Upgrade from Nougat (7.1.1.) to latest Pie - Sony Xperia XZ Premium Questions & Answers

So iv had this device for quite some time now. Updating the phone through the internet doesnt do anything and goes into loop and restarts. So im stuck on this Android version for a long time.
Im a little bit of a newbie when it comes to firmware flashing rooting etc. I am on an Xperia XZ Premium G8141 with Build number 45.0.A.5.1
I already have the bootloader unlocked.
What would be the right steps for me to take in order to upgrade to Android Pie safely? Maybe even root the phone?
Stock Android Pie would be the best option for me i think

So i managed to Upgrade on my own to Android 8
Downloaded firmware from XperiFirm and flashed it on my device with newflasher
Still when i go to system updates it doesnt update. It downloads a 1.5 gb file then restarts and the update is still there.
Any solutions?

Your device is unlocked. OTA is broken. You must flash 9.0 manually. And no there is no way to re-lock the bootloader that I know of. If you would like me to tell you dee way to do that PM me or reply back here

i would like to know how yes. thanks
lets do that here and not over pm so maybe more people looking for something like that could find it also
i would like to have Android 9 Pie and also maybe give it a try to root it.
Iv never done that before and since its not my main device i would give it a go and install some custom apps and modifications.

Ok ? I'm at work right now but once I get home I'll write you up a guide here on how to get to pie, how to flash twrp, how to root phone, and how get xposed if that's what u want or existenze room working.

I just know how it feels to have ur thread go ignored. So I try to help anyone in any thread I see.
Do you want volte for T-mobile cause I can make that happen. Also do u have fastboot and adb drivers installed?

im not sure what you mean with volte for T-mobile. If it has to do with networks im actually in Greece and we dont use T-Mobile here. I saw a Greek Android version up to 8.0.0. which i have installed right now
I have fastboot and adb drivers already installed, but the adb driver seems to be giving me some error and exclamation mark in device manager for some reason. The phone is recognised by Xperia Companion for example though

figure out that error. right click on the driver and look in details and report back. An xperia companion should most likely be useless at this point since u unlocked it

Well from a translation of Greek it says "not possible to start this device (code 10)"
Its the Sony sa0116 adb interface driver right? That's the one I could find

First if your phone blows up, freezes, dies or boot loops it is not my fault. I will help if i can but if you blame me. I will not feel bad
First things first Here's what you need!!!
-flashtool- If you can find the xperia ftf downloader only more power to you. http://www.flashtool.net/index.php
-newflasher, This is the correct tool for flashing new firmware on the xz premium https://forum.xda-developers.com/crossdevice-dev/sony/progress-newflasher-xperia-command-line-t3619426
-twrp image: https://dl.twrp.me/maple/
-root aka magisk https://forum.xda-developers.com/apps/magisk/official-magisk-v7-universal-systemless-t3473445
-minimal adb. Not gonna link it. so easy to search. INSTALL THIS BEFORE EVERYTHING ELSE
Ok here we go to getting to 9.0 and root:
Getting your firmware
-First install flashtool after you download it.
-Once its installed you want to navigate your explorer to where it was installed, and find the drivers folder. Click the drivers exe and it will come up with many options. You want adb and fastboot. I think its the first two. Click install
-Drivers installed? OK moving on! Open flashtool and navigate to xperifirm. Should be on the toolbar. Another window will pop up with a bunch of xperia phones and years. Find your phone. click your region. In the right screen of the window it will show what firmware is available. Most recent pie version will end in .24. If unsure, GOOGLE THE FIRMWARE NUMBER.
-CLICK ON THAT FIRMWARE AND IT WILL BEGIN TO DOWNLOAD. after download it will unpack it
-Once it unpacks and finishes, close the download window. Close xperifirm. Dont touch flash tool. Leave THAT OPEN. Flashtool will then unpack the ftf (which is important that it does) and the bottom bar will have progress bar. It will be clear when it finishes or fails but you will see red letters if it did.
-Firmware unpacked? Great! Extract your newflash firmware. All items in the zip must go into the folder where your firmware was downloaded. Mine looks like this C:\Users\rocke\.flashTool. It will be in the download folder and it will have your unpacked firmware. Go into that folder and it will have a bunch of files from your ftf. Move your new flasher files in there. Make sure boot folder is emptied into the main folder where are the others are and new flasher. Delete boot folder.
Flashing time
-hold volume down and plug in phone to pc. Green light should come one.
-Open Newflasher.exe
-a few questions will appear. I dont type = yes on both questions cause its kinda pointless unless you need gordon gate drivers and u want to back up something that i think i dont need/
-WHoooooosh! Command lines will start popping up and your phone is being flashed. Let its do its thing
-Eventually it will tell you you can disconnect your phone after u close the window. Boom android 9
Give me the root captain!!!
root.....a dangerous but such a fun little thing
-first your twrp. Hold volume up and plug in phone. Blue Light will come on. the twrp image must go in the minimal adb folder. Other wise adb will think your crazy and say it doesnt exist.
-type this in minimal adb fastboot devices. it will show if a fastboot device is available. If not we have problem with drivers. If yes. Then we keep trucking on
-flash twrp. type this command in fastboot flash recovery twrp.img (rename image obviously) It will flash it to the phone.
-Reboot phone into recovery. Volume down and power button. Release at sony logo or it might be the unlocked bootloader warning. Cant remember. Either way release power button on that logo and keep holding volume down.
Boom your in twrp.
-if magisk wont move over to your sd card in twrp. its time to adb push
-adb push magisk.zip /sdcard
it will move the file.
-Find where you pushed it and install magisk. It will do its thing.
If you followed the instructions your phone should be rooted and you want need a drm fix to cover the holes of the BL unlock. If hit any snags message me or reply here

