It's not called "message tone" it's called "notifications" under the sound settings. However there is no option for you to do what your asking with Stock firmware you'll need to find a custom Rom to have this option. I think Lineage Rom let's you do this.
Has this been removed in android 8 or is this samsug s7? (i don't have this phpne longtime yet, bought it 2nd hand for my car that has android auto) there used to be an option in sound settings that had 4 options like email, sms messages and 2 more, you could change the notification sound over there and in sms app there was also an option in the settings to change the sound of receiving an sms but i can't seem to find it ?
EDIT nevermind found it, its in messages app/settings/notifications/general notifications

I think you've misunderstood the OP, notification for a specific contact like your mother in law or something. Ive only ever seen this in a custom ROM.

That used to be in android by default also.
I charged my old samsung s4, it has kitkat 4.4 stock rooted firmware and in there you can select a different ringtone, sms notification sound and vibrate pattern for every contact.
Edit, i just checked my samsung A5 which has android 7 and the option to change the notification sound for text messages was still there in android 7

Hi,
This is kind of a stupid question, but I've searched and haven't found an answer for it.
I've installed an application to send/receive SMS's, however the original SMS notification still appears when I receive an SMS (I get two notification, one from original app, as well as the replacement app).
is there an option to disable the notification of the original app ?

Go into the original messaging application, settings. Done.
This should have really been posted in the Dream forum, not the developer forum.
or simply opened owners manual....
...or spent 2 mins actually lookin in phone settings...
Stock Inspire
Using stock e-mail program
If I have unread e-mail messages, the phone will beep with the sound notification every time it checks for mail, until I open the e-mail app. Even if I have not received any new mail, it will beep when it checks for mail until I open the program.
So if I receive a message at 1pm, and it it set to check for mail every 10 minutes, I will receive a sound notification at 1:10, 1:20, 1:30, etc. until I actually open the e-mail app.
Is this normal? Is there a setting I can chage where it will only beep once upon receipt of a new message? I looked thru the settings and couldn't find anything.
Thanks.

Anyone else experiencing this?
This is happening for me too on Gmail.
It is also happening with my txt message. In addition to that, when it plays my txt msg notification, at the very same time it plays my default sound (so it is playing two sounds at the same time).
Are there setting for these that I haven't seen yet?
Thanks.

Do you have a third party messaging program like Handcent or Chomp installed?
Sent from my Desire HD using XDA Premium App
How do you turn off specific notifications?
I just received my Inspire today and I'm having similar issues.
I've used Windows Mobile and iPhone for years. This is my first Android phone.
Everything is right out of the box with the stock ROM and no additional apps loaded. The only thing I did was setup my Exchange email accounts.
With Windows Mobile and the iPhone I was able to turn off notifications for new emails, but leave it on for text messages and calendar reminders. I receive a large number of emails and I need to have the email notification sound and vibration turned off.
So far I have found where to set your notification sound and where to turn off all notification sounds. I have not figured out how to turn offf just the email notification sound.
Each program has its own notification settings.
Go to mail -> menu - > more - > settings -> notification settings and there you are.
In gmail - menu -> more -> settings -> scroll down to email notifications
Messages - menu -> settings -> received notification

Thanks for the quick response.
An an Android newbie, I was looking for it in the main settings app, not in the mail program itself. I was able to turn off the email notifications and keep the other notifications on.

That is one of the big difference in iOS and Android. In Android you use the menu button within the app you are using to set the specific settings for that app. In iOS you go to the settings area to change setting for all of the apps. It took me a while to get used to when I made the switch last year. I got used to it and now it just makes sense to change settings within the program, not have to leave the program and do it somewhere else.
Ive been trying to figure out how to set custom ringtones for txts for individual contacts but havent gotten anything. Can anyone help?
Use handcent sms from the Market. Turn off notifications in your stock messaging app once you've installed it to avoid double notifications. In the thread for the person whose notification tone you want to change, tap the button in the top right (the person with a gear) and choose notification settings, then notification sound.
There's no way to do it through the AOSP contacts or sms app.
thank you but thats for android. I forgot to mention I use the touch pro 2. I appreciate the help tho.
Is anybody successfully using chompSMS as their default text app and getting all of texting features on their watch? (I have a Galxy S6 on Verizon in the US).
Following an old thread for this issue on the Gear 1, I was able to get most of the features working. The issue, lies with the fact that the watch wants you to use the default messaging app "Messages" on Samsung phones (which is horrible). I have notifications for the default "Messages" app turned on and silenced on my phone and not showing notifications to prevent duplicates on my phone. I will copy the process from the other thread and link it below.
The best I am currently achieving is that when I receive a text on my phone, I get the chompSMS notification on the watch and can quick reply to it by viewing the text through the notification screen, or when it firsts pops up on the watch face. But if I go to the "Messages" app on the watch to look through a conversation, all I can see are the sent messages from the phone, and not the replies. I am unsure if this is because part of the chompSMS functions are working, or part of the "Messages" app on the phone are working. Either way, Id like to be able to see both the sent and received texts here.
Upon opening the "Messages" app on the watch, I get the message "Unable to receive messages on the Gear. Change the default messaging app to "Messages". I just skip past it to get to the messages.
Has anyone been able to get all of this working with chompSMS? I am unwilling to switch apps on my phone but if you have gotten other apps working, the process could be helpful to me. I would think there would be a way to trick the phone to use two default messaging apps or trick into not requiring one. I haven't rooted my phone but would consider if somebody has gotten it to work that way.

