Hello all, happy new year 2019!
I just bought the Huawei P20 4/128 (Malaysian Set - Midnight Blue). I directly updated it to EMUI 9 after finished all initial setup, factory reset it and the setup everything from scratch. The EMUI 9 itself is fine, as I previously owned a Honor Play for 1 month before I sell it because of bad camera quality.
However, I find this phone is occasionally lagged or not so smooth as I expected for such a phone with Kirin 970 processor, especially when navigating inside 3rd party apps. Coming from Xiaomi Mi 8, it's no brainer that Mi 8 with MIUI 10 is way more responsive and speedy. But, the performance with 3D games such as Asphalt 9 with highest graphics setting is no issue at all.
I already tried to:
- Uninstall bunch of useless Huawei's bloatware such as FB, preinstalled games, etc with adb shell method (since I don't have root access)
- Change the windows animation speed to none in Developers Options
- Clear the cache in EMUI Recovery
It helps a little bit to make this phone smoother but not as smooth as Mi 8 or Honor Play (which is weird, considering the Honor Play is positioned below the P20).
Do you guys here care to share about your experience with your P20 and EMUI 9? Do you also experience what I just described above?
Thank you
Try to enable performance mode in battery settings, it helped me to reduce lag a little bit
I would suggest you to enable "force gpu rendering" under developer options. I'm on emui 8.1 and mostly lag free. However, i agree about the responsiveness issues, I own an OG Pixel, and used to own an OP3T, they are both more responsive. I'm probably not gonna buy Huawei again!

I'm sure it would reduce a lag a little bit but I have to sacrifice the battery life and I need to carry the supercharger everywhere I go :crying:

I tried to enable force gpu rendering option as suggested and yes it helps to reduce the lag a bit (thanks!), but still not so smooth as Mi 8 or Honor Play that I owned before this P20. I think the main issue was the EMUI itself or the kernel isn't really optimized by Huawei's dev.
It's emu9. I have a honor play and updated to emui9 and couldn't use it because of the lag so I downgraded back to emui8.
I think it's the P20 phone overall. I'm in EMUI 8.1, and there is noticeable lag unless i turn down the screen resolution to hd+, Huawei is pathetic!
i remove most of huawei ****ty apps.
my launcher is nova and no lags in emui9
Interesting.. my battery life and performance is better with emui 9.0 than with emui 8.1.
Maybe do a factory reset?
Got EMUI 9 today. I think it's a bit faster than 8.1, lags less for sure. I am not a big fan of the new look tho!

I also removed/disabled most of Huawei's pre-installed apps using the ADB Shell methods, but only the non-essentials such as Facebook (and all of its inheritance). I choose to keep the Huawei's gallery app, app market, etc because I think these apps was baked into EMUI itself and I afraid if I disabled them it will make the system unstable.

Yes, I would also reccomand this, not to delete essentials apps which are deeply integrated into EMUI.

Does anyone here regularly enjoy the fun contents from the 9GAG app? I noticed that this app is lagging so much, the strange thing is, this does not happen with my previous phone. Navigating the maps in Google Maps also resulted in lags.
Anyone here experienced the same issue? Honestly, I don't want to part ways with my beloved P20 (especially after I bought the RhinoShield SolidSuit Carbon Fibre case, it's expensive but really worth the price), but my honest opinion is the performance for day to day use sometimes is not acceptable anymore for the phone in this price point. Now, I'm thinking of selling this very pristine condition P20 and get the second hand Galaxy S9 since it's getting much cheaper now
*EDIT:
I tried to disable all Knuckle Gestures and Advanced Visual Effect in Accessibility. Sure, the animation effect is a little bit off now. However, I feel the overall system is much responsive now.