Thanks for taking the time to write this.
The first part of flashing Android 9 I already know how to do. As I mentioned I my second post in this thread I already upgraded from Android 7 to Android 8. My problem was that XperiFirm doesn't have Android 9 for my device and Android 8 is the latest I could find to download. I would have already flashed Android 9 otherwise
As for the rooting part I will have a look when I'm back at home
Sent from my iPhone using Tapatalk

Yes I understand that. If you want 9 u need to use xperiafirm and get a different region that has access to it. If you use Greece ftf that is still on oreo. Chance is you'll be on 8 for a long time

I'll try and find one with Android 9 then when I get the time to do that. Also pretty busy with work

ce1 matches the europe basebands. that i know is for sure on 9.0

i think i will give a try to a custom Rom instead like this one :

[Q] Am I rooted or unlocked??

Sent my phone to Square Trade before I got the 4.0.4 update (was previously on 4.0.2 with T-Mobile). They put a new "main circuit board" in my phone (sent it in for power button inop).
Well when I got my phone back the first thing I noticed was an "unlocked lock" symbol during boot up. Then I found that that it was updated to 4.0.4 and in my app drawer the Superuser app (which I updated to v3.0.7 (41)) is present.....
Here is the specs under the "about phone" section in Settings:
Build number: IMM76D
Baseband version: I9020XXKI1
Kernel version:
3.0.8-g6656123
[email protected] #1
Thu Feb 2 16:56:02 PST 2012
I've never rooted before -so I don't know how to confirm that I am. However I noticed that in the Superuser app, when I go to check for updates it says that my installed version is LEGACY -and it says a new version of SU BINARY was found. When I tap on "update" it says: CHECKING FOR BUSY BOX... NOT FOUND, and then GAINING ROOT ACCES... FAIL!
Also when attempting to try out Droid Wall and Adblock they both say that I am not rooted.
Does this mean that I am not rooted?? -even though that "unlocked lock" symbol is present at start up??
If they rooted my phone wrong, what can I do to root it correctly??
-and-
How to I return to stock un-rooted 4.0.4 if I ever need to??
Any help would be GREATLY appreciated.
The unlocked symbol when you start up your phone (under the Google logo, right?) just means your bootloader is unlocked, which is the first step in actually rooting the phone.
As for Superuser, even non-rooted phones can install it from the Market/Play Store (like you have), doesn't necessarily mean you're rooted.
Did you install Superuser or did they put it on the phone?
They put it on my phone. I just updated it from the Play Store when I was putting all my apps back on my phone.

