Samsung Default Call App not Working, Factory Reset Fix Attempted with no Results - Samsung Galaxy S7 Questions and Answers

Ok so ever since my phone was updated back in October 2018 the default phone app (A.K.A. Samsung Call) on my Samsung Galaxy S7 has been gimped...
Symptoms:
- Whenever I receive incoming call the app launches and receives the call normally.
- Cannot make any calls, the actual app with the "Phone" icon can be clicked on but doesn't launch, which includes the dialer.
- I cannot launch calls by using the Contacts App.
- I can actually successfully launch an outgoing call by going through my text Message app(which is still the default Samsung app) and by selecting a person's number through a message they sent I am able to use the drop down menu to launch a call.
Fix Attempts:
- Attempted uninstalling & reinstalling only the Samsung Call app
- Attempted to clear the cache and data for the Samsung Call app (for all 3 of them because 3 of them show up in my app list whenever Show System Apps option is checked)
- Attempted Factory Reset of the phone, both through the Settings/General Management/Reset menu and through the Android Bootloader/Bios
- Attempted accessing the Call app inside of safe mode, no dice.
I'm at a loss as to what to try next, besides nuking the OS on the device and reinstalling it from ground zero. (Also as side note is this a well-known issue? Because I can't find any mention of it anywhere yet when I go to the Galaxy App store and look up the review of the app it seems I'm not the only affected user following that Oct 30. Update)

Only other thing I can think of on top of what you've done is uninstall the app, then try an apk from apkmirror or another mirror site.
If it's say a problem with system corruption an Odin flash might rewrite what's broken. If you flash with Home_CSC,AP,CP,BL it keeps your data. If you use normal CSC it wipes.

com.android.phone crashes when receiving call

This is just to document what I went through a few days ago...
I received my OPO last Monday
I started to setting it up last Tuesday
Everything "apparently" was fine
I can dial out
I can SMS out
I can go out to network and download (wifi and 4g LTE on TMobile)
BUT I didn't test/check any inbound, such as receiving call or SMS (looking back, I shoulda try them)
Then my wife told me I didn't pickup my phone last Thursday (ALWAYS pickup your wife's phone call )
I started to look into it,and found out
com.android.phone will crash whenever there's incoming call
incoming SMS is not even showing up in my SMS app, and my wife's SMS app (iphone 5 on ATT) did not show failed delivery. She has no problem seeing my SMS
I was on
CM11S (XNPH25R)
franco r10 kernel
philz recovery
rooted
xposed framework (no module loaded though)
I called TMo support, and got transferred to tech support
They guy I talked to was very nice, and did everything he could to help me out
Since it's not their phone, there's not a whole lot they can do
At the end, both him and I agreed to try and do a factory reset and see what happen
Son of a gun, it work just fine!
Less invasive Solution
Symptoms:
start the phonebook, try to make a call, will crash after a short while.
Somtimes right during trying to answer a call.
Failing processes:
com.android.phone
android.proces.acore
Situation:
Sony Xperia Z1
Android 4.4.4
I think that this may be applicable to any phone or device running Android
Solution:
- Sync Contacts to Google
- Settings/Apps/All Apps
- select "Contacts"
- Force Stop
(Attention will loose contact settings and data after the next step, backup! You break it you own the pieces.)
- Delete Contacts Data
- Settings/Apps/All Apps
- select Contacts-Store
- Force Stop
- Delete Contacts-Store Data
- Settings/Sync/Google/Menu top right /Sync now
After re-syncing the contacts has finished, the issue was cleared.
Best regards, Euphoric

[Q] Download Manager running and stalling... Gmail related?

Hi all,
Have a strange "issue" with my Z3 Dual.
I noticed yesterday that the Downloader seemed to be running, even though I hadn't asked the phone to download anything. Sliding the notification open seems to suggest that the download isn't actually running, but simply keeps notifying.
Data is not being sent or received, and the items always seemed to be images. I had thought it was my work exchange email (through Mailwise) or maybe even IM chats downloading images. Uninstalled them and reinstalled and that did nothing.
Finally this morning, I received and email (through my Gmail) from my property manager, and it had a pdf, the same pdf was trying to be downloaded by the manager! So it appears, that on my phone at least, Gmail is asking my downloader to download, without the actual download initiating, but simply keeps a persistent notification there! I also have a nexus 9 with the newest Gmail and its not happening there.
Has anyone else had this issue? I'm about to roll back latest update of Gmail to see if it fixes.....

Rolling back Gmail to original version has not helped.
It has happened to me, and it seems to be when using autodownload on any of the email apps if it begins to download and you suddenly lose the data is connection it gets stuck.
Just go to settings and apps and go to the Download app and clear the cache and data and that will take care of the persistent notification, then try to adjust your autodownload settings.

Agree with everything you've said, but in gmail, i've auto download of attachments on wifi to OFF, and Images to "ASk before showing". Not sure there are any other settings I can access?
I have, for the time being, turned OFF notifications from the download app - this is obviously not idea if I really DID have an actual download of a large size or being stuck I have no way of monitoring it.
Open to any other suggestions / ideas

Same happened to me (also have Z3 dual) but updating Gmail app seemed to fix this issue.
I have the dual sim z3. I originally had my active tmobile SIM in SIM slot 2 when I put it in SIM Slot 1 the problem went away. Rebooted and no more download manager in the background.

