Hi all, I'm thinking of installing Android Q, though have never installed a beta before. For a noob like me, should I wait until it's past beta or should it be alright?
Has anyone installed it and if so, how are you finding it?
Sent from my [device_name] using XDA-Developers Legacy app
I am running the Q beta. For the most part, it's working very well, but there's some issues. Some apps are not working normally, or at all. It's a gamble at best. Many beta testers have a 2nd phone to rely on, just in case. And, some will wait until the 2nd or 3rd release before jumping in.

I honestly find this beta rock stable considering it's a beta as its name says. It's my Daily Driver for my Pixel 2.
I will probably wait for dp2/3 like with pie
Its pretty stable, however the battery life is not exactly on point. i do not yet recommend it as a daily driver, however if you want to install it to see new features you can go here https://www.google.com/android/beta to opt in your device and install it like any other OTA update
I'm using it as a daily driver. Honestly i didnt face any issues except for one app (localcast) not working. Battery life is almost the same but sometimes goes wrong and drains for no reason. All in all though its pretty stable.
Dont know if I'll recommend it though, it really depends on how you use it and if all your apps are compatible. For me there are really no extra "features" or speed improvements, just minor things here and there that dont make a big difference overall, I'd stick with Pie if I were you.
Anyone with Android Q DP1 and Magisk?
I've seen some folks with P2XL with it working on the Magisk Canary topic, but no one with the regular Pixel 2.
Anyone using Q notice if the notification sounds are working in Android auto yet? Thanks

installed the beta last night and its holding up pretty well so far 12 hrs in. loving the system wide dark mode (finally) and the battery life is the same as P, so far.
I noticed a couple things that may be reasons to wait until the next update for some folks:
- All my stored wifi passwords were lost immediately upon updating.
- When passing by wifi networks that are saved but do not have the password set mobile data drops and stays off until toggling mobile data on/off. I'm not certain it's wifi related, but each time it happened I was using the phone and noticed xfinitywifi tried to connect and then mobile data dropped.
- Chrome doesn't autofill passwords, latest Chrome beta fixed this so it will eventually be fixed when the next Chrome version drops.

There are a few and the performance is good.
In terms of price, the pixel is pretty damn expensive compared to other android phones with similar specs. Add to that the fact that, in the USA, at least, it was nearly impossible to get one for the longest time and finally, the way the partitioning is set up is quite different that any previous android phones. All these make for some slow development.
It's expensive plus Google's security features are becoming more problematic. The newest bootloader is causing issues with root now.
The real dev device now is OnePlus not googles product anymore.

Was actually my thinking also...
I came to the conclusion, that nobody has this device, and also google is making it hard to develop for the pixel. Working against the dev community with each update.
I am not worried though, because I only need root for my ARISE sound mod ,and backup/restore via Titanium Backup. I'm running completely stock, because that is the fastest, smoothest, most battery friendly setup I could find. Now that (even with a lot of hacking and manual adjustments) both TWRP and root works somehow, I am enjoying my pixel as it is... All these new things, like slots, loosing the recovery partition etc. make this device terrible for flashing. I was used to flashing my phones without a PC for 6-7 years now. I didn't even had to hook them up to the PC, only once, at first recovery flashing.... This is not the case with the pixel..
Maybe if the new partition layout gets picked up by other manufacturers, the problems will be solved quickly. Or even google drops this nonsense with the new pixels, and then we are really doooooomed

Lol...OnePlus are unavailable to release nougat for the OnePlus 2 (SD810+4Gb Ram)
I don't really agree. The development took some time because of all the new features.
We are not really missing any roms, root, twrp or anything I want to be able to do. I see PN, DU, Lineage, OctOS, PixelDust, RR. I mean what other ones you want?
I'll get an OP when they decide to support their devices at least 2 years. They burned enough people with OP2.

Twrp seems abandoned, and the mix and match instructions for getting things to boot and run with magisk etc just seem odd, that's all. I'm sure everything will be figured out with time, but was just honestly curious.

Well the developer works on it when he can. It works fine so we do have it. Will need a new one that can sign the boot image.
Magisk isn't officially support it since developer does not have the device.
New boot signing procedure had a fix in a day or two after Google release. That's not bad. Things are not perfect I agree. Multiple slots are making things the hardest I think.

