I am a captivate owner and I have nothing to complain about.
The line above is a single sentence summary of this post. If you have no interest in the opinions of others or prefer to complain about a developers hard work then you should probably stop reading now.
After the countless hours I have spent in the Samsung Captivate section I am beginning to feel there is a growing void in the area of captivate compliments. It's as if people are angered by Samsung's apparent failure to achieve perfection. A post of positivity or satisfaction with our magical devices only seems to appear amidst the rampant firings of Iphone vs Captivate battles fanboy raids.
I do not intend to claim that Samsung has achieved perfection. Through the development and production of this device we can see that some apparent flaws have been made, HOWEVER!, these flaws are not attached to every captivate experience. After initially reading through this forum I would assume I have been blessed by the phone gods for providing me with the only fully functional captivate produced. After digging for some time though, it can be seen that there are a few who have had an awesome and intended experience with this phone. I never had a problem with GPS or Battery and I couldn't even complain about lag.
Rom after rom, my opinion has grown more positive. Through research and understanding I have learned how to make my device work more effectively for me. I have learned that most errors and malfunctions are simply user error or misinformation. A good and verified Master Clear can work wonders for a properly flashed phone's performance.
To the developers out there gilding the lily daily. You are awesome! Always should you receive an error log, but never should you hear a complaint.
I will end this with some things that have been making me smile since captivate release:
1. SAMOLED
2. Speed
3. Multitasking like a MoFo (Last.FM + My Tracks + HD video recording, simultaneously)
Updating with more smile factors:
4. Sleek sturdy hardware design
5. Phone sound quality and reception
6. Device/screen size
7. 3D acceleration
+1 to this. I too love my phone, it is a learnign curve and we have so many wonderful developers working hard to make out phones better. I agree that a little bit of learning goes a long way, most of the complaints I read and problems that are experienced are caused by over enthusiastic new owners that do not go through the proper steps for clean flashing and often have bugs do to this. Too many people improperly installing ROMS, not knowing the difference between Recovery and Download mode. Mostly due to not reading enough and following the clearly outlines steps. We all make mistakes and have all been noobs, no device is perfect and I know I had to spend two weeks of constant reading to know how to properly flash my phone, use adb, and various other usefull tools. I am constantly learning about Android and the Captivate, I am happy with my device and my current setup. These aren't I-phones thank god and you have to spend time to set it up the way it works for you, depending on individual needs and preference.
I also thing we have a wonderful comunity and need to work together to make it a pleasent atmosphere for all. I am truly enjoying my phone and appreciate the hard work the developers put into this.
The compaining gets tiresome, but with a little patience and learning these are really great Android phones. If you want something to work with no need to tweek and hack then Android id probably not the device for you, imo.
Happy to say the same! (without typing it lol)

Good Post
I feel the same right now about mine. Everyone that has watched any of the hd movies I have loaded says the same...WOW...OMG...that looks awesome..
Does the endless complaining and *****ing do any good..Yes..it does..and while you are quite right in saying this is a great phone..please don't try to silence those who do complain about theirs..they have every right to do so,provided what they are saying is truthfull.
I know many have a hardon for Samsung because of the GPS issue..and also the 3-button recovery fiasco..and people should be made aware of them prior to buying so they can do as I did and get one that works..but..with out all of those B&M'ng threads I most likely would have not known about it..so IMHO they do serve a purpose.
On the good side..I love how fast this phone is,and how great it works..I'll be (hopefully ) even happy when 2.2 or Gingerbread is released..I do recommend them to my friends wanting to get one..and let them know to come here and sign up so they too can learn all about them and all of the great developers work on all of the phones ..This is a great place..with lots of good people working hard to make things even better for us..

It is a great phone. My friends marvel at my resolution and then bend their heads and text on theirs.
Since rooting I feel freer. Ahhh.

