I searched the forums but couldn't find any answers. This is the first time I'm trying to root an android phone. Things are not going well..
I found a page in Indonesian with instruction on how to root my sister's Lenovo S890. My dad bought her one in China, we live in Europe.
We need to get all the Chinese stuff off and install a "regular" Android version with a normal marketplace (read: whatsapp and google and nothing blocked).

What are the steps? First you need to set up some files such as drivers are required to carry out the process of flashing, SP Flash Tool version 3.1222 or higher, because Lenny chipset MTK6577 S890, S890 and file TWRP to also file a Super User and Busybox will be pushed into the system through TWRP. All the files you can download from the following link:
1 Download Driver Lenovo : Extract file. rar it and then click Install_Driver.exe to install drivers into the system. Rather long process, just wait.
2 Download SP Flash Tool : The author gave the newer version, which v3.1224.01. .
3 Download Team Win Recovery Project : TWRP file is specific to the Lenovo S890, so do not try for another Android, although it also MediaTek chipset.
4 Download Super User and Busybox : Will we push into the system through TWRP custom recovery. Download and copy directly to SD Storage / Memory Cards-mu. Place it outside the / root folder or USB Storage Storage SD / USB storage from your Lenovo S890.
5 Download Data Repartition : This file is optional, just download and place it in the root folder Storage SD / USB Storage. Can later be used to repartition the internal memory is too small Lenovo S890. Author will explain at the bottom.

I first installed the Lenovo S890 drivers. Clicked "Install anyway" for everything and rebooted. No problems.
But when I connect the phone it's still complaining that it can't find drivers (and I can't find any official drivers on the Lenovo website either)?
I also installed the MT6577 USB VCOM drivers that I found here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2206421 (before I did this the SP Flash Tool did nothing).
I enabled USB Debugging mode on the phone, and took out the SIM, the SD card and the battery when I connect it to USB to the PC. I am running Win7x64.
Every time I try to run (step 2) SP Flash tool, it starts downloading fine, but then Win7 'spits out' the phone (I can hear the 'usb device disconnected' sound) and SP Flash Tool obviously stops working then and gives some error.
I think this is because the MediaTek MT6577 USB VCOM drivers somehow refuse to install correctly? It looks like rooting might go well once this driver thing is fixed?
When I force installation of the drivers I get a Code 10 error and a yellow triangle next to the Preloader and the MediaTEL Vcom something USB driver in Windows Device Manager. ( I searched the forums and didn't find a solution for this).
I forced installation by opening Device Manager, click Add, click Add Legacy Hardware - manual - choose the usb2ser_Win764.info file out of the MT6577 USB VCOM drivers folder

How do I stop Windows from ejecting the phone (force it to keep it connected as the MediaTek thingie that seems to work with SP Flash Tool?).
Or is there a better way to get an English Android version on this phone?
When I now try to boot the phone it says
tool dl image fail
uboot is blocking by dl info
Did I (soft)brick it??

Since this seems to be a less popular phone with very little support available - I'm giving up.
Spent 3 full days on this thing with no results, and I just read the GPS also won't work outside of China either.
Now all I need to do is figure out how to get it out of META mode or Factory mode, and get it to boot back into it's normal Chinese Android system.

Hi, I'm having a much similar problem, since I couldn't flash recovery with SP flash tool, the process was terminated unexpectedly showing error message s_ft_need_download_all_fail (4050), after a couple of days looking for a solution I decided to format the phone with SP Flash Tool, and it worked, right after I tried to flas recovery again...and it worked. I thought I had found the way but when I tried to boot the phone in recovery mode nothing happened, no matter what keys combination I use, how long I press them, the phone just won't react, it doesn't show anything on the screen.
I don't know if this was the logic step to follow, but if you want to try and discover what to do next, up to you, 4 hands are better than 2,maybe yuo find the solution.

There is no button combination to boot recovery, try droidgram-reboot on play store.

dumb as i am, i flashed a new Lenovo P780 with a ROM from needrom.com without making a backup first. Now i've lost the two IMEI-numbers, the Phone simply says the IMEI-numbers are invalid. One of the IMEI numbers is printed on the battery.
For all i know, the IMEI-numbers are stored in /data/nvram/md/NVRAM/NVD_IMEI/MP0B_001.
Is there any way to write a valid MPOB_001, so the Phone recognises a valid IMEI-number?
I already tried various solutions on the rooted Phone:
MobileUncle MTK Tools says AT commandline failed,
tried to echo a new IMEI via Terminal Emulator failed,
MTKdroidTools doesn't recognise the Phone,
various IMEI Generators for MTK 65xx i found in the net failed, alway gives an invalid MPOB_001 file.
As i said, the Phone is rooted, Processor is MTK 6589, and the Phone has two sim-slots, therefore two IMEI numbers.
Any help would be greatly appreciated.

