Phone is making sound while shaking - HTC U12+ Questions & Answers

Hello fellow U12+ owners.
I noticed something annoying while making a phone call today. If I move the phone, I can hear a sound coming from the back of phone. The sound can be also headed while shaking the phone. I haven't noticed the sound before.
I remember back in my M7 days, the camera lens was moving and that made the sound.
Anyone else with this 'problem'?

me too!
seems like it is caused by the ill-design
the vibrator hits the base when its motor is rotating
try to turn down the motor voltage using custome kernel

the motor rotating? the motor is rectangle, it can't rotate inside.
when I shake the phone, it sounds like the cam/OIS is moving there. nothing serious

i tried to shake my phone, but didn't hear the sound you mentioned.

The vibration motor in the u12+ is rectangular, not round as it was in previous and other phones.
It might be that you have a defective device, so that when the vibration motor stops, it will have a click sound because it's not properly fixed.
And well, the sound it hear... I don't know myself if it's really the cam. But the phone works fine, so I don't care if there is such a sound when shaking, because... When do you shake your phone ?
I heard it near the cam, don't know if it's really the cam or something else

[REQUEST] Vibration On/Off switch using the G-Sensor

I don't know, what you think, but:
I think that the nexus One doesn't need a Ringtone if it lies on a table.
The vibration makes so much crappy noises and unfunny sounds, that no one can hear some ringtone ;-)
OK, I'm just kiddin...
But:
I like the vibration much. If I have the Nexus in the jacket or the trousers, I need it, because sometimes I can't hear it ringing.
When I'm in office, my Nexus lies on the table. Now I don't need the vibration. Only ringtone.
Now I've to make the changes: I lie the Nexus on the table and change the vibration to off. Going away, I take my Nexus and change the vibration to on.
What do you guys think? Am I the only one, who think that the vibration mode isn't very impressive on the table?
Is it possible to make a setting to swith the vibration off, if the nexus lies straight on a floor? I think of using the G-Sensor for this.

What if you are sitting down and the phone is in your pocket? Wouldn't the phone be horizontal then? Maybe it would need be refined to only disable the vibrate function when the phone is horizontal AND the screen is facing up. I assume most people probably put the phone in their pockets with the screen facing their leg...
Not a bad idea though. It's similar to other phones that will stop ringing if you put the phone face down.
Don't other HTC devices have this capability? Like some have a vibrate only function, or a silence if you flip it over while it's ringing.
Yeah, ringing is okay, ringing must be on, but the vibration is so scary on a table...

Clicking noise with haptic feedback

Just wondering if anyone us hearing an audible clicking noise coming from the phone when typing with vibrate on keypress switched on. For me it's every five or so key presses there is an audible click noise, as if the vibrating part hits something.it's not too loud, but loud enough to be heard. If you use a keyboard that lets you change the vibration duration, shorter durations such as 10ms or below results in it happening every keypress.
Is anyone else experiencing this?
I had this too on 2 Moto G.
Sent from my HUAWEI Y300-0100 using xda app-developers app
Did you also hear the same noise when going in and out of the camera?
Just wanted to know if it's normal really or if I should be seeking a replacement. Have a feeling it's going to get annoying!
I get them both too, don't think it's anything to worry about.
The camera one is something to do with auto focus as far as I'm aware, and I use Google Keyboard from the Play store with swiping to type so I don't notice the haptic feedback one as much any more.

