Some BT headsets (typically in car built in systems) have 1-2 second delays from when audio is sent from phone to BT receiver to actual playback. This causes Google Assistant to turn on the mic to listen before the speech is completed. In some cases, the app would time out waiting for a response before the speech is done being read out. Typically when you use Google Assistant to dictate a text message to someone.
Anyone have ideas on how we can customize Google Assistant's wait timer to deal with this kind of delay? Preferably on a per BT device level.
Nobody owns a car and uses Google Assistant in it?
I have a Hyundai Ioniq w/ Android Auto and also have similar Bluetooth lag. I think this is an issue with the (most likely) poor quality BT that cars implement. I've always had several seconds of lag when using bluetooth in a car system. It's never been so bad that it will prematurely cancel voice requests, though.
AFAIK, I don't think there's a specific software option (officially) to account for this bluetooth lag. I'd think the only solution would be to get an ApTX Low Latency-certified bluetooth connector for your car? Might be worth a shot. The Pixel 3 supports it.
I found that it affects cars that uses BT implementation from Johnson controls - Hyundai, Mazda, Honda, Toyota, GM are those I know of at this point. Doesn't seem to impact newer iDrive 6 based BMWs since they have a passthrough button that triggers the assistant directly.

If you set the phone to not use BT to record audio, move the phone closer to the center away from speakers (assuming you don't have it on full blast loudness) it won't catch the last half a second of delayed audio.
Still not as good as the built in system like on the BMW or my friend's MB. Audi that comes with Android Auto support works beautifully.

Not exactly, but in my opinion WP's Bluetooth software is just horrible.
It has two options - on and off. You can't change your phones BT name, you can't be invisible with bluetooh on, you can't transfer files. My sister can't sync her WP with her car, whereas I (on Android) just turn BT on and it syncs instantly.
I hoped Mango would fix that, but it didn't. It's just crap.
bluetooth isn't the best part of wp7 for sure...but it sync easy with an headset or a car stereo...
reading some threads about it i found that samsung devices have the worst wp7 BT hadware...
still, i'm alright to say that files transfers should be enabled

I only use Bluetooth in my cars and all my previous phones worked perfectly (iPhone, iPhone3G, iPhone4, Lg Quantum, Samsung Focus).
The HTC Titan on the other hand sucks. My two vehicles handle things different.
The Challenger (factory BT) will hold onto the call even if the car is off and the door open. The call will switch back to my old phones when out of range (basically in the house) or i manually shut off bluetooth.
The Jeep (aftermarket radio) once you open the door with the car off the call goes back to the phone.
The Titan has a problem were 1/2 of the time when the call is transferred back to the phone either manually, because the car turned off, or im out of range. The mic will not engage. I can hear the person but they cannot hear me.
Haven't had a problem with my Trophy... previous car was a Lexus IS220d and it synced and worked fine.
Currently driving a Jeep Wrangler and only once I've had the "searching for device" issue.
Bluetooth on Wp7 is quite poor. You can not select, which service an adapter shall support (handsfree and A2DP). It always use both services.
Windows Phone's Bluetooth support is abysmal, but you know what's worse: Samsung's support for Bluetooth on Windows Phone. Their last firmware update for the AT&T-branded Samsung Focus reduced out-of-call Bluetooth volume so that it's way too soft and text-to-speech is impossible to use because you can't hear it. If you turn up your Bluetooth headset or car volume to compensate, then in-call volume is way too loud. There is no fix or solution, except to restore the old firmware through Zune's backup. I've been running 2103.11.3.3 instead of 2103.11.8.1 for about 5 months now. I couldn't be more furious about Samsung and AT&T's lack of urgency to fix, or even acknowledge this. I'd even deal with the disappearing keyboard (as I have anyway) if it means keeping Bluetooth working. Regardless, after this experience I will never buy a Samsung phone again.
WP7 lacks rSAP, and for many of us with European cars are SOL. Wish Microsoft would listen as many of us have complained about needing rSAP.
With my iPhone I just had a kensington dock connector that charged + had an AUX out - so I got power + audio through the dock.
With Android it's clearly not nearly as easy
My car does not have native bluetooth but it WOULD be nice to take this opportunity (if it makes sense) to be able to effectively use my android phone for audio, gps nav (spoken directions) and handsfree calling (or at the very least, receiving calls)
What would be the best way to accomplish this? My AUX-in is in my center console, covered... so I could stick a bluetooth->3.5mm adapter there..
This SHOULD work for audio, GPS and hearing calls - but what about speaking on the phone? Phone might be in pocket - but even if in a holder mounted on windshield would mic be positioned properly to speak into it?
One thing i would really love is to be able to use GPS navigation while listening to radio, but I'm not sure this is possible. When using GPS I either have to ignore voice prompts or switch to AUX and be music-less or restricted to music from phone...

I have an aux port and I don't think you are going to be able to do all the things you want through the Aux port. I use the aux port with a HTC Stereo clip and that streams just music to the aux port from any bt device (I have a N7 as well). That is all the Aux port will do and all I want it to do. However saying that I also have a Parrot minikit neo which connects automatically when I have my llama profile to switch on bt when disconnecting from any wifi, which usually means home or work. Using the Parrot or anything like that, you will be able to use navi for voice prompts and answer calls at the same time.
No not ideal, but works for me. No it's not seamless, but it works bottom line. lol

I don't think there's a seamless way to accomplish what you're trying to do. I've got a 2010 Accord and use a windshield mount and AUX for music/GPS. Works well for me. I don't think there's a way to listen to the radio and GPS nav unless you're just using the N4 speakers.

