Issue with Swipe fingerprint for Notification - Google Pixel 3 Questions & Answers

After December update I am facing this issue where most of the time swipe down on fingerprint for Notification gesture isnt working as it should be. The vibration feels same as when fingerprint is not verified on lockscreen while swiping on the sensor for notification area to come down. I tried turning off all the security and again setup it all with no success issue is still there.
Am I the only one with this issue or are there people having same issue and have noticed it?

I had a similar issue before the Dec update and ended up disabling that feature. It was too inconsistent, sometimes worked but often not. Fingerprint scanning mostly works fine, better than the notification swipe, but sometimes I have to try 2 or 3 times for it to register. I attribute that to my finger being dry, but who knows.

Swipe down to access notifications on the Pixel 3 has been hit or miss since day 1. It's not a feature I use much either way, but when I do, it's a 50% chance of success on the first try. You have to be very intentional about your swipe. Starting from the very top edge and swiping straight down to the bottom edge - not too quickly and not too slowly.

This is not I was talking about.. I use this feature a lot and its 100% go for me everytime but after december update the swipe is taken as if I am using fingerprint to unlock an already unlocked device(feels due to vibration pattern) I have removed every lock and now the swipe seems good again.

how to improve fingerprint scanner?

This fingerprint scanner is driving me nuts. I registered my thumb 3 times and it still takes a billion swipes to recognize it. It either says swipe slower or that I didn't swipe the entire scanner. Besides that I love the phone
Anyone???
It's a learning curve. Eventually it'll be 2nd nature, if you stick with it.
Nice feature but like you I got annoyed with it and decided I'd use a different lock lol.
I think I got it now. Just gotta swipe a little slower
when registering swipe as fast as u can for it to accept..

Then u ll be able to swipe fast when opening... plus your finger will remember eventually how the scanner accepts it.

I'm experiencing a pretty random success rate with the fingerprint lock. Sometimes it works well, other times, it just doesn't work. One thing I noticed is that when my hands are really dry, it doesn't work well at all.
When registering the fingerprint for the first time make sure to do so from multiple different angles. For excample on a slight diagonal then just straight down every time as that way it can recognise the fingerprint so much better when you actually use it. After i registered it like that i only seldom get issues now.
It's rather annoying that it never actually says to do that and the way i found it out was watching the little excample picture it shows you when you register one.
Then you might not have done it right.
You need to hold the phone in the way that you will be scanning and you need to scan it all different ways.
I have both of my pointing fingers scan in and i have never had a problem getting it to read either finger. I use it just about everyday.
I scan my fingers in all different ways. Sideways, up and down, the edge of my fingers , all different ways i could think of.
Also make sure your swiping from the bottom of the lcd down.

What is the most missed feature, compared to past Pixels?

For me, it'll have to be the notification LED I really miss that. Had different colours for different apps and even people, so I knew who or what it was without even picking up my phone to check.
I also miss the fingerprint sensor on all the banking apps etc but that'll be resolved in due course once the developers switch to the biometric API for Face Unlock.
What is it for you?

+ 1 on everything you have statted.
I have not yet purchased the Pixel 4 xl
And dont know if I will
Definitely rather have a LED light than AOD for sure.
Only the original quality photos and videos backup but not really. I'm actually using my 100GB Google One storage which I hardly touched. At my current rate of 1GB per 12 days, I'll be needing more space in just under 3 years. [emoji23]

Hands down the finger print sensor. ? Unlimited Full Photo Backup as well. Wide angle selfie camera. I didn't think it was a huge deal on the 3 but I ended up using it quite a bit.
For sure LED notification and fingerprint sensor. I like the face unlock but also want to have the choice to not use it and use a fingerprint instead. There's many times I will pull my phone out just to see the time then POOF...unlocked. Ugh! lol
(yes, I know PIN/Pattern can be used in lieu of face unlock)