Maybe they just wanted to see whether or not you were rooted?
So I can go ahead and follow the "how to root i9020T" guide under the stickied General section of this Nexus S forum? ....and I should be ok?
I figure that if my bootloader is already unlocked I might as well go all the way and finally root this phone, right? That or lock it up again.
My main concern is since I didn't know where they left of, I wasn't sure where to begin/pick back up in finishing the root process.
If I follow the guide from the top I should be safe though, right?

if you already have a custom recovery, just flash any of the custom roms(or kernels) and youll have root. if not, flash a custom recovery then a custom rom(or kernel). all the custom roms come with su binaries. yea, its that easy.
So I'm not sure if they put custom recovery on my phone.... how can I tell??

ha! dead android, lol.
youll need to flash a recovery via fastboot(probably clockworkmod recovery).
Ok.... flashing recovery is ALWAYS where I get lost when I read up on rooting.
Could you/someone point me in the right direction please?? (via instructions or a link to some GOOD & CURRENT instructions and files).
Can I just follow instructions from http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=895545 and start from the top -so that I get a feel of how to do this from the beginning????
-and if I follow the instructions from this post, will I still be running 4.0.4??
This dead android really concerns me a bit!!
That guide is perfect. If you use, it will install a custom recovery on your phone, which can then be USED to install 4.0.4 on your phone again. If you don't really want root access, I'd stay where you are right now.
Anyhow, if you DO decide to follow the guide, you can skip the part where it says to type "fastboot oem unlock" (beginning of part 2) because that command unlocks the bootloader, and your phone already has an unlocked bootloader (shown bythe unlocked lock you see when you turn your phone on).
OK.... so I'm following the guide, BUT when I go to "update driver software" I point it to where I downloaded the "android-sdk_r13-windows.zip" file, but it won't let me select it. I also tried extracting the file directly onto my C:\ drive, but it won't let me select it there either.
What am I missing here??
(running Windows XP 32 bit, by the way)
Do you have either WinZip, Winrar, or 7-zip installed on your computer? You need them to extract the file, which will give you a folder. Point the driver installer to that folder after you've extracted it
Well I got the file extracted just fine. Problem is that when it won't let me select ANYTHING when I try to update the driver (the "OK" is dulled out when I point it to where I extracted the file to).
BTW, at the current state, next to "Android 1.0" in my Device Manager it shows a yellow "question mark & exclamation mark", and it is a sub of "other devices" (with a yellow "question mark" next to that as well).
Did I miss a step????
Try picking just the folder where the extracted folder is, that might work. As for the yellow exclamation mark, it's normal. That's what the drivers you install are going to fix
Still won't let me chose anything.....
One thing I noticed is that in the instructions it says to point it to "(..\android-sdk-windows\google-usb_driver)" .....but I don't have anything that says "\google-usb_driver" at the end of the file name. I only have "android-sdk-windows" -even after I extracted the file.
All I have inside the "android-sdk-windows" folder are: add-ons, platforms, tools, SDK Manager, and SDK Readme. None of them have anything that say "google-usb_driver" in them.
Where do I find this "google-usb_driver"??
Scroll down on this page
http://developer.android.com/sdk/win-usb.html
Actually, it might be easier to try this out
http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1589251
Hmmm... that one-click root method looks awesome, but since it was only uploaded yesterday I'm a little bit weary of it.
I tried to get that google-usb_driver, but with the sdk r13 it won't let me unless I update to r17. I'm thinking of just going to http://developer.android.com/sdk/index.html and getting the latest sdk r17 exe file & trying to go from there. Only concern is that on the guide here on xda it says "from sdk r14 forward Google removed the fastboot command so I'd have to make the fastboot command myself" -will this be an issue or is that easily done??
(I seriously can't believe I'm running into wall after wall with this.
I REALLY appreciate all the help thus far, by the way)

Asus ME581CL / Downgrade from x.x.77 and root now possible / worldfirst!