Hi everyone,
Has anyone tried to put Nova launcher on their Honor 8? I have recently decided to change the look of my phone a bit so i downloaded the Nova launcher (prime). I managed to modify it to my liking but there is one problem with it - i think that it is slowing my phone down a bit. App opening seems to be slower and even scrolling through pages in apps is a bit laggy (facebook, instagram, chrome, etc..). I think that my phone is working better on stock emui launcher. I really like the google feed which is not available on EMUI 5.0.1
Is there anyone else who encountered the same issue? Is there any way to fix this? I tried to change the animation time in phone and nova settings and it is not helping...
Thank you.
I have Nova on mine and it doesn't run slow at all. Maybe try turning off App Animations in the Look and Feel section?
I've been running Nova on mine for over a year, and can say that I have never noticed any slowdowns at all.
Same as the person above have been running nova launcher since i bought it back in september and havent experianced any slowdowns
Ok then the problem seem to be with my phone only. Maybe i should restore it to factory settings as i haven't done that yet. I guess i will just stay with stock emui launcher for now. .. Thanks for help

Hey just convert NOVA LAUNCHER to system app thats it. It runs flawlessly
Ran it on my Honor 8 and never noticed a slowdown with it.
Thank you for you help regarding it. I wouldn't say that the phone is lagging with Nova launcher. It just seems to be slower than with EMUI launcher which is what i don't really like. Maybe it is just in my head. I think i will stay on emui launcher for now.

Try removing the spyware and resource hogs 'facebook, instagram' and I am sure it will run much faster its certainly not Nova.

Using magisk module!
Some tips I discovered. It starts to run smoothly after I granted acces in advanced settings security device administrator, then Apps- Special settings - ignore battery otimization, draw over the apps, write system settings
Been using Nova Classic since I got my phone. Since I love the old Holo look I prefer this version. Never looked back. Works great.
Still using my Honor 8 on Android 6 and EMUI 4.1.
See no reason to upgrade.
I'm considering the M5 8.4 to replace my aging Nexus 7 (2013) and would like some feedback on the EMUI software experience.
Do you like the skin? Is it similar to stock Android?
Since there probably won't be many ROM options, how is Huawei's track record with updates?
Thanks,
Rick
Sent from my Pixel 2 using Tapatalk
There should be lots of ROM options shortly if not right away, since the device is Treble compatible as are other EMUI 8.0 devices.
For whatever it's worth:
I am running EMUI - but debloated with Nova installed (I couldn't imagine Android without Nova). I'm also not 100% sure what features are EMUI vs stock Oreo.
There's a "Launch" feature built in to EMUI that allows you to specify which apps are allowed to launch in the background, allowed to be launched by a secondary app, and allowed to run in the background. I like this feature, but if you don't bother setting preferences for each app, EMUI kills background apps somewhat aggressively.
EMUI lets you choose between a collapsible navbar (if rooted you can use Exposed Edge Pro instead), and/or a one-button navigation system using the fingerprint sensor - tap for 'back,' hold for 'home,' swipe for 'recents.' I am using the one-button system in conjunction with Edge Pro and to me it's pretty seamless (but I still have to work on not hitting the sensor by accident).
The dialer and SMS skins are fine. Stock DPI options are a bit high, but you can change via developer options (after every reboot). Stock camera app no longer works if you change the DPI, but you can always use opencamera (or change the DPI back).
The other day I had an issue with background music playback about 45 minutes into streaming music via an old version of eDJing premium. Issues stopped after I disabled Doze (via root app that I had set to run at boot). That's probably an Android issue?
Battery life for me is in line with what I have experienced with every similar phablet I have previously owned.
Anyways, all EMUI 8.0 devices share key things in common, so the dev community is larger than it seems.
Thanks, I appreciate the feedback. I also use Nova and will probably remove some of the reduny apps. I can see myself rooting and using Magisk.