Probably security more than anything. Don't expect it to pick up anytime soon.
Not sure if I am burned out or just no longer have the desire but I realized I have not flashed a custom ROM since June of this year so I'll be rapidly approaching 6 months and that was for my 5X. This Pixel 2 I have left stock and the Pixel 1 I had, I made it stock back in June after flashed for a few months.
I have a few mods that I use, but for the most part this Pixel 2 is stock unrooted. I think part of it is being able to also do updates without issues. Ever since the Pixel 1, I could never update stock without wiping. Whenever I'd try to flash individual files or remove the -w flag, it would still wipe. Pixel 2 works fine, battery life has been incredible so probably no changes in the near future.
Plus getting root is getting harder. I don't use Android Pay, but I stopped using magisk over the summer. Too much back and forth.
I plan on keeping my Pixel 2 stock, probably as long as Google actively supports it (at least 3 years they say...). The main reason I switched to the Pixel line was Google's frequent updates and the lack of the need to constantly be flashing a different ROM, etc.
I am very happy with Google's software experience. In the past I mostly ran custom ROMs on my Samsung devices to get away from the Samsung bloat/UI. With Motorola it was primarily due to the lack of software support from Lenovorola. So far the Pixel 2 in its stock form is exactly what I have wanted from my previous devices, without modification.
mines stock besides bootloader unlock, magisk, and custom kernel to pass safetynet
love it. fast, responsive, and best battery life in any phone i've ever had
I just got mine and mines stock too. I used custom ROMS because OEMs never updated their ROM. I'm hoping I won't have to flash to a custom ROM for the next 3 years.
Stock but running Dev preview. The ab partitions seem like more trouble than it's worth. Having owned G6 as well as the s8+ on TMobile. I just feel incentive to root is just not there anymore. As much as the AB partitions are a pain I absolutely love how fast updates are. Like holy sht less than 5 minutes and all is up and well.
The only reason why I would root is because of the possibility to change the system fonts !
I really like to have my favourite fonts on the phone !
Otherwise, I'm happy to stay stock !
I have been using "Google phones" since the Nexus S. The Pixel 2 is the first one I have left completely stock.
Android Oreo is fine the way it is for me. Battery life is great, I block ads through my own VPN connection so I really have no reason to unlock it and root it.
I just sideload the monthly updates and everything just works. I am very happy with it.
The stock 8.0 on the 5X has been pretty bad although it's possible if I factory reset it, it may be better, but it has just worked poorly but I have not formatted since June just rolled it up.
8.0 on the Pixel 2 has worked fine without any issues. The updates on time and frequency is probably the biggest appeal for me. There was one LG I had a few years ago that got updates for 12 months. Never changed past Lollipop. Just released with Lollipop then patches for 12 months then that was it. Unacceptable.
I still don't fully understand the A/B partitions after they removed the recovery factory. There's slot A/B, but I'm not sure how to manage them, I just let TWRP flash whatever.....that's part of it too, I can't keep up with the constant changes.
I use stock on all my google phones. I used to root, mainly to block ads, but I'm using dns66 on my Pixel 2 and it seems good enough.
I use to root my Android to access the Magisk or Xposed. But I decided to keep my Pixel 2 as long as possible. Part of the reason is that I am still waiting Google to roll out the hotfix for some minor but annoying bug like bluetooth headset compatibility problem. Another reason is I think I can live with some non-root required customization app like Custom Navigation Bar or Shortcutter now.
Considering that the daily SoT I get with this device is more than what I need:
I might end up opening the bootloader in the future to put a more aggressive performance kernel that kills more battery.
But for now I'll stay stock. Last two Nexus I've owned were rooted to have Pixel Launcher with Now Card left menu.
Sent from my Pixel 2
I use mine stock with Nova launcher. I have rooted and flashed all my phones in the past but with this one, I don't feel the need to. It's really fast and the battery is great.
My Pixel 1 is unlocked but I ended up running stock towards the end of my use. Updates weren't that hard when I was unlocked, just a lot of steps to follow (download OTA, flash in TWRP, immediately flash TWRP, flash root, flash any mods, reboot).
My Pixel 2 is Verizon so I don't really have a choice about root now. I hope I can live with it.
Sent from my Pixel 2 using Tapatalk
I'm running unlocked and rooted only because I find I can typically get better battery life using custom kernels (using flash kernel right now, standby battery drain much improved), as well as for adblocking and viper4android (whenever it gets fixed for enforcing kernels, works on permissive however).
I doubt I will ever want/need to flash a custom rom on this phone though.
I just switched to Pixel 2 from years of HTC phones, which have similar smoothness, but the only way to get super-quick updates with HTC, even the developers' edition, is with custom ROMs. Now that I have the Pixel 2, I'll try to keep it stock for as long as I can.
Sent from my Pixel 2 using Tapatalk
PIXEL 2 is good as is. I usually root for increased battery and volume, but this phone is good as is. Also found Xperia keyboard which I love. In fact the pixel 2 acts rooted and experimental even though it is released. Camera comes and goes sometimes quick pictures, other times black screen and fault. Hopefully an update or two will resolve issues.