One week after i brought my phone, I accidently formatted my device using sp flash tools and lost the IMEI/NVRAM. It has been a real pain for me to repair it because i was new to an mtk device. Finally figured out how to repair by doing many search. So I made this thread to share the working methods to help those people who are suffering from invalid IMEI
So let's start.
Always remember "Prevention is better than cure". If you are planning to flash a custom rom, First of all Backup your IMEI. Don't Trust that a custom ROM flash will not delete your IMEI number. because odds are it will. It's important to store your backup to external SD because some ROM flashing techniques will erase your internal SD. so the best way to keep your IMEI number is to take my advise and make a backup.

DISCLAIMER: Do not do try any of these methods unless your IMEI has been lost! Doing so may permanently corrupt your imei partition.
IMEI Backup & Restore Methods:
1. Mobile Uncle Tools:
1. Open the App,
2. Select IMEI BACKUP RESTORE (MTK)
3. Choose BACK UP TO SDCARD (MTK)
4. Reboot
>> (to restore, choose restore from sd card)
2. MTK Droid Tools [PC Required]:
1. Switch on the phone and connect it to pc.
2. Go to settings->about phone.
3. Tap build number for 7 times.
4. Go back and enter developers options, and check usb debugging on.
5. Start MTK Driod Tools and click root. grant root permission in phone.
6. Click IMEI/NVRAM and click backup or restore as required.
>> (to restore, choose the backup file from nvram backup folder)
Temporary IMEI Restore (without Backup):
(These are Temporary Methods, so you need to do this every time you upgrade Firmware, install a new rom, or doing a factory reset.)

2. Open App
3. Type both IMEI Numbers
4. Click "Apply new IMEIs"
5. Reboot

Hey Guys as u know imei fix with muai meta software guide is already given on first post of unite 2 thread .... So i don't need to guide here to all of you keep in mind before fix imei with muai meta please reset your phone otherwise it sometimes don't detect..
Here in this Guide i will describe how to fix NVRAM error and write serial number with sn Write Station tool
I have also unite 2 8gb model and i have tried it successfully on my lollipop unite 2 device if you are on kitkat may it will work but this guide is only for lollipop users :
steps:
Before starting please see if you have already installed mediatek usb vcom drivers which is needed for flash rom using sp flash tool.
1. First of all download sn write station tool v1.5.3--20121018. i test it with this version.
2. Now extract your stock rom.
3. Now run sn write station tool and select smartphone from platform drop-down option.
4.Select usb instead uart mode.
5. Now tick on sn and wifi only under write item section.
6. Now write your serial number of your device in sn textbox.
7. In wifi textbox write your wifi mac address without colon. after correct wifi address written a green tick will appear.
( To know your correct wifi address go to setting>wifi> option advance>MAC address>
here you will see your correct address write down on sn tool without colon. )
8. Now select db file from extracted rom. name of file is APDB_MT6582_S01_L0.MP2_W15.09
9. Now click on start.
10. Now tick usb debugging in device and switch off your device and connect to computer with battery.
11. in sn write tool it will show successful :good:
12. Sometimes sn write tool switch on your mobile in meta mode but don't write sn and wifi address. Just unplug your device and reconnect it with same condition in which you plup out your device..
if it is in on (boot logo) situation then connect it as it is. otherwise connect it again in switch off mode again.
13. Sn write tool do its work. after successful unplug your device and restart your phone.
This method is successfully tested by me. may be it will helpful to you.

I didnt have it right now. Don't know that where did i find those drivers. Search it in google. I will try to figure it out as i got some free time.

I tried this method but every time I tried, I was getting "Entre Meta Mode Failed" I am unable to understand why my device is not going into meta mode. I have written IMEIs and MAC IDs with this tool on Canvas HD, hell lot of time.
The process for Canvas HD is little different, I used to select both the database files, first "BPLGUInfoCustomAppSrcP_MT6589_S00_MOLY_WR8_W1248_MD_WG_MP_V6_P18" and then this one "APDB_MT6589_S01_MAIN2.1_W10.24" secondly I used to power on my device "Power On" msg was displayed on SN Write Tool.
I tried all possible scenario, selected only one database file, changed the sequence of selecting database files, tried to turn it off after hitting start but worked nothing for me.
When we select Database files the window opens twice, did you select same file both the times? And have you tried to write all the things together, means IMEIs, MAC ID of BT and MAC ID of Wifi in just one go?

