Help sm-g955u screen wont light up after it wakes - Samsung Galaxy S8+ Questions & Answers
First of all I appreciate any and all help on this matter. My problem is simple yet the solution escapes me. My phone starts up fine works fine and there are no problems....until I wake it up from sleep. The phone itself comes on and I can tell that the screen wakes up, but there's no blacklight, just a very dark home screen. So far the only annoying thing i have to do is reset it and it works fine again....until it goes back to sleep. I guess my question is, is this an issue that can be resolved (software). Or is it unfixable without screen replacement (hardware).
You need to test a few things beforehand.
Does it only produce this issue if the screen times out, or by manually pressing the power key to turn the screen off, or both?
Does the screen appear dim when you wake it up via the power button, hard pressing the home button to wake, or using your fingerprint scanner to turn on and unlock your device or a combination of those listed?
I would try safe mode.
You can boot into safe mode by following the below instructions:
1. Power off your device in question
2. Press and hold the power button to turn on the phone
3. When the Samsung logo disappears, release the power key and press and hold the volume down key
4. Continue holding the volume down key until the phone has finished restarting
5. You should now be in safe mode and can verify by looking in the bottom left of the screen for text that states you're in safe mode
After you have successfully booted into safe mode you need to allow your screen to turn off manually, automatically, or both(whichever results in a dim screen when normally booted up) when testing the below steps.
Turn your screen on via the power button and see if the issue remains.
Turn your screen on via the hard press to wake home button (not sure if this is available from safe mode, but worth a try) and see if the issue remains.
Turn your screen on via the fingerprint sensor (not sure if this works from safe mode either) and see if the issue remains.
If all successfully turn on the screen with normal brightness then I would say it's more than likely NOT a hardware issue. If one or the other does not produce normal screen brightness then it's more than likely hardware. If all result in a dim screen then it could be either hardware or corrupt software.

The problem is reproduced irregardless of the method used to put the phone to sleep. I will give it a try in safe mode tonight. I also wanted to add that randomly the screen will power on normally but never on the first wake attempt.

Let me know the results of safe mode once you have tried that.

It still reproduces the problem in safe mode. i tried to wake it with the power button, home buttonand the fingerprint sensor... also under forced sleep mode and letting it time out itself.

At this point, it's more than likely hardware but because it's intermittent you could try using Odin to flash firmware. I would advise you to look to the appropriate forum for instructions. And as always, if you have the ability then backup the data you wish to keep, do it prior to flashing the software.

Well I figured it out. there was damage to the sensor that determines how light or dark it is. If I cover the top part of the screen with my finger then wake the device, it comes on every time. I hope this helps other people out in the future.

Try this then:
Under display settings turn off "Block accidental touches"
See if that results in not having to block your sensor every time.

turning off the XDA EXEC
Hello How does ont turn off the XDA EXEC, i dont see any off button. the power button just turns the screen backlight on and off. the reason why i wanted to know what it was is because i am porting my number across networks, and 02 told me to turn off my phone a number of times during the day, so that it could go into a boot up process.
There is no real way to trurn the device off, but what they will be wanting you to do is disable the phone section (do this by turning on flight mode, or by clicking on the green connections manager in the bottom and click on the phone button. Click the phone button again to turn it on.)
Start -> Programs - Wireless Manager -> All Off (This switches of the phone. Then use the phone on/off button at the top of the screen there, to switch it back on and force your SIM to re-register with the network, which should have the desired effect your after.
Taking out the battery is the only real 'off' button.

did you try holding the power button as well? that works on my wizard not sure if it's true for all wm5 though

There remains a bug, it seems, that sometimes prevents the backlight from firing up when starting the device. It used to happen on my XDA2i and still happens on my Exec. I usually have to get it in a good light and go to settings and move the brightness slider to get it working. Turning off the device, I find, is actually achieved by pressing the power switch before closing lid. I find I get much more out of each charge if I do this rather than just close the lid. That of course turns of the PDA functionality of the device. The radio (phone) service is still disabled via Flight Mode. :wink:

thanks for the reply i guess by pressing the power button, the pda goes ito some sort of sleep mode, since it does not boot up later, correct? when it is charging up using a usb cable connected to my pc, the backlight is turned of, and no amount of pressing buttons seems to turn on the backlight, is that correct? i checked out the brightness level sliders, there are 2, the 1. on battery which is somewhere in between 2. on power which is "slided" to the left, is that its correct position?
you will probably find it will selfboot at midnight.. this appears to have been intentional in the design of all the XDA's. Thia can be a nuisance but it is probably to do with reseting timers. alarms etc The backlight is configured to be on/off during external power and on battery in which ever setup you choose. The actual levels you set it at are your choice .. I set mine to be off after 5 mins on external power i.e. when charging except when i use tomtom and want it to stay on whilst externally powered. On these occasions I change the setting before the journey Your original question with reference to O2 making changes that required you phone to be off, in my experience, means not having the O2 sim in the device.

