Successor of nexus (5) 2017

My faithful nexus have served me well but it needs to be replaced soon
What phone is the spiritual successor of the nexus line with the following characteristics:
Many developers for the phone. (AOSP port within weeks without official support)
5-6 inch
<500$
Is it correct that most devs wants snapdragon?
I see OnePlus as a candidate, is there more not counting Pixel.

Nothing stands out to me as outstanding this year. I am considering a LG G5

OnePlus 3 would be your best bet for sure.

I think the Xiaomi 5s is the best option.

I know you're probably dismissing the Pixel because of the price, but it really is a great phone. My sister just got one on Sunday since her S3 died a horrible death (eMMC card gave in for some unknown reason). The ad really wasn't lying with regard to having a great camera and charging extremely quickly (she got it at around 85% battery mid-Sunday and didn't have to charge it until 6 PM on Monday).

Yeah you're stuck in a sort of dead period between now and Mobile World Congress in Feb when the next wave of phone announcements come. As ppl have said, OnePlus3 (or rumoured OnePplus3T is your best bet in the flagship-specs-for-cheap segment. Mi5 or Mi5S would be the other option - maybe slightly prettier but bit more of a hassle to unlock and likely to have less good custom ROM support than the OnePlus.
Other than that wait til Feb/Mar for the next wave. In the meantime you could pick up a low end $150 device (take your pick of the Chinese vendors - I use a RedMi3) to tide you over and then use it as a backup phone?

I had a look at mi5 page here at xda and saw that it hasen't got nougat yet so that's disqualifying.
Maybe I should formulate the question as: What brand do you think that CM,AOKP etc. will develop mainly on?

Even i have the same thoughts as yours and this is what I planned to do when im switching my Nexus 5.
- Look for a spiritual replacement: Right now I can only see One plus 3, which gives good hardware and dev support for under $500. Other phones are Axon 7 and Zen Phone Deluxe. They have good hardware but you need to research on the development part. Pixel is a good phone but not worth the price and im against such products.
- Look for a cheaper phone till I find a spiritual replacement: Xiaomi products are really good for $200. If you get bored in a year or so, can replace it with another cheaper phone till you find the replacement. Few Xiaomi phones have AOSP rom's which can be installed. I have not come across any other $200 phone with good hardware and little bit of dev support. One of the phones around $200 is Redmi Note 3. Pixel will be the leading brand open platforms develop on!
Otherwise OnePlus is probably a good bet. I heard from someone that many googlers use them now for all the reasons discussed above.
Otherwise your best bet for support is the device which has the largest installed base in the non-Chinese speaking world. Largest installed base = more users = (all things equal) more devs. Maybe you can get a Samsung device for cheap!!

no custom oreo rom

Coming from the Nexus 5x and there are many Oreo roms..so i was wondering why there ist noch Oreo Rom for the Pixel..? And dont get me wrong..i have no problem with that..Just wonderering

Wow..never was thinking that root and other stuff will be so complicated as on an iPhone to get it Jailbreaked

Root is no problem, fastboot boot to TWRP and install it.

This phone is much more challenging than other handsets due to the fact Google has implemented dual booting partitions. It also seems they aren't as interested in the developer community now that they are making their own phones and not just putting out an OS for Android. So, this handset isn't as friendly for devs, except for those who are really into masochistic behavior (self punishment). If you're looking for a really robust developer community you probably should stick to Samsung or a few other manufacturers and avoid Google for the foreseeable future.

Just my thoughts.
Really unbelievable that there are no ROMs due to those issues.

I'm thinking of selling my pixel and getting a oneplus 5, or waiting to see how the modding scene evolves for the razor phone.
Truly disappointed the pixel line didn't follow on from nexus devices.

Thought of getting nexus 6p,but bought the pixel thinking that it would get more development..

Really funny how things have changed. It wasn't that long ago that if you wanted a phone that was easy to root, and had tons of developers, with tons of ROM options, you got a Nexus. Now that the Pixels are here, it's just the opposite.

The only saving grace is Google will continue supporting the pixel until October 2019 so I'm not going to be stranded with a phone I can't update.

Got the XL as a warranty replacement for my almost 2 year old 6P that had battery dying issues.
I do like the XL, have it rooted with Magisk, just waiting for Pure Nexus. If revo gets Xposed working Oreo, may not go custom rom at all.

bootloader unlock and custom kernel if required for some tweaks, however
pure android is actually freaking lovely

Quite a few devices are getting both official and unofficial 8.0 updates. As far as 8.1 I'm pretty sure it's still in beta so it's only available for the Google family of devices as there is no way to look into the source of the beta and try to compile it for other phones.

There are more issues than the A/B partition scheme that these phones have:
1) They are extremely expensive so there were not too many people who bought them in the first place
2) There are a lot of people and devs who have sold their Pixels for Pixel 2's
3) Project Treble which sounded like a good idea has actually caused more problems for this phone for custom development, which did not affect any Nexus models. All the kinks related to this need to be worked out too as it is a new issue as of Oreo

How would you rate the Pixel against the Nexus 6P?
Is it worth the upgrade?
I got a broken 6P for 80€ and a broken Pixel for 180€
Both were replaced (Nexus against Nexus, cause it was bought from 3rd party and not Google).
Nexus would sell for 250€, Pixel for 400€

I miss my 6P, thought it was an awesome phone but the battery issue SOT of 2 hours after 2 years was killing me. Got the XL as a warranty replacement for virtually nothing, so it was a win-win.
Once the custom roms roll out, it will rival or exceed the 6P, I have no doubt.