There is also a setting to face unlock then go to the "lock screen" rather than all the way in. That's what I do. So tap the screen to see notifications or face unlock then swipe up.
Settings -> Display -> Lock Screen Display -> Skip Lock Screen toggle : On skips directly to last screen used (like your home screen). Turn it off and Face Unlock goes to your lock screen and you just swipe up to then go to the home screen.
nothing. I thought I'd miss the fingerprint sensor, but I don't Face unlock is so fast it would be unlocked before I could place my finger. I would like an ultra wide lens and top bezel to shrink but that was not on the older models either...just hoping those 2 are done on P5
I have a TB on Google one, so not a huge issue for me with photos. I save original quality. I had my subscription last year as well.
Autofocus for the front-cam, no doubt...
Biometric API is really bugging me and I bet we could wait a very, very long time before Devs start actually updating for it.
Nothing really. I thought I'd miss the LED, but I haven't really noticed it being gone much. The fingerprint sensor some, but mainly because a lot of my apps use it. Definitely miss the convenience of it. I'll be very happy once they start using the new API. I sort of miss the metal back of the 2xl. But, wireless charging is awesome, so it's kind of a toss up.
I DEFINITELY don't miss the notch on the 3. I didn't think it bothered me, until I got this phone. Now I can't understand how I went a full year with it...
At least for as long as only a few apps support biometric unlocking, it definitely is the fingerprint scanner. But I'm sure it's only a medium-term loss, and we'll see more apps being able to use biometric unlock very soon.

I just Installed android 10 May Update (52.1.A.2.1)

So, what the title says, I just downloaded it from xpirifirm and Installed it using flashtool, am hoping to fix the problem with voice messages from WhatsApp and messenger as well (basically 1 in 10 voice messages I send go silent in the middle of the recording), there is not a changelog from Sony but they never give any so I hope this could be more than just a security patch, I want to know if any of you have installed it and if you have noticed any fix, thanks, If I find out something I will tell you. Thanks for reading.
Well, sadly I couldn't fix the issue with the voice notes, but I disabled the "ok Google" feature from the Google assistant and I haven't had any problem with voicenotes anymore, let's see if it stays like that.
It didnt solved the problem, I plan to go back to android 9
Does not feel any fix, but so frustrating 'couse battery capability is much much worse...
I think the fingerprint at least is faster and more reliable.

I fixed the voice messages disabling the feedback tactile of 3 under screen buttons
Did the upgrade change your GPS functionality? Since the day I updated, my phone started drifting. I have 25 kilometers displacement on a day staying permanently at my home office. Compared to 0.5 kilometers before the update.
I didn't understand how you fixed the voice messages, can you be more specific?
Hey guys, it's July 9th and the last firmware released for xperia xz2 is 52.1.A.2.1, will Sony stop supporting this device or what? Btw my cellphone has now a ghost touch.

Same for me! Just about a week or so, I am annoyed by the quick settings bar being occasionally pulled from top while typing on the keyboard or working in apps. With the "Show taps" option turned on from the developer settings, I can clearly see that the device sometimes detects an extra tap (draws the corresponding circle) at the very top of the screen right after I tap somewhere else. This activates the system bar and switches the focus from the app. This only happened before with the screen very dirty or wet (i.e. in the rain). However, this time cleaning it and rebooting the system didn't help. My initial idea was that I could have damaged the screen sensors or other hardware somehow. But this might be instead a planned action to support the upcoming models' sales Interestingly, there was no software update accompanying the behaviour change — seems like there are some remotely controlled sensor options their engineers could be playing around.

Thanks for sharing your experience, well I still have the ghost touch but now occurs more often and I have had another issue since some months ago ad well and tje thing is that sometimes the proximity sensor "detects" it's being covered and makes the screen flash several times during a call or hearing voice notes in whatsap, sometimes the failure is as bad that I have to restart the phone, I don't know what could be causing this problem but I have to say that I have dropped some water in my cellphone in the past two or three times, and I don't know, maybe some of this water came into the phone through the earpiece and messed with the upper part of the screen and the other sensor up there, my phone os almost a year old now, Do you guys think it might mot be water resistant anymore? And btw, have you dropped water in the phone as well? Thanks for reading.

Possible haptics bug?

I've been experiencing a possible bug where I start getting random little haptic clicks happening by themselves. The clicks are pretty much the same as what you get when you take the S pen out of its slot or tap a nav bar button.
Basically the phone will behave fine for hours and then all of a sudden these haptic clicks start happening here and there while I'm using the device, but are not related to anything I'm doing at the time. So for example I could be turning the volume up or pulling down the notification shade and a second later I'll get a random click or two. It then keeps on happening intermittently as I interact with the phone. A restart fixes the issue every time - at least for a few hours - which makes me think it's a software bug of some kind.
Anything else noticed this? I'm using an unlocked UK Exynos version SM-N986B.
I am noticing the same thing and it is driving me nuts. ? It's constant haptic click like when the spen is removed and I can't figure out what it causing it. I have a Verizon US version. I seem to notice it when I have a case on it. Using the ESR case with the kickstand.

