Storage Permission Android Q Beta 2 - Google Pixel 3 Questions & Answers

Has anyone tried to download a file in Chrome? It says it needs storage permission, but there's no longer a storage permission in Q. So basically you can't download files

Caution: Beta 2 introduces significant behavior changes that affect apps. In particular, the latest updates around isolated storage may cause issues with apps that access photos, videos, media, or other files stored on your device, such as when browsing or sharing in social media apps. You may notice this even more if you factory reset your device after taking the over-the-air update (OTA), or when installing new apps.

That said, I have no issues downloading files with Chrome. I don't see storage as a permission for it.

I have the same issue, workaround was to use Chrome beta.

no storage permissions also here with new patch for b2

[Q] No Internal Memory

I need some help here. I have no internal memory on my blaze. I have no games, a hundred pictures or so, and a decent number of apps downloaded. I have used app2sd to move as many apps to the external sd card, but I have consistently run out of memory in a variety of ROMs. I am currently using AOKP ROM, but it is the same case with a few others I have used. I cannot take pictures because my memory is full. Things like evernote will not sync, nook can't download books, etc.
Anybody got any suggestions? I am not really even sure what is taking up all the memory, none of the files are even that large. I can provide any info needed, just not sure where to begin.

Try getting a dropbox, google drive or skydrive account and loading all your files such as pics, videos and even titanium backup folder etc. Using file explorers suchas astro will still let you view the files as if they were on your phone. Also go through all your apps and clear all the caches. Browsers such as Mozilla can have very large caches especially if there synced to your pc. I use dolphin browser, other small browsers such as opera mini might help based on your preferences, try a few. Google+, maps and other google apps tend to keep a large cache on hand. The online album syncs such as dropbox should resolve the issue.
Oh and google drive offers more space initially than dropbox, skydrive gives you 7 gigs off the jump. If it helped hit thx

I've downloaded skydrive as I've been using windows 8 on my pc and pretty happy with it thus far. Is there a way to change my setting\s so pictures, etc are stored here? Or would I just basically upload them and then delete them from the gallery?

You need to download sky drive to your PC. You can edit the settings from your PC to automatically sync PC when on, and doesn't matter where u delete from PC or phone ,online album will sync delete across all devices. I use all three giving me a total of 14.5 gbs of space, I only keep drop box sync on and use the other two selectively.
Also probally best to setup sync over WiFi only to avoid overage on your data network usage

Ok, so things did not work out for me. I have files synced and uploaded to dropbox and skydrive. However, all the pictures were already stored on my external sd card, the real external sd card which has about 4 of 8 gb free still. So, I'm at a bit of a loss here as to what to do. The 1.39 available storage on the internal usb storage is completely full. THere are no games, music, and a few pictures on it and that it is it. What is taking up so much space?

I have the same problem with mine. Use a file manager and delete the ".thumbnails" folder in the DCIM folder and it frees up a few hundred mb. It might be hidden so you may need a root explorer or plug your usb into the computer
That's how it is for me at least.

You dont sync your browser from phone to pc do you? I use to with mozilla, but ended up with a mobile browser weighing in at around 120 mb (ouch). Use a smaller browser. Another thing do you regularly clear your caches? These can stack up. Also if your photos are all uploaded to dropbox and such, DELETE them from your phone. The ones you use for wallpapers, contacts etc., store on your external card that way to be safe and not delete them when you clear your gallery after new uploads. Last thing check your downloaded files from setting and see which ones can be moved to sd card. Other than that explore your files.
If it helped hit thx
Try wipping Dalvik and cache partition and any thumbnails inside the DCMI folder.

I found the culprit with es file explorer. Sizes of folders were not showing up if I connected to the pc and tried to use the windows file explorer. THere was some file that was almost 1gb in the cwm folder.
I use chrome and it is synced. Should I turn this off?

I would. Also have you ever tried dolphin browser? It loads web pages alot faster, throw in adaway to block popups and youll be solid. Both you can get from the play store. Its up to you but I use jetpack (playstore) with dolphin to improve speed.

