When this happened last month it was server side on google....iirc
Many thanks, I made a factory reset, it appeared, then vanished again...
It's a bug in the Google App and is missing for nearly everyone. I imagine Google are aware, but your guess is as good as mine at when a fix might turn up.
Mine works fine when I'm at home AND the Wi-FI is turned on at home and on the Pixel...
Do you folks have fine network location allowed? That is required for it to work.
I tried all the fixes, nothing can bring it back... I will hard reset again...
are you enrolled on the google apps beta program?

I had the same issue.
I tried to uninstall updates on google app but did not change anything.
I have found this thread and found answer to my problem:
https://support.google.com/pixelphone/forum/AAAAb4-OgUs2dHrNxLnIYM/?hl=by
It might be caused by associated accounts : I dissociated one of my 2 accounts, uninstalled app updates, updated the app and restarted the phone.
Weather showed upon restart...
UPDATE : Forget about it, the issue came back.. ?

Google App version 9.02 apparently broke it. If you rollback to pre 9.0 it will work properly again.
Beta 9.04 fixes this as of today....
Thanks, I confirm latest beta fixes it.

Has this app stopped working for anyone else here? I tried force closing, and clearing data. Also tried uninstalling and re installing the .apk.
Every time I try to launch it, I get a message that says "Unfortunately, News and Weather has stopped."
Haven't changed anything on the phone. It was working this morning, but when I tried it this afternoon, kept getting the error.
Thanks!

Likewise here in New Zealand on a Note 3. Fine last night, no good today. Have uninstalled, rebooted, tried several different apks now out there (1.3.11 being the newest) - all the same result. I sincerely hope this is a temporary thing, I depend on that app and really dislike the less flexible and more data-hungry alternatives like NewsHog.
same here
exact same thing here. only "new" thing i could remember was a chrome update last night (could definitely be another thing.. jus sayin). now the news and weather app doesn't work just as you guys described. no amount of data clearing and reinstallation works on my ics. - vancouver

Having same difficulty here with an HTC One, Android version 4.3, HTC Sense 5.0, Software number 3.24.531.3, HTC SDK API level 5.45. Likewise, have tried Force Close, clearing Data, clearing Cache. Seems to work once phone is rebooted; text and the local wx/temp shows up. However, when I click on the Genie widget, I (1) first see a progress bar at the bottom of a plain black field, then (2) get the popup, "Unfortunately, News & Weather has stopped. (OK)."
Agreed, it's an invaluable app which came installed on my One. Please fix if possible. Thanks!

Fixed here also now.
I had no Chrome update yesterday that I recall, and updated nothing today except for reinstalls of this app. If you think Chrome was the issue, maybe try winding its version back in app manager?
But I'm guessing it was unrelated, and therefore hopefully your app will come right also in the near future.

Yes, it's working fine as of this morning's reboot. Temporary glitch, apparently. Maybe related to "Google's server down" issue? Whatever it was...it's good to go now. Thanks!

Hi guys,
I'm on 4.4.2, rooted, and stock. I've been checking for system updates since the beginning of the month.
However, since the last week, my "System Update" button is missing. I have no idea how, or why, it's just not there. I go into "About phone", and it starts from "Status", "Legal Information", etc. I haven't made any system changes to the phone, so I'm pretty stumped as to how this happened.
I just went into the recovery and wiped the cache (didn't think it'd do anything, but tried it anyway. It took ages, and well it didn't do anything.
Any ideas?
Thanks!

I did this, now my home button doesn't work, and I can't get to the quick settings panel (the three finger swipe doesn't work, nor does the button from the right side of the notification pull down. Yup, twice. All I did was go into ROM toolbox, find the Settings app, and wiped the data.
I factory wiped it (I really didn't want to), and this fixed it. I still have no clue how in the world a button could have suddenly gone missing entirely. But bleh. It's fixed now.

I think I might know what the problem was. Unfortunately I didn't see this earlier. There was someone on the google play services thread that said the button disappeared for him when he downgraded his google play services app from the latest update to a previous update. Or he installed an older google play services version after updating to the new one. Did you happen to do that?