I do not intend to silence those with complaints about their device or experiences. I myself have listed my concerns with the device here on XDA. It is a crucial part of how our community gains understanding and shares information. I just think the overwhelming count of negative to positive posts can be frightening to a newcomer or perspective android convert. I don't want to silence the negative but encourage the positive.
The above being said, some refrain should be practiced when posting to a developers thread. I am no developer but I think some people have a tendency to be more critical than helpful when complaining about freely developed and distributed software.
Otherwise, point taken and understood. Thanks for the contribution.
I absolutely love this phone. The GPS is abysmal, the Facebook app is in severe need of an update and the lack of convenient stable visual voicemail, but beyond that the phone is awesome.
I love swype and the amount of apps and I seem to be constantly blown away by the screen. Also, the battery life is great compared to my 3g.
I was skeptical at first but I'm glad I dove in.
Well.. I do not have this phone.. But, I actually 100% understand what you mean..
The best example I can think of is a PC.
When you buy a pc, what is the first thing most (even remotely knowledgable) users do with it?
Install a few programs. I always use ccleaner, to get clear out extra files, you delete the "extra" programs you don't want (if you didn't build the pc yourself). You make quite a few changes as soon as you get it.
If your going to get a phone.. and really want to get the most out of it.. your going to have to mod it.. That means Jailbreaking it on iphone, Rooting it on android and voiding your warranty eveywhere.
If your squeamish about voiding your warranty and just want a phone for email/internet browsing.. The iphone 4 is a great choice and you are welcome to use it, Actually so is blackberry, Symbian, and a slew of other phone's.
The truth is complaints shouldn't be addressed to the phone.. but, more the respective manufacturers and carriers that prevent rooting and void your warranty for doing so.
If you know what your buying, I can't feel bad when you come back and complain... If you don't know what your buying, I can't feel bad for you at all.. Why? if your going to get the most out of *ANYTHING* in life your going to have to know what your getting into and be fully aware of your actions.. Those who aren't, I can't pity.
With that said.. I'm not saying people shouldn't strive to push manufacturers to fix problems, and being able to read warnings is nice before you buy something.. My biggest problem when I read complaints is, people don't feel the need to warn, express this dislike or try to address their problems..
They want to just run in cry, whine, and then blast the phone as if it killed their children, ate their dog and laughed in their face.
if I could persuade my parents to cover the data plan.. (not happening, they wouldn't even let me pay for it).. Then I'd spring for capt full cash right now..
Loving this thread . . . not really as much as I love persistent positivity and gratuitous kindness in general, but almost as much as I love my endearingly imperfect Captivate.
Nice work, '84. I'm gonna go ahead and assume that you're way too nice a guy to have bludgeoned to death and buried 83 to earn that nickname.

People ask me about my phone(captivate), and if they should get an iphone or captivate. Simple answer, if your a simple person, and don't like customizing or if your not really tech savvy, then get an iphone. But if you're the complete opposite, then go with an android (this is of course not involving jail breaking)

They have every right to complain, sure. But does that mean we have to be audience to these continually barrages of people who don't realize they have the choice to get rid of the phone if it doesn't suit them? I understand that we can have concerns, but if they're not handled constructively (ie varying, gps, lag, battery) they're cries should fall on deaf ears because I frankly don't need to hear it. Its been rehashed too many times to merit new threads and is far from necessary.
I come to this forum to get help with minor issues or improvement of my phone which is one I already love over my old 9700. That is why I love reading these kinds of threads where someone instead of injecting negativity into the community is seeking to shine a positive light. So here's to threads that offer help or new ways to improve the experience. Thanks OP glad you're enjoying your phone!

Most people are pleasant and inviting in person then go to the internet to become complete troll nobs. I prefer to be an a repulsive ass in person and make people on the internet believe I am a nice and well adjusted individual. This process makes life more spontaneous and brings a since of humor to Online Dating.
In truth though, it is an engine reference for a "1984 Harley Davidson Shovelhead".
I love my phone. I love it more now that i have angry birds. Would like inter-op words with friends, but there are alternatives. I do wish the "issue" that people complain about gets fixed, but it doesn't bother me. I would barely use it anyway. To much like a leash to me. Did I mention I love my phone.

