Since some got their bootloaders unlocked with an exploit before August, does this mean people can start development on TWRP and ROMs?

Yes devs have started building TWRP now .You can expect the official twrp in the comming days

Dont we need an unlockable bootloader though? From that article it looks like HMD are just doing what they should be in sharing the code.

There was an exploit (bug) found in Oreo [Edit: Also in Pie Beta, before August] before August security patch, which allowed some people to unlock their bootloaders permanently.
So, now, those people can start developing custom ROMs and custom recoveries like TWRP for our Nokia 7 plus using the source code. :good:

i can confirm, have unlocked half year and after some problems (missed gestures/liftup/playcertification with magisk installed, not upgradable without patching boot.img etc) finaly after november update all(not ota) work fine, also play is certified and updatable...
edit: i unlock with pie dp before august

So, the kernel code will be useful only for those who have unlocked their bootloader. For others, it doesn't make any difference, right?

What is that mean and what can we do now, geniuses? ??

Yup. If Nokia does release a bootloader unlock for us other users, then it'll be useful for us too. But eh, I wouldn't count on it.

This means that those people with unlocked bootloaders (though there are only a few with those) can now start making or use TWRP and Custom ROMs.
This was not possible without the source code, so this is a thing to be mildly happy about, as still, most of us can't unlock our bootloaders yet.

Thanks. I liked this phone with oreo much more than pie. It became heavy and slow..

was there ever a free bootloader unlock or only sunshine?

I like my droid mini so much I went out and got another.
To my good fortune, I discovered this "new" one has SU4.21 !!!
That means the efuse has not been blown and I could bootloader unlock.
The question is, was there ever a free method or is sunshine the only way?
Dreaming of cyanogenmod and twrp on the mini, would be perfect.

very sorry for the posts, I was excited and genuinely thought this was a new cross-motorola exploit and didn't realize the specifics
8960 is different enough from the 8974 to be immune?
again my apologies
ps. the Droid Razr series was also 8960, how come motopocalype doesn't work on the mini/maxx ?

No worries. I haven't looked into Razr much, but typically these vulnerabilities are quickly patched by Motorola. I would guess that device released after motopocalypse was released or was patched shortly after.

very exciting update
I've been told (very reliably) that a new exploit is on the way and will work on the 8960 pro (ie. mini/maxx/ultra)
unclear if it still requires the SU4 rom from June 2014 vs will work on the newer SU6 patched rom (even sunshine will not work on SU6) but it was verified by directly examining aboot and that the trustzone is only slightly different on the 8960pro vs 8974
(this time I won't post it in a dozen places - I suspect the release will pretty much spread like wildfire on its own)

If I had to guess I'd suspect he is doing the proper notifications first to Motorola before releasing it. In which case as long as we don't accept OTA updates we should be okay.

Will for one your not well informed Motorola is not sending down any more OTA updates for us they told us they were not they left us dead in the water and stuck on 4.4.4. Also you don't have to contact Motorola about bootloader unlocks don't know who told you that and who would take the time all its doing is allowing us to install user made/custom roms and android is open source so its legal.

1. there are plenty of minor updates from SU4 to SU6 that were OTA and it stayed 4.4.4, they are just patches and there could easily be one that makes it SU6-7.4 - are you misunderstanding me that I am saying they are doing something more? What I meant was, if there is a a SU6-7.4 do NOT install it - though we can still always roll back to SU6-7(.0) via RSDlite - the nightmare would be a SU7 that prevents rollback to SU6
2. I assure you there is another bl unlock coming, this is completely confirmed.
I just don't know exactly when he is releasing it and I don't want to pester him - he's already proven he knows darn well what he is doing and is fully capable of producing the unlock and has already done so for other models - the catch is the unlock is not going to be phone specific so someone is going to have to package it for us
You've got me curious now. I haven't seen anyone else release a bootloader unlock in years.

He didn't release a bootloader unlock for "the other one" either. In fact, the POC he did release required an unlocked bootloader, and custom kernel.

He (re)documented the vulnerability and documented a full exploitation technique(and did a great job). However the code he released can not be used to unlock a production device. The code requires an unlocked bootloader and a custom kernel. If you read the comments on his disclosure page, you will see that.

I'm not implying he's lying it all. The vulnerability he documented is certainly legitimate. I'm just stating you might not get some "clickheretounlock.exe". Somebody might have to do some work to code/package/turn the vulnerability into working unlock solution. Or maybe he will do it.

oh I get that distinct feeling that he does not intend to release an actual executable, for reasons unclear, either legal or less responsibility
but I suspect he is going to lay out the steps pretty clearly and likely some source code and there is enough talent and desire around here to make it happen shortly after that

Root for Nougat Beta?

I am currently running the Verizon Nougat Beta from this post: http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=3502902. I am really enjoying it, but it is VERY bloated (curse you Verizon). I am using a package disabler, but I would like to know if there's a way to root it. I can't live without deabloating (for real) and MODS. :silly: Help would be appreciated.
I'm looking for this as well (I'm on the official T-Mobile beta ROM) but I don't think anyone is jumping on this due to the fact not many people have the beta, let alone the device specific ROM. Most likely once the official update rolls out so will the root method and hopefully, just maybe, even a bootloader unlock possibility.
If Dev's root the beta the. The official release will be rooted too. Since it's the same kernel version.