Power button problem
My power button has started acting funny... when I press it it doesn't work. And worse, it turns the screen on and off by itself (like I was pushing it). Also sometimes the back button takes screenshots instead of "back". For the moment I use a setting in ViperS that allows me to turn the screen on with VolUp and and off with VolDown, and also attributed another action to the power button so it doesn't turn the screen on and off by itself (with Button Remapper). The problem appeared when I was on Bruce's CM10 (though i don't think this is the problem), and then I hardly flashed ViperS. Has anyone had this problem? Any solutions? I hope this isn't hardware related... (It isn't under warranty)
did you check if the back cover is pushing the button somehow and it is always pressing the contact for screen off/on the device?

This application blocks the ringer mode to avoid changing the mode when the phone is locked (screen on) this is a workaround for the following strange behavior / bug on stock android 4.2+: Note: my phone uses a pattern to unlock screen. - Steps to reproduce the problem. 1.Lock the phone, and light the screen with power button. 2.Long press power button until the power off menu appears. 3.Press the power button to close the screen. - What happened. 4.After that, every time the screen is lighted (but not unlocked), press the volume keys can change the volume though no music is playing at all. The volume keys keep working each time I turn on the screen without unlocking, and it is back to normal when I unlock the phone use the unlock pattern and lock again. - What you think the correct behavior should be. The volume keys should not work at all when the phone is showing lock screen, it has accidentally muted my phone and led to missed calls. This is worse than power off menu it self. Since power off menu only appears with long press, but when ever the menu appears once, the volume keys work every time until I re-lock the phone. And also I don't think the power off menu should appear by long pressing during locking state, since it is quite possible that the power button can be long pressed even in my pocket during taking the phone in or out. My nexus 5 repeatedly going to silent mode
Hi My nexus 5 running into issues again. . It automatically goes to silent mode. After increasing the volume again it goes back to silent mode. I can see the volume bar decreasing from full to vibration in front my eyes. Also sometimes the power button won't work for sometime. If I tried to reboot, it automatically goes into recovery mode without pressing any combination of keys. Once I press volume button it goes into one of the recovery settings and gives a message NO COMMAND After multiple hits of power button or some combination will boot the phone into safe mode sometimes.. Now I am stuck with its issue of automatically turns into vibration mode. I am worried to reboot bcause it may stuck in recovery. Any solution... I used to have this issue in lollipop and got fixed in marshmallow.. But recent patch fix update in December gives the problem again. . Please someone help or forward to a thread which helps to clear this problem,m
Sounds like you may have a sticky power and volume button. Maybe open up the phone and swab around the buttons with a bit of alcohol, then rapidly press and release the buttons using slightly more pressure than normal. Not too much pressure though.
Cannot enter download mode / bootloader with broken power button
I have a really big issue. After attempting to get into recovery mode with my S7 which has a broken power button due to water damage it tried to install a system update despite I didn't perform any update and now it shows no command and kicks me into recovery mode but I cannot choose any option because my power button is broken. I've also tried holding Volume Down + Home Button but when entering download mode I cannot proceed when pressing Volume Up. Nothing happens and I can only get out of there when holding Volume Down for 5-10 seconds and the the first mentioned thing happens again. Is there anything I can do without replacing the damaged part?
Take your back panel off and try fixing your power key manually. However taking your back panel off will remove your IP68 water resistance.

Click to collapse The back panel has already been replaced once (but improperly) by the previous owner and it already has a tiny gap at the top of the phone, so no water resistance anymore. I'll try it out when I can. Thx for your answer

Click to collapse I've the same problem, but it happened after my S7 turned off because the battery reached 0% (I was sleeping). My power button is also broken, and volume up doesnt work in download mode, but it was working fine in Android.