In my opinion the emui is not bad.
The personalization of Android that Huawei made is pretty clean.
However they obviusly add some bugs:
- adaptive icons do not works correctly: you can have only the circular one (even with Nova)
- the resolution of the display or the information that the apps get are really strange: some app starts always in landscape, no matter the actual orientation, other render the pages in strange ways when the tablet in turned fron landscape to portait, etc... Really really annoying
- battery optimization is too agressive and it is not (for me) completely clear how to tune it
- every time the launcher is updated, it switch back to its stock launcher, and i have to set the nova again as default (this can be done just in the default app in the settings). Probably this will happen also for other apps.
The hardware is solid and the battery life is good.
The position of the touch sensor and of the hardware buttons are not imho right and a big design failure.
If you keep the tablet in portrait with the touch button in the buttom: the hardware buttons are almost inaccessible unless you have a prehensile bellybutton ?
In landscape if you try to change the volume with the hardware button your finger will touch the touch button and the current app is "closed" (the tablet swith back to the home screen). This is a software feature (bug?) that i will like to change
Inviato dal mio CMR-AL09 utilizzando Tapatalk
Also the Mediapad is now listed as enterprise device. I'd be surprised if they'd stop with updates soon.
As for EMUI:
It's a mixed bag for me. There are 3 annoying bugs which most likely have their origin in EMUI:
- 2 fingers at the same time without instantly moving makes the tablet not recognize the input anymore. (there is a thread on xda about it)
The other 2 are about the keyboard accessory which is probably irrelevant for you (for everybody else):
- flipping the cover from front to back triggers a "refresh", black screen on netflix or a return from edit mode to view mode in xodo pdf
- EMUI always asks if I want to start desktop mode when a keyboard is connected, doesn't matter if you tick the "don't remind me again" checkbox

Squircle works for me. I think all work. I'm not sure they work how they should. Not that I care.

This usually has to do with the apps, not EMUI. Install Rotation Control to force auto rotation across all apps.

This is probably the biggest issue with EMUI. But almost everything is tunable and with root/feedback from other EMUI users, I don't expect this to be a long term issue for anyone. (I started having issues playing music in the background without a charger plugged in - they fixed themselves last night and I'm not sure why. My preferred music player app was last updated in probably 2011, might or might not be a factor.)
every time the launcher is updated, it switch back to its stock launcher, and i have to set the nova again as default (this can be done just in the default app in the settings).

I can confirm that you do not have this issue as long as automatic updates are turned off. I have also seen a general improvement after uninstalling updates to Google Webview.
The one EMUI feature I like that I forgot to mention in my previous post, is Eye Comfort. It's a partial blue light filter that works better than any apps I've found on the Play Store.
Nope the adpative icons do not works, and this is something that you may corcern since this is one of the feature of Oreo and the app on oreo only gave icons to works as adpative. The circle one are just ugly.
Regarding the orietation, the same app works all correctly on my previous tablet and on all my other devices.
Root should not be required to solve implementation problem.
The sotck rom must be as much as posdible bug free.
For all this bug we should blame Huawei: have a look to the support fotum for nova launcher or chronus, just to understand the real situation.
As usual what it is important for someone count nothing for the others

Hi anyone on EMUI in the UK with the 10.8 Wifi version (CMR-W09). Would you please tell me what is the version you are on (Latest). As I am considering going back from Lineage for a short while as there are too many bugs just now. Stupidly I didn't note down what version of EMUI 8 I should be on and there are tonnes of them. Cheers.

