Android Q for PH-1 - Essential Phone Guides, News, & Discussion

I'm sotra suprised no one else has posted about this before me (atleast that I've seen.)
https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.techradar.com/amp/news/android-q-confirmed-for-the-essential-phone
Any thoughts or ideas on when we might be seeiung a release for us?

Maybe not in a separate thread, but it was definitely noted and mentioned before in other threads. It was great to hear Essential was committed to releasing the Q for this phone. As for the timeline, I doubt anyone would be able to answer that question, other than just trying to guess. Personally, I'd be more interested in the subsequent updates after the initial release - how many and for how long...

I agree with you about the million dollar question. Essential has stated from the beginning that we could expect updates to or through Q. What exactly that means is anyone's guess?
Going with a pure hunch, I believe that we will continue to see updates for quite some time. I have nothing of substance to base this on but it would be in their best interest. I think Essential runs real close to stock AOSP so I don't think there is much coding involved.. I guess only time will tell.

If past beta and stable releases are any sign of when it might be released, I'd guess shortly after it's officially released by Google.

It's worth noting that we got Android P on DAY 1 of the release just like the Pixel phones. My bet is we get it the same way for Q. Patience...it will happen!

We actually started on release 2 of the P beta. But that's when they allowed other devices to join the beta for the first time. I'm betting we'll get release 2 for Q as well. Only thing I'm worries about is lack of root.

No problem! I was referring to the actual release of Android P and not the beta releases. We got the actual release on Day 1 just like the Pixel phones.
Personally I don't much care to take part in the betas because I need a stable device. I spent nearly the past three years (until July of last year) on an "un-rootable" AT&T Samsung Galaxy Note 5. It made me appreciate being able to count on my device to just work the way it was meant to work. For the first time since my first Android phone, the Samsung Captivate, I stayed on the stock rom and I had to admit to myself that I didn't really miss root.
Please don't think I think badly about anyone that wants to run alternative roms or root their device. Not long after I got the PH-1, I was using invisiblek's Lineage OS 15.1 unrooted until the release Android P came along. That rom plus the neutrino kernel was rock solid for me for a while!

Like pie we will get the beta on second build . (I'm guessing)
Interesting read if I'm right.

Yeah, just read about that earlier... Sounds encouraging. :good:

I messaged Essential on Twitter. To my delight I got a reply. In short no Beta for Q now but that could change in the future. Essential indicated I should stay in touch with their social posts and website. I know there was no commitment but am glad the company seems involved in the phone still and follow their social feeds.

I've installed it on my phone but unfortunately it really isn't usable now... WiFi, BT, sensors are not working there are also app incompatibility, especially with file managers. I guess we'll just have to wait for an official beta from Essential.

Well that's frustrating. I thought Treble was supposed to be more friendly than that. At one point Google said it would allow for like manufacturers such as Qualcomm to be able to use a driver update mechanism to address these sorts of hardware breakages. Like it could be a totally seamless upgrade path.

Well looks like its Google's fault at the moment. maybe because Q is still in beta. Many things are broken even for Pixel Phones.

[REQ]Motorola Android 6.0 Soak Test

Hi. Me and the other developers have been trying to get our hands on the new Android 6.0 boot.img. If anyone is running the soak test people please PM me.
Thanks
Shawn
Did they actually start the soak test, or is it still the test drive?
Does it benefit you that much to have a pre release version? If you want to make roms, why wouldn't you wait until the final version of the software is released? I know that, usually, a soak is very similar to a final release (and who knows with these "test drives"), but not always. And since the 5.0 botched release caused several problems, why wouldn't you wait?
None of us got it. Unless the few people who beta-tested it not (soak tested) it.
Its against NDA so no one will bother

Could be that no one has it. Remember it is a small test group that got it. Soak is not live yet (maybe). Plus people agreed to be quiet about it so even if we got an invite it wont be public. Either way we all will have fun in a few weeks

Its going to be stock android 6 + moto assist, and android 6 is a refinement of the already stable android 5.1.
Want to know what it will be like? Watch this and imagine there is a moto assist app in the app drawer

LOL. Thanks. Already familiar with MM from my N6, more curious about the specifics of MM on the MXPE test drive, such as stability, doze improvements on our hardware, completeness, etc

Well it was too prepare. They want to get a mostly stable version before they push it to the super soakers to make sure the 5.0 bricking disaster doesn't happen again. From what I have read we do NOT want them to rush things. Once it is safe the soakers will get it and then everyone. As long as it is within a month I do not mind if it means smooth and mostly bug free
I welcome the caution of Motorola. Or maybe they are already soak testing but the group members are so good they are keeping it on the DL

apparently they had a mess on their hands and they had to unlock their bootloaders and do all this stuff to fix their devices. Not sure all the details but I'm sure some users can testify to how messy it was.

