Black Screen and Not Powering On - Nexus 5 Q&A, Help & Troubleshooting

Hi guys,
TLDR; Phone won't turn on, notification light flashes red once on power up (sometimes), black screen all the time. :crying:
So my brother has asked me to try and fix his Nexus 5 as he isn't tech savvy at all.
So the problem he is having started when he tried powering the phone on and it started to boot up and then started resetting iteself.
It now will not power on at all and doesn't seem to be on at all.
When holding the power button, it will sometimes flash the notification light (at the bottom) red for a second or two. No other response from the phone.
I've tried holding the power button for up to 5 minutes with nothing. I've tried holding the V+ key with the power button for a few seconds up to a few minutes then tried pressing the buttons expected to get to a reset menu with no indication of anything.
I'm kind of lost and was wondering if anyone has had these issues before and know what is the best issue to try and repair?
Thanks

It could be a faulty power button which is a common issue with the Nexus 5.
Remove the logic board, clean around the power button with isopropyl alcohol, dry it, quickly press and release the power button using more pressure than normal, re-install, and try to boot.
You could also try this: hold volume + button and connect the phone to a computer using a USB cable.

Thanks audit13, I'll give it a shot and shout back if it works

[Q] HTC one S wont start, no blinking, no led

Hi guys !
My HTC One S died yesterday just before going to bed.
It was 10% battery, I used it for 10-15mn and it went down to 3% and then 1% and shut down just before I plug it to the wall charger.
I let it there for 5mn and tried to power it on but nothing happened. I noticed that the charging led was not even working.
I let it overnight charging and this morning, still nothing. I tried to enter bootloader with power+volume down, nothing happen
This morning, I tried :
- 2 hours usb charging, not detected by the computer, no led, won't start even in bootloader
- 2 hours wall charger charging. Still no led, won't start
Any idea on what to try ?

Ok, simulated battery pull.
hold the phone under bright light (sensor see's the light and allows to power on, something about a feature to prevent resetting while the phone is in your pocket). press power button, press and hold power button if that doesn't work.

Maybe it is locked up, and really has been charging. Press and hold power button for 10 seconds.
Some have had success pulling the sim card, and then pressing the power button. Then when it turns on reinserting sim card.

Factory Reset option: would erase phone storage though.
If you can’t turn HTC One S on or access settings, you can still perform a factory reset by using the hardware buttons on HTC One S.
Press and hold the VOLUME DOWN button, and then press and hold the POWER button.
Wait for the screen with the three Android images to appear, and then release the POWER and VOLUME DOWN buttons.
Press VOLUME DOWN to select FACTORY RESET, and then press the POWER button.

Others have switched to trying to charge it connected to USB port and have it suddenly come back to life after a while.
Thanks for the answer

[Q] Nexus 5 won't power on

Hi,
I'm running the latest stock android kitkat on my nexus 5. I recently powered off the device and it won't power back on.
When I powered off the battery was at about 90%.
I have tried:
- Holding down the power button for 3 seconds
- Holding down the power button for 30 seconds
- Holding down the power button for 90 seconds
- Holding down the power and both volume buttons
- Powering up the device while it's plugged in to USB
None of these seem to result in my Nexus 5 powering up.
I had this previously happen new years day. I decided to go home to try to fix the problem when my phone magically started working when I hit the power button for the regular amount of time.
The power button has no problem turning on and off the screen when the phone is powered up.
Anyone have any tips on how I can get this thing powered up?
I have a feeling I'm going to have to RMA this phone.

Yeah most likely you are going to have to RMA, but before that just try this. Try connecting your phone to a wall outlet and don't press anything and wait for 10 seconds. Do you see a battery icon on the screen? If not, then unplug it, hold both volume buttons, then plug it back in. If your phone actually does work, you should get to the boot loader screen.

Phone won't boot up

I have researched the "related threads" and none are similar to the issue I am having.
The phone turned off midcall and fails to turn on afterwards. I thought it was the battery, but it still fails to turn on after charging over night.
It boots up to show the logo, after a battery pull and turns back off.
If I I press down the power button + down volume+ menu, I get the warning about a custom install of an OS may damage the phone and if i want to continue to press the volume up, or cancel.
The phone only lasts about 5 seconds, after every battery pull, other wise it won't turn on again.
I haven't gotten a blank white screen nor the Android logo.
Thank you.
Update: I believe I confirmed it is a power button issue.
What I used to confirm it was pressing the volume down button and menu without the power button and was able to see the Warning as if I had pressed all three. Also, the phone vibrates as soon as I place in the battery.
Issue now is: Supposedly the cause is due to a stuck power button, but physically the power button is not stuck. It clicks when pressed.

N5 wont turn on- does not react to power/volume combos

Hey Guys,
sadly my Nexus 5 suddenly turned off and wont turn on again. When not connected to the charger it does not react to any button combinations. When connected it loops the google screen (the first one you see on boot, that shows whether phone is unlocked or not), but reacts to button combos, but still reboots into the loop immediately. The phone is charged and runs the latest cm13 snapshot.
Hope you guys can help!
Thanks and greetings from germany
Could be a power button problem.
Try gently tapping the power button against the edge of table to see if you can "unstick" it. If that doesn't work, open the phone and clean around the button.
Final solution may be to replace the power button.

Please help me study

I own a redmi 5a and I use it for my studies. That phone is one of the two smartphones that we have in our family. Because of it being old, the battery didn't hold the charge well so I got it changes maybe 5-6 days ago.. Today, all of a sudden, while I was in the middle of solving a model question paper, it stopped working. The screen went totally black. Now when I press the power button, only the notification light blinks and nothing else happens. I tried keeping it pushed for maybe 1 minute as well but only notifications light keeps blinking. I tried pressing volume up+power button, volume down+power button, volume up+volume down+power button but nothing happens. Only notifications light is blinking. It does not blink when I don't press any button. And it does not blink when I don't press the power button. Can anyone please help me and tell me what to do? If this phone stays like this I will not be able to study. I really want to do good in my exam.
Get the orignal battery back, connect the device with cable to charge, and then try to power on it. Good luck to you.
