[Q] I dislike Lollipop - Can we talk about Cyanogenmod11?

After using lollipop for a while, I feel cut off. I used CM7 some years ago and it served me well on my old Ideos X5. So im thinking about giving CM11 a try, hoping to regain some features I do miss right now. Here's specifically what I miss and try to regain:
xposed Greenify module. Dramatically increased my battery life.
xposed xPrivacy module. I preffer to actively choose if and which data may be available to an app.
Buildin Audio Recording (Lollipop seems to have dropped this)
Buildin Photo widget (Lollipop seems to have dropped this). There are some available, but it feels bad to need to buy one if my system os used to have this feature.
GameCIH(Needs Dalvik). Cheating/Debugging tool for apps, mostly games.
What I definately do not want to miss(Does CM11 support these features?):
Immersive mode - For not accidently hitting that "Home-Button" when playing games.
Google Now. Very handy thing.
Updating capabillity or at least notifications on important updates being available. I do not want to have to visit a specific community regulary just in order to see if my phone has a major security/stabillity issue
Also, how's the stabillity of the hammerhead snapshots? Any hardware issues or mentionable glitches? I used CM7 years ago and was not very pleased, but that may not be representative. Are there downsides when it comes to everyday usage?

almost ALL cm based rom have immersive mode. And also, it has ALL of the features that you've mentioned above.
It worth it !

Stop comparing stuff to cm7 (which BTW, had more bloat than any other ROM). That was GB-based.
Instead of asking if feature X or Y is available today, just try it for yourself.

Need help finding a ROM for my OPO (maybe)

I've spent literally days and days reading through threads about various ROMs, I'm hoping someone who has more experience with OPO ROMs than me can point me in the right direction - looking for a solid ROM with these features baked in:
Good ad blocker
Privacy guard
Best or close to best battery life
Can set system font
Solid : doesn't crash or have nasty wakelocks / memory leaks - want a phone that spends most of it's time nicely SLEEPING when it's in my pocket
Most of the ROMs I've looked at seem to be missing one or more of those basic features? I was thinking CM 12S will be good, but then was reading about layers and they were saying the CM theme engine is not so good in terms of security or efficiency compared to the layers theming system?
I like CM 11S pretty well at this point, but I realy want to get behind (support/use) a great ROM that comes with something like AdAway pre-installed because I want to see good ad blockers included (built into) more ROMs and I want to support that. It's deeply discouraging to me when I can't find a great ROM with ad blocking baked in. Same with Privacy Guard - I don't think any ROM should come without Privacy Guard or equivalent baked in!!!
Thank you so much for your help/advice - believe me, I HAVE searched and read many threads, but I expect there are thousands of other people who have had their OPOs for weeks or months longer than me and can give me some solid advices!
Please resist the urge to simply tell me "Just try ROMs for yourself bro!" - I have done that before (on my Galaxy S3) I probably tried about 30 - 40 diff ROMs on that phone. At the moment, I look and read when I can, but before I flash I'd like to know if there are least a couple that at least have those basic features, and if not, I wonder why?
My best guess at this point is, I will need to stay with CM 11S and ad Xposed? I used Xposed a couple different times, but most recently it broke - the device still works, just Xposed was no longer compatible once it got an OTA update... I haven't put Xposed on my OPO yet as I didn't have much time for making backups/restoring re-flashing the phone in case it gets messed up because I have my kids over spring break for the next week and a half.
The only issues/missing features I'm currently experiencing with 11S are: haven't figured out how to set my system font (or perhaps my old type of font file is no longer compatible?), don't have adds blocked in apps yet, and I want to change the color of my clock in the status bar. I will go ahead and read through threads about putting Xposed on OPO - hopefully it can be added on 11S without causing any glitches?
Oh, and my [stock/unlocked/rooted CM11s] phone is not yet working for LTE - I have Walmart Family Mobile and I recently read that they have begun supported LTE. Sometimes it's just 3G and sometimes it's H+. I will call their support sometime over the next couple days because so far all I did was move the SIM card from my S3 to the OPO and perhaps it's not properly "provisioned(?)" for LTE yet? I say that because I watched one video on Youtube where a guy had to take his OPO to the AT&T store and put his SIM card in another LTE phone, then when he put the SIM back in the OPO, LTE started working on it.