I can confirm the 5.0 disaster ... It was Lollipop massacre ... It happened on the Moto G (First Gen), one of the first moto device to receive the lollipop update through Soak test ... the image was leaked and people started flashing them, there were some minor bugs in the image, and whenever people tried to get to stable kitkat, or stock Rom in order to get official update their phone got permanently bricked ...
There are major changes in the Bootloader during the major android updates, so it's best to take precautions and wait patiently till someone confirms a proper procedure .
I can confirm the soak test isn't fake.
Didn't want to share this whatever.

Android Nougat update now rolling out for Motorola Z and Z Force on Verizon

According to posts from gsmarena , techtimes and androidcentral and many more Verizon Moto Z and the Moto Z Force have been receiving OTA update for Android Nougat 7.0.
Hopefully soon we all get it as well.
Wow, so a carrier beat the OEM to the release? What did Lenovo do to Motorola?
The verizon z line has been for months before oem. So not that surprising. It had to happen sometime

It's hard to post something that doesn't exist. The reports come from, what, maybe five people? And those people haven't posted a single screenshot of the new OS except for a settings page that is easily faked. There is no update. Moto paid those people to claim that they got the update to get good press.

Moto is pretty serious about their confidentiality agreements when it comes to soak tests. They would ban me from future soak tests if I did that. And I like being in on soak tests. Plus, it only took them like two days to make it official and widen the rollout. You guys will have an update zip very soon I guarantee it.

Yes !!!! I'm pretty excited, but for anyone not in Korea I don't think it'll be coming till 2020, since Carriers will take as long as they want, in implementing their own stuff or Pie will be only for Korea, unless a Rep for America confirms this.

I thought the phone was just put on the EOL list.
I'll believe it when I see it.
Ok...well with them changing there mind...this just makes me wonder. I have two other Ls997's on ZVD and was wondering if it is even worth hoping for a root option one day or if I should just push the updates on em. Or if there is a magical option that is able to be tested on one of them for root access? It has been awhile is another reason of why I ask. I just don't want to keep waiting for nothing in other words.

Pretty much development is over for the V20 the devs who worked on unlocking the bootloader, gaining root, have all moved on. I'd say it's probably safe to say that root for the LS997 on later security patches isn't going to happen.
Sent from my LG-H910 using XDA Labs
IF it even ACTUALLY happens, I suspect it'll only be for the Korean variants of the older phones, including the V20.
As it stands, the V20 is still listed as EOL alongside the G5 on their official security page.
If it comes to the Korean variants only, then it honestly wouldn't surprise me. LG has a track record of giving a certain degree of exclusivity to their Korean variants on both the hardware and software side.
I couldn't really care less though, tbh. By Q3 of this year LOS 16.x will be stable and that's STILL going to be a better experience than anything we've ever seen on the stock side from LG.
I'm also left wondering why the previous-gen devices like the V35 are scheduled to get it before the V40, for example. There could be a reason for it, but from where I sit it seems simply odd.
Or, maybe I'll be totally wrong and this is that elusive "software centre" they announced a while back finally coming to fruition.
IMO, at the moment, this thread (and especially its title) is misleading at best.

Apart from one of the most important ones, emdroidle (responsible for bringing DirtySanta to the H990/DS) who recently became active on XDA again.
He's also be fairly active behind the scenes on the LOS Gerrit.
None of the devs that were active when I started using LineageOS about a year ago now have left as far as I'm aware.
We (almost) just got LOS 16.x, and we've already gained the unlocked bootloader and root, there's no need for ongoing support in order to maintain those.

No update for oneplus 7 5g on EE?

Hi all,
I think enough time has passed for those on EE to get an update, absolutely no sign whatsoever and not entirely sure where or who will be providing the update; has any one has success updating yet?
I'm currently on 9.5.1 and system updates fail constantly.
Is there an option to root and install a custom ROM?I'd rather do that then wait for EE/Oneplus.

I've just had a lengthy (about 1h30m) chat to OnePlus and they were totally useless. I saved the chat history as a lot of the things were basically - reboot the phone, wipe cache and then finally erase everything; although I knew these steps would not work and I explained I had already tried that I done it anyway just to satisfy his requests.
Afterwards he pretty much said "Ah well, nothing more we can do then"
I find it hard to believe that between EE and OnePlus no body has the answer?

Hi all,
I think enough time has passed for those on EE to get an update, absolutely no sign whatsoever and not entirely sure where or who will be providing the update; has any one has success updating yet?
I'm currently on 9.5.1 and system updates fail constantly.
Is there an option to root and install a custom ROM?I'd rather do that then wait for EE/Oneplus.

Mines updated to 9.5.3 on release day 30/5/19 nothing since 4g up to 9.5.7 with camera improvements yet us mugs who bought the best one going getting left behind
Sooner the exclusive deal comes to an end the better
Upgrade it to a international model and ditch EE tweaked rom

Did you try the oxygen updater via playstore?