Back up all your apps (Either with Titanium Backup) Wipe and factory reset everything,(In cwr go to mounts and format all except external_SD) flash your ROM. Now you should be all clean. Then I suggest getting a 32 GB SD card and use Link2Sd and Directory Bind to move actual apps to your external SD. Here is a great guide on how to use both apps http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?p=33884286

Internal storage acting up

My phone won't let me download pictures, create any new folders, move or copy files to other folders, and chrome keeps deleting my tabs. When I go to delete files it says external storage files can not be removed to recycle bin. It says my storage is full but I still have 723 Mb free. It does let me delete files just not do anything else with them. When I try to download a picture through chrome it immediately pauses the download and when I try to resume it it pauses again. When I try to take screenshots it says can not take screenshot due to security policy in a little grey bubble near the bottom of the screen. It won't let any apps save pictures and whenever I restart the phone all my settings are reset to default and my app locker is disengaged. It won't let me download or update apps either and I get an error 963 or 492 from Google play. It will not allow me to send pictures with any apps either such as skype, Instagram, amino, etc. Apps randomly crash as well even when I'm not using them. I've tried clearing the cache with no success as well as unistalling all play store updates. The camera will not take pictures either, the shutter will click but no picture is saved. Any help is appreciated xc my phone is a Samsung Galaxy J3 running Android 7.0 and it is not rooted.

Yes i have it didn't change anything my storage is still acting strange. When I use certain apps they'll keep refreshing pictures and files and apps like it's rescanning them over and over. Almost like if an SD card was being mounted and unmounted rapidly but it's the internal storage

Storage access bugged

Hey guys, new here, hope it's right to post this here and not in my device's section but it's probably pretty empty in there.. Anyways, i have a very strange problem with my storage access where apps can't properly see contents in my storage (both internal and sd card) meaning the following: apps know folders exist and that space is taken up, but they seem to be unable to actually read or write files somehow. For example the storage tab in the settings shows how much space is free but the categories like pictures, music etc files show 0 bites, except for apps, that section shows up fine. Another example: fx file explorer can't show the amount of used space in the general overview or the folder information tab. But when i actually go into a folder it does show how much space is used and how much is free. I can open a music file in the built in fx music player but when i try to open in an external app it cant play it, shows its at e.g. 116:27:01 out of 5:52 actual play time and that the media format may not be supported. I'd post screenshots but i cant actually make any as the system cant save them.
I have tried restarting, even had a security update from before a few days that i was to lazy to install so i did that, still no change. I also tried removing the sd card to no avail. Since the google play services were using up alot of battery i tried deleting cache, data and even updates for both them and the play store but it seems that this was just another symptom and not the cause. So i think the culprit might be the whatsapp beta version 2.19.365 which crashed at the splash screen for most of it's users. I somehow managed to update it but the problems started when i tried opening it so i don't see what else would be the culprit. I've already contacted their support but tbh i don't ecxpect much help from them.
I'm on an unrooted Honor 7x with Emui 9.1 (based on Android 9).
Does anybody have any idea on what i might try except for a factory reset? I would really like to avoid doing that.
I thsnk everybody who took their time to read and maybe even answer this. Hope your day is going better. Cheers

Storage Permission gone OP11 Update 3rd party save issue

Hello everyone,
After the new update the storage permission option is gone from App Permission, though there is Media & Files permission but appa like "Vivavideo" & "Picsart" is unable to save the end project due to missing storage permission.
Need help on this asap, unable to save my video & Picture projects.
You will have to wait till they release there software that is compliant with Android 11.
This is because of scoped storage in android 11. The other comment is right. The software needs to be updated to support scoped storage.