SHT-W09C432B151 (8.0.0.151) is what you need
Hey there,
It's not a mixed zone for me:
1) If I wanted an Ipad I would have bought that.
2) I do not like limits in terms of app-drawer etc. (fixed this, now using Nova Pro)
3) battery optimization too heavy: hell, using the keyboard with firefox (nebo, playstore, and may more) is almost impossible as the screen brightness lowers even if automatic brightness adjustment is turned off ...
What I love is:
1) Battery live
2) How it all fits together (So the "Iphoneish feeling" that I cried about above is not my taste, but it's a consistent Design at least ...)
I bought the Mediapad mainly because of the Pen, the Hardware, and the Keyboard(if I am not hating it for ausing brightness trouble...) and these are the things that I really like!
I don't mind emui has some good features and of you use Nova you can make it look stock. I like the themes and the book cover feature. I like the battery optimisation it lasts so well.
I'm trying to get ahold of the stock firmware so I can root mine.

the tab has great features but some disadvantages (brightness bug with keyboard for me ... weird behavior at least)
Best of all certainly is the battery life! And I am using Nova ... That's why the look is not too much of an issue

I decided to replace my aging, but beloved, Nexus 7 2013 WiFi (running LineagoOS 15.0) with something a bit meatier. After much consideration, I ordered and received a 32GB M5 8.4 (SHT-W09) from Amazon UK.
First up, the hardware is awesome. I really notice the difference with the move to 4GB RAM and the updated CPU / GPU. The performance is worlds apart from the Nexus 7 - very zippy, very responsive, games run great etc. The display also is a significant improvement - I really like the 16:9 ratio too and don't agree with review feedback that it impacts eBook and web browsing. It works great for those and just looks incredible for movies and TV. No surprises so far, then, given the 5 year old spec of the N7. On the subject of this display, note that both Amazon Prime Video and Netflix now support HD playback on the SHT-W09. Absolutely brilliant. Audio is fine, I'd always listen through Bose BT OE headphones anyway. The lack of 3.5" headphone jack doesn't bother me in the least.
So, on to the OP question about EMUI. To be honest, I really don't like it. The sheer number of junk apps installed is disappointing, especially as some (YouTube, for example) cannot be uninstalled. Note that of the 32GB available, only 16GB was available out of the box. Adoptable storage has been explicitly disabled in EMUI, so there's no option to use external SD as internal storage. A bit disappointing, but a 128GB MicroSD gives plenty of storage for media, if not apps. Within the UI itself, I miss the app drawer button (I'm sure there's an option somewhere) and it all just doesn't feel "familiar" enough for my liking. The Themes idea is great, but the version delivered with the tab only seems to support local themes - there's no "Theme Store" as such, unlike the phone version of the app. As such, customisation feels limited. I've simply installed Nova and couldn't be happier with the end result.
A really worthy replacement for the king of Android tablets, the Nexus 7 2013, so I'd encourage the OP to give it a go!
@mroshaw similar for me. I replaced my Nexus 7 (2012) by the SHT-W09 and I am quite happy. I uninstalled all the apps I do not use (ebay, facebook, some games, ...) and I replaced the laucher with the Pixel-Launcher. The only parts which still remember me that I am running on EMUI are the top bar and the configuration settings, but I can live with that.
I do not regret having it bought. There are not many Android tablets out offering such a build quality and performance for such a price tag.
I am growing to like the emui. It's got some grand security features. Like others, I uninstalled a TON of apps, disabled others, then I put an AOSP P Dark theme (from here on xda). The theme takes care of the notifications bar icons - I didn't really like the emui ones - plus "stock-ifies" most of the UI.
@mroshaw To activate the app drawer button, go to Settings, Display, Home Secreen Stlye, choose Drawer.
To enable SD card storage, Settings, Storage, Default Location. I have 45GBs out of the internal 64GB once I adb uninstalled bloat.
The deal breaker for me with EMUI is the missing option to plug in the tablet via USB and mount its storage to be visible and usable with any files operation (I use Linux only). There is no HiSuite for Linux and doing everything via adb is just a pain in the neck.
Having said that, the alternative is Lineage OS as the currently only alternative ROM, but this breaks two other things which are a deal breaker as well: No Bluetooth connectivity (its just dosn't pair anything properly), so no BT audio, which sucks when there is no headphone jack. Plus, with a custom ROM you lose L1 security in widevine, so no HD streaming with Netflix or Amazon video.
Fortunately, my usage for the tablet is different from my beloved N7; I mainly use it as a score reader for my piano. I wouldn't recommend it as a replacement for the N7; for that I bought the Lenovo Tab 4 Plus and it's a perfect replacement - except there are no custom ROM, But you can root it and the Lenovo UI is pretty much stock.
@DF5JT mtp works for me to access the device's internal and sdcard storage. Probably you need to configure your udev rules to identify your device correctly.
Some lag in:
scrolling lost calls and calls (very huge lag)
swipe left notifications
swipe right a menu (note application for example)
graphical glitch when exit from software and hardware battery usage
scrolling app notification menu
Most of them gone with performance mode, but none of these was in 8.1, so I reverted back.
Anyone notice these lags?
Hi,
You are not alone. I had the same problems.
Which I did was disable some Huawei system apps including the launcher after installing Nova launcher and Fluid navigation gestures.
Follow this thread for list of app, but remember to see this one for safety. Disabling apps is much safety than uninstalling them.
After doing that, the lag has been almostly gone. You will come back to Android Oreo style multitasking cards and maybe can not use the ultra power saving mode. And, with an option in Fluid now your fingerprint also works as a home button (you still can use the scan function). I choose the option to run app from lockscreen, it helps hide permanently the navigation bar (before that it takes part of second), however the lockscreen clock will be cut parly at bottom.