As stated above there was an update to Google Play Services that removed the update button (from stock). He confirmed by uninstalling updates to play services and had his system update button back. I couldn't personally tell you what version does this, but if you read the play services thread in themes in apps, it's there.
Okay so now, I did a factory reset, it works. BUT, I can't sign into Google. Each time I try I get the "There was a problem communicating with Google servers" message. I tried with 2-step AND without 2-step. Doesn't work. So my phone is pretty much unusable now without a Google account. Anyone have any ideas about this?
EDIT: Also, about the Play Services, I did mess with it, but that was a couple of months ago. I tried to do something stupid, and lost the Play Services completely, so I had to manually install the APK for it. The System Update thing went missing only a few days ago.
Well I'm on 100% stock and locked boot loader but I was stumped to see the same issue on my nexus last week. Also cleared caches and settings but eventually had to do a factory reset which cured the issue.

Did you mess with the google play services app? You don't have to be rooted to install apks and you could have reverted play services to original settings.

Nope, just manually updated gmail apk. Other than that not rly anything special. Solved now so no big issue but I noticed this last week.
I have recently purchased a Mi Mix 2s but I have started getting issues with forced closed apps, firstly its Alexa it forces closed almost immediately. Facebook closes if I look on facebook market place.
I think becuase the app is slow to respond its being flagged as crashed, is there a way to increase the time an app stalls before it flagged as crashed?

The app work because you didn't use the mic I think.
I discovered many things:
- if you want to use the alexa assistant with your phone in place of Google Home, if Alexa is not set as default in the parameters (Parameters, Installed applications, "..." top right corner, Manage default apps, Vocal assistant, Use with shortcuts (sorry, i translate FR->ENG, it's maybe different)), the app is crashing every time
- if alexa is set as the default vocal assistant, the app is working, but crash when you start the request with the mic (center button in alexa app).
I think, it's a problem with MIUI, because Alexa work great on my old Nexus 6p on Android 8.1.
Hey everyone!
I have a problem with OnePlus 7 Pro's Settings App.
After last software update (Oxygen OS 10.0.7GM21BA) Settings app gone crazy... I've found a temporary fix by updating app and uninstalling app's updates, but after reboot the problem reappears...
It seems to be solved by it's own, but this happened and the last time and got back...
Let's hope that it doesn't come back again
Can you disable auto-update? I've had to do that in the past when some updates broke applications. I'm not sure that would work with settings, but if you can do it, I'd give it a try.

My note 20 ultra is having an issue where certain times when I go back to home screen, the app I was on leaves a ghost image on the screen. Only way to seem to get rid of it is to reboot device. Have to do this once a day. Tried with Nova and One UI but no dice fixing without reboot.

Did you set your phone up from scratch or did you transfer data from another phone. If you transferred from another phone there's been numerous post here about bugs and they were fixed with a FDR.
From the boot menu clear the Sytem Cache... this cures many glitches.
Find the app doing it and clear its cache and data if need be.
If that's the only issue with that load and nothing gets it done, disable the pop up notifications/overlay permissions for that app. Not sure how it's displayed in settings on Q.

Could the MS apks be the root cause?
I don't use any of the MS apks, in fact they're all blocked.
If you do a hard reset and it comes back, you'll have gained nothing. Most times it's a settings issue or a misbehaving 3rd party app.
Have had the most trouble with 3rd party launchers. Best to avoid them as they can goof up a lot including boot up.
>Keep playing with it< and try some Google searches as others will many times have the same issues.
Try package blocking suspect apks and see if that ferrets it out. Use Device Manager to see what apps are loaded in the memory cache when it goes nuts.
I've used this to track down a nasty one, once I cleared the data on the right system apk all was good.
Best of all if it happens again, I know what to do.
A last resort before a hard reset is to do a setting reset however this is a global settings nuke.
Again, clear the system cache and then suspected apk caches however sometimes you'll need to clear their data as well. PD MDM is a better option to clear apk caches/data in as it leaves no nulls or something that clearing the same in settings DOES.
Sounds skewy but been there, done that.

Back up everything to Samsung cloud and do a FDR. If that doesn't fix the issue just restore and you're right back where you were.
There have been several reports of bugs on this forum and they were mostly due to restoring data from another phone.

3rd party launchers can put you in boot loop hell.
Had it happen twice in 2 weeks.
Was thinking it might be another app but on the 3rd reload I stayed with 1 UI...
2 months later still stable as a rock.
If a launcher is acting even a little slow or twitchy... ditch it.

I don't like the bloody white icon labels...
1 UI is fast and the most stable. After seeing all manner of screw ups on 3rd pretty launchers and 2 back to back reloads... done.
Got rid of most of the bloody white except the page indicator. Samsung morons... even with only a home page it still shows, jeeeeezse!
Nothing in the Good Lock apps to remove them either.
