A Complete Guide on Rooting & ROMing for Sony Xperia XZ2 - Sony Xperia XZ2 Guides, News, & Discussion

Hi,
There are only a handful of devs for the Xperia XZ2 and I'm sure all XZ2 owners appreciate them for their hard work and support.
I recently bought the XZ2 considering that it is a better buy than the XZ3 for the price. Upgrading from 2014's Xperia Z2, understanding the current root and bootloader unlock situation has been difficult for me even though I'm not a noob to rooting (I know I'm not an expert but definitely not a noob).
So for the better understanding of new users, I'd like to suggest a thread with all the basic information like:
How to root without unlocking the bootloader.
Methods of rooting XZ2 and supported Android versions.
Unique issues related to unlocking the bootloader and rooting like the camera issue.
How to install stock firmware on an XZ2.
How to Install a custom ROM on XZ2.
Information about protecting the DRM keys.
Updates on Google Camera for Sony Xperia XZ2.

Yes, sad, very sad. In the past some smart guys everytime found a way, let's see. Looking forward.

Please change the thread title, it is deceiving. I thought this thread has the complete guide.
Make it like... [<Request/Help>] <title>

1st of all you cant have root with locked bl, so also you cant flash a custom rom... And the 2nd thing howto install firmware ? Well download xperifirm by @IgorEisberg and flash it with newflasher by @munjeni and yes that is possible on locked bootloader, search those threads and read then you will know howto..
The 3rd thing is::... Why you not search before opening a new thread ?

I live in Japan and have the same model. As you said its the Xperia Z3 for Japan and unfortunately it can't be unlocked and is therefore unrootable at present so there are no roms that can be loaded on it. The likelihood of finding some way to unlock it and root it are very very slim.

Really would like to root the SOL26 but still have doubts (DRM Key worries...etc.).
Again, big thanks!
I think the first link you provided is the same way in Here
and the 2nd one is how to unlock sol26 with NSCK code.
the 2nd link and the 1st one is total different.

Thanks for the encouragement. I was pretty sure the second link was an unlock key for a Docomo-brand SOL26 so was hesitant to use that key.
Correct me if I'm wrong but I think we have the same model and carrier (AU-KDDI?) :highfive:
So, you're recommending that first link root method? If I'm hearing that guy correctly he's rooting without unlocking the bootloader which sounds good to me.
Apparently I can keep my DRM keys and everything else intact by rooting that way. I'm not really interested in trying out new roms or anything (did enough of that when
I still had my HTC Desire HD ) so it seems like the best way to go. I'd be more than grateful for any more advice you can give about rooting our model and again huge
thanks for all your help. If you're ever in Kyoto I'll buy you a beer!

Yes, I've got SOL26 too
Sure, you can root without unlock bootloader (I wonder how to unlock it because that's impossible with AU-KDDI or carrier model when unlock bootloader status allow = No)
Because you do not unlock bootloader, so no harm to your DRM key.
You must follow as the guide to root because you cannot root directly with AU-KDDI firmware.
By the way, I'm not in Kyoto but in Ho Chi Minh

[Q] How to root Sony Xperia D6653 OS 4.4.4 on build 23.0.1.A.1.49?

I have searched and I cannot find a root method for the Sony Xperia Z3 (D6653) I have which is running Android OS 4.4.4 and the firmware version is 23.0.1.A.1.49 - can this specific Z3 be rooted? If anyone can point me in the right direction I would be very grateful.

Flash an insecure kernel from the development section
look for advanced stock kernel....
If you have unlocked then it is SOOOOOOo easy to root....
EDIT
Say goodbye to your DRM keys though, if you unlock before rooting you will never see them again. You may want to look in the cross device development section to see the thread about restoring DRM functionality.

Custom Roms That Don't Require Bootloader Unlock? (for Xperia L)

Hi Guys,
I'm new to this whole Android tech stuff, but recently I decided to try cyanogenmod on my Xperia L device. But the thing is that the Bootloader access is restricted by default, so I can't install it. Can you show me any Custom Roms that don't need the Bootloader to be unlocked? Or if there is a way to unlock the Bootloader, even if unlocking is not allowed on my phone?
Thank you in advance!
There is no way to install custom rom without unlocking bootloader.and yes our device(Xperia L) is unlockbale.