Galaxy S7 Backup

Settings -> Backup and reset
Backup my data -> Backup now.
There are 5 checks:
1. Auto backup - on
2. Clock - on
3. Messages - on
4. Phone - on
5. Settings - on
When I press the button to backup these, all are getting saved, except Settings.
It goes up to 75% and it says Backup failed.
Anyone else getting the same results ?
Same for me at 84%
Does anyone have a solution for this ?
deleted by author, multiple post.
Happened to me today, first time I used my Samsung account to backup. Everything work but settings stopped at 80% and then got a message "backup failed"
Are you guys all using the stock launcher? I didn't try it before but I am running Nova for the past couple of days. I will switch back to stock and try again and update here.
I get a home screen notification that says a network error occurred. But that sounds bogus and unlikely.
Update: nope didn't make any difference using the stock launcher.
Same. 83% then backup failed.
Tried doing a backup using Smart Switch on my PC. It started the backup then a message popped up on the phone saying "Unfortunately the backup restore has stopped". Pressed OK and Smart Switch continued the backup, and completed at 100%. Only issues were S Planner, Videos and Applications were excluded "because there is no data on the device." Also, Memo failed to backup due to an "error", and the note says "Unable to proceed with data backup."
So, a bit of a mixed bag of succeeded, excluded, and failed. The one that seems most significant looks like Applications didn't get backed up.
Somebody who matters should complain to Samsung
Backup works on my Tab S2 T813. Phone settings might be the problem. This works because it has no phone.
I was getting the same Settings backup failure, but thought perhaps it was related to having some apps disabled with EZ Disabler. Enabled everything and the backup completed successfully. Disabled unwanted apps again and the backup failed. So, for now looks like it's related to disabling apps. Anyone else?
(Note: I still got errors when trying to use the Smart Switch backup on my PC even with apps enabled, so no joy there.)
I don't have a disabler but I did disable some crap in settings. I wonder what it could be.
my disabled progs are
com.facebook.appmanager
Facebook
Google App
Hangouts
Instagram
S. Health
S. Voice App
WhatsApp
I will try enabling the S. crap and see if it works.
That's it! When I enabled S. Health and S. Voice App it worked. Sounds pretty bogus to me but there we have it.
Thanks for your comments. Can you check if you have the same issue and if it works for you?
I turned all the permissions and notifications for these two off so they can't do anything but the backup still works ok.
Fixed! Thank you @samnada
One more update. Smart Switch was failing to backup my contacts and applications. Talked to Samsung Support, eventually got resolution for both.
For contacts run the Contacts app, More > Settings > Contact to display, select Device. Mine was originally set to All contacts. In Smart Switch go to More > Preferences > Backup items, select only Contacts and re-run. Contact backup worked.
Did the same for Applications, in Smart Switch, More > Preferences > Backup items, select Applications only. Backup worked. For some reason if all the items are selected the application backup said there was no data, and no apps were backed up. Selecting it by itself backed up all applications. They've supposedly submitted a bug report, so may be fixed some day.

Question Can't attach photo to message

Hi.
I can't attach a picture to a text message using samsung default Messages app. The only options I get when pressing the + icon left of the input field is 'quick response' and 'shedule message'. I have had the option to attach an image before but I don't remember when the last time it worked. What I have tried so far:
- Restart phone
- Clear cache
- Look at permissions and allow all
- Tried adding a photo to the clipboard and then paste it in the text field, but the image was not selectable and grayed out.
- Activating safe mode, but same result.
- Tried sharing a picture from my gallery, but I have no option to choose the Messages app.
What could be wrong? Why does it seem the feature is not there at all. Any help appreciated.
I do not want to use others message apps.
Just updated my phone, galaxy S21 plus, My message app version is: 13.0.00.113
When I try to go into settings, there are not any mentions of mms anywhere, just sms and chat.
All permissions is allowed.
Also, when I try to forward a picture earlier today when the problem started, it stated that the file was not supported, and that was a picture I already have received earlier on mms.
Already checked all provider settings, even resetting it and put in manually per my providers orders. And checked it with my older phone, and wife's phone, all correct.
Also tried to wipe partition cache.
The problem seems its not with the provider, or the phone itself, it's within the Samsung messages app. Even though it has all rights/clearenses.
Even tried the repair apps from recovery mode.
No one?
See my post here
You may want to use Google Messages.
Yeah, but, that's exactly what I was trying to avoid...
Try the factory load version if you haven't already.
The factory load versions tend to run better

Question Unable to got call screening to activate.

Hello everyone, i line in the UK and had call screening working and then one day it decided to deactivate and now it refuses to activate again. I can't figure out how to fix it or get it to activate. I'm in a supported country on a supported device. I am rooted but didn't think that would have anything to do with it but I used magisk to hide your from the phone app as well. Any tips would be grateful.
This happened to me once...
What I did was I force stopped, clear cache, & clear data.
If that didn't help, I uninstall updates. Then I updated from the Play Store. But when I did this, it was on Android 11 and stock phone app didn't initially have call screener. I imagine the Pixel 7's have it on the stock phone app, but doing this still might reset things and re-activate it.
Note: If it wasn't immediately available -- it didn't show the option of "Spam and Call Screen" -- it did take a while for it to somehow activate. Within the hour it all of a sudden popped up an alert when I opened the phone app spouting the feature. It might be that it takes activating through Google or your carrier somehow before it's enabled and displayed on the app. Then, again, this was on my Pixel 5 A11, so Call Screen isn't natively available off the bat -- so I imagine it would show up right away after uninstall updates and/or updating it from the Play Store.
If that isn't enough, you might consider clearing the cache & data from Play Services and Google Play Framework maybe....
Good luck and hope this helps...