Question System app "Media Storage" seemingly duplicating all of "media" files

I have a ROG 5 Tencent version with Global ROM, .86 build.
Found out that my storage was for some reason almost full. Checked on Android's storage manager and found that System App "Media Storage" is taking up 36.2GB of space. Also checked with DiskUsage, and it seems this "Media Storage" is exactly the same amount as all data under "media", which would be all videos and downloads (all non-app files). So it seems for some reason the data is being duplicated.
Upon research, I found two things:
1. This also happened to OnePlus users, and apparently the data isn't actually duplicated in Media Storage; it's just incorrectly displayed, and you can go above the displayed storage limit. If this is what is also happening, it's still a problem for me because if I try to sync data from my computer, it'll stop transferring because it'll detect my phone as full.
2. Happened to some users with WhatsApp. Doesn't apply to me because I don't have WhatsApp, nor have I ever installed it on this device.
The "Clear Storage" & "Clear Cache" options for Media Storage are also greyed out, so I have no clue how to proceed.
Anyone else run into this problem? Any solutions?
Edit: updated to .151, problem still exists.
Make sure all critical data is redundantly backed up.
Try force stopping the app. Still can't app clear its data?
Sync is so much easier but I always do cut/paste for backups... once bitten, twice shy.

Doesn't give me an option to force stop Media Storage.
Could it be an apk with System Administrator rights be locking it out?

I don't understand why it's locked down like that.
Is that normal for that device?
Make sure that under Settings -> Storage you don't have Storage manager enabled.
Media Storage isn't ACTUALLY taking up that space, though. You can't clear the data for it because it's technically not using it. It is just reporting how much data is taken up by media and the system incorrectly displays that as the amount of data used by the app.
If you look in Settings -> Storage and do the math on the totals, you'll find that the total doesn't match the one in the upper left. Taking Media Storage into consideration, I should be at 403 of 256 GB. Media Storage appears as 186 GB and my remaining storage is still 31 GB.

Hi! Quite late to the party, still posting just to ask if you found any solution to this "Media Storage" issue?
My OnePlus 9RT is having the same problem now. What is worst is it is not like just "incorrectly displayed" as some users said on Reddit, here and other forums. Recently my Media Storage size went up to 58Gb and then when I went to install Grid Autosport, which takes around 4Gb space, PlayStore showed me that I have to delete apps to make space for Grid!!! So, that means the Phone is reading this Media Storage app space, its not just a virtual/incorrectly displayed number!

I think you are confusing the words with a visual misrepresentation that can be ignored. As I posted last year, it means that media storage "thinks" the files are there and is telling the system that space is used, but the physical files don't exist. It is not that the space is actually available and it's being shown incorrectly. It's that the system is reserving that space for files that aren't present. If that weren't the case, then the answer would be simply to clean out your storage of any files you don't need and free up the space.

Which simply means what the OP posted. At the end of the day that space cannot be used and that's a problem. Technically you are correct but you have killed the discussion on this thread by twisting it into another direction. So let me try to bring it back.
Mediastorage is a problem! It is causing the system to reserve space unnecessarily. For every 1 GB that I consume, mediastorage consumes and equal amount of space (at least from the OS's POV).
@twistedumbrella Stop saying that it is a "visual representation". And you're 100% wrong. The answer isn't to clean out our own files. The answer is to stop mediastorage from causing the OS to reserve space unnecessarily.

Interesting. This problem is being seen on other makes as well. May be related to the OS version or the media storage app; they're all might be using the same open source code.
Or both together. Scoped storage sucks... just a guess.
Back up all critical data redundantly first then play with it to try to find the app(s) responsible as in indicated in the link above. Do some more Google searches for the same issue, it doesn't have to be your exact make/model neccesarily to apply.
Is it a clean load loaded after firmware upgrades? Was it hand loaded rather than a automated transfer app like Samsung's SmartSwitch? These apps are known troublemakers when going cross device or platform.
Try to develop a work around... more fun times with Android.
Play with it.
Got my Oneplus 9 same problem with os11. maybe only google can resolve this issue?
Were you able to fix or found a fix on this, i just checked mine and this "Media" app taking a lot of storage on my Xiaomi 11t pro