I love my captivate. I admit to being a bit obsessed with it. I had GPS issues, but that was the ONLY thing I didn't like about the phone. I was hesitant to exchange it because I didn't want to end up with a different set of problems, but I did exchange it.
Now I love my Captivate AND I have a working GPS I use every day

Well, welcome to XDA and to your new mobile experience. Back in my WinMo days I spents weeks reading the Kaiser forums before my first few posts. All the new acronyms and software references can be a bit daunting, even for the savviest of geeks. Luckily I made a smooth transfer by running android ports on my winmo device before fully jumping in.

The annoying stab by the general uninformed public is an assumption that "Droid" is the correct term to reference all android devices. I blame Verizon and their conniving marketing department. The failed recognition of your device by a passing stranger does give you an opportunity to politely correct them with a showing of the wondrous features your technologically superior device is capable of.
I am going to purchase a tablet ASAP. I have been waiting and looking for something to come out that is just the one, but that has not come. I waited forever for the Xoom but the price is staggering in my opinion. I have come back to the Viewsonic G Tablet for the reason that it is pretty fast and thanks to you guys the rooting seems to make it show its muscles. That being said I would like to know that this is a good purchase and that I am not making a mistake. I also would like to know about the rooting and which one works the best for this unit. Also, after being rooted how hard is it to update the system. I am a noob at these units so please understand I am just searching for answers. Oh, and can you run torrent programs on tablets?
Thanks
I guess really what you need to do is make a list of available tablets. Then base the decision on the best price point via hardware/support. I think one of the main things that makes the G-tablet shine is XDA and its developers. But as in all electronic inevitability, its only good as the people behind it. I got my G-Tablet because it was going to be one of the cheapest tablets out there, its what I could afford. Are there better ones out there, well yes and no just depends on what your going to be doing with it. Know the devices faults. Don't listen to reviews, most will give you a half-ass answers, play with the device in person if you can. Thats all I can really help with, do research make sure you get the most bang for the buck. And above all else, good luck and I hope you enjoy your future purchase, it's your decision

The only real issues I have with my GTAB is the viewing angles since I like to stream Neflix and Hulu and the sort via "Playon". It's not so good unless you have it facing you near direct
Also, the PDMI port is only for use with a dock (until someone puts out a PDMI to HDMI cable).
The great things about the GTAB is the hardware, this thing is virtually unbrickable. Believe me I have bricked it and was able to bring it back from the cold dark black screen that makes you think this thing is a goner!!
Performance is TOP NOTCH, Aside from some glitches with the custom roms its very responsive. And thanks to the Fantastic Dev-Nation we have here at XDA this thing has gotten a lot of love!
Battery life is amazing, I get 12+ hrs of use even after watching three 2 hour movies back to back to back!.
Torrents are supported, I have used "tTorrent Lite" to aquire a few things though as with most torrents speed is questionable and even more so with the tablet.
Rooting this device is very easy, "z4Root" will do it in a tap.. (Litterally)
ROM? I use VEGAn 5.1 Beta (without the 5.1.1 supplement patch)
Others here like, TnT Lite, and there are variants of CM7 floating around. Some are Officially supported and others are not.
The GTAB can be a Fantastic device provided you are willing to make the effort it takes to transform it from "Out of the Box CRAP" to the magnificant device it was meant be.
So unless you have issues with viewing angles (as many do), can aquire a dock to stream AV to an output of your choice, are frightfull of modding, then perhaps this device is not for you.
Hey I really appreciate the posts. I am not afraid to mod the device at all, as a matter of fact I find that half the reason for getting this tablet. It is going to be for fun so I am looking forward to learning more. I feel that technology is something I am always chasing and pushing into areas like this helps to keep me young in this area. I think this solves my issue and I will get my unit ordered today. I still have the question of a torrent program. That is something I heard you can do with Android.
Thanks again guys for the helpfull posts. I appreciate it very much.
DVDFab
I've said this before on another thread but if you plan on purchasing the DVDFab software with all the bells and whistles do a google search for tarzan media. I've bought it from them for less than $40 with free lifetime upgrades.
It is by far the easiest, most flexible dvd ripping/converting app I've ever used.
Edit: posted on wrong thread somehow... Sorry.
Being that you have brought up ripping......are you ripping and burning to dvd from a tablet, or what? This is a new thought being that I was not aware of an external burner plugging into the unit. Please fill me in on this or did I just misunderstand.
thanks
What if i said you could get the GTab for $300 shipped?
I was also going to wait and see how that Tablet Market plays out.
Then I heard about and posted this: Available from SearsOutlet for $279