Hi guys, ITS done!
UPDATE: 8.5.2015
Today i found the last fastboot command to downgrade.
Now its possible to downgrade from .77 to the rootable versions .53 or .57.
After downgrade and root, its possible to save the su with the root ab and upgrade your device to the newest .77 version.
Thx to the creator of the rootzenfone app!
So everyone who was to fast with the upgrades, can now go back and root the ASUS ME581CL.
I try now to pack all data in an apk, so that everyone can use it without to type. :good:
UPDATE: 9.5.2015
I will post now the steps to downgrade because of guys who want faster the root.
Intelflashtool: https://mega.co.nz/#F!B1lCHKbQ!pHQkVqwBcD5gQkaKhjd1hA
1. Make a backup of your apps with the asus backup tool or adb backup.
2. Copy the firmware .53 or .57 from the asus site and put it on your sdcard.
Rename to MOFD_SDUPDATE. (Look at your SKU ww,tw)
3. Factory reset and boot to droidboot with adb reboot bootloader or vol+ and power button on offline device.
4. Now we are flash the following files:
a. fastboot flash token bom-token.bin
b. fastboot flash dnx dnx_fwr.bin
c. fastboot flash dnx dnx_osr.bin
d. fastboot flash dnx ifwi.bin
e. fastboot flash radio radio_firmware.bin
f. fastboot flash tlv update.tlv
5. Now push vol- button to the point „sd update“ and press the power button. Plug off USB. The device is in Intel SOC mode now with an offline screen. No panic.
The last file to start flashing is the correct droidboot, this will done in next point...
6. Open Intel phone flash tool and choose "custom flash". On upper left choose "systemblankphone"
and click the files we flashed before (radio and tlv not need). Inclusive fastboot.img.pos.bin and boot.img in the lines.
Check the box with on-demand flash mode and press "start flash."
7. Press vol+ and vol- at same time on the tablet and plug usb in your pc. Release the vol buttons and then flash starts. Now its a little bit tricky but you can not brick your device. After around 3 min plug off usb and stop the flash. Uncheck all and let only OS Image actice.
Start Intelphone flasher again with "start flash". After around 2 min plug off device again and stop the intel tool. Now its ready!
8. This point is not really relevant but i push the power button for 10 sec and plug in the usb. Now the tab is charging and the display switch on. Start device with power button and the downgrade to .53 or .57 is starting.
9. Install the root zenfone tool, activate airplane mode and start the root app. Now your tab is rootet on .53 or .57. Open root tool again and look if root keeper is active. So, now you can upgrade to the newer versions. but use only the OTA updates then your root is safe.
I tried many weeks and this methode is safe, works without problems. Asus ME581CL rooted, job is done!
Have fun!
ps. now i will work for a app that can backup and flash nandroid within android. First tests look good.
Thx

I managed it to root my Asus ME581C, firmware version KVT49L.WW_epad-11.8.2.58-20141021 with the Intel Atom Root Pack from this thread http://forum.xda-developers.com/android/development/intel-android-devices-root-temp-cwm-t2975096
First of all i enabled USB debugging in expert mode and copy the SuperSU Zip on the internal storage. Then i installed all USB drivers for Windows. At last i start the launch.bat from the root pack, first type "ACCEPT" in the shell window and then "T3". I got the temp CWM Recovery and flash the SuperSU Zip and restart my device. All runs well now.
But i have one question. My device say, there is a firmware update, and that my files are not get lost if i start the update. Did i have already superSU if i do the update? Did someone tested it?

Hello
You really rooted the Asus Memo Pad ME581C ?
Yep, i attached some pics.
SuperSU installed doesn't mean we gained root. Did you check it with root checker ? An application like titanium or adaway works?
Don't think I have a doubt in your world but till now nobody got root on ME581C (on the contrary ME572C). I receive mine at the end of this week and I'm really interested to root It. I cannot use anymore tab or phone without clean master, greenify, titanium and adaway.
sorry i can't help you
i am an new people
As you can see on the second Picture, i already installed Titanium Backup, and it works. Same with Apps like Lucky Patcher, Aptoide or AdFree. Works all like a charm
Ok, this is a good new, I receive my ME581C tomorrow or friday.
But where did you get the firmware version KVT49L.WW_epad-11.8.2.58-20141021 ?
you didn't update to WW-11.8.2.72 ?
i got my ME581C at the 8th of april. The manufacturing date on the packaging says 11/2014. I think i got a lucky shot with this device The device came with the firmware KVT49L.WW_epad-11.8.2.58-20141021.
I got mine last friday.
First thing I did, check firmware version. It's WW_epad-11.8.2.58-20141021 too.
I tried RootZenFone-1.4.6.8r and to my great surprise, it worked. So, for now, I'm in the same place as you, I don't know if I can update firmware without lost root.
If we can make a backup of system partition, we could reverse by recovery.
besides, tab is really nice and screen is large enough for everything. As comfortable as 10' for a tab size close to 7'. But I discovered some little problems:
- too large to be taken in one hand
- whites are not real white. It seems that colorimetry is too hot. I compared with ME572C which got real clean whites.
- speakers are not as good as ME572C, sound is flat.
On the contrary, the 7' screen of ME572C is too small for comics, games, etc ...
Funny thing, ME581C screen could enter into ME572C. That will be the perfect
root
Hi guys,
Sry for delay. Was busy with study and the new Smsung 920 and 925.
Root is no problem until firmware x.x.65 arrived.
My goal is to root the new firmware x.x.77.
What ive done now is flash the Asus down from the x.x.77 to the x.x.54.
The problem is that after the upgrade, root get lost.
I made a backup off all mmcbl partitions. I flashed all partitions without problems, so if the root is lost i can go back to the x.x.54 firmware.
Anyone know a solution to keep root after the update? Erase Asus the system partition with an upgrade?
So thats the problem su cant hide.

