Updated TWRP and Magisk, now DRMFIX doesn't work - Sony Xperia XZ Premium Questions & Answers

I'm still on 47.1.A.5.51 and was having some issues with my phone frequently restarting itself and I tried updating Magisk from 14.3 to 18.0 and TWRP from 3.1.1.0 to 3.2.X.X (can't remember offhand). It seems to have stopped the rebooting issue but now DRM fix doesn't seem to work anymore. I am using the kernel and fix provided by shoey63.
I did consider updating to Pie but it seems that there's still a bunch of bugs and stuff. Also couldn't find a proper step by step guide of what the flash order is for it to not lose userdata.
Help would be much appreciated. I just need to hold on to this device for another couple of months before XZ4.
EDIT: It's Magisk that is causing the problem, updating it makes the rebooting issue disappear. Can't update because the free version of DRM fix isn't updated for the newer versions of Magisk.
EDIT2: To heck with it, I installed the DRM and kernel from Janjan's thread even though my firmware is an older version and everything seems to work. It's on Magisk 17.1 and not the latest 18.0 but as long as it doesn't reboot it's mission accomplished for now. Bonus points because now it passes SafetyNet too.

Bootloader won't relock, and SafetyNet mayhem

Hi there
Two issues/problems here:
I rebranded my Oreo European MHA-L09 successfully to MHA-L29, everything went perfectly. Then I proceeded to flash RR. SafetyNet however is not helping : CTS mismatch doesn't seem to wanna go away. I tried everything I could find, Magisk does nothing, unrooting : same, can't relock bootloader (root is risk)... kindabummed as it even blocks Spotify from showing up in Play Store. After a week of proding, I'v given up.
So I go back to stock, and whaddayaknow, everything goes fine except... bootloader won't relock : root is risk. I tried reflashing using HWOTA, like, a billion times, couldn't get HiSuite to help either, can't really figure out how to use download mode - most tutorials I found were for P10 - sooooo... yeah.
Any ideas when it come to relocking bootloader (in a stock rom or nah) and passing SafetyNet when a GSI is flashed?

So, bootloader relock won't happen if any of the stock images don't match exactly to what the system expects. (If it does, you brick.)
On any ROM, provided it passes the basicIntegrity check, Magisk, possibly with the universal props fix module, will get SN passing. (If it doesn't pass basicIntegrity in the first place, that's another thing, and Magisk can't fix that.)

Thank you so much for your answer! I already tried installing huawei props fix but it doesn't want to flash - /data/magisk is not configure proprerly even after multiple reinstalls apparently - and when it comes to MagiskHide Props Config, I can't seem to find a fingerprint for the Mate 9. Would using the Mate 10's cause issues?

Near as I've been able to tell, the fingerprint only makes a difference to things like SafetyNet. You can add the fingerprint for the Mate 9 if you want, obviously, but you could just as easily use one swiped from anywhere else and it would work just the same.
How are you attempting to install Magisk? I've only ever done it, personally, through Magisk Manager, using "Patch boot image" or "Direct install". With the bugs that recently appeared (Magisk Manager 5.8, Magisk 16.6, saw lots of softbricks due to direct install or install via TWRP - it was unconditionally patching something it shouldn't have), I've been telling people to use Patch Boot Image in Magisk Manager always.

Okay, thanks! Yeah, I installed it from TWRP. Gonna redo the install then.
Also, I just noticed that Bluetooth does not work - it doesn't even activate for some reason - so I'll probably restart from ,yet another, clean flash. Thank you so much for your help!