I used OnePlus 6T and honestly OnePlus has the best user interference. Very Clean and better than the stock Android. But when come to ColorOS the story is really different. Although I have installed Nova launcher and some near stock icon packs but the overall visuals of ColorOS Ui remain the same. I anyone has idea if the substratum or any other tool by which we can tweak the settings menu, quick settings etc.

Well, I don't think, there is any 3rd party engine which is supported with this device.
But I can see that more and more themes are being added in Oppo's Theme Store.
It's not just about more theme it's about major overhaul of the entire UI. ColorOS is always striving to be more like IOS. But the best and clean UI of Oxygen OS is far more better than ColorOS. I wish I could get an Oxygen OS rom for Oppo Reno 10X Zoom.
Well I guess we all can just wish that.
I don't think we will be able to even get a clean rom for this device anytime soon.

Oh, that's horrible. Looks like we made a mistake buying a Oppo Device
No it's not a mistake as it's a great device with so much capabilities in both hardware and software. Yes in software development OPPO has always been behind the competitors. In recent times every OEM is trying to give more stock like user experience except OPPO and VIVO which share the same roots with OnePlus i.e. BBK Electronics. Let's hope some of the developers get interest in OPPO phones and start pushing the limits.

In recent times every OEM is trying to give more stock like user experience except OPPO and VIVO which share the same roots with OnePlus i.e. BBK Electronics. Let's hope some of the developers get interest in OPPO phones and start pushing the limits.

Having an impossible bootloader unlock phone, and being a member of xda is a very Big mistake. Period.
Just have a look to the rom section of this RENO Phone, then compare it to OnePlus 7 pro rom section...
No way

Yes you are right at this point. I am using the Reno 10X and love to play games and use camera with all it's capabilities BUT honestly hate the ColorOS Skin. It was better for Oppo to borrow OxygenOS from it's sister company OnePlus (a great wish if it can come true). But have to bear this if you are in love with the device.
Thanks for sharing. I'm using the gallery app on my Pixel 3a (Google Photos is buggy atm) and it's working without any issues.
Tried Gallery App

Hey!
Few days back, I got my Reno 10x.
My past device was OnePlus 3T which just kills when it comes to Software.
I really miss the OnePlus clean apps.
Found some of the Apps working from OnePlus.