i tried to use asus flashtools but it failed :crying:

Fine. I post all on the first post.
I think in max. 15min all is done.
But where is update.tlv? I cannot find it =(
Also on step 7 nothing happen and I have 1 unknowns device "MOOREFIELD"...
And finally it's bricked...no any reaction after step 6, only unknowns device "MOOREFIELD".
UPD: strange, but it works ))) Actually update.tlv not necessary. Trying to update via OTA
Nice to hear. I will look for the tlv. But not all files are needet to work, i posted all files what we can flash for the best compatility.
I tried many weeks now for a solution and "bricked" it many times. But i get it always back with this tool.
The main problem was the ifwi file. Without that, no downgrade is possible. And to flash this file, was also not possible.
But now it worked.
You can make a nandroid backup with twrp live or nandroid manager to keep a safe backup.

Bootloop 2013 Moto G Boost Mobile XT1031 8GB

Hey guys!
To start, I want to say what an amazing place XDA is and how much information and knowledge you can get from here and how awesome the moderators are. I don't think I could ever find another amazing and/or helpful community such as those found here! Thanks to all who have helped me out with my Android issues!
Now to my issue and I apologize ahead of time if there is another thread (or related thread) found in the forum.
As the title states, I have a 2013 Motorola Moto G XT1031 Boost Mobile device. I had upgraded it to Lollipop 5.0.2 or 5.1 when it came out (I can't remember which one it was) and I had then decided to root it. I can say that I believe I was successful in rooting the device because I was able to install Supersu and use RootChecker to verify the install. Everything was going okay until i decided to research and eventually install a custom recovery and attempt to install a custom ROM. Well, let's just say that the recovery install was a bust...
In doing my research for a custom recovery, I found that TWRP had a custom recovery for my phone and apparently for my firmware via TWRP's app on the Play Store. So, I searched for my device in their in-app search for a custom recovery, downloaded it and installed it from the app. Now, my gut told me that this probably wouldn't work and that I should probably be installing a custom recovery via CLI. Nope. I didn't do this. Instead, like I said, I installed a custom recovery from the app itself. That screwed things up for me. I have no idea if it was the install, but my phone began to act incredibly strange. When in the TWRP recovery, my screen had this line that would continuously scroll from top to bottom. It wasn't a completely solid line, but it was transparent, almost like an empty thermometer glass stick was going down the screen. It was weird and not normal. I figured the phone's software was partially broken. It only did this in the TWRP recovery. Nowhere else did this happen. It was slightly annoying.
Later on I decided to install a custom ROM. Again, I did the necessary research to find out if there were any ROMs available for my phone (using XDA of course and others) and found that there were a few out there. So, I downloaded one (wish I could remember which one) and attempted to install it...keyword there. After attempting the install, my phone would not boot. Like at all. Dead. So back to the drawing board I went to try and reverse the damage. Using XDA (ironically) and a plethora of other sites, I tried to resurrect my phone and bring it back to life. After countless hours of trying and trying and trying and more and more research, I just gave up. The phone is dead. Great. $170 spent on a phone to break it a year later.
It's been roughly 4-5 months since I have attempted to redo the process and after another minor attempt, somehow I was able to remove the root completely, including the custom recovery and ROM. I don't know what the heck I did, but it worked....sort of. The phone is now stuck in a bootloop on the logo and sometimes the "bootloader has been unlocked" screen when try and factory reset the phone from the default recovery. When trying to reinstall the stock firmware, I read everywhere that I need the phone to have USB-debugging set and to have this and that. I have this and that installed on my PC, but obviously cannot enable USB-debugging which is needed for ADB and fastboot to recognize my device.
So, my question for anyone who would like to help me out is this: what are my options? Is the phone recoverable? Is there any way I can get ADB/fastboot to see my device and finally install the stock firmware on the phone? I have the proper drivers installed and ADB/fastboot are on my PC. Any help would be amazing, even if you have to tell me to junk it.