Root OpenKirin Resurrection Remix 6.2.0

So I am running beta 3 of Ressurection Remix from OpenKirin website. Everything is smooth even after heavy tweaks. But I want to root this ROM. Reason is I want to uninstall built-in apps and some of my apps require root access. I already tried rooting the ramdisk.img. it failed. Even though it was rooted root access wasn't available. So can I directly flash latest magisk via elemental ROM TWRP? Or is there any other method?
Like you, I'm on the same build from yesterday, and obviously the minimum that I'd like to do is to root the ROM, since that we already miss a fully working TWRP and a compatible Xposed framework.
I discovered just yesterday topjohnwu's thread about patching the stock boot.img with the custom Magisk Manager apk for Huawei devices, but before doing everything I've decided to make a search on XDA, and I've stumbled upon this. So neither patching the stock ramdisk.img works?? Dammit. Becsuse standing by what i know, flashing latest Magisk on an A only GSI works, but i haven't read successful cases rooting an OpenKirin ROM yet.
I'd like to test this method, but i still have to setup some stuff on this ROM, and so i don't want to try something that could mess up system, trashing all the time that I've spent on configuring the device.
I'll update ya as soon as i can, if something useful should come out. I hope to update you soon!
Dude. I have done it and would like to tell you that it can be flashed normally. Currently enjoying root with all modules working. If you have an honor 6x just flash TWRP from elemental room thread and then latest magisk. So far no issues, no bootloop. However after first installation I recommend you to install via direct patch once again to ensure everything works. i.eif you still wanna know. This is way simpler
Thanks for letting me know mate, yeah i have a 6X. Actually I've installed TWRP and flashed latest stable Magisk, V17.1. Magisk is correctly detected by Magisk Manager.
Now, the file that i should provide to patch on Magisk Manager is stock EMUI 8.0 boot.img, correct?
Nope. If you have magisk installed just direct install once again via magisk manager and you're good to go
Thanks Mannan, I'm enjoying root goodies too now.
I take the chance to ask ya if sound mods like Viper/Dolby Atmos will also work or not as a Magisk module, since that time ago (but even recently) i saw some users that was saying in a couple of threads that flashing one of these would corrupt system files, and so EMUI 8 had to be flashed again.
First of all we aren't on EMUI 8bso no corruption. We are on Android 8.1 so any Sound Mod for this Firmware should work. Now I haven't flashed it yet cause mainly I have to find a working one and of the risk of soft brick. But I will try and let you know if I find a working one. Same goes for exposed framework
Got it. Well it would be great, especially Xposed in systemless version.
EDIT - going off topic a while, even you notice a charging time much slower than on stock? Before, i usually charged something like 60-65% in one hour, now it tooks at least 1 hour and an half to achieve the same percentage of battery. Gotta tweak this someway.
Tried installing Viper4android. Gives IO error while mounting driver. Xposed I havent tried

Thanks for the feedback. Sadly i think that Xposed won't work too.

Rooting Pie?

I have a question. I want to root my phone (upgraded from oreo to pie, stock), but i'm not sure what should i do. Should i use oreo rooting instructions? I can't find any tutorial for rooting on pie. I don't want to change my rom, i just want to have a root and be able do use the magick and modules that's all. It would be nice to have step by step instruction.
I know i have to unlock my bootloader first at htcdev, then install twrp (not sure which twrp and if the installation is same as on oreo?)
In the past i rooted one phone but it was completely different and i almost bricked my device, because some idiot posted wrong link on the forum... There is so many versions of everything and i'm feeling lost in it.
I hope this helps, but Pie is still very new for the HTC U11. Some even are saying that clean flashes of the Pie RUU have flash, camera, and wifi issues. I am currently running the amazing RR-P rom (which is based on pie), but it runs on the latest Oreo RUU. I have no issues with the ROM and I get insane SoT even without battery savings. I am excited for the future of this phone, since I love the hardware navbar (never liked the on-screen one / though my HTC m8 is still a boss, and even the forums there have a very solid Lineage 17.0 (android 10) working on it).
https://dl.twrp.me/ocn/
Above is the official link to the US HTC u11 TWRP recoveries. I don't think (to be safer than sorry) these are 100% compatible over the PIE firmware though.
I checked HTCdev, and it doesn't seem to have any difference in the instructions in unlocking the bootloader. No mention of Nougat or Oreo, so I would assume there's no difference in doing the same with Pie.
I flashed my U11 after Pie update, working fine, no problems with flash, wifi or anything else (CID: HTC__034)
1. Unlock bootloader via htcdev
2. Flash latest TWRP from the official site. Instructions here for example: https://www.xda-developers.com/how-to-install-twrp/
3. Flash Magisk (also from official Magisk site)… that was a little trickier, since TWRP can't mount the encrypted partitions. The workaround is to copy the Magisk ZIP onto an SD Card and flash it from there while in TWRP.
4. Enjoy.
I decided to root this U11 for the first time, since I don't expect any futur software updates coming form HTC.
Thank you for all your help, i'll try this out today. :good:
So i did everything and it's working but i have one problem. After installing magisk i tried to install some modules, and one of them caused bootloop and i was unable to delete it, and also i was unable to install module uninstaller (fail). So i had to do factory reset - any solution to avoid this kind of problems in future?
Also i installed xposed successfully, but none of modules was working..

I have no answers, but as u can see a rooted pie is problematic, hence the many people reverting back to oreo and or nougat, but some people somehow make it work. Not me I could not downgrade quick enough after rooting, unrooted pie worked great, but my many 'need for root apps' did not , so back to oreo for me . Just my 2 cents!! Good luck.

I found many working apps. The biggest problem is "substratum", especially when it comes to changing navbar buttons. But gravitybox is working, and I'm happy with it. Thanks for your help
My rooted Pie works fine, but I didn't install Substratum or Xposed.