This is driving me slowly nuts. I type pretty fast using SwiftKey which seems to make it more noticeable. I guess the shorter it vibrates the more it clicks or taps or whatever it's doing to make the annoying noise.
Is there anyone that DOESN'T get this? I'm seriously tempted to return it at this point in the hope of getting one that doesn't make a tapping clicking noise when it vibrates on touch. So it would be good to know if there are people out there who haven't experienced this.
I have two Moto G's at the moment.
The first one has a permanently stuck on blue pixel in the middle of the screen.
So I bought another (to transfer across and then refund the first). The second unit has this click with haptics.
The tone of the vibrate / haptic is noticeably different between the two phones too (the clicking unit sounds much buzzier).
So thumbs up for Moto Quality Control...
I took the phone which makes this noise with the haptics on apart, and can confirm that the noise is not from the buttons on the side rattling or any other part in the back of the phone. It sounds to me like it is making some component of the earpiece or the front camera rattle.
For anyone interested, here is a photo of the inside of the back cover that I took:

So we have one person confirming that at least one device does not have the rattling vibration. Mine definitely has this and it's sounding from those I've asked that it is more common than not. Well this sucks. I guess I can go without haptic at all. Because it's darn annoying. Sounds like a cheap toy. I'm still slightly tempted to return mine and see if the next one they send does not have the rattle.

From those I've talked with, that's actually the more common experience. If you don't have the rattle, you lucked out.

I think you are correct - at least for units currently on sale via Tesco in the UK. My update - 3 of the 4 I've had through my hands have had the rattle. 2 have had stuck pixels (one which disappeared of it's own accord). So:
Phone 1: Quiet vibrate + 1 perma-stuck pixel + case corner creaking
Phone 2: Clicky vibrate
Phone 3: Clicky vibrate + stuck pixel (fixed itself)
Phone 4: Clicky vibrate
Did you buy through Tesco? I wonder if they got em cheap... they are certainly selling them cheaper than everywhere else.
I am beginning to think this is a characteristic - but it does detract a bit from the experience (especially with haptics turned on at the factory).
You could reduce the haptic duration for the AOSP keyboard which improves things while texting (try 10-13ms), and disable system haptics for other stuff.
Guys, did we get a conclusion if this is normal on this device? Mine does this as well.
Thanks

I think it is pretty normal. It's just cheap. Although it just might be a failure to properly attach the vibrating mechanism to whatever it attaches too. I have talked to some people with even the Moto x and they said that all of a sudden one day, theirs started making this sound. As if it detached. I have also seen a Nexus 4 with the issue.
In all likelihood, if you got a different Moto G, it will have the same issue. But it's really not bad at all if you turn haptic feedback off in general and for the your keyboard input.

[Q] Weak vibrate?

Hi
I find the Z3 viration motor to be very weak. I changed from HTC One M8 which was audible across the room when vibrating. I find the Z3 very weak (often don't notice it when in my pocket) and when on the table makes a fairly feeble noise. Is the the case with all of them?
Not sure if this will help but goto
Settings/language and input
Select the settigns of the xperia keyboard and scroll down to Sound and vibration.
In there, there is a setting for vibration intensity.
Hope it helps

Sadly it doesn't help because it just affects the vibration when you type; presumably the OP (like myself) wants "louder" vibrations for phone calls/notifications.
Try maybe turning off vibrate mode and it will make an audible noise called a "ringtone"
Yes the vibrate is a joke on this phone. And try turning on the Ringtone as the helpful soul above suggested, it's equally as pathetic lol
Its not so bad lol, definitely not as powerful as my LG G2 though.

I only referred to the loudness as an idea of how weak the motor is physically in comparison. Just wanted to know if it was usual! Is not the end of the world the M8 was relatively strong compared to most.
yeah I dont notice the vibrate either, coming from a Samsung S3

Sorry I'm a [email protected]$$, compared to my Galaxy Nexus it was maybe stronger. The vibration was strong enough to move my phone from being safely on the counter to falling off and breaking it so I would say it's strong enough? Can't compare to the M8 from personal experience.

Is my Mate 7 listening to me?!