This is incorrect, where did you read that? To reinstall the stock firmware using fastboot, you must be able to boot to the bootloader menu only.
I heard this from a few websites actually, although I could never find a situational fix for my phone. I am trying to restore back to Lollipop without a custom recovery, because within the past hour I found out TWRP was never fully removed when I tried booting into recovery from the AP Fastboot menu when doing to power+vol down option. The TWRP logo shows for about 10 seconds and then the phone tries booting normally, showing the unlocked bootloader warning.
So, yes I can boot into the bootloader menu all day long with no problems. It's just an selection I make doesn't get me anywhere. My question I guess now is: how do I go about reinstalling stock firmware via the bootloader menu. I have Minimal ADB and Fastboot installed on my PC. If I need the full ADB, I can download that. And of course I'd need the firmware, too.
You can find stock firmware images in this thread, there's also a link to an installation guide there:

I am trying to follow the steps listed here http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=2542219&page=35 and for some reason I cannot run any of the commands pertaining to the sparsechunks. This is what I get:
Is there anything you could tell me about that?
Edit: I was able to figure what the issue was when trying to write the sparsechunks. I had to insert a "." after 'sparsechunk' because that is how the file is named in the folder. However, now I am getting a new error, but it takes place on the phone screen. Every time I attempt to write a sparsechunk, it will initiate the process of doing so, but on the phone I'll get what appears to be an error saying, "Image is too large" in pink lettering. Why does this happen? Each sparsechunk file is at least 4MB less than the max-sparse-size according to the ADB and my phone, which is set to 256MB. Is there any way to change that?

Check which sparsechunk files you have and make sure you flash all of them in ascending order. If it still fails, copy/paste the contents of your command prompt window (no screenshots please).

I will try that. There was a ...sparsechunks.0 as well apart from sparsechunks.1, sparsechunks.2 and sparsechunks.3. Shall I include that, too?
And adding the screenshot was an amateur mistake. My bad.
@_that this worked like a charm. Phone is 100% working ans usable now. Incredibly helpful. Thank you so much!

[H915] Root Guide + Restore Any Bricked LG V20

Just in Time for The New Year I would like to show Everyone How to root there Canadian variant LG V20!
Current Known issues
- No Service From Carrier
- Seems VERY Laggy (Can be Fixed with using a Kernel)
Other Information
- Yes you can Restore to factory Settings with this Method (So Don't worry if you screw up)
- Sorry far I Only know This works on the H915 however the Restore should work with all LG Models
- This will give you a Bootloader to have access to fastboot Commands
- Working TWRP Recovery
So After Reading the No Service Part many are mostly not going to be interested... I uploaded this Thread anyway to see if anyone could find a fix to this issue. (When one is found I will update this with the fix)
So If you still want to Root your Canadian LG V20 Let's do it!