Which Smartphones have Unlockable Bootloader & Can be rooted?

Post amended for better notability:
According to Sir Zelendel's recommendations and this website's list of top smartphones, I have the four products to choose the refurbished/pre-used smartphones from:
Google Pixel
Samsung Galaxy
One Plus
Honor

So my next query is:
Can the earlier editions/versions of these products also have their bootloaders unlocked/re-locked and be rooted/unrooted?
The explanation behind my brief query in details:
I have assimilated what my teacher here has advised.
I decided that I will buy a 2nd hand, Out-Of-Warranty smartphone for regular use and all sorts of experimentation.
I have been perusing the forum threads. I then searched the forum threads via Google (I know how to ) for better results . Appears that I have found some encouraging posts.

The problem is that people don't leave proper information about whether their problem was solved. This creates problems for the newcomers. They dont have enough guidance.

Skimmed them. A few of them look encouraging. Will take some time to assimilate
I also found that the forum lists the following as the top SmPh:
Samsung Galaxy S9
One Plus 5T
Google Pixel 2
One Plus 5
Samsung Galaxy S8+
I assume that these mobiles can have their bootloader unlocked as well as the OS rooted?
I remember from my earlier lesson that Honor and One Plus 5T are definitely compatible with my plan to experiment.
Since these are new arrivals in the market, I might not find a 2nd hand SmPh from these said models.
So based on your vast experience, please feel free to advise me to go ahead and buy a SmPh in which I could exercise either of the two options: unlock the bootloader and root/unroot the OS.

Just a little clearification. All devices come locked when you open the box. Unlocking the bootloader and rooting it are allowed on those devices and on the One plus devices it doesnt void your warranty. Unlocking and rooting are really easy. a couple of PC commands, and one zip flash and boom you are unlocked and rooted.
Thank you, Sir.
But can those smartphones, that can easily be unrooted and their bootloaders, unlocked, be again re-rooted and bootloaders, locked, after necessary amendments, respectively?
After I have bought one of these devices I shall proceed to seek advice on how to do these.
In the meanwhile, and needless to say, I shall also search the forum posts using Google, for further info.
Thank you, Sir, for replying to the post.

Yes removing root is as simple as flashing a stock rom and then relocking the bootloader with one PC command.
If you have Firefox on PC you can use the XDA search plug in. It is far better then the built in search.

Not all devices can have an unlocked bootloader. The vast majority cant. I have never even heard of that device so I cant say for sure. But is you cant unlock the bootloader with the switch in developer settings and the PC command then you may have a device that you cant unlock the bootloader on.

Yes, Sir. In Linux it is very simple, almost a no-brainer. But I don't know why the Android programmers have made the issue complicated.

In Linux you don't really remove root access. It is still there in the system. Not so on Android due to it being turned off in the kernel and having no built in UI.

This part I don't really understand because of my lack of experience with android.
I am studying android-x86, but I am not making much of a headway.
I would really want to know as to how is it turned off in the Kernel. Which portions of the kernels are removed, or hashed/silenced.

UPDATE: Turns out they stopped doing that with Android 9 Devices (according to XDA) so this can be closed now)
I've heard that after a Bootloader Unlock the Camera Firmware is changed so the Camera is worse. Is this true and how much worse is it from a locked bootloader? Let's say locked is 100% Would unlock be 75%, 80%?

That's for phones with MediaTek chips so it's not going to work and not even worth trying.
Sony also make it extremely difficult to get the keys.
If it was possible to gain temp root we'd know all about it.
AAAAAAAAH!
Mackay53 you are right. Must have been fingertrouble, combined with a "read and understand" malfunction. I ment this link:
temp root exploit for sony XPERIA 1 and XPERIA 5 with android 10 firmware including temporal magisk setup from the exploit
The author talks about Sony Xperia 5 with Android 10, but may be it will work on a Sony Xperia 5 II with Android 10 too.
I'm sorry for posting an obviously wrong link...