Oops, somehow my post got in the wrong thread. But, since you asked...
No, I am not using my gTab for ripping or burning; just viewing.
I ordered mine today. I took the advice of a member and bought a used/like new in original packaging for 327. I thought that was a good price. I will be researching the ROM loading now while I wait. If any of you guys have good easy instructions or tips please feel free to post or PM me.

Hi everyone,
I have an opportunity to buy an HP Touchpad for quite cheap (about $100 for a 16GB wifi) but after doing some research it kind of looks like WebOS is dying. I've had a hard time even tracking down an ereader app, and the only one I've found looks a bit questionable in terms of tablet-optimization. It would be great if I could just install Android on it, but it doesn't look like that's possible. So, basically what I'm wondering is whether WebOS–particularly as a tablet platform–is likely to grow and improve very much, or is it really as dead-in-the-water as it looks? I know you guys might be a bit biased, but I figure you also have much better knowledge of the OS than I do .

Just check this and tell me by yourself if the tablet is dead... http://forum.xda-developers.com/showthread.php?t=1202444
Also you can check at precentral Forum at Touchpad section and you will find everything about the HP Touchpad overthere.
WebOS has the full support of HP.
dont listen to the haters out there, remember when android first came out.
Everyone said "they will never make it, apple has the market locked up" and now look @ the market share android controls. Remember that the TP, VEER and Pre3 are first gen HP WebOS devices. Palm is gone along with the hardware. The WebOS ecosystem will be a major player in the enterprise market and consumer as well.
Unlike WP7, HP makes hardware and that is a huge advantage imop. android is everywhere, but the experience varies by manufacture. HP is creating a family of WebOS products that all have the same great experience and the will talk to each other. I dream of the day when my WebOS refridgerator that is synced with my phone will allow me to answer a call, order pizza, alert me of a text or email and all kinds of things. i know it sounds crazy, but electronics, appliances and cars all synced in one ecosystem would rule!

Man, I feel for you... it's not often someone has the Cajones to show up on a forum days later and say "bow, was I wrong"....
Honestly, I just used my first WebOS device days ago. Not a Touchpad, an original PRE... I can see why it failed.... and why it had promise. The device was neat, but too quirky. I got it set up and working for a friend, and actually usable thanks to the folks over at webos internals...
Now, as far as HP's closing of the WebOS unit.. and their promise to monetize it.... In the current mobile tech climate, it's BLATANTLY OBVIOUS why they did this.
They JUST realized that WebOS/Palm is worth more as a patent portfolio than as any actual production. Expect one of two outcomes shortly:
1) Lawsuits...
or
2) Portfolio Bidding War...
Both strategies are going to earn HP enormously more shareholder value than continuing to struggle along. Though, I hear echos of Monty Python's "'Tis but a Flesh Wound" and "I'm not dead yet!" in the distance. Good lord, look how long it took Amiga or OS/2 to die.
if i was a dying phone company (looking at you Nokia!!) i'd seriously consider buying WebOS....a truly unique system

i know but if it wants a good system of its own rather than suckering up to microsoft as it has, then this is a good opportunity, since it's abandoned a really good system like Meego aswell
I think Nokia is dead in the water. They are not that great with updating OSes.
Take symbian for example. Nokia taking up WebOS would be like tying 2 anchors together.
LOL, reading this thread makes me giggle. It's funny how people are saying webOS is alive and kicking and then all of a sudden HP throws it away.
Very unexpected and tragic. But with android and iOS dominating everything, it was a matter of time.
I wouldn't take HP's action today as a referendum on WebOS. As a matter of fact, WebOS is the one thing that they are holding on to. What they are dropping is their entire consumer product line. That's all tablets, desktops, and laptops. They sold half a billion dollars worth of product in that division last year, but the margins are too small and the risk is high with so much competition. This is about much more than lackluster sales for WebOS products (which haven't even been on the market for six months).
The question is, if HP's not building WebOS hardware, who is?