WHAT DO YOU NEED BEFORE YOU START
- A Copy of LGUP
- An LG V20 H915 Running the 10d Firmware (if you need help flashing this firmware read below before Step 1)
- The Zip File I Listed above to Download
- ADB and LG Drivers
- A Windows Computer
HOW TO UPGRADE/DOWNGRADE TO FIRMWARE VERSION 10d
Step 1 - Boot Your Device into Download Mode (Turn the phone off hold the Vol + Button and plug in your device to the Computer)
Step 2 - On your Computer find the Zip File (extract it) and Open Uppercut.exe (This should launch LGUP and Make sure your Phone is Connected to your Computer)
Step 3 - In LGUP Select the Upgrade button (even if you are downgrading it will still work) then find the Firmware .kdz file for 10d
Step 4 - Flash the KDZ back onto your device
ROOTING THE DEVICE!
Step 1 - Install a Terminal Emulator App to your Device
Step 2 - Verify your device is plugged in and that ADB sees the Device (adb devices)
Step 3 - On your Computer Open the RUNMEFIRST.bat (do not close this window)
Step 4 - After loading up RUNMEFIRST.bat run Step1.bat (if you see permission denied on the files Flatland and Flatland64 this is normal)
Step 5 - Once the shell prompt opens in the step 1.bat window type "run-as con" (without quotations then hit enter) then type "chmod 0777 /storage/emulated/0/*" (yet again not in quotations and then hit enter)
Step 6 - Once that has finished on your phone open the Terminal app you downloaded earlier and type in id (if untrusted_app is displayed continue if not redo the steps)
Step 7 - In the Terminal Emulator type applypatch /system/bin/atd /storage/emulated/0/dirtysanta then watch the RUNMEFIRST.bat to see when it tells u to open Step2.bat (when it tells u to open Step2.bat open it)
Step 8 - You should now Be into a Somewhat usable bootloader on your device... now we Stop using DirySanta and Start to do things manually by ourselves open up a Command Prompt and type "fastboot flash boot boot.img" this will flash the boot2.img used in the Dirty Santa Exploit
Step 9 - After that finishes type "fastboot flash recovery TWRP.img" This will put TWRP (For the H918 Variant) on your device
Step 10 - Boot into TWRP (Remove battery then put it back in hold the Vol - Button and the Power Button Once LG Powered by Android Logo Appears Release the Power Button then Hold it Again, A White screen should come up say yes to both screens then should boot into TWRP)
Step 11 - Now that you are this far I recommend you backup everything so that you can start from this point if you mess up any upcoming steps that way you do not have to reflash the stock image and start from step 1 again....
Step 12 - Select Wipe from the Main menu then go to Format Data then type yes and enter (This will remove the password lock currently enabled on the device)
Step 13 - On the Main Menu select Install browse to your SD Card where you put your SuperSU.zip File onto and flash that to the device
Step 14 - Once that is completed return to the main menu select the Wipe menu again go to Format Data then yes again
Step 15 - Go back to the Wipe Menu and go to Advanced and select Dalvik, Data and Cache then slide to wipe after this finishes reboot to the system
Step 16 - Once in the System complete the Android setup and enable USB Debugging again then type adb reboot recovery (if your device does not boot into Android this is when u go back into TWRP by doing the remove battery method and holding those buttons down as I stated before and you Restore your Backup you made in Step 11 and you try doing those Steps again)
Step 17 - Once Back into TWRP (you may make another backup here if you would like) select Install then Flash SuperSU to your device again... Go back to the Main Menu Select Wipe then Advanced and Select Dalvik and Cache then Slide to Wipe and reboot into the System
Step 18 - Once back into Android you should see SuperSU on your device and you may download a Root Checker app of the Play Store to Make sure your Device is Fully Rooted and Working!
Please inform any Issues in the Replies below and I will add them to the List for People to Know before they Attempt rooting... If anyone finds a Fix for the Modem file to get service working on the LG V20 H915 while rooted please reply and i will Add that to the guide BELOW!
I DID NOT MAKE ANY OF THESE FILES SO PLEASE THANK THE CREATORS (LISTED ABOVE) FOR THEIR HARD WORK AND EFFORTS!
I THINK I BRICKED MY DEVICE/ THE ROOT DID NOT WORK/ I WANT TO GO BACK TO STOCK
Step 1 - As Stated Above to this all we need to do is Enter Download Mode (Remove Battery reinsert battery hold Vol + and plug in the Device) and then run the UPPERCUT.exe File
Step 2 - Select Upgrade browse over to your kdz file and select it then flash it to your device! Your Device Should boot up into Android (I Have Bricked my LG V20 Many Times Removing TWRP and the Bootloader and having nothing but the LG Logo and the Download Mode and I could Still get into the Device after doing this so it should work for you! However any problems should be dealt with the developer on his forum listed here
HTML:

)
Anyone willing to Try installing things like Kernels and ROMs I would assume you would be using H918 Supported Files For those as thats what TWRP is running in.....
Will be adding a Zip File will all the Files need in a Couple of Minutes....
There seems to be a hidden settings menu on our Devices in which we can play around with the Modem Settings among other things.... you need to open the Phone App and Type in *#546368#*915# and the menu should come up.... Maybe somebody can figure out how to get Service running.... All Credit for this goes to @KedarWolf in his post listed here https://forum.xda-developers.com/v20/how-to/access-hidden-menu-h915-t3515098
Nice little write up. Did you try this on the wind/freedom 915 or videotron 915? My guess would be that you tried it on the wind 915 and if so i bet it has something to do with their slightly differnet bands they use albeit for a change an unlocked wind device works fine on other networks. But i really have no clue if there's a connection on why there's no signal. This kind of thing is beyond my pay grade. I would be guessing someone like @autoprime would be someone to ask but chances are he has other things to worry about and likely doesn't have the device.
But keep plugging away. You may figure it out yet

