Hi,
I'm currently in Thailand for holidays and had to realize that without an internet connection, Google maps don't work properly.
When I start the app I got the position immediately but it doesn't update. So the blue dot stays at the same spot until it finally turns grey.
I also had the same problem with other map apps.
Weirdly, navigation DOES work!
So, whenever I go into navigation mode I'm navigated without a hitch...
Anyone else faced the problem and knows how to resolve it?
I tried all the obvious... Checked permissions, uninstalled maps and Google play services after deleting date, logged out of my Google account, cleared cache in recovery...
Oh and by the way... Location history doesn't work. But I guess that's because it's a China rom?!
Thanks!

I dont really know what you mean with "Google Maps doesnt work properly", I only know, that you can download offline maps when you have wlan, so maybe that's a possibility?

No of course I got maps downloaded.
As described ( ) there's a problem with the GPS.
I only get a GPS fix immediately when I open Google maps (after force close). Then GPS connection is lost immediately (blue dot doesn't move and becomes grey).
Zero idea why... As navigation with Google maps works flawlessly - also in offline mode.

Oh ok, now I know what you mean
Never faced this issue. For me Maps (also in non navigation mode) works fine. Maybe something with the aggressive power saving mode from emui?

That's what I was thinking...
Have you ever tried using maps in flight mode (GPS on of course)?
Because back home (with 3g/mobile internet) maps worked fine I think.
EDIT: one more interesting thing... I realized GPS works for a short time (like 10 minutes) after I was connected to a WiFi. Then it stops working.

[Q] Wifi & network location unavailable after switching location off & on again
Hi there,
I found this strange but reproduceable bug on my N5's location services and was wondering if it's the same for you.
Turn off location via settings or quick settings
Turn it back on
You'll be asked to accept Google location terms
Switch to battery saving mode (only wifi & network, no GPS)
After these steps, my N5 cannot find it's location via Wifi & mobile network anymore. In Maps it might still show the blue dot but moving around it won't update. When using any other app which will try to get a fresh location it's a no go. Like Google+, try and make a post with location, no joy.
I have to reboot to get it working again.
Did you agree to those Google terms? If not that's the reason...

I agreed to those of course. If you cancel that it will turn back to device (GPS) only

Just got it 2 weeks ago, all is stock, locked and original.
Did you try any other app besides Maps? That sometimes uses last known location and shows blue icon.

You're right, mine also won't find my position without GPS. However a reboot fixes it for me.
Somewhat glad to see others having this bug too. Indeed a reboot fixes it right up so it's not a huge deal.
Under normal circumstances I would't change this setting ever, but when I just got my N5 I wanted to test the GPS only feature. After turning it back to Battery saver I noticed and started investigating what caused it.
Thanks for testing mate!

No problem. I'm glad also to be aware of it now, so that I can avoid standing somewhere I need and it won't find it
Anyone else willing to try this? The N5 from a friend of mine did not show this behavior. And another did. Weird bug.

I have the problem on my 16 GB black nexus 5 with stock Rom and no root. I tested with dalvik and art but the problem exist. I have found 3 solutions:
1- reboot phone (temporary solution)
2- stop Google Play Services (temporary solution)
3- uninstall updates of Google Play Services use with stock/no update (permanent solution)
one more thing; when I can't get a location fix with network/wireless GPS mode on Google Maps or any other application, I can see a circle on " Yandex Navigation" that shows my location.
but more interesting thing is I can see a circle that shows my location on Yandex Navigation when my GPS is completely off.
I think this problem is about Google Play Services or Google Location Services. I hope someone find a solution.

Thanks for your (rigorous :good tests.
Reboot was the one I used to fix it, didn't know about the others you found.
In a strange way glad to see it's a software bug, which means it's fixable. I guess the friend I mentioned has not updated the Play services ever, that would explain why he is not affected.
happens to me as well on a Nexus 7 (2013). I've found that battery drains faster even when in deep sleep
Me and my colleague also have this issue...
Completely wiped and factory reset to stock, same prob.
Reboot solves it until you turn location services off and on again, or go from "device only" mode to "battery saving".
A quicker way then reboot (reboot actually does the same as this step) is go to settings, apps, running, Google Services (you might have 2), there STOP the GoogleLocationService (it will stop and reload the service)
Location should work again in battery saving mode...
Thanks for that one Foggy79!
Reboot or restarting the google play services takes much longer (especially when you have to disable ADM first) then your trick of only stopping the only location service.

No problem.
I just reproduced the issue on an other colleague's N5, that makes 3 ppl here in the office, can't be coincidence.
If the GoogleLocationService could restart automatically when you turn on "Location" and agree the terms, that would be great...

It appears the issue is fixed for me.
I have Google Play services 4.3.24 so it might be fixed behind our backs.
Now when you turn the location off and on again, the GoogleLocationService is automaticly restarted also
Fixed for me as well with the new Google Play Services!
The new version now indeed restarts the LocationService again.
I'm glad Google also reads XDA (j/k)
Now if they can get GoogleLocationsManager and NlpLocationsReciever to stop running when Locations Services are turned off completely, that'd be great.

I use Google Maps for navigation to and from work, and lately I've been getting a periodic situation where the turn-by-turn directions stop, and all I get is "Turn Right" or "Stay Straight" instead of normal "In 800 feet, turn right on Main Street"...
I've been able to temp fix it by going into Settings, Location, Maps, and toggling Location Services and Location History off and on (with a reboot for good measure), but it's super-annoying and I can't pinpoint when it will work properly and when it won't. Sometimes it works just fine in the morning but quits working properly in the evening of the same day. No changes made in the interim that might cause it.
Anyone see this and know a fix? I'm on Mahdi ROM latest version with latest version of Maps. Maps version doesn't seem to matter, it happened on an older version and then the most recent version again this evening.