LineageOS drops official support due to inactive maintainers for Moto X Style/Pure alongside other Motorolas (such as Moto Z2 and G4) and other devices as well (most prominently Galaxy Note 3 and 8, HTC 10, Oneplus X, LG G3, Nexus 7 2013, several LG GPads and the recently released Xiaomi Redmi Note 5).

Losing LineageOS for it is a great loss! I wish I had more time on my hands to help support this great device.

I use LineageOS in combination with MicroG, so yes! it's a big loss. But I hope I can still use this phone for 2 more years at least. I've planned to get a new mobile contract in 3 months. This time without a smartphone. Next will be a Copperhead Pixel 2 or, if it's available in the future, a Copperhead Pixel 3.

That's very interesting. I wonder how it is living with a phone with Copperhead OS and/or F-droid apps only.
Some people say that avoiding Google services and using F-droid instead in a standard ROM like Lineage gives you an extra hour of screen on time and improved idle power consumption, but information online is scarce about that particular subject. Most people use F-droid just to avoid Google for privacy reasons.

Considering the phone release date was over 3 years ago, I'm not too surprised that ROM development is tapering off at this point. Many users have switched to new devices. The fact that a reliable battery replacement has been so hard to find until recently helped drive more people away. I can't blame devs for moving on.

Legendary phone stands on its own
Thankfully, the stock Rom on this phone is good enough that there's really no need for these. Still, it's better to have more choices than to have fewer choices, so it will be a bit of a hypothetical bummer to one of the greatest smartphones ever.

Just go to the Post below for more info. Ifixit is involved with it so I would imagine it is legit. They can sell just the battery or the entire kit.
I personally got mine off ebay and got lucky. 7+ months and still going strong.

lmao, it never was... Very bad cpu with throttling issues, weak battery, no official batteries for replacement, poor official and unoficial support, poor build quality and no fingerprint scaner lol

Custom ROM support

I'm interested in this phone and wondering what custom ROM support may be like for the device? I had a quick look at the pixel 4 and it's not massively supported but I don't really know how recent or popular it is?
I'm currently using a Xiaomi mi9t with pixel experience+. I know the p4a will be similar if not the same minus the additional features added in the pe+ version, which I quite like tbh.
I know it's early days and probably most can't even get their hands on the phone yet but curious what you might expect based on previous pixel devices?

I would also be interested in this. The 4a's "stock" Android is fine, but there are very few customization options. For example, the setting to hide specific Satus Bar icons is available in Settings but greyed out and inaccessible. I would really love to install LineageOS on this device.
As for popularity, the Pixel 4 was expensive and had poor battery life, so I don't think it had many adopters. The 4a on the otherhand is a steal at $350 and in a post-COVID world, I can see many people who need a new device going for the budget option. I really hope this helps us build a large development community

I plan on staying stock for a few weeks, but rooting and flashing roms is a weekly thing for me. I'm sure there will be plenty fairly quickly. Our codename is "sunfish", right? Much better than my current dumpling.

I would be super shocked if this device does not get any rom support as popular as it is. I believe a couple of devs have said they will start developing roms.

I have an idea for an app, LG is already basically doing this with their dual screen phones. Essentially, they use an accessory screen / case combo, that connects the main phone and shares its screen to the secondary screen built within the case.
My idea would be an app that is installed on two android smartphones. One would be the main phone and the other would be used as the extended screen.
I have a oneplus 8 5G from t-mobile and the other is the Google pixel XL. I can run android 10 on both, and once my bootloader is unlocked on my oneplus 8 I can actually have them both either running paranoid android quartz android 10 or the same lineage OS build. I don't think both devices being on the same exact OS would matter but I think it would help.
So my main phone the oneplus 8 would extend its screen to the Google pixel XL. Basically turning it into a dual screen smartphone. The benefit would be that the pixel is another full powerful Android smartphone and not simply a display. I think it would lag less and be able to use the Google pixel ram as well as oneplus ram and everything.
Apps would be able to split screen, and I would most likely 3D print some kind of custom case they both could fit in.
I would like to discuss the possibilities of this idea, the benefits, the roadblocks and problems likely to encounter, etc.

Honestly, it's a ridiculous idea. Put your time and effort into something more useful than this novel idea. I can see differences in hardware and kernel between the two devices being a major issue.

I wouldn't call it a novel idea seeing major company's are passing dial screens now as well as foldable devices. But I see where your coming from, making it actually work on 2 devices that might not be compatible, especially with the amount of different android devices out there would be very difficult.

Yes, that is true, but they aren't using two different devices or different hardware in the two "halves", they are using hardware and kernel that were specifically made to work with each other. That is why I mentioned that differences between hardware and kernel between devices would be a major problem. It is a completely different scenario when you are talking about using two devices that are completely different from each other.
