Hello, I'm completely new to flashing on custom roms, but I recently purchased a Redmi Note 7 Pro with the full intent to flash on something better than the China MIUI rom.
However now that i'm finally allowed to unlock my bootloader, there are a lot more custom roms to choose from in the dev subforum for this phone, and I have absolutely no idea how to tell which one is right for me.
Originally I liked the sound of Oxygen OS for being almost entirely 'stock android' with a few good additions, but then became interested in LineageOS, which also seems to be largely stock android with some improvements, and the most well know community custom rom.
So I guess what I'm looking for is a clean "like-stock" rom with a good amount of customization so I can change things to my preference, but this being my first time ever flashing a custom rom, I would also appreciate stability and security.
Pretty much all of the roms ported in the dev subforum look like they're either modified versions of LineageOS, or based on AOSP.
Should I just play it safe and go with LineageOS, do the LineageOS based roms offer enough good improvements to try one of them instead, or should I look into one of the non-LineageOS AOSP roms?
Or if the "best option" is to try them for myself to see which one I like, is jumping between different roms easy to do, and will I lose any userdata doing so?
Some more info if it helps at all:
My previous phone was a Galaxy S4 running Android 5.0.1, so pretty much any custom rom will feel new and different to me.
Some of the things that bothered me about MIUI was the removal of the App folder/drawer and how notifications for things like emails seemed very delayed and arrived in annoying bursts.
I also disliked how the app vault was filled with crap, seemed pretty uncustomizable, and also can't be disabled in favor of wrap-around pages.
Any help with information on or deciding between custom roms is greatly appreciated!
Try the crDroid official rom posted on this forum. It's based on Lineage os but comes with a lot of custiomizations and performance improvements.

Wow, I just properly read into crDroid, and it sounds like it's only got improvements and more customization options over LineageOS.
I was worried that because it was largely based on another custom rom, it might be less secure and stable or be based on an older version.
But they claim that stability and security are a main goal of theirs, and that they try to keep up with LineageOS's source.

I am looking rom that will be stable, fast and efficient gaming. I do not expect additives to modify the appearance and so on. Interested only clean roms that are a reflection of the pure system from Google, without any additional options. Rom that is worthy of interest that the best to upload?
If you really care about pure system from Google, I think you should go with Marshmallow. Nougat roms are not so stable and you lose several features like HDR.

So, I've been rooting phones off and on since the HTC Dream and with each and every phone there's been roms that were just substantially better than the stock OS. Even most recently with my S9, Samsung butchered the OS to the extent that rooting and flashing phones was pretty much necessary. With Oxygen OS being in place, I've attempted Lineage and as much as I appreciated the few offerings it did have that Oxygen OS didn't offer, it wasn't a hard decision to switch back. The most common reason I switch is usually battery life but Oxygen is even good for that. What are the selling points of your rom that makes it seem the better option than Oxygen OS?

As far as ROMS where everything is as good as OOS, no. Each custom ROM has certain things that aren't as good. For example most of them have sound that is lower and doesn't sound as good as OOS. OmniROM is the only ROM where they ported over the Atmos from OOS so the sound is the same but the Fingerprint reader doesn't work too well. Havoc has a bug where if you wanna use any gestures other than the stock ones there will be no back gesture as it gets totally disabled. Bliss has a bug where if you want to use Google Dialer and Contacts you'll get com.android.phone force closes. crDroid or anything based on Lineage has random freezes when watching videos. Most of these ROMS are one or two bug fixes away from being as good as OOS but they usually never get those bugs fixed, then a new version of Android comes out and the process starts all over again. If you want stability you're better off staying with OOS. The one or two ROMS that have appeared to be the most stable and didn't have any bugs were Paranoid Android and AOSPA but those are more vanilla and have little to no customization options. Once the standby battery drain on CarbonROM gets fixed that will be close, as the only thing left would be porting over the Atmos like Omni which seems to be the key to having the same level of sound as on OOS.

I would like to clarify a few things.
We have Dolby Atmos module which can be used to increase the volume to oos level. Only downside s that the minimum volume is too high and hence you need to disable it. That is why custom roms don't implement the module.
As far as video freezing on cr or lineage based goes, well it is due to the latest security patch. The devs are looking into it but i think google will roll out a fix in may.
PA is extremely stable but offers lesser customization. So if you don't care for face-unlock, you can use treskmod based on PA. It is equally stable. But as face-unlock is closed source, there only a chance that face-unlock will ever come to treskmod. Otherwise everythink is like PA+pixel features.
Furthermore, evox is also a great rom which you can use. It doesn't have any of the above bugs. Another option is AOSiP

I am not a dev but use custom roms. The major advantage of a custom rom is customization over OOS. Also they at a faster rate and are closer to google implementation. The devs are also trying hard to make the rom perfect. If rooted, you can also use it to maximum. Also, there is a great chance that a feature you want will be implemented into the rom if you ask the dev.
I was wondering what the most popular ROM was and in general what are ROM usage stats.
Currently I've been using CrDroid but I keep eyeing other ROMs so this might help me jump ship and try something new
Why are there not a choice of Arrow OS, maintained by lovely @TH779 ? It's stable and updates frequently, and it has been on the top of roms forums recently. I strongly condemn this behavior of ignoring contributions of some hardworking maintainers.
It wasn't the point to ignore any rom, I tried to add as many as I could but this was the limit allowed. Can't add anymore

MSM Xtended rom has been discontinued
Pixel experience, too. There isn't a public LTS copy of PE now.
Msmx here. I know about is discontinued, but for me the 5th January build is perfect.