This is what I did...
I uninstalled Go SMS (I'm not sure if this is necessary), and reinstalled.
In the Go SMS :
In the "Notification Settings":
Enable Notifications --> checked.
In the Defualt notification settings:
Vibrate --> checked.
Blink LED -- checked.
In the "Other setting" menu:
Disable other message notification -- Un-checked
In the stock messaging app:
Under "More" tab:
Notifications --> checked
Select ringtone -- > set to "silent"
Vibrate --> Un-checked
Preview message --> checked.
Open the Application manager in the settings of the phone:
Swipe over to the "ALL" tab, and scroll down until you find the "Messages" app. Un-check "show notifications" This will prevent double notifications in the panel.
This should do it. When I received a text, the first time I clicked "show on device", the option popped up on the phone to select the default program between Go SMS and stock messaging. I clicked Go SMS, and set to "Always". Now it opens up Go SMS everytime.
Hope this helps some of you!
Thanks for any help you guys. Much appreciated.
I receive, reply & send with ChompSMS on my watch. I use the messages app on the watch, it *****es that you need different default message app but just click the "X" and send away.

so when you go to the messages app on the watch, you are able to see texts that you send using chomp from your phone? maybe i need to do a reset on my watch..
How do you have the notifications and alerts set up to achieve this?
anyone else have any insight?
I use Handcent and can't get it to work either. The watch always tell me to change the default messaging app. I asked Handcent (through their facebook page) several weeks ago if they were going to update it to support the Gear S2 and they have totally ignored me (and anybody else that posts there). They have a google group now that I submitted a request to join WEEKS ago and its still pending. Because of that, I switched to the default messaging app so it would work on the watch. Apparently handcent isn't interested in helping people that use their app. Perhaps you have better luck with ChompSMS than I have had with Handcent.

Interstingly, I emailed the people at chompSMS the other day and they got back to me very quickly that they have notified the dev team about it (who knows what will come of that).
It seems simple enough. In fact even if the third party apps could be used without being the default messenger, and not show the "make default app" banner when you use them, everything would work great. You'd just follow the instructions i linked above and all the features would work because the stock Messages app would be the default but not be giving you notifications.

I have noticed that it only syncs what I typed to others in the message app, but when i'm texting it show the interaction between who im texting. There is no special config, just make sure Chomp is selected in GM Notifications
I am posting this issue here as there is no Pixel 6a section in forum and I believe 6 and 6po will have same issue.
In my Oneplus 8t I had whatsup with its own notification sound and FB messenger with its default notification sound. I got my Pixel 6a 2 days ago moved all data from Oneplus to Pixel 6a all is good, besides the whatsup and messenger notifications sounds every time I receive message sound is the one that in phone notifications section by default for all apps. I would like to know it is only me or there are other people with same issue. Thanks
I'm not sure if I understand completely. Are you saying that the issue is that your whatsapp and facebook messenger's notification sound uses the default phone notification sound instead of its own notification sound? Or are you talking about in-app notification sounds?
As far as I remember, both apps will use the phone notification sound by default. It's been like that for many generations of android OS. You can change the notification sound under [app info] yourself, but it will default to the phone notification sound if you don't change it. (I use an app called Lightflow that will customize my sounds when I reinstall or transfer to a new phone ... so I'm assuming you don't have installed any apps like that).

Hey you are right, I want whatsup and messenger use their default sounds rather than phones default sound. But for instance I can not find messengers default sound when I try to change it.. usually they have their own sounds under the data folder.

Actually, I think you're right about the app's own default sounds. I looked at my FB messenger and I see under default that it says "app provided sound." (I don't use whatsapp though)
First make sure that FB messenger's (app info) - (notifications) - (chats) is set to [default] and "app provided sound" is displayed under (Sound). You can also try uninstalling and then reinstalling the app. Sometimes when you transfer the app over from another phone, it doesn't fully transfer everything over.

Let me check real quick I have uninstalled reinstalled yesterday but no messages received yet so don't know if sound is default or not ) It seems uninstalling reinstalling fixed the issue now I can see "app provided sound" for FB and for messenger as well as for Whatsup it shows default "note" sound. Thanks for sharing your info