HD8 '18 OS 6.3.1.5 (& HD10 '17) Xposed crashloop with WiFi:

HD8 2018 6.3.1.5 (and 6.3.1.4) issues
HD8 2018 OS continues to present never ending issues (seems like a poorly supported product compared to the earlier Fires ...)
I flashed 6.3.1.5 (6.3.1.4) on top of 6.3.1.2 via TWRP (+Magisk/systemless Xposed), and, ended up with a weird WiFi crashloop that took a few tries to understand. Essentially, the moment it connects to a WiFi network, it reboots. If I set WiFi to off, it's stable (have to do it quick before it connects after a reboot!). If I disable Xposed module, it's stable. Neither Xposed 89.3 or 90beta work correctly.
On 6.3.1.2 Xposed worked more or less OK.
I tried to downgrade back to OS 6.3.1.2 or 6.3.0.1, but apparently the settings are not compatible once you load 6.3.1.4 on it. It never reaches the launcher, and keeps sitting at Fire screen. I could not even boot 6.3.1.2 or 6.3.0.1 without Magisk. Doing a factory reset was not in my plan yet. So I had to go to 6.3.1.4 again where it booted fine. I now run 6.3.1.4 with Xposed disabled.
Anybody has 6.3.1.4 with Xposed & WiFi working properly out there? I wonder if this is also a similar issue with Fire 7 2019 (mustang) - @Michajin
HD10 2017 40.6.5.0_user_650601220 issues
Well, what do you know ... I finally took the plunge to do the unlock and install TWRP on my Kingoroot rooted HD10 2017 (thanks @k4y0z !). I backed up all the apps via Titanium Backup, and then backed up the internal sdcard via Total Commander to a zip, which later nicely restores things back with the proper timestamps (yay!). It's very difficult to restore timestamps, but Total Commander with root can do it.
In my optimism, after getting TWRP, I immediately installed the latest FireOS, 40.6.5.0_user_650601220, with Magisk, and Xposed installed into system (xposed-v89-sdk22-arm64.zip). And, just like HD8 2018, the moment I activated Xposed modules, the tablet started rebooting when WiFi was on. If I managed to hit WiFi off button before it did so, it seemed stable. So both HD10 2017 and HD8 2018 appear to have the same Xposed bug in the latest FireOS versions!!! I wonder if it's related to the fix of MTK-SU issue.
I also ran into Google Play & battery drain issues. Tired of several attempts of troubleshooting, I actually ended up backtracking all the way to 40.6.2.6_user_626533320, which is the version I started with. Once Google Play went south after my 1st restore, I could not fix it over multiple tries, and I had to do a Factory reset again and restore apps via Titanium Backup a bit more carefully, starting with the latest versions of Google Play apps without data (rather than just all at once). Now everything appears to be working as before, with TWRP, and the same old FireOS version that I already had
The battery drain issue was an interesting one, apparently, Vanced Youtube helper app, microg_YouTube_Vanced_0.2.6.17455, creates a lot of battery drain via needless Wakelocks, which can be fixed by running the following commands:
Code:
adb shell
su
pm disable com.mgoogle.android.gms/org.microg.gms.people.ContactSyncService
P.S. A week ago I unlocked HD8 2017 (OS version 50.6.3.6_user_636558520), and successfully cloned HD8 2016 to this 2017 via TiBa & Total Commander. That attempt went without a glitch, and that's why I thought I could also do HD10 in no time, but HD10 gave me all kinds of issues.

You have a point here regarding LoS I thought I was gaining stability by sticking to FireOS, but this version has been anything but stable!
I need Skype to work - is the camera working in either LoS 14.1 or 16? The issue is that some of these ROMs seem to be in eternal beta, once the low hanging fruit is done, the polish is not applied further.

The camera works on both 16.0 and 14.1. But 14.1 is by far more stable at this time. Bluetooth and headphones (plus more- see thread) issues on 16.0. The only issue on 14.1 is the headphone jack doesn't work (but i think someone has found a fix for it but it hasnt been updated in the rom). Backup in TWRP and install 14.1 and give it a shot, i am on 16.0. 14.1 was working really smooth. I have not tested skype on either. 14.1 seemed smoother and less buggy than fireOS right at Beta.

Observation regarding custom ROMs is one reason I typically hang with 'stock' and tune to my liking. LOS 14.1 for this device/gen (and a few others) is an exception; worth considering. LOS 16.1 is less refined ATM with no meaningful advantage over 14.1.