Ive just noticed something strange with my phone. I had it placed flat on my desk and was looking at something with my face close to the screen and I can hear a very faint buzzing, like whwn a radio is on but the volume is turned down to zero. It seems to come on and off randomly....
The sound only happens when the phone is on a flat surface and you have to really listen out for it in a silent room.
Any idea what this is? I do have bluetooth and wifi turned on...
Happened to me last night as well.
Any help would be appreciated.
Cheers.
Glad im not the only one! It almost sound like the mic is being turned on and is recording! Spooky!!
hacked ?
i couldn't send sms few days back .. had to do restore
it is made by the chinese...

When you'll hear it next time turn off DTS, touch sounds and lock sounds in sound settings and wait a few seconds.
Buzzing appears a few seconds after some sound came out of the speakers.
Anyone knows who should we contact and where to suggest a fix in the next update?

The Google now function always listens? One processor core Is always dedicated to Google now. You can disable this function. If it is not Google now I am very interested to know too. I am very against Google now do function, I do not like when the phone always listen to what you say. And the voice recognition is so good know days that they can turn it to searchable text in the other end...
Some one did mention it is Chinese. I would be more worried if it was American.

Hardware issue? Strange noise from vibration motor.

Does anyone else have an issue with the vibration motor making a weird noise? Almost like it's not stuck in the phone properly. When I squeeze the phone it stops, as soon as I let go the sound returns.

Sounds like you have a problem,my vibrate is quite loud but not as electronic sounding as yours.Mine is more deep bassey almost
If it also makes that sound when flat on a table or in your hand instead of on the case, then something is wrong indeed.

Yes, it does it whenever the phone vibrates. Makes no difference if it's in the case, out, flat on the table etc. Only stops when I pinch the phone.
I'll start a chat with Oneplus for a repair order
Oh **** that's not good. Mine sounds tinny but solid. Not as nice as phones like the LG V30, but acceptable. Definitely that sounds bad. Take it back for warranty replacement IMO
I had the same problem and had to reduce the intensity of vibration via settings. Working is acceptable since then.
Only that it scared me when it suddenly started up.

Sounds like you have a unique vibrator that no other phone has. Embrace it or... You should probably replace, because that's an actual moving part, and if not to spec, it could lead to a catastrophic failure, whatever that means.

That's one way to look at it. You're a glass half full kinda guy
I've send it back to OnePlus for repair monday, should have it back tomorrow. Happy for the quick repair by OnePlus.
I have the same exact problem. The strong vibration setting causing it but when I put it on medium its fine.
*Man, it would take like 2 weeks to get my phone back, I don't know if I should sent it for repair or not. :/
I have the same problem. Contacted OnePlus via live chat and was told this is normal and it happens on her OnePlus phone on strong vibration setting.
I decided to check on YouTube to see where the vibration motor is located. Put the phone down on a flat hard surface, applied a little pressure on the bottom half of the phone by holding phone by the sides. This seems to have 'fixed' it for me for now.
Looks like it is not 'normal' behaviour as the lady in customer services suggested. Probably just a slight quality control issue.
edit: seems it was temporary 'fix'. Rattling is back.
My launch-week OP6 just developed this issue. Leads me to believe it might be something like an adhesive working loose over time. Thank you for this thread. I've put my call vibration on medium (was high) which seems to alleviate it.
I have sent my OP6 for repair. Dropped it off at the local UPS service location, it is going from the UK to Poland. Lets see how long the turnaround will be and what, if anything, they do to fix this.
Checked the RMA tracking today and apparently the fault has been fixed. Spoke to someone on OnePlus live chat who said the vibration motor was faulty and has now been replaced.
Took a total of 4 days to receive the phone back. Vibration motor replaced and no longer rattles when set to 'Strong'. Now just restoring apps and data on the phone.

OnePlus provided a return label to send from UK to Poland. I packed the phone in the original box for protection. Not necessary to send back in original box but has to be packed securely.
I have the same problem with the strange vibration sound.... But it only happens sometimes.
The noise comes from the metal power button and volume button. Nothing to be worried about. Its annoying but you can fix it by using full back cover.