Yes i select same file for twice name of file is given above in my post and i never try to write other things like bt address, imei same time but i want to say don't try to write bt address because it will show error every time when you try to write and i also want to say that imei number can be written with this tool but select only imei don't other things like sn number, wifi mac address.......etc. try one thing only at same time. means when you want to write imei then select only imei but you can choose sn and wifi mac address at same time it can be flashed successfully......

I got this issue while running on lolipop firmware, trying to write imei with my PC running Windows XP, but for kitkat, it works.. These applications didn't worked for me in Windows 8.1 and 10
Hi, I updated my unite 2 to lolipop and after that my phone cannot detect sim card. Later I formatted my rom, and installed kitkat rom, but now it showing that invalid imei .and also battery is draining too fastly .please help me sir. reply urgently.

Hi, I updated my unite 2 to lolipop and after that my phone cannot detect sim card. Later I formatted my rom, and installed kitkat rom, but now it showing that invalid imei .and also battery is draining too fastly .please help me sir. reply urgently.

Bro thanks for helping me. I hv one last question i hv nv ram.bin file of my stock rom ok but when i load scatter file in sp flash tool there is no option to flash nvram.bin if u try figure it out i will appreciate.

FIRST THINGS FIRST. DO IT WITHOUT FAIL
PLEASE KEEP A FACTORY IMAGE BACKUP OF YOUR WORKING PHONE BY USING SP FLASH TOOL. STORE IT ON A SEPARATE DRIVE OTHER
THAN PHONE MEMORY/PHONE SD CARD. PROCESS THIS ROM IMAGE WITH MTKDroid TOOL BEFORE DOING ANY KIND OF WRITE OPERATION ON YOUR PHONE
TAKE A BACKUP OF YOUR CONTACTS, MESSAGES, IMEI, PHOTOS/VIDEOS, PERSONAL STUFF, SETTINGS ETC AND STORE THEM ON YOUR DESKTOP/LAPTOP/EXTERNAL DRIVE
GENERALLY GOOD PRACTICE IS TO TAKE ALL SORT OF BACKUP FROM THE ACTUAL PHONE ITSELF BEFORE DOING ANY WRITE OPERATIONS.

IMPORTANT PREPARATION AND GROUND WORK
FIRST OF ALL HAVE LOADS OF PATIENCE. DO NOT HURRY IN TO DOING THINGS FAST AND REPENT LATER. DEVOTE LOTS OF TIME TO UNDERSTAND THE PROCESS
READ EVERYTHING AND WATCH ALL RELEVANT INTERNET VIDEOS FULLY, CAREFULLY AND PROPERLY.
DO NOT FORGET TO TAKE A COMPLETE FACTORY IMAGE BACKUP OF YOUR PHONE USING SP FLASH TOOL. PROCESS THE IMAGE WITH MTKDroid TOOL. THIS IS VERY IMPORTANT
1. Have a reliable PC or Laptop. I have rooted and updated custom recovery on my phone using Win 8.1 laptop.
Hence I would prefer a PC/Notebook with windows OS(7/8.1) installed. It is easier to find software and drivers for windows.
2. Connect your switched ON phone to PC and verify if it is detected properly by your PC.
You should be able to access the phone storage and SD card if any
3. Ensure your phone is always USB debugging mode enabled.
4. Use a tool like "usbdview" to clean up errant drivers first. Have a clean device manager at beginning.
5. Ensure you have installed proper ADB drivers. Check in device manager you should have something like "ADB interface" with no yellow triangle.
That means your drivers are properly installed. If finding drivers are difficult use PDAnet or search for universal ADB drivers and install them correctly
6. Preloader or VCOM drivers should be installed correctly. The one which worked perfectly for me was the one which I saw in You Tube by ITXTutor.
Search for "How to Install MTK Preloader 65xx Driver Correctly - Windows 8.1 64bit approved ! [HD]-PAxTCvRmlio" in You Tube.
Go Through the tutorial and download files from there. Do it exactly as it says in the tutorial.
[NOTE : IF YOUR ANTI VIRUS BLOCKS MTKDroid TOOL CREATE AN EXCEPTION]
7. Download MtkDroidTools-v2.5.3 tools on your PC. Once downloaded run the application as administrator. Switch ON your phone
Connect phone to PC. Take screen shot of MtkDroid tool application with your phone details. Create a scatter file and save it.
During this process MTKDroid showed only one error