Not a snowball's chance. None of the carriers wanted it, that's why only Orange in the UK offered it.
All of the US carriers smelled bad news earlier this year; Sprint publicly announced that they were done with webOS. Verizon, TMobile and ATT didn't even bother to make a statement.
As a 15 yr Palm fanatic, it's a sad end to Palm. Wonder what we'll see next from Jeff Hawkins and team? He did lead the design of the first iPad back in 1989, manufactured by Samsung and sold as the GRiDPad.
mourning Touchpad demise
i bought a touchpad 13 days ago from staples. 32gb for $399! it was a steal. I wasn't sure about keeping it or not but the more i read, the more i believed that HP would see this project (webOS) out to success, that they would continue to develop an amazing operating system. but after today's news it was a no brainer not to keep my TP. Luckily Staples offers a 14 day return policy so i returned that sucker post haste! im still pretty peeved though, in those 13 days i really came to love webOS. oh well this is what i get for turning my back on android. any good suggestions for android tablets?
Hp is dropping webos, but it should be possible to get android running on the touchpad via the same methods they got ubuntu running on it. What would be better would be webos on my dinc2 but alas...

I was just wondering that myself.. let's hope the support continues for years to come. I have no plans to upgrade. Love my PH-1
I would not count on continued support for very long. You can’t hardly get decent long term support from phone companies that stay in business...
Sad day really. Especially the cancellation of the phone. I really believed the second one was going to get it right. I only had two problems with the phone: Low light performance of the cameras and poor signal strength (mostly indoors)
I don't think it would have been hard to improve in those areas for their next phone. He is giving up to easy.
P.S. won't be buying their other products if this is how it's going to go.
Maybe we need a petition started to give him more confidence.
It is sad, the Essential Phone had such promise. But sometimes in business "Promises" won't pay the staff or the bills. I was looking forward to PH-2, but now I am, I can't believe I am saying this, looking at the iPhone X.
I have use Android phones ,Nexis< from the beginning. Nexus left us in favor of the extremely expensive and hamstrung Pixel, I was really hoping Essential would fill that void, the one thing is the universe is constant "Apple" seems to always keep thing consistent.
Damn I need to call my therapist, its just a fuc____g phone...
Oh no. That's bad news. What a beautiful phone and not being continued.
First my wonderful Lumia, now the Essential.... Sometimes you wonder what it takes to break into this market.

I have the Essential and iPhone X. When it comes to size I constantly confuse the two of them. The Essential phone was the first Android device that felt like Apple quality to me. Can’t go wrong with either one.

Don't buy a OnePlus 6 please...
Jk
Bummed on this one for sure. I've been impressed enough with this phone and especially the support to have considered replacing my wife's aging Nexus 5X with the second generation one (assuming the camera was better than the ph-1).
this feels exactly like what happened to me when Google sold Motorola soon after I bought my 2013 Moto X, which is still my all time fav phone. Google was supporting it (we got KitKat FAST) and then BAM the support was yanked out when the company got sold. I was starting to like this phone almost as much.

Rumors.
From Andy:
"We always have multiple products in development at the same time and we embrace canceling some in favor of the ones we think will be bigger hits. We are putting all of our efforts towards our future, game-changing products, which include mobile and home products."
Where does that say the company is closing or that PH-2 is dead?

Any time Apple users have issues I laugh. I always view them as though they're in a league of their own, like they're "elite" and better than everyone. When half of their OS is buggy, you'll still have people defending Apple as though nothing is wrong.

Nah, its not that. They simply don't have any expectations, because icrap isn't technology for productivity, its fashion accessory. So as long as it is fashionable among TWITS, then its all good.
Is this thread just to take the heat off of Google for releasing a lazy/broken OS? Either way, I can assure you from the 100+ bug fix changelog that Android 12 is in a worse situation than IOS ever has been.
not sure a thread on an internet forum takes the heat off a multi billion pound company
Personally ive not had one issue with the pro 6 or android 12. Considering how many have been sold and the tiny percentage pf people complaining on here, most of which is idiots throwing their toys out the pram, im not sure id agree with the "lazy/broken OS" statement either.