Hello, I got the H2OS Open Beta 14 update a day ago and it's been a terrible experience since. Amazon, Google, Google Go, and most other apps that I use crash just after they're launched. I also saw a few people say that they face app crashes on the latest OxygenOS Open Beta but I can't confirm for sure. This issue was not present in the previous builds. What's the most hassle-free way to get out of this situation? Any help would be greatly appreciated!
Are you a beta tester for the Google Play Services app? If yes, go back to the stable channel, update the app and see, if there's a difference. Last time I had an app crashing issue, it was exactly because of GPS, so it might be the culprit in your case too.
On other note: why H2OS?

Thank you for the quick response! I keep my GPS off most of the times and no, I'm on the stable channel already. Seems like the build has bugs (no surprise since it's beta)
And I bought my OP6 from a friend who wanted money for the 6T, he had given it to me with H2OS. I have a lot of experience with flashing, so I guess switching to OOS is the only solution here. Any good guides on it btw? Because I've heard that you can switch from Oxygen to H2 easily but the other way around is a bit messy.

Google Play Services (GPS - not Global Positioning System ;D) is a vital part of the Google ecosystem, so you can't really have it off if you're using Google apps
But yeah, since it's most probably not the app's fault, I'm not sure where the issue lays - switching to OOS might indeed be a good idea. And as @whizeguy said, the process is easy no matter what you're switching to/from.
EDIT: Actually, could you please check, if you have the newest version of Webview installed (whether or not it needs to be updated)? If it's disabled, then just ignore this, if it isn't however, and it does need an update, then update it and see, if that helps.

It's been out for a while now, was wondering if it is stable enough for daily use. I've tried to search but there isn't a tread on actual stability for daily use. Thanks
beta 4 should be out in a few days, may as well wait.
I had beta 3 on my 3XL, but reverted back to Pie. Phone was always running uncomfortably hot and the battery seemed to drain fairly quickly. Last night, I shut my phone completely off at 30%. This morning, I tried to power it on and it was completely drained. I placed it on the pixel stand and it showed that I had 0% battery. After reverting back to Pie, the phone no longer runs hot.
It is for me.
It ran very smooth for me but I couldn't live without root, so I went back to Pie.

I was getting FC with a high amount of apps
It's been running fine for me. A few little glitches such as the display not turning on when I lift the phone, but that is more of an irritation than a reason to not use it. Although as stated earlier, beta 4 will drop in a few days, so might as well wait for that.
For the most part it's good. The real big issue I've had is the snapchat/camera bug. I'll take a snap, and it'll turn all pixelated and everything, close it, then try again and it says the camera is not responding, and if you go to the camera app it doesn't work either. Great camera, but its glitchy as all hell.
ok its been a day since I installed beta 3 and yes its running fine , battery life seems better as well. I use my work for work with work emails and I don't feel like reverting back. Android Q is pretty awesome. I have noticed Netflix working but there are screen jitters.
My honest suggestion is to wait for beta 4 which should have completed most of the errors.