Try Vanir-Exodus, there's a link to it in my signature. It has all those features except setting the system font (which I think you'll have a hard time finding as a stock feature in a ROM anyway), and the battery life is fantastic. Plus, it's mostly original development unlike a lot of the other ROMs out there which just cherry pick commits.

I was all set to try Exodus - but then I read some users mentioning some problems, and I think there was some important feature(s?) I wanted missing, so then I thought - oh, well I'm actually mostly happy with 11s.
The only things missing from 11s for me ATM are 1)haven't found how to change the system font yet,Adaway doesn't seem to block all the in app ads, and it doesn't come with Xposed "baked in".
If Exodus comes with Xposed pre-installed, then wouldn't that let me change the system font?
Basically I want to: set different system font, make the status bar clock green, and not give up Privacy Guard or Profiles - and of course not have to use a ROM with poor stability or poor battery life. My purpose is for the phone to be most enjoyable and useful to use, not to try a different ROM each week and find lots of bugs/glitches/wakelocks/missing features. I went through that with the S3...

Honestly, I haven't had a single issue on Exodus. It doesn't come with Xposed pre-installed, but I'm not sure any ROM actually does. It has Privacy Guard, and it has Profiles. Battery life is excellent and it's as stable as they get.

Blisspop, or basically any ROM with CM themes do let you change the system font (it's part of themes).

like Team Nocturnal's latest ROM. Smooth, no bugs other for me. Never tried to set the font as of yet.

Every 5.1 or higher ROM I've tried had been buggier than EVERY 5.0.2 or 4.4.4 ROM I've tried.
I'm really hoping that some 5.1.x ROM comes out soon without apps crashing, graphics glitches, or wakelock problems.

I've tried several 5.1 ROMs that are completely bug free, you might need to look at your setup.

"Setup"? You're not suggesting that I should try without choosing a more reasonable DPI or give up on using the system font that I always use, or put up with ads or wakelocks, are you? Those are what I see as "basic and essential features".
I do "clean" installs and the only app I restore using Titanium Backup is "A Better Camera Unlocked". I use features such as Profiles, Users, and (hopefully) the ROM's built-in AdBlock (otherwise I use AdAway).
If a ROM requires that a third party patch be used to fix wakelock problems, then I'd consider it an "Alpha" at best?

No I'm not suggesting that at all. I use a custom DPI (370). I use Adaway. I don't use a custom font though. Keep in mind that certain DPI's can and do cause major issues, so you might need to tweak that a little. As far as wakelocks go, no, I wouldn't consider them an Alpha at all. Wakelocks can be found in stock ROMs from the major OEM's, and isn't always caused by the system, quite often they can be caused by third party apps, and apps from within the gapps package.

You Root Your Phone for What?

Many people may be ask what is root? Surely most of you know there is an account called administrator in WINDOWS XP and it gets the highest permission to operate the system. Then, Root is to cell phones what administrator is to computer. Only after you root your phone can you have the permission to customize your phone.
Then can you share your root experience. I am considering whether to root my samsung phone.

Ahh for so many reasons. But to name a few: get rid of bloatware, block ads, listen youtube in the background, record my screen, most importantly customize your phone the way you like it and many many more

For more custom features and to make my phone more smoother. My stock rom was really freezy and laggy. When I rooted my phone and downloaded a new rom, my phone feels a lot more smoother.

Rooting gives privilege , if you are not satisfies with what you have , default apps , any other think which can be modified only if rooted .Although i you wont be having company warranty anymore.