FURTHER CREATES SOME PROBLEM DURING ROM IMAGE PROCESSING.]
8. Download SP Flash Tool v5.1352.01. Run the tool as administrator. Open the scatter file saved in previous step.
Go to Readback. Do a complete readback on phone. Start address always from 0x0000. Wait until READ back completes. It may take 15 to 30 minutes
and you end up with atleast 700MB size file.
My backup was 1 GB. Less than 700 MB means, there is some issue with read back. The factory image of kitkat which came as OTA was more than 700 MB.
Don't continue. Retry readback properly. You might have missed or incorrectly done some procedure(for e.g. wrong end address).
9. Once read back is complete, Run MtkDroidTools-v2.5.3 tools on your PC. Connect phone(switched on) to your PC.
Go to "root, backup, recovery" tab. Click on "To process ROM_ file from Flash Tool".
It will pop up asking to load the ROM image which you made in previous step.
Load that image. MTK should automatically start processing image.
At this point I got error as follows

MTKDroid TOOL will ask if you need to make a CWM recovery automatically, click no and one more window will pop up, press cancel.
[NOTE : EVEN IF YOU SELECT YES TO MAKE CWM RECOVERY, MTKDroid TOOL WILL THROW MORE ERROR AS COPIED BELOW.
IT WONT CREATE CWM RECOVERY IMAGE. HOWEVER PROCESS WILL COMPLETE]

Because of PMT mismatch error Flash tool will create two scatter files.
MT6589_Android_scatter_emmc.txt and

The entire processed ROM file will be kept in backups directory of MtkDroidTools directory. Ensure you make a copy of this for safe keeping. This

[WHY YOU NEED TO DO ALL THESE FIRST IS BECAUSE IF YOU BRICK YOUR PHONE, EVEN A SOFT BRICK, MTKDroid TOOL IS VERY MUCH USELESS.
THIS TOOL WORKS ONLY IF YOUR PHONE IS SWITCHED ON AND BOOTED TO HOMESCREEN. MTKDroid USES ADB DRIVERS TO CONNECT WITH PHONE AND NOT VCOM DRIVERS.
IF PHONE IS NOT DETECTED BY MTKDroid THEN PROCESSING ROM IMAGE WILL NOT BE POSSIBLE. THAT OPTION WILL BE DISABLED ON THE MTKDroid TOOL.
SO NO SCATTER FILES, NO RECOVERY, BOOT, PRELOADER IMAGES, ETC, OF YOUR PHONE. SO BE VERY CAREFUL]

NOW ACTUAL PROCESS OF ROOTING AND CUSTOM RECOVERY STARTS
FIRST THING YOU WILL HAVE TO TRY IS ROOT THE PHONE USING FREELY AVAILABLE TOOLS
1. I tried various methods of rooting but, not one worked on Lenovo P780.
framaroot, towelroot, iroot, root genius, geno, mobogenie and many more didn't work.
Finally the latest version of Kingoroot did succeed to some extent.
2. Kingoroot version which worked partially was 1.3.8.2338
By partially, I mean kingo app did say Root was successful on both PC and phone. However Root checker application said "Root is not properly installed"
Application like SuperSU and busybox did not work after installation due to improper rooting.
[TRICK : DO A FACTORY REST]
3. I booted the phone in to FACTORY recovery. Did a "Factory Reset"
Now things started to brighten up!! The ever tough Lenovo P780 started to give in slowly and steadily.
After Factory reset done and phone booted up. The first thing I did was to take SP flash tool Readback once again, so that I have a clean factory image.
you may skip read back if you don't need a clean image.
4. Used another rooting application this time, i.e., iRoot older version 1.7.9.2
Viola!!! phone got rooted properly this time.
Root checker showed "Root Available", busybox and other applications started working.
NOW WE HAVE ROOT ACCESS TRY INSTALLING CUSTOM RECOVERY
[NOTE : EVEN IF YOUR PHONE DOES NOT GET ROOTED BY 3RD PARTY APPLICATION READ ON THERE IS STILL HOPE]
1. MOST HELPFUL LINK ESPECIALLY FOR ROOTING CUSTOM RECOVERY INSTALLATION IS GIVEN BELOW