I do love LineageOS and it's so much easier to spell than when it was called cyanogenmod. Though I always found the lack of customizations a let down, such as just battery bar settings and back button kill among other things. I found CrDroid is basically similar, but has these options built in along with signature spoofing that LineageOS doesn't have either. So I've stuck wit CrDroid lately and it's been great

ANCIENT OS have more options especially AOD brigtness setting(like MS EXTENTED).
As I was already on MiUi 12 Android 11 on Stock until I unlocked the bootloader, previously, so I was only looking for a stable A11 AOSP based ROMs.
I literally kicked the tyres on every one of them here and...
Forgetting the subjective, personal, opinion-based customisation & theming, things I have to say that...
Ancient ROM is head & shoulders above everything else here in terms of stability, the usual custom-rom bugs, things not working etc.
In all honesty, I've found Ancient Official to be more stable & bug-free than stock MiUi 12(Although that's not hard is it?!)
I've always been a happy user of RR or Havoc on most of my devices for many years & been flashing custom roms almost 10yrs, if that helps getting my perspective, but most of the ROMs on herefor our device(even official)have been a bit of a mess frankly...
By all means if you want, kick the tyres like I did, but I wouldn't waste your time.
My only quibble is that, currently, Ancient only comes with GAPPS pre-installed & there's no Vanilla version, so I had a bit of de-bloating to do after flashing...

Depends on what you're after since all of them are different in their own way. Some of them offer a lot of customization than others but mostly it's up to your taste.
My advice is ArrowOS, it's stable, fast, has customization (tho not a lot) and it's Google certified so it's legit for banking apps and NFC payments.

I doubt someone can make such a comparison, the is so many ROMs.
It depends what everyone is looking for.
Yepi69 prefers ArrowOs (which I haven't tested because I don't like paying for the complete ROM options) and I like ROMs that mimics Google Pixel.
There are caveats for each ROM.
IMHO you should compare what ROM mainteners say in their post presenting their ROM and the people reactions (reading topics is long but it worth the time reading them) and select the one that appeals you and test it for a few days. If you're satisfied keep it, if not change it.
Just remember that only Xiaomi.eu ROM is 100% compatible with original ROM and all functions of it because it's (to be simple) the original ROM with tweaks.
And also that most of ROMs may have problems with payment apps (but solutions can be provided for some) and to fully use the different cameras of X3 (there is some solutions with ANXcamera and Google camera ports but none, so far, is as complete as the original one).
Last thing to take into account is how frequent are the updates and which Android patch is included.
Some are often updated with corrections and Android patches while some don't.
I always prefer the ones with the latest security patches (and official ROM and therefore Xioami.eu are not updated with every monthly security Android patches).

I never paid a dime for this ROM, it's completely free. And this ROM also mimics Google Pixel, which is the reason I have since I'm a sucker for Google Pixel
i like one plus UI so i like wave OS .. been using it a for a while ..

My bad... I confused with another rom...
Well it all depends on original rom source. Most of the rom devs use same-ish device trees so what you get differently depends on the rom's source like resurrectionos features, arrowos features...
Some may look the same some may not like ancient, revengeos, dotos etc. You can compare them in youtube videos. That is how i would decide to use which i would like.

There is not a huge difference it's all personal preference.

Debloated OOS and some magisk mod tweaks.
I've tested custom rom my choice is Syberia
Stock or AOSPA imo
OOS
*Syberia is the most customisable and so far seems very snappy.
*Elytra OS The most aesthetic UI and fast kernel
These two ROMs are my choice for #bestROM.
*Pixel extended is the perfect Google experience
*CRDroid is also another one worth mentioning and the Dev is very friendly.
*Stag OS was the first 13 rom and is very stable also
*lineage OS is the most basic Custom rom and easy to flash.

Exactly this. They're all pretty great.
For A12, any ROM with OOSCAM and a current security update is amazing.
For A13, ElytraOS is very impressive, and the maintainer is very active in what feedback is given. StagOS As well, but that maintainer is/was supporting A12 and 13 while ElytraOS came in on A13, so has just had more time to focus just on it. Both are great.
And now with Syberia (one of my favorite OP6 roms) on the scene, It seems you literally can't pick incorrectly, all are winners.
All my issues have always come from incorrect OOS update prior to flashing a ROM (see: PEBKAC), Android and/or its various changes itself effecting the Apps I use itself or an underlining bug that's from lineage (that all start with as a base, at least on every OP devices I've run with an android OS) that's out of the maintainers control.
For now, I'm back on Pixel Experience A12, but will return to A13 ROMs once it matures a little further and apps stabilize on it (preferably one with Google AI call screening enabled by default.)
I'd also take note of the few ROMs that offer vanilla builds that allow you to manage your own exposure to GApps, or none at all (ex: CRDroid)

OOS13 is so damn beautiful but hate the idea of trying to root, remove bloat/spyware, optimize it all while in Beta.
I need to try it at least once for a week or so.
nothing beats the stability of OOS.
i use some filming ang photography apps. i have tested these apps with most of the popular custom roms. the apps develop issues that do not happen in OOS.
