Has anyone tried 10 bit video yet? How does the shield perform?
It works fine for me. I've played the Video in XBMC, MX Player and VLC. All of them are able to play my highest quality stuff (2GB MKV with a length of about 24 minutes) with SSA subtitles with no lag. However, in XBMC and MX Player there is noticeable corruption in the image and discoloration as well. It is worse the higher the bitrate with it being most unnoticeable with 10bit 720p video. There is a hint of it with 8bit, so much so I'm not sure if it is an optical illusion or not. For whatever reason I did not see this with VLC. I think it is because it was using software codec versus hardware codec. I'm not entirely sure because VLC would crash if I took it Auto for which Codec to use. Also the H/W+ codec in MX Player would crash no matter what video I tried to play (resolution or 8/10bit). Also XBMC would crash if I limited the codec to only Stagefright. The other Hardware Codec and Software Rendering worked just fine.
Dear trowgundam,
did you try the version v1.7.31 of MX Player Pro? It now supports natively the K1 but it isn't so stable...

Just to clarify that I'm using v1.7.31 of MX Player Pro and the colour corruption\pixelation is still present with HW+ or HW decoder used. SW decoder works fine for most purposes. I see the same problem in XBMC (latest nightly) with Hardware acceleration used.
I did find the performance suffers a little bit with the SW decoder (got a lot of dropped frames on a very high bitrate version of Psycho-Pass I was watching but everything else seemed fine, nowhere near as bad as my old Nexus 10 however which is a massive plus). The tablet gets quite hot and battery life really suffers as I'm guessing only the CPU is being utilized?
It's a damn shame because the HW decoder works fine with 10-bit video apart from this problem but it can get so bad in certain scenes that it's not really usable.
I am using MX Player on my Shield TV. One thing that totally broke the experience for me is that there is absolute no support for surround sound what so ever.
The only way to output any surround sound in MX Player is to use HW decoder. When it works, it is really great because it is the system handling all the surround sound. However, what I want to watch is encoded in hi10p so HW decoder gives me broken image.
I have tried everything but there is simply not an option to decode video through SW while decode audio through HW (Archos has it).
To make things worse, MX Player is not even able to output multichannel PCM properly while all of the other three players on Android TV has absolutely no problem with it.
I have a number of videos with the following properties. Their video frame rate is 30 at 720p with codec of H.264 part 10, using Lavf57.27.100 to encode. The audio is AAC at 48kHz..
I played these videos on different number of android devices using MX Player with HW decoding. The video is delayed by a second or two. But with HW+. things seem ok.
I played these same videos on the same android devices using BS Player. The video and the audio are perfectly in sync.
How come? Please help.
BS uses a implementation similar to HW+ as default. So, you will get the result like HW+.
In HW decoder, MX Player uses the mediaplayer implementation from android itself. MX Player's control on it is very limited.
If HW+ works fine, you may just use it. From 1.9.0 HW+ will be enabled by default for all users with android 5.0+. But, HW will be the default one as usual.
I test HW can Passthrough sound , but HW+ can't Passthrough sound...

which codec?
If you have a custom codec which supports the codec, it won't be passed through.
can you collect a bug report immediately after playing the video that has issues?
Anyhow, in the next version, we will add an option to prefer audio passthrough over internal decoders.
viedo code is x265
play video use HW no video, audio ok
HW+ video OK, audio not work!
I have the same question (problem). I'm using MX player PRO on my TV POS 9002.
When I use HW Decoder there is DD and DTS audio but 4k HEVC 10 bit HDR 23.976 DTS and DD files are stuttering.
When I use HW + Decoder 4k HEVC 10 bit 23.976 DTS and DD files are smooth but there is no 5.1 audio in my Amplituner (it doesn't see DD and DTS - only Stereo).
MX Player team... Please do something with this. No other program (KODI, SPMC, VLC, ARCHOS) can play this files smoothly. Only MX Player but only in HW + without 5.1 sound
Best regards
Today was a new MX Player update with passthrough option.
I was very happy at the beginning becouse DD started to work but... sound and video stutters every couple of seconds in almost every movie I have (but not in everyone. Some plays good I have passthrough option checked.
There is no DTS passthrough in HW+. Only in HW.
It was so close...
When I uncheck passthrough there is no 5.1 DD sound from Ampli I don't know what to do
Thank You for this but I think it needs a little more testing.
Best regards for all The Team
update MXPLAYER ,The problem is the same

MX Player checks the capability of HDMI receiver. When you select this option, If the receiver reports that they support DTS or DD, it will automatically use pass-through mode even if there is internal decoder. maybe your amplifier doesn't report the capability of the DTS decoding.
In HW decoder, there is no control on our side. It will automatically pass the audio to HDMI if it's unsupported.

can you collect a bug report from help menu immediately after reproducing the issue and share here?
it will help us to understand the actual issue.
but use HW audio ok

Hi
Thx for answer
When I play some DD movies sometimes there is audio passthrought...sometimes there isn't. I must try couple Times.
When I play in passthrough there is 80% chances that sound and video will be stuttering but...
I have a solution...I play in passthrough mode and when video and audio stutters i change sound to SW mode and for some time I uncheck SW mode. When this doesn't help I try to rewind movie to the beginning couple of Times. It usually starts to workafter couple of times.
This is my way to Play 4K HEVC 10 BIT HDR movies in DD 5.1 on my Philips POS 9002 and Pioneer VSX - 422 Amplituner.
DTS doesn't work in passthrough mode at all
It works in HW mode but video is stuttering. Video is stuttering in every Android TV player: VLC, ARCHOS, KODI, SPMC and integrated Video Player.
Thank You MX Player Devs for a great program thanks to which i can watch movies on my TV.
Best regards
wrong
Any chance getting HW+ to support passthrough audio?
Bump, so many years later and this highly popular video player stays so severely flawed to the bones for people with a proper surround sound system with DTS/Dolby support... Kodi has no issues with it all but somehow MX Player can't seem to solve their issues
2021 update
still no 5.1 sound in mx player in passthrough mode
all the options, codecs and upadates are set, but still "stereo" on reciver display
no DD, no DTS, no 5.1 and no DD Plus either

Yep and I just posted this issue not realizing that this was posted. HW+ is broken with Passthrough and they don’t even mention that it is an issue that they are working on. What a joke.

got the mx support answer:
"We regret to inform you that MX Player currently doesn't support audio-passthrough over SPDIF. However, you will be pleased to know that it's a part of our roadmap and will be supported in the future if found viable. Meanwhile, your patience is appreciated"
Hello everybody, I have this problem:
When I use hw decoder I get perfect sound but video is blurry.
When I change it to hw+ I have perfect video but no ddp or dts sound. Any solution?

Is it a local video or network stream?
HW decoder basically uses android mediaplayer API implemented on your device. If it is a network stream ( specifically HLS or DASH) it may happen due to adaptive playback. It will automatically select the best stream based on the current bandwidth. In HW+ or SW decoder, it will always play the first stream despite the bandwidth availability.
The problem occurs with local videos, mkv with ddp or dts sound. It is quite strange: Videos look like being projected on a screen with retention problem with hw. With hw+ videos are fine, but no sound