IF ROOT FAILED FOR YOU USE TUTORIAL IN LINK TO ROOT AND TRY. THAT IS A DIFFERENT PROCESS. BUT FIRST CUSTOM RECOVERY
2. Go through the link fully. Get a good understanding. No need to do it exactly as it says. A little bit of tweak worked for me,.
3. I first tried to overwrite the factory recovery with the same factory recovery image that I backed up earlier, to see how it goes.
It is always good to try this as a first step to write using flash tool. Use the scatter files and recovery image from back up.
Here's the sequence of steps I tried.
a) Using SP-Flash-Tool-v5.1352.01, Tried to overwrite only the recovery image again with same factory image(download only). Note I used
MT6589_Android_scatter_emmc.txt scatter file which was created from my phone from MTK droid tools.
I got error from flash tool
"PMT changed for the ROM; it must be downloaded"
Error number 8038. The image was not downloaded
b) Now I realized why MTKdroid tool created another scatter file MT6589_Android_scatter_emmc_PMT.txt. It was for this issue.
I retried the same steps again, but now with MT6589_Android_scatter_emmc_PMT.txt file. Flash tool downloaded the factory recovery image successfully.
I powered on the phone, but was shocked to see it was not booting up. It came to lenovo logo and displayed error something like "DL install failed"
It was never booting up. It was SOFT BRICKED!!!!
How come with just overwriting factory recovery image again with same image.... I don't know reason for that.
Even a simple, harmless operation of overwriting factory image caused a soft brick.
This is the main reason WHY do a complete read back and relevant back up before starting write operations!!!!
I tried several other scatter files along with TWRP and CWM recovery images downloaded from the internet. I tried with all scatter files from
http://forum.xda-developers.com/lenovo-p780/help/rooting-tutorial-kitkat-t2835605. It did not work.
c) Finally after several attempts, the working combination for me was a little surprise.
I tried MT6589_Android_scatter_emmc_PMT.txt file created from my phone, along with SP_Flash_Tool_v3.1304.0.119_lenovo and TWRP_v2.7.1.1_P780_ROW_KK_Corrected
both downloaded from http://forum.xda-developers.com/lenovo-p780/help/rooting-tutorial-kitkat-t2835605
Select DA DL check box and do a download only.
This combination worked. Now I have a fully rooted and TWRP installed on my Lenovo P780.

Recently i hav flashed row in my lenovo s850 &it worked but when i sestarted my device for the first time it didn't shown me sims so i hav googled it, it said to type *#06# it showed me invalid imei, please someone help to solve this problem..
First root your phone then Install Root explorer.
Second open root explorer go to data and delete nvram folder
Third reboot your phone go to Recovery and wipe data or factory reset.
Then Reboot
How to Fixing Lenovo S850 no Service Issued, 100% Work - Got this posting from the comments one of blog reader, a lot people got this problems when modified Lenovo S850. Beside Lenovo S850 when you got invalid IMEI and no service issued on your device, you can fix it by restore the IMEI and it will fix the problems other then Lenovo S850.
I don't know this guide can be use for other china device or just Lenovo S850 so if you try to another please give some word on comment.
No service is cause by NV file corrupt, so using flash tool we gone read back NV file and the flash it back to our device, if you do right this procedure than it will revive your device from dead. Please read careful step by step because it think it will complicated.

• SP Flash Tool v3.1320 ↦ for this guide actually you only need the flash tool, you can use any version of flash tool but recommended to use v3 flash tool.
• S850_ROW_S215_150114 ↦ 1.1 Gb, because this guide is for Lenovo S850 then you need to download Lenovo S850 stock ROM, for another china device then you need to search it on the need.
• NV_RAM ↦ Lenovo S850 NVRAM block, cannot be use for another device.
How to Fixing Lenovo S850 no Service Issued, 100% Work
1. Download all files and place on the same folder, so you can easy to search the needed files. Extract the both files too and then go to flash tool extracted folder, run flash_tool.exe for windows 7 or later please use administrator privilege
2. After you can see the flash tool windows, now pressALT + CTRL + V. This will make flash tool run onAdvanced Mode, you can see on the flash tool windows bar. On the Download tab click Scatter-Loading button and the navigate to ROM extracted then select MT6582_Android_scatter.txt this will load all ROM files to flash tool.
3. Click Windows ↦ Write Memory this will add a tab, then select the Write Memory tab, like on the below picture
4. Open scatter file that you find on the extracted ROM, using word pad or notepad. Search for NV word, you will see three address on the scatter filelinear_start_addr, physical_start_addr andpartition_size. Put the linear_start_add on the Begin Address (Hex) and partition_size on the Container Length (Hex)
5. Click on Open RAW Data, select the NV_RAM file that already downloaded
6. Last click Write Memory button, turn off your device because Lenovo S850 using non removable battery you must make sure that your device is completely turn off, connect your device to flash tool using USB cable and flash tool will recognize your device and begin to start flashing process, wait until you can see GREEN CIRCLE in the middle of flash tool.
7. Done, disconnect then try to turn on your device and normal boot. See if the service already on and can be use on your device.