Yeah, I suppose it's each person's perspective and how they use their device. I have used every version of Android, and this has had the most issues I have experienced. Even keeping a steady mobile connection has been a problem for my device. Problems from background apps just playing out of nowhere (YouTube), to alarm clocks not silencing without a force close. It's not been great in my opinion. I'm glad you haven't experienced any of that though.
Also, I don't believe it is fair to call those complaining idiots. Obviously there are some real problems with the software by looking at the fixes they had to issue. Truth be told, it's probably just a small percentage so far that they tackled.

My pet peeve is Android copying iOS and becoming more restrictive and closed in the name of security and privacy while iOS is slowly opening up to advanced users.

Definitely! It seems "Material You" is really just pushing what they like on you. Aside from that, Google has done a great job at making developer's lives miserable when trying to compile from source from these newer devices. I just don't like the path they are going down to be honest. I would stick with Android 10 forever if it was possible.

Apple just released a lazy/broken OS, and it's still very incomplete compared to Android 12. I wouldn't consider it a worse situation at all.

Alright, think what you will. I'm sure Google broke some kinda record with all of the required bugfixes today though. It is being pushed on those that want the phone however, as you can't downgrade to a more stable OS.
It's interesting that some of you guys lash out when someone doesn't agree with you though. I'm stating my opinion on the OS, and FACTS regarding the buggy android 12 (proven by today's update). So instead of being intelegent and retorting with facts or even your own opinion, you guys call people "idiots" and "misinformed". It seems like this thread is going to continue to be childish, so I'm out. Enjoy the finger pointing and scapegoating with Apple. Take care man.
I'm curious. Why is this thread here? Can we focus on the device this forum is about and not about problems other devices are having. It comes off a little petty and a lot off topic.
Apple has its fair share of major issues. I have an iPad and had an iPhone years ago and they always had their fair share of annoying bugs. Don't act as if pixel issues are unique.
I don't know why, but this thread makes want to take a seat, relax, and eat some popcorn

This thread is here because of the ridiculous complaints people keep posting countless threads on and I'm showing that Google isn't the only one that has had issues at release yet seem to be getting picked on the hardest. Not petty at all.

You posting that other phones have issues won't fix the issues people are having.
This is actually really good at pointing out how childish people are when they need to defend their favorite brand or company (that surprise doesn't give two squirts about you).
Wow devices have issues. Water is wet. If I wanted to talk about what is wrong with apple or a Sammy device I would go to a forum for that. Pretty sure the name says pixel 6 at the top of this sub. Jeez what is this reddit? Grow up.
Edit: Also did you you say "getting picked on". Seriously? Did you birth a P6P from your loins? Get over this product idolatry.

Maybe I should have specified kernel development relating to custom kernels for ROMs. It's discussed more here:
[KERNEL] [blu_spark r131] [A13 Jun 2023]
Kernel features: Build with custom upstream LLVM 14.x (Clang 14.0.6 + LLD linker + IAS) ThinLTO full -O2 build with device and target flags enhanced, build improvements and compiler fixes, etc Less is more: stockish kernel+modules+dtb builds...
forum.xda-developers.com
That's awesome that you have it compiled though. Have you noticed any improvements over stock so far?

It's childish to complain over and over about something that will inevitably be fixed. If you don't like the subject matter of this thread then hop off.

Some you assume and hope will be fixed. Nevermind you're applying that flawed logic with a wide brush across anyone having a problem.
Gotta love it though. Oh you shouldnt complain about the issues you are having with the phone you spent your own money on, because there are phones that you don't even own that are having problems. Well when you put it that way it makes so much sense lol.
This is a lot of whataboutism all because people value being a fanboy over being helpful in a community meant to, well be helpful.
But don't be mad at my comments. There is probably someone somewhere else being a Debby Downer about some other beloved product. After all that's the logic here.