If devs get the beta rooted then release the root method before official nougat is released Sammy may fix the exploit. If devs get root on beta, they should keep it on the dl until official is dropped.

Android naugat-oreo development

Its been about year now, and 5 month in some countries, that nokia 6 launched, but no one has developed any single rom for nokia 6, even naugat roms, yeah we are using upto date naugat but custom roms are faster and with more features, with more abilities, official oreo also lauched on 4th October with pixel 2, but no one has developed or developing oreo....yeah its coming to nokia 6 by this month but if any dev would be developing any oreo rom for nokia six then we must be enjoying it, with faster performance, the custom roms are too fast then a stocked rom.....
So its my kind request please develope custom rom for this phone too..
Thanks
I agree it has been really disappointing that there has been no custom roms however the reason simply lies with two things; firstly the phone wasn't a major seller meaning it's community isn't anywhere near as large as other phones, secondly the phone didn't have any good rooting tools meaning that it was as near as impossible to make a rom that works. Even worse news is that a 2018 variant is rumoured to be in the work with different internals meaning if someone can't find a way of forcing user roms on it, the devices days are numbered, I mean look how tardy Nokia has been with updates already on its release year!
But still, even the last 4 nokia android phone namely nokia x,x+,xl and x2 dual sim, all were having good custom roms, even lumia 520 was also booted to android, then why this phone can't, if devs can boot a windows phone to android then they can develop anything, the thing is they need to work on it
simply because the bootloader isn't unlocked yet by Nokia .
Nokia said that they will provide bootloader unlock with the Oreo update.
There are many reasons for the almost nonexistent development right now. One being that there isn't any unlock tool. Secondly Nokia is yet to release sources too. Both these factors play a major role in custom ROM development.
Let's hope that they unlock and release sources, otherwise we're at a dead end

If Oppo doesn't Provide the Unlocking Code or Support Fastboot Binaries, then it would only depend on some Tricks or Any Loopholes that would do the same.
Lets take the Eg. Of Asus Zenfone Max Pro M1 , it has got bootloader unlocked and within a month Custom Roms have started to come up.
Now lets take the Other Eg. Motorola Droid Turbo (Int. Version of Moto Turbo which i was using in 2015) it doesnt have Unlockable bootloader , but within 1 year developers have successfully Unlocked the Phone!
And another, Droid Turbo 2 (Int. Version Of Moto X Force which im using now) it also had unlockable bootloader , and its going to be 2years but till now People are unsuccessful for getting Root/Unlocking due to the fix in Loophole.
So if Oppo is Not Providing the Unlocking Code or It doesn't Support Unlocking (as far as i know now) its not to be correct to assume it would get rooted/unlocked but can only hope for good.
Realme 1 has mediatek P60 AI chipset. Also Android 8 doesn't support AI feature but Android 9 (Android P) does. ColorOs 5 is supported and powered of AI feature like Battery, Camera, etc. Maybe Company push stock Android. But isn't bad ColorOS.

I think its never gonna happen! Its like Same, Mi rolling out Stock Android 8.0 insted of MIUI 10 or Honor rolling Stock Android 8.1 insted of EMUI!
I didnt used colorOS or any oppo phone before but MIUI,EMUI,UX5.0,Touchwizz... and i didnt keep up with them especially with MIUI and EMUI!
I keep Moto as my primary device (since 2013) due to stock android and simple interface.
ColorOS wouldn't be the deal breaker for the most but for some (like me) its making me think twice before buying

Project treble means to have separate Vendor partition , so that GSI can be boot without compiling a seperate rom with a specific vendor tree. But it dosent mean treble=unlocking

Yeah, but it's a little less difficult for the developers to unlock the phone. I think you know that starting with Android 8.x (Oreo), Google separated the Vendor and Manufacturer. That means the OS can be updated without having to touch the vendor implementation. Before project treble, The Vendors have to wait for the Unlock Code from the manufacturer which was very lengthy and delaying process, at least project treble solves this issue.

Only Manufacturers signed images can be flashed with locked bootloader , so if you are planning to boot a LOS GSI you will need a Unlocked bootloader , and by no way you can sign a image as same as manufacturer so jt will fail, as far as unlocking is concerned its in the hand of oppo only bcoz i heard that oppo deleted the fastboot binaries of the phone and to unlock the bootloader ,there must be a loophole or some think which can be exploited otherwise it would suffer the same fate as droid turbo 2. In future what happens i/we dont know but till now its correct to assume that phone is unlockable bcoz oppo is not supporting bootloader unlocking
Here, look at this,
There's an option to allow permissions for unlocking Bootloader, so i think in future maybe Oppo will allow modifications.

Yes it is possible. Kernel sources are needed to make a stable custom rom. But custom recoveries like TWRP can be made if bootloader is unlocked. You can go as far as rooting your phone and maybe install GSI roms. But those roms may not be stable.

Yes it is possible. Kernel sources are needed to make a stable custom rom. But custom recoveries like TWRP can be made if bootloader is unlocked. You can go as far as rooting your phone and maybe install GSI roms. But those roms may not be stable.

I guess we do need to device source code to compile the TWRP. My bad I forgot. We need the source code so we can go somewhere otherwise just an unlocked bootloader is useless.