I saw this great reddit comment that summed me up pretty well; for a while I did the whole root thing. Loved it. Tweaking every tiny detail of a phone, getting access to insanely powerful apps, etc.
But it all started souring. Confession: I'm a convert from Linux and Windows to Mac. And that's because Mac's just work for me; when I'm needing to do something vital, I'd much rather something that is 50% less powerful but 100% stable. And I've found with my Galaxy Note 4, although I am annoyed at Touchwiz, at a lot of the stock touches, I much prefer having a non-rooted phone that, if/when an error happens, I know is nothing to do with me.

I root my device to get rid of bloatware, to install custom roms, to customize my device the way I want.

For best battery life.

- Remove bloat/spy/adware
- Titanium backup for easily migrating apps+data (including system apps) to other devices
- Micro-manage permissions of apps for security and efficiency.
- A good proxy/VPN app (if you've been to China you know what I mean).
- Killer youtube replacement app (downloads, plays in background, checks other video services, etc)
- Screen rec. app (pre-lollipop)
- Adaway (blocks adds even in games)
- Tasker
- Possibly to re-partition the eMMC --typically with those cheap 8GB devices that emulate an SD card and only have 1GB or so for apps. But that can be tricky. Would preferably try to flash a custom ROM/Recovery if possible, which is not really related to root.
- Also didn't add nandroid backups to the list because I don't tend to flash custom ROMs much.

I rooted my Samsung as soon as I got it in order to get rid of the unnecessary apps and save the ROM space. Enjoy my customized phone since I don't like the feeling being led by the rose.

I root my devices to use them to their highest potential and of course for Flashing various ROMS and Kernels

Today I had a chance to go over some of the specs on our phone to still try to come up with one of the best settings to really take advantage of the S7's capability and performance.
Nonetheless I would like to begin with the real numbers I scored on AnTuTu: 147212. To confirm that indeed the settings I applied shrunk space and bloat I also attached the AVERAGE score for the SM-G935U Firmware.
The ROOT guides/procedures provided by @araldtm and @Quickvic30 are both great. Thank you developers for your outstanding work.
The only controversy about rooting is that no matter how well developed, configured or tweaked the root is, IT WILL NEVER....SORRY DEVS....BUT NEVER WILL BE AS PERFECT, STABLE, AND SOLID AS THE MERE STOCK FIRMWARE.
So throughout this quick, easy, humble, and simple image guide I will share with you with the settings that have given me a device I can truly rely on with proven and noticeable performance, optimization, and customization while keeping a solid STOCK FIRMWARE.

Alright im interested, root has me lagging too vad. You installed the G935U first ? And then you installed the xml file ? I am a little confused about that part.

Just for grins (I don't believe in benchmarks), I ran Antutu on my completely stock phone with no mods and scored a little over 145,000. An extra 2,000 points is hardly worth doing anything about. I can also get well over 24 hours of battery life with average use at work as long as I have good cell phone signal or airplane mode with wifi on and wifi calling enabled. My opinion is that you all are wasting time with package disablers, debloating, etc. Stock apps are no longer resource hogs, chances are that disabling stock apps is doing more harm than good, especially if other system resources are looking for them. This can result in excess CPU activity and battery drain. Your biggest battery and resource hogs are going to be apps that you physically installed. Especially facebook, and it's ilk. I just gave you my personal experience on one device, so take it for what it's worth. But here you have a whole guide about how to eek out infinitesimally small performance gains whereas I did absolutely nothing and scored virtually the same on a synthetic benchmark.

Redmi 9a flashed with Treble GSI (stock android ROM) - just saying thanks

Hi everyone,
I've been away from the ROM scene for a few years and was pleasantly surprised to find out that even a MediaTek phone these days can be flashed with a ROM different from its original. With a lot of bumps and information from this thread and others, I was able to test the Lineage, Havoc, and Treble ROMs, flashing through adb commands on fastbootd on unsigned xiaomi drivers. The one with the best compatibility so far is an older ROM, the Treble 10 GSI bundled with go gapps. Treble 11, the latest, doesn't have a working "recent apps" button (multitasker/app switcher). I'm not using this phone as a camera phone, but I did install an older Gcam (Gcam 2.3, I think) by googling the phone's mediatek processor, Helio G25.
On stock android, I do feel like the phone is much improved from the MIUI OS's bloat. I feel that Xiaomi as of late is putting too much adware, a far cry from when I bought my first phone from them (A Redmi 1S).
I would like to thank everyone here for the recovery files, twrp, etc.