Good to know I'm not alone. Interesting that this issue can affect the Snapdragon and Exynos versions. I'll look into your theory about the case. I'm using a Ringke Fusion, but next time the clicks happen I'll take it off to see if that makes a difference.
Otherwise I guess this is just one of those little bugs you always get when you're one of the first to buy a newly released device. I'm sure they'll fix this in a future update.
I'be been using mine since last Thursday with an Otterbox case and have not had that issue, mine is an unlocked variant from the Samsung store.
Go to Settings > Display > Edge Screen > Edge Panels > Handle Settings (3 dots) > at the bottom, turn off Vibrate when handle is touched
or
Go to Settings > Sounds and vibration > System sound/vibration control > turn off Touch interactions or other options

That sounds like a strange bug. I have the N20U 512GB unlocked US version from the Samsung store and have been using it for 3 days now and haven't had that issue.
When you say "click" do you mean like a random screen press or a small vibration?

Small vibration. Like when you pull out the spen. It comes and goes. Hasn't done it for the last 4 to 5 hours and then all of the sudden it's starts doing it again. I may do a factory reset as I am having multiple issues from the spen intermittently not working, horrible studder when scrolling with the 120hz turned on, sub par photos that are washed out and blurred, and atrocious battery life. Maybe I got a complete dud.
So I ended up reformatting the phone and chose not to do a restore but download everything manually including the settings and apps. The odd haptic feedback click is gone as well as some of the other issues so far.

Ahh the old restoration bug striked again. The only things I restore are media/photos, messages and contacts. Great to hears the problem wasn't too serious.
Getting the same thing on Galaxy S20 ultra. I noticed that it all started after the update i got on the 21st
it feels like the side panel compass
when u have the bug again just tilt your phone a little and check the panel if its the compass

I also thought the compass could be the cause of this - like maybe it was still clicking on the 0° mark even when the side panel was closed - but so far I haven't been able to confirm that as the cause as it doesn't do it on cue.
In fact the last time I experienced the haptics bug I was editing the button order on the pull down quick panel, but I wasn't able to reproduce it this way a second time so it just feels like it happens at random times. And now suddenly for the last two days it hasn't happened at all, but I don't know if that's down to anything that I have done or a setting I changed
For me the jury's still out on this one.
I just had it start today! So annoying. I have no idea what it is. I do have the compass edge panel. I'll look out for that.
Snapdragon unlocked model here.
I just got the phone and I noticed the same thing. I did use the cable to transfer everything to the new phone. Nothing I tried worked until I factory rested it and manually installed my apps. I did notice that if I shake the phone it will do the haptic click a second after I stop shaking it. It seems to be coming from the bottom camera lens.
i removed the tools panel from my edge panel and couldnt reproduce this haptic bug again...
I am also having this problem too. Can't pinpoint what reproduces it yet.

There is no vibrate setting in Handle settings on mine. If you have that, then please post a screen shot.
Make sure you have auto restart turned on everyday. I haven't noticed any problems with my verizon branded 128gb white

Question Bug with proximity sensor

Hi guys,
It often happens to me that screens shuts off when I try to click on top tier of screen, it's really annoying especially with full screen apps.
I recently put on screen protector film but I don't know if it's due to this.
Anyone has this problem ?
Many thanks.
Are you rooted and using [MOD][Xposed+Magisk][Pre-Release] AOSP Mods - System modifications for AOSP-based Android 12+'s option to double-tap the status bar to sleep? If so, it might be related to that setting. I was trying to reproduce a different bug, playing a full-screen landscape YouTube video and I found almost every time I tried to make the status bar appear and then drag it down, I accidentally shut the screen off.
Luckily for me, I rarely try to do something like that while in a full-screen landscape app, so I'm keeping that setting on.
If you're not rooted or not using that Magisk Module, then ignore this.
I'm not.
It happens even whith WhatsApp when I select a message in a conversation and try to click on delete icon located in top screen, screen shuts off.
Where is the promixity sensor ?

I'm not really sure. I just unlocked my P7P and ran my finger across the status bar, back and forth and I never found it.

I have the same problem. TMobile Visual Voicemail has its delete button just below and to the right of the front camera and the screen turns off before I can delete the playing voicemail. I have to go back to the full list of voicemails and delete from there.
