Is it possible to enable YouTube HDR on our phones? - Xperia Z5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi everyone,
I believe our Z5 screens are fantastic (for LCD displays), and they would be even better if we could watch YouTube videos with HDR enabled. Our phones are not on the YouTube signature devices list, but Sony phones from the XZ2 onwards are.
My question is, is it possible to manually force YouTube to enable HDR like how OnePlus users have done (see link below)?

8MP still capture from 4K video?

Hi,
I saw in Z5 Premium page that there is a new feature which allows you to take still images from 4K videos. As its just software, any possibility that every Z phone will get that feature or we need someone to extract his apk? Can be seen in official phone page in freeze the action part, can't post links.
I think our z3 can do it right out of the box? If you mean taking photos while recording 4K.
I meant there is new feature allowing you to take 8MP photo from previously recorded 4K video.

My Youtube no longer have the 4k Option after Oreo update. is this normal ?

Hi.
so after the update, I no longer have the 4k viewing option. only full HD. is this normal ?
How do I get it back ?
Thanks
4k is still there. It is removed, however, for 4k HDR content due to an issue with the app.
For normal non HDR videos 4K is still there. But videos with HDR is now limited to 1080p due to performance issues with pretty much every device: http://www.androidpolice.com/2017/11/04/hdr-youtube-app-now-maxes-1080p/
Shame they don't offer an option to just watch the non-HDR version instead.

does video capturing support HDR??

I was just browsing through GSM arena and found the XZP so I decided to give it a glance and I saw under video it states that there is HDR support.
I cant seem to find how to enable that option in my camera video settings I dont know what does GSM arena mean by HDR under video features...
does any one care to share a possible explanation?
thanks

that info is totally wrong, you can only enable HDR in photo mode
The video recording is HDR, but not 10bit HDR as the XZ2
There is 2 types of HDR:
The "old" HDR, wich was made to record video in backlight conditions, being able to record with diferent exposition values avoiding white sky and dark subjects, the same as you know as HDR in photos, so the video is recorded in traditional 8bit colour range but with backlight correction
The "new" HDR, wich in addition to the old HDR also brings the 10bit recording, wich is able to improve colour and the brightness values without "burning" the image (when you take a picture and the sky looks white because it was too bright)
The old HDR was introduced by the Xperia Z, years ago, since then most smartphones record HDR video (actually HDR video was introduced before HDR photos in smartphones due for HDR photos you need multiple photos, and video is multiple images so it can make HDR easier)
You can check the HDR video was introduced with Xperia Z here:
So all Xperias since then record HDR video, when you see the Backlight icon when recording you know the phone is recording in backlight situation and uses HDR to improve the image, but its not the HDR10 or 10bit of the Xperia XZ2
If you want to know if the Xperia XZ premium could record in 10bit the answer is probably since the XZ2 uses de same camera sensor, but since is the XZ2 reason to exist, I dont think Sony will bring to XZ Premium, but who knows, actually they bring the 3D mode from XZ1 so...
On my Xperia Z2 I am able to capture video recordings at 4K HDR. Something that the XZ2 can do but not our beloved XZ Premium. They have ideas to make the mod for our device and detail the real capabilities of the camera. Just not sure when that will happen but it sounds like a possibility. Because of this mod I feel at times my Z2 takes better photos and videos than my XZ Premium.

When recording in 1080/30 with automatic mode sometimes it shows a "backlight" icon or "Backlight portrait", then is using HDR to correct the backlight over the subject

hdr on android 9 working ?

i tried hdr on or off while in manual settings on the new photo app of android 9 but i see no difference, did i miss something or is it just disabled by sony on xz premium to force us to buy a new phone if we want hdr photo ? is there a hdr in video mode ? i also see no difference bewteen a 4k video on android8 and and android 9 (but there is no hdr toggle for video in android 9 so it does not seem available on xz premium ( by hdr video i mean raising the shadows and providing details in the highlights such as the sky and not the other hdr type that requires a hdr monitor)

oh i understand now, HDR for videos is not available on XZP its not a software thing, our device simply doesnt support HDR video recording.
as for photos, I dont notice a difference mostly, but I think auto includes auto HDR because also on oreo i didnt notice a difference unless its in outdoors with a lot of trees and colorful environment there could be a slight difference noticed

the snapdragon 835 can do hdr video capture( https://www.qualcomm.com/products/snapdragon-835-mobile-platform ) and the camera sensor is the same on xzp and xzp2 so it is just sony disabling features in older phones to force you to buy their latest phone. UPDATE : it seems the image pipeline was redone for xz2 premium so we are out of luck with our "old" xz premium if we want hdr video.
The XZ Premium can't record HDR Videos (4K)
But we got SDR TO HDR Conversion. It's the "new" video image enchantment. Sony support confirmed it on Twitter DMs. As the name says, it works on video and it can work on a few apps that they don't mention which.

I have tried it and so can you, I can confirm, here is how I tested:
watched the video on youtube
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1XTvrXLfheI&t=49s
was very very crisp and detailed but the video isnt HDR, so I gave it a shot and downloaded the video with 4k youtube downloader app on my PC and placed the video on my device, then watched it there, total different story mate!! I am so happy! I started flipping between recent's app going to youtube and back to the video app (or photo they both support it) while I was watching the same video on both, and I was shocked to see that its ALOT more colorful and dynamic in the video app than on youtube (set on 4k on youtube).
I was skeptical about it but now that I tried, I can confirm with full confidence that we have SDR to HDR!
try it your self and let me know if you notice it too

you are talking about hdr video playback, i am speaking about hdr video capture (but again not in a hdr video codec, just raising details in the shadows and the highlights by combining multiple exposures in a non hdr video codec, exactly what is done in hdr photo and like what you see here : https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HgyR00UiWJE )
XZ Premium uses BionzX for camera , and it does not support HDR recording. On XZ2 and on camera uses Qualcomm ISP for camera processing.

4K HDR Video Without Root! Exynos only

This mod is possibly only for the S7 Exynos. I don't have access to a Snapdragon S7, but the camera profile I worked form states that it only works on the Exynos version...
Hey hey S7 Users! Ever since getting my hands on an S7 Edge last year I’ve drooled over the Zero Camera Mod 4K HDR capability. I used to root my handsets the second I received them, but honestly, these days I can’t be bothered.
Anywho, long story short, I was recently hunting for S7 Mods and stumbled upon the Snap Camera 4K 60fps mod. It works brilliantly, btw! While messing around with the profile settings within Snap Camera I found I was able to enable HDR video recording at 4K 30fps!!!
I’ve included a link to a quick comparison video I made comparing 4K video shot using the stock Samsung camera app and 4K HDR video shot using the “Snap Camera HDR” app from the PlayStore with a custom profile.
I’ve also included links to the original video I found explaining the Snap Camera 4K 60fps mod, and a link to my custom profile, which is based on the 60fps mod profile.
To load the profile just download the “snap_settings.bin” and place it in the root of your storage. Load up Snap Camera and head to the “Other” menu in settings. Select “Load Settings” and enjoy 4K HDR!

Can you upload the file again? The link has expired again, or at least send it to me some how, i couldn't get the file anywhere.
any chance you could re upload the settings file? the link is dead.