OnePlus game space app port to support on Samsung's a50s
Hi , anyone reading this if u have any idea how to port oneplus's "game space" app to Samsung a50s (android q )Please help me .. , why i need = i recently purchased OnePlus Bluetooth earphone z and i use it to play pubg ( my headphone port in device is damaged ) the sound have very high delay while playing pubg almost 1- 2 sec delay . . OnePlus says the product (Bluetooth earphone) have low latency mode which will only work for OnePlus devices only they have and finatic mode in there game space application ( similar to game launcher in Samsung) which decrease the latency in OnePlus Bluetooth earphone . , So i though that i could install the game space app in my device so that i can try to use the finatic mode to reduce the latency in OnePlus Bluetooth earphone ,
Hey, I've been using Poco X3 NFC for around 2 months now..and the refresh rate switching bugs me..when there is slight stuttering and slow animations.
Thx to XDA now through set it application, ive set it to 90hz for most of the time..but still there is some stuttering felt when u scroll the home screen of the launcher slowly..or the phone settings application..or gallery..sometimes chrome too..rest is smooth..can anyone suggest a fix? Also note that when I restart my device, then for 2 or 3 days it runs buttery smooth as.i wished it did constantly.. but after that the stuttering and slow animations appear through normal use..rest performance is fine during gaming and social media scrolling..but I don't like the dynamic Refresh rate switching..I wish it was set to permanent 90 Hz Instead of 120hz..

Sounds like you installed a lot of bloat on your phone. I would advise to search your app list for power hungry behaviour (always running in background, disabled battery optimizations, etc.) or even for suspicious and malicious spyware like Twitter and Facebook.
If you find such apps, remove them and try again. I'm sure the stuttering will vanish.

Thanks for replying..man but I checked and I don't have any add issue..and no bloatware except one cod game..Facebook or YouTube and Instagram..and I've restricted their activities..plus the ram is 6gb of which 3gb is available mostly..due to mui being a heavy ui, are u using Poco x3 as well? Man I wish there was another suggestion which I could try to make the stuttering vanish, and I think the stuttering issue is there due to dynamic Refresh rate switching..it's software issue on poco's part..waiting for more tips..here as I want to get this stuttering to vanish..

I use POCO X3 NFC surya with OctaviOS (Android 11, AOSP) with firmware version 12.0.3.0. I set static refresh rate to 120Hz and it is as smooth as butter. Have no stuttering at all. If you are interested in what exactly I did, read this comment.
P.S.: I have no Facebook, Instagram, Twitter or whatever installed.

Ahan man ?so you're using custom ROM..yes that's nice..can you share an ss here of how it looks and how's the experience compared to mui..ik it would be much more stable than this heavy skin.i don't hate mui but if I could get more smoothness then that would be amazing ..at the moment man I won't custom flash for Rom just now but maybe after several months..and updates if things do not get better I will..any tips for dynamic Refresh rate switching though man.? If I want to use the stock mui ..I'm on version 12.4 and Surya model..

I never used MIUI. I instantly flashed the custom ROM, as soon as I was allowed to. Before that, the phone was just laying around, waiting to be flashed. I have no idea what spyware this Xiaomi software has, so I refrained from using it all. That said, if you don't do extensive backups, then your data will be deleted on flash anyway, so why would I bother using the stock ROM for 7 days, just to remove it afterwards, anyway.
That said, I already heavily customized all looks, so potential screenshots wouldn't show how the custom ROM would look, instead it would only show how my personal customizations look, so no point in showing screenshots of that. Additionally, the parts that aren't customizable, like the Settings App, just looks like a stock Android 11 Settings App, I guess.
Finally, if you want to know more about OctaviOS, you can check out the thread I mentioned earlier. If you get to the first post of the thread I gave you my comment from, then there will be an explanation on OctaviOS and its feature set.

Right man..I respect that choice of yours using custom ROM..and tbh I think I'd do the same but only after some months.. I'm thinking that maybe future updates..and mui 13 next year would solve the trick..so got my fingers crossed..but when and I will flash my phone using a custom ROM..I'd definitely keep this OctaviOS in mind..thanks man