I'd love to know how you accomplished this, as an otherwise decent phone is, I feel, crippled by MIUI's ridiculous bloat.

Hi @Bludwurst ... I'll see if I can write something semi-coherent about it. Please give me a few days. But the general method was pretty similar to flashing other treble-based ROMs, the important thing is that the phone boots into FASTBOOTD ("elevated" fastboot) and the rom you're flashing is the correct architecture with some Google Go apps (if you want it to be easier to set up). They update every few weeks, so depending on the progress, it may even be feasible to try out the other more popular ROMs. Lineage was 2nd best in my experience, and Android 11 to boot with its own recovery, but it doesn't come bundled with Google Go apps, you'll have to flash the Google apps yourself.
Major caveat about the treble GSI i'm using though -- the Gcam with HDR on has a chance of shutting down (exiting). It's less of an issue when the setting is off. I do have a separate primary camera phone so that wasn't an issue to me.
I've had the phone for about 3 weeks now. I think the biggest difference between this ROM and the MIUI OS is that the MIUI OS is very aggressive about killing my VPN (Ad blocker) and other background apps. With this Treble GSI (Android 10, not 11), I won't claim that my mediatek phone suddenly became a snapdragon, but there's no unexpected app-killing, which is very important for Blokada to stay alive.
**Has any other app crapped out (crashed/exited) since I changed ROMs?**
I don't run games on this phone, so I can't say if there's a difference between MIUI and Treble, but most of the productivity stuff is running okay (time tracker, markdown editor, pdf viewer, etc.) there IS some slowdown when running mobile youtube on my browser (yes, i don't run the youtube app... there may be an improvement if you're using a dedicated app.
I bought this phone as my work tracker phone. Before, with the MIUI stuff, it would stutter after a few apps were loaded. This is improved, but under heavy loads (10+ tabs, video playing), the phone is likely to complain.
**How's the battery life**
I bought this phone for the battery life, so I'd say I'm pretty satisfied on that front. The difference between the MIUI and the Treble GSI.... there's some small improvement with the Treble GSI. But it is (after a few weeks of use) not as much of a "battery boost" as I initially thought. Maybe this is because MIUI keeps killing background apps that now stay on? Can't tell.
**Any other issues**
I had to fix brightness and I think the headphone bug. I still have the commands somewhere, I'll dig it up.
Next, I am not sure if this phone will get security issues moving forward, or if i'll have to keep reflashing to a later GSI. I haven't checked if there's a way to sideload kernel security patches.
**Worth it to switch?**
Yeah, absolutely. Not having to reload apps is a huge deal, and not losing working data while typing helps. Tradeoff is camera hdr and security.

This all sounds very interesting.
I've admittedly not kept up with the Android scene (to call it something), so I'm a bit lost regarding Treble ROMs and such; I'll try to catch up a bit.
Take your time, I can wait.
(It goes without saying that, should I not like the results, I can always bail and reinstall an official Xiaomi ROM for this device, no?)
Yes, MIUI is extremely aggressive killing apps, and getting it to stop is rather confusing (it's not enough to turn off battery optimizations... You need to dig into Settings).
I managed to stop it from killing Netguard, at least...
I also don't play games or otherwise make extremely heavy use of the phone; I also don't care much for camera apps, so such disadvantages aren't dealbreakers for me.

You should use arm32_binder64-ab variants for this device, and you should flash an image that is THE SAME ANDROID VERSION you currently have or 1 version above. Example if you have Android 11, Flash Android 11R version, if you have Android 10 only flash ANDROID 10Q versions, etc.