While that is a possibility, why pay more to have 5G when we'd be losing 5G functionality if we convert to an international model.

I'm still on 9.5.1 and it won't update to 9.5.3. I haven't tried the Oxygen updater; I'll give that a go!

I mean once the international 5g rom comes out you'll not lose anything then

Tried Oxygen updater and still no joy, unfortunately!
What does it say? Up to date or just update failing?.
Just failing still ?. Same error message as always
Seems to me that OnePlus has pulled the update for some reason.
Mine updated to 5.3 when I first set it up.
Not really had to many issues with mine, no ghost touches or anything. All I've had is the odd crash on nova launcher when exiting my banking app for some reason but other than that not much to complain about.
That being said I would like to see the camera updates that are being talked about in 5.7 as these are supposed to make a significant difference to the pictures.

Bloody strange... Surely if it's failing to update its defective.
I just find it hard to believe its a flagship device and know one knows what the hell is going on.

There are also people on the EE forums with the same problem.
I'm sure EE knows what's up here, but reaching the "right people" there is probably very hard.
It's a phone with essentially a "Beta" radio, using effectively "Beta towers", and I bet that they're gating the updates, carefully, based on that fact.
In time, I'm sure this will "smooth out", as 5G becomes a bit more proliferated, but right now, if you have a 5G phone, you're effectively a "Beta Tester", IMO, even IF the carrier doesn't "sell it" like that...
It's too bad they didn't abstract the builds a bit more, across the OP7, OP7 Pro (several variants), and the OP7 Pro 5G.
I bet OP will do some work here, as things evolve, to "limit" this issue. It's possible too, that they already did this, and EE "botched things", in terms of the carrier-development side, good luck figuring that out though, or getting anyone to admit it...
I returned my phone to EE as it wouldn't update (just said it was up to date, but on 9.1) and I started suffering numerous ghost touches and random crashes.
Unless Op / EE get this sorted, I suspect I'll go to 3 when they launch 5g in August

Yeah, it's a **** state of affairs. How long ago did you get the phone, on day of launch?
Oh, just as side note. I searched on Google for days for an answer and nothing came up. One search on Duck Duck Go and the second and 3rd post are full of people with the exact same problem.
Yes, I got mine on launch day. Gave it the befit of the doubt she allowed 3 days to get an update- nothing turned up and it was pretty un-useable due to the ghost touches.
That's when I told them to take it back

Android 10?

Who wants to guess when official Android 10 will drop? I'm going to say it will be sometime early next week!
you mean Android Q
I don't care, I will not change the naming scheme even if it's official.
I can't believe they stopped the dessert naming scheme
Absolutely disappointed
I'm going to say first week of Oct
Whenever the 7T is released
7T will be shipped with Android 10. For OP7 pro, who knows. I'd expect fast update.

That's not that far from beta4 to stable. I'm pretty sure Oneplus is working on stable 10 now.
Rumours say Sept. 3rd:
https://www.neowin.net/news/android-10-is-reportedly-launching-on-september-3
https://www.phonearena.com/news/Android-10-release-date-confirmed-official-Pixel_id118451
I'm guessing Open Beta will be around the end of this week.
OP will preserve the update for the new flagship (T) I guess. Normaly within a view days after release they stable updates will be availeble for the previous devices from the same release year.
This could be soon after 27 sept (presentation OP7T and OP7T Pro en OP TV.)
For now latest Developer Preview is out DP4. From this version on you can update via OTA to bèta builds. So you can try it but dont expext everything is working fine. Its still a preview. If you only want stable builds I presume you need to wait to the beginning of october.

He "doesn't like the new naming scheme". Let him stay in his bubble, it's fine. When the time comes and we're all referring to new builds by numbers (as Google is intending), he'll be stuck on letters still and we'll just sit back with our popcorn and laugh. I completely understand Google's reasoning behind it and even after being disappointed at first, the change makes sense. They said that not all desserts were recognized globally and not all regions have certain letters or know what order they come in. I just read an article the day that I found out about the news, if I can find it, I'll link it.
Edit: this isn't the exact article I was referring to, but close enough. https://www.google.com/amp/s/www.th...ficially-announced-new-logo-wordmark-desserts
Queen's Cake
I really do not care what they call it.
I do know last year One Plus release Android "9" really fast.
We had it long before the Samsung losers.
You want the fastest updates Pixel but at least last year One Plus was pretty fast.

What are the chances the 7 Pro 5G will get 10 at same time as 4G version, we have seriously been lacking updates and still missing a lot of fixes that 4G version has plus still on June Security patch

It is rumoured that Oneplus is going to release Android 10 for OP7 Pro in October or November 2019. I think that's possible. We can be sure one thing - that will be faster than Lineage.

I guess 5G version is not popular and that's the reason. Until now, I did not even know about any 5G version

I mean I got the August security update 1 day before the Google devices did, so you never know, it may be fast