Same issue on stock. I searched it up and it seems that you have to reinstall the GoogleTTS.apk. I tried that and have the same issue.
Try a different tts app

Suggestions? I don't think its a text to speech issue, it seems maps goes into short mode or dummy mode...

I have the same issue. On stock Android (4.4.2), intermittent lack of spoken street names. I usually resolve by going in to the text to speech settings and playing the sample. Once I do that, everything seems fine.
Which I had a better idea what was causing TTS to occasionally go sideways so I could fix the root instead of this silly smack-upside-the-head intervention.
This is still happening for me. I'll check the tts settings next time.

I've got a problem. When I open Google Maps it doesn't seem to activate my GPS so my location is decided by the operator-network and/or wifi, and is not very precise. I've tried to keep Google Maps open for a long time but my location is never that precise as when the GPS is activated. Also if I log into Android Device Manager on the web, I only get a location with an accuracy of 1.5-2 kilometres so that's neither located by GPS.
But if I then enter a route in Google Maps and use the Navigation, the GPS is turned on and everything is fine. It's the same if I use Sygic GPS Navigation. I've got Avast Anti-Theft installed on my phone and if I log into avast.com and send a location command to my phone, it's also located by GPS with an accuracy of 5 metres.
I've installed 'GPS Status & Toolbox' and set the app to show an icon in my navigation bar when the GPS is used. And it's the same as described above - when Google Maps is open there's no icon but when I use Navigation the icon it's there.
I'm pretty sure that on my last phone (Samsung Galaxy S II) with Android 4.4.2 Google Maps also used the GPS and I've got a precise location every time, so my question is how to get it in the same way on my new phone (Sony Xperia Z1) with Android 4.4.4? There are many times I just want to see on Google Maps exactly where I am without using the Navigation directions to a specific location.

i don't know about the gps not turning on at all, but it is a somewhat known bug on googles end when wifi is used to help location services, it frequently causes accuracy issues.
try turning off your wifi and see how it acts.
Yeah, off wifi it's more accurate. But yes, rooter, just cleared my app data and that did the trick, thanks.
All of a sudden when I try to use waze it can't find a GPS signal.
All my other GPS apps works fine (Google maps, runkeepe etc).
When I restart the phone and open waze again it finds the location and after a few seconds the signal is lost and after that it won't get any signal again.
It happened all of a sudden!
The GPS is on and on high accuracy,
I tried to reinstall the app,
I clear cached data.
wipe cache
Nothing works.
same here
same here, all other apps working fine
this issue started with update 5.1.11 with me
also waze does work for me after a reboot ... briefly then loses signal after a few seconds
I was able to fix this by always launching Waze from the "GPS Locker" app. You can get the app from the Play Store.
Ok so I tried everything and still no GPS connection to Waze. Started yesterday out of no where (didn't update anything) and now I can't use Waze at all. Google Maps works fine, gps tested fine , only Waze is not working.
Any ideas?
sounds like gps time sync error.
Same here, works briefly after I restart my phone. I also think it has something to do with the update I did.
Any solution?
Exact same problem here...

Same issue here. Waze is working fine on the smartphone itsef (but only if I enable advanced Battery optimization). But through Android Auto the GPS is not taking position (only briefly after rebooting phone)....
Google maps though is working just fine!
OK on mine but I am using the One+ Android 9 beta and also the latest Waze Beta on my 6. Used it from Somerset to London today OK.
Continues to be OK
Same issue here, but i thought it was due to the Beta i am using, so i filled a report on the beta forums of waze.
Same here.
was working fine yesterday and sudnely afternoon waze cant fined GPS signal
A lot of people report the same issue on the OnePlus forum also.
I got contact with Waze support. After the starndard mail with the obvious suggestions, they've asked me to reproduce the issue in debug mode and to send them the log files.
I suggest that everyone of us contacts Waze support in order give them access to as much cases as possible. The more notifications of the problem they get, the quicker we will have a solution.

By entering 2##2 in the search box and then restart Waze (same to exit debug mode).
When you contact support, they send you mail with pretty clear instructions on how to send the report logs.
Please make sure to contact them first, otherwise they cannot link the report logs to the correct ticket!

It would help staff if people with One Plus devices could submit their debug logs for analysis.

If you disable the "Advanced battery optimization" it simply won't work anymore.
I enabled the advanced optimization again and set waze AND android auto (which I use) to: "don't optimize", after that, waze is able to position agian after a second or 10.
Though, when using it trough android auto, the GPS signal is lost, to only return for a few seconds if you reboot the phone.
Google Maps though is working just fine without any issues.
Updated Oxygenos yesterday, same problem after update. Anyone who has a solution or is in contact with Oneplus?
Has anyone else had the issue of Maps crashing when you press the start navigation button? This is the first device I've ever had this issue on, and have tried clearing app data / disable re-enabling / reboot.
Mine has been working fine sofar.
I used it several times yesterday with no issues.

Did you migrate your apps from another phone? If so, you boo-booed. Never do that...always install apps from scratch.
Install GPS Status from the store and make sure your GPS is working properly.
No crashing, but I noticed that notifications came set to Japanese.

GPS works fine. Waze navigation works fine. And I did migrate apps from my previous device, but it was from my Google account, which reinstalls all apps from the play store.
Also, Maps is a system app, so it was not part of that restore process, it came pre-installed. I have also cleared all Maps app data to no effect.