Yes the Wind H915 still haven't got it figured out yet hopefully someone will soon then we will have an official working root for the Canadian Variant
I would have jumped on the Freedom Mobile (formerly Wind) deal ($30 for 6GB for the first 10 months) if the H915 had been root and has an unlocked bootloader. LG's track record of offering unlocked bootloader is looking very bleak for the H915.
@TheDantee I am sure the service issue will be resolved soon but "Seems VERY Laggy" part is worrying me more. What is the reason for that? I like the possibility to go to the default LG rom like nothing happen.

Noob question, is the phone fully functional after step 10 (TWRP).
The reason I ask is because I really only need to get to TWRP as I want to enable google assistant.
At this point, the root is not a big concern for me.
Thanks,

I don't think its SuperSU Causing the problem... In the bootloader (debug) that is provided in the DirtySanta root it states the device as an unlocked US996 LG V20 I feel that this is because it has no idea which provider its with since we are Canadian.. I have tried flashing many many modem files from many different firmwares I either get modem blue screens on boot (Goes away permanently if you remove sim card) or I get no Service in the System it self... so personally I think it is the Bootloader since its a debug bootloader because the Canadian Variant does not seem to have a bootloader.... May I ask what is your reasoning for SuperSU being the issue?

Based on your answer to SHABBA JOTS I get feeling that maybe is SuperSU creating that problem if until step 10 (TWRP) is all good. So soon we do step 8 (flashing boot image) service is gone. Is that right?

He he, I am an Nexus person. I am so afraid to mess up my V20. With Nexus it is so easy, in 2 steps you are done. I miss that part I mast say.
Ok so i gave this a quick read and from what i gather you flash the bootloader before you flash twrp and super su. So here's a question that may or may not have been tried. Is there any reason you can't follow this method to root and then flash stock recovery and then flash stock bootloader?
Since it seems bootloader is the issue with having no data or signal. You would at least have root but just not twrp. Does that make sense?

Well it has to have a bootloader. It's just locked right. Like if we pulled apart the stock kdz we should be able to find it and my theory is we could use flashfire to flash stock recovery and also flash thr bootloader since twrp can't to my knowledge flash bootloaders. We would be left with root but no recovery. I could be so far from being right but who knows. This could be the only way to have root and a working phone.

There's no need to do it the way op did. Download LG Bridge from LG's official site, power up phone into bootloader, flash stock.

Ok Time to break out the Laptop for you guys
After you install LGUP on your PC look in your C: Programs Folder if you have a 64 bit PC you will look in your C: Programs x86 Folder for LG Electronics Folder open it there you will see the LGUP Folder open it until you find the Model Folder there you will place the Common Folder i provided you with in this setup. Now your PC should recognize your phone but first b4 you start the LGUP Program you need to Power off your phone and hold volume up and plug your phone in thus will put your phone into Download Mode. Now you can Start the LGUP Program.
I supplied the .zip with these Installation instructions also
Where you will find the 10r firmware

If anyone can please save the nougat update and put it on your desktop or something before actually applying it so that we can all have nougat instead of waiting for metro to push it? I have tried these steps for the past few days with no avail, and I think it has to do with with the staggering of updates so their server doesn't overload pushing it out to everyone. That would be greatly appreciated
Does this work on 7.0?
As of right now, I just installed Supersu and got root again and am currently setting my phone back up and the 7.0 update appeared. Can I just install the 7.0 update and still have Root or no? If not please let me know what I have to do to keep root. Thank you
you have to be unrooted to take the update

Hello brother . I am a Vietnamese using lg stylo 2 plus home network metro pcs. But I can not use metro pcs in Vietnam. I hope you help unlock the machine to use as international version. thanks so much. : O: O: O: O: O: O: O: O
Look on your phone under a set of Metro PCS apps. There should be one with a key on it called unlock or something like that. Open it up and go through the steps and see if it's allowed to be unlocked by Metro. If that doesn't work then I would try calling Metro and ask them to unlock it. Tell them you're going to Vietnam for a month and need to use your phone. Good luck brother
