaded after firmware upgrades? Was it hand loaded rather than a automated transfer app like Samsung's SmartSwitch? These apps are known troublemakers when going cross device or platform.
Try to develop a work around... more fun times with Android.
Play with it.
Got my Oneplus 9 same problem with os11. maybe only google can resolve this issue?
Were you able to fix or found a fix on this, i just checked mine and this "Media" app taking a lot of storage on my Xiaomi 11t pro