This is the one thing I agree with so far. A LOT of my normal apps just either won't run or randomly close. Just basic apps and the known issue with having syncing issues with banking apps is really hard to take.
Been on since the 1st beta, been stable enough for my usage this far.
I have come back on foot, it is slow, there are many failures, especially with Google services, etc ...to see beta 4 that will come out soon
I have been running the Beta and no issues works fine for me as daily driver.
I've never had any force closing of any of my apps on beta 3. Then again, I did do a clean install of it.
Works pretty much perfectly for me. No FC of apps, very fast and the battery life is great. I DID wipe on P before taking the beta 2 update, then took the 3 OTA. I think going dirty from P to Q is what is causing so many problems for people. I would definitely wipe either on P or when you grab Q. Normally I would say on P, then setup all apps since that helps a ton with them working correctly on early betas, but, 4 should work with most apps at this point.
The only thing I'm not entirely happy with is the full gestures. The partial swipe up and hold for recents kind of sucks. I have to turn it off then on again daily to keep it working. Also, I think full/quick swipe up should be for recents, and either a second swipe or the swipe and hold for apps. The former is how it works on 2 button and it's soooo much better.

Banking apps by and large fail to work.
I've just received the beta 4 update ?
Been on the beta since the first one was released on my daily driver. No serious issues at all. Beta 4 is almost the final version (final API:s) of Android 10.
It's snappier than Pie ever was and the gestures are great.

This is my 2nd OP phone, first was the OPO. Couldn't believe how much life I squeezed out of that phone, and by most accounts OP has been good about keeping their old phones updated and usable.
Instead we've had broken Android 10 on the OP6 for months. Did something change at OP? Between this, unstable TWRP on the 7t, and unlocked bootloader issues with the McLaren, it seems like they DGAF anymore.

Its always a good practice to factory reset after a major update. My brother's Galaxy M30 was lagging after the recent Android 10 update but factory reset made it fine again. So maybe it might work for you as well

This is a stock ROM. I never mess with custom ROMs on OnePlus devices. And the mere fact that I'm using TWRP and Magisk should not break the UI. It never has on any other phone I've had going back to the HTC Evo 4G. On every other phone, stock performs the same whether or not it's rooted. If that's no longer the case with OP then that's another reason to reconsider paying $6-700 for their phones.
Not sure.. But Oneplus literally screwed this device with their Android 10 update.

You might add that TWRP doesn't have anything to do with the ROM, and Magisk is fully systemless, so without active modules, this shouldn't be able to break anything ...

This. Bump!
I even didnt try update to 10...
Rarly came here due lack of interesting new things....except Gcam....
Happy with 9.0.9 and period. Root + TWRP + xXx rom for ViperSound.
Everything works, don`t touch more.
But i really feel OP already left this device to abandon......such a shame.
Or, due to many models, the team is the same with lot more work, anyway we all suffer lack of confidence in them. Or at least me.
Camera, sound =piece of crap
I think all you cant complain about Op support. Say me which brand dice you Active and fresh support on devices older than 2 years.

I don't understand what is your expectation when you say OP has abandoned this device? They worked towards providing Android 10 update, but it was your choice to not to install it. People reported bugs and stability issues in Android 10 update, and OP has worked and fixed many of them, and they are still working on it (been using Android 10 since beta and at current state, very much satisfied with it). But is not beneficial as you have chosen not to use it. If you like using rooted ROM with mods installed, and if your expectation is that OP provides you the mod functionalities in the ROM (if that's what you expect), that doesn't mean they are not working at all on this device. If you are happy with older ROM and do not wish to upgrade, then I don't understand why complain about OP not providing anything new?
Camera and sound are not up to the mark, for Camera, even with GCam I don't find the image quality satisfactory. And this is a major drawback of this phone, and only solution is to buy a phone from some other manufacturer, like Samsung which is better in these aspects (at least that's what I could think of for my next purchase)
Apologies if I sounded rude anywhere.
I'm running the first version of Android 10 that was released and the only issue I have encountered is the black screen while trying to unlock the phone. That's easily circumvented by just pressing the power button to turn the phone off and then back on and done. I've had this phone since launch and it has by far had more updates than any other OnePlus device that I have owned. I have been a faithful customer since the OnePlus 3 and I have owned every device since
OP here. 10 3.1 fixes nearly every issue I was having with Android 10. I'm rooted and running the latest TWRP and having no issues at all except for the space under the keyboard, which is an easy fix. Furthermore it looks like a lot of the issues I was having were with Android itself, not OOS. In any case I hereby withdraw my criticisms of OnePlus' handling of this. Great work, team.
I will also add that I recently acquired a OP7Pro, and while it is a great phone, Android 10 is just as glitchy and 98% of the time it does not feel any faster than the OP6.