I needed to have headphones working, so I didn't try LOS 14 until recently. I'm extremely happy with it. It's so much snappier than stock for me, and videos load so much faster, like in Netflix, for example. I'm also using Magisk and Xposed with no issues.
I didn't realize the new build is up with fixes... Going back to 14.1, I think he is working on 17.0 (Kaijones23) 17.0 was updated last night....

Have you unlocked the bootloader (prerequisite):
https://forum.xda-developers.com/hd...nlock-fire-hd-8-2018-karnak-amonet-3-t3963496
I have unlocked the bootloader, for which I had to open the tablet up in order to short a pin. I was able to load the FireOS 6.0.0.0 and 6.0.0.1, and was looking if there is a way to load 6.0.1.2 or 6.0.1.4, when I came upon this thread, and saw that it may be possible to load lineage or cm, but I don't know how to get my hands on the ROMs. The downloads from the links above are way too small.

Supposedly renaming .bin to .zip allows flashing from twrp. I'd be wary of other partitions such as recovery and aboot which could trigger a bad day.
Headphone fix for LOS 14 has been applied in the latest version of the ROM. If you don't feel like reflashing entire ROM, there is a flashable zip containing only the headphone fix (module). I don't have the links handy but it's all available on this forum.

[Solved] WiFi not working after updating to LOS 18.1 and rooting it

Preamble / RamblingHello dear xda-community,
I am a little desperate right now. After hours of searching for solutions I am sadly out of luck and afraid I might destroy the system if I try to solve this issue any further by my own. :/
By no means I am an expert in flashing / rooting mobile devices, so please forgive me if I did something stupid.
But with that out of the way I hope you can help me. Thank you already for your efforts.
Have a great day,
TheAverageUser
The ProblemWhen trying to connect to a WiFi the connection disrupts and apparently the entire network management component (?) crashes and restarts.
I suspect it of crashing because the connection to the internet via my SIM card is disconnected as well for a short period of time after the WiFi tries to connect to a base station.
How I got here
Upgraded from LOS 17.1 to 18.1 like so
Installed TWRP as described here
Installed Magisk as described in the "Custom Recovery" section of this guide
Additional Information
After upgrading to LOS 18.1 I noticed that Magisk did not work anymore, so I tried to find a way to re-root my device.
A long search later I decided that I needed TWRP in order to root the device as many guides I found required this to be the case. Sadly I can't remember how I rooted the device the first time.
The mentioned method for installing Magisk seemed to be the only one working for me. (I did not find anything better.)
I would love to fix my current OS without having to start over, because setting it up again is very tedious.
Previous Setup (Before Upgrade)
OnePlus 6 (obviously ^^)
Lineage OS 17.1
Magisk
Lineage Recovery
Updates:
#1 Okay. Now I am even more confused. The phone just connected to my WiFi and it seems to work. I didn't do anything as of yet. I am going to investigate further to find out when exactly the connections fail. Honestly I don't like a 50:50 chance of it working ^^ (Just to be clear. My problem is not fixed as of yet.)
#2 For some reason the WiFi is now working. The only thing that I can think of which might have solve the issue is that I have uninstalled and reinstalled the "F-Droid Privilgeded Extension" for Magisk.

Is it not because of your base OOS version?
Just do this and you are 100% okay.
1. Use MSM Tool here (it is like a full factory reset with a clean install - you have to unlock your bootloader again!!!)
2. Download latest OOS Full Update here, latest TWRP here, NikGapps here (Magisk if you like) and copy them into Device
3. Flash OOS, TWRP & Reboot to Recovery
4. Flash OOS, TWRP & Reboot to Recovery
5. Flash LOS-ROM, TWRP & Reboot to Recovery
6. Flash NikGapps (and Magisk) & get back to Menu
7. Select Wipe and just swipe to wipe data
8. Reboot to system
9. Done
Hello @tiga016 and @Pundy,
so here is an update on my situation:
For some reason the WiFi is now working. The only thing that I can think of which might have solve the issue is that I have uninstalled and reinstalled the "F-Droid Privilgeded Extension" for Magisk.
@Pundy
Thank you very much for this guide. For now I will continue to use my device in its current state, but as soon as I try to do a major update I will come back to your guide in order to install everything in a clean manner.
@tiga016
Thank you for your interest in my issue. For now I will consider this problem to be solved.

Hello Pundy,
I have updated from LOS 17.1 to 18.1 (clean install) sadly wifi was not working with 17.1 and also not with 18.1. Therefore I have installed OOS (without TWRP) one of the latest version and made an update via wifi to the current version. So wifi is ok. Following the LOS howto, I was successful in installing the latest LOS BUT again wifi is not working...
Sadly also using the MSM Tool is not working. The MSM Tool does not connect with the OP6 (Sahara problem). I have tried it many times...
Any alternative?
BR Martin