The mic is located on the huge male end of the 3.5mm plug and if placed or mounted properly(somewhere near the driver's mouth), you may be able to talk clearly as well.
I don't talk on the phone while I drive, so I disabled that function and have never used it.
This item was on sale a couple of weeks ago for $20 on one of those deal sites.
Also bought a 3.5mm extension cable to plug into the aux port on the stereo.
I haven't figured out how to have the radio and GPS directions come out the same speakers either.

It mounts on the dash and has a microphone built in. It is powered (and the power cable includes an extra USB port so you can charge your phone while this thing is plugged in). I am in love with this thing, it works beautifully. I paired it once and since then, when I get in my car and push the button on this device, it automatically connects to my phone. If I'm talking on the phone or listening to music, the audio is automatically redirected to my speakers (if you're on a call and don't want it on your speakers yet, just don't push the button on the bluetooth adapter yet).
It works to control the phone too, I can push twice to go to the next song (works in google music and pandora, haven't tested others), click once to pause, hold for 2 seconds and release to pull up voice dailer.
Sound actually seems a bit improved as well compared to the AUX out on the phone. I find the AUX out volume to be extremely low, and this seems to be a bit louder, although I haven't done any actual tests to confirm.
I built a custom dock that has a charging cable built in, so I get in my car, set it on the dock, hit the bluetooth button on the adapter, and I'm listening to music and making calls. No wires to plug in, no hassle. It's great.
A couple of things I still need to test though. I haven't tried GPS while listening to music yet, so I can't confirm that functionality. I also have not tried other voice functions from the voice dialer to see if I can have it play a certain song or other voice commands.

No... its not. But if you want easy... this is the way I recommend you go.
Unless your current in-dash stereo is an expensive aftermarket unit, just replace it with a new bluetooth enabled model. They are dirt cheap now-a-days and can be had for around $100-150.
While you may save "a little" money going with some crippled add on solution, a new unit will give you all that you are after plus a USB port for charging, all in a simple, single interface. Also, with add ons you may run into ground loops issues and other nonsense (which will take more money and time to address).
just my 2¢... but I have considerable experience with a variety of add on bluetooth stuff, and if my head unit wasn't a $1500, double DIN, standalone GPS/DVD unit, I'd have yanked it and put in a cheap, new bluetooth capable unit in a heartbeat. I was talking to my brother on Christmas... he was in Starbucks getting his daily fix. Then walked out to his car where his new $150 Sony automatically picked up the conversation upon starting the engine, and I didn't miss a syllable.

I've had one of these for a month or so. It works quite well, though I have some audio/volume issues due to my aux input being a soldered hack into my old Saab's radio. Not Belkin's fault. It works well for calls, pauses Spotify when Google Gnav is announcing turns, can pause or skip songs in Spotify, etc. $30 well spent.
Though after reading this thread, I'm thinking of changing out the car radio head unit for one that has integrated Bluetooth to do away with my hack. Found a well reviewed Pioneer on Crutchfield and Amazon for around $100.

Yeah, I don't seem to have any of those volume issues, and I get now grounding feedback or anything.
A new headunit of course is the ideal solution, but I didn't want to give up my setup quite yet for that option, and right now the Belkin has treated me great.
I did test navigation while music is playing (google music app), it just lowers the volume of the music while she talks over it. Works just fine in my opinion.
Holding down the button on the Belkin brings up the voice caller, and it strictly only lets me do call commands. Anyone know how to change this so that holding the button on the bluetooth device will open a different app on my phone? Specifically, Google Now.
For those with the belkin, does it automatically connect when you get into your car?

I've been using the Jabra freeway Bluetooth speaker. Works great with excellent battery life. Auto connects when you get in car.
Here's my woe:
I want to be able to play my FM Radio (or CD, or USB stick - just any audio source I choose in my car) and hear Google Maps Navigation over my car spearkers. Currently I can do that if I listen to BT audio and listen to music from my phone.
My work phone is an Iphone 5s and it does this flawlessly because there's a checkbox option in google maps navigation settings "Play as Phone call" which allows it to work flawlessly. The Android app doesn't have that option. Why is that?
I have tried SoundAbout and it's terrible. Half the audio plays on the phone then it switches to my speakers and is terrible and skips words. As for other apps, I've tried BTmono, I've googled my fingers to nubs and tried every setting (turn off multimedia on the phone, on the car etc).
I'm wondering if I root this phone can I fix this at all? Or is there an alternative APK of maps with that option (maybe beta or something)
(Also can you get Google Now voice to go over the car audio like the iphone voice commands does natively, Google Now requires it to be in BT audio source as well.)
I also know this is not car specific because I tested it with a VW Passat with my phone and a Samsung Galaxy S5 and Motorola Droid something or another my coworker owns and it behaves the same in his car as well as mine.
This feature is absolutely frustrating and a dealbreaker for me. I'd happily just use my work phone in the car but anything on that phone is subject to FOIA from the general public. No thanks to that. I asked in another forum and they said it's because the iphone doesn't do a2dp or bluetooth audio out or whatever but that's not true, my iphone does play music over the bluetooth audio source. And I realize the iphone isn't as sophisticated, I'm android through and through, which is why this is making kittens cry blood for me.

I've come back to the forums for this exact problem you are describing. I believe it's true that for Google Maps voice prompts, the iPhone will indeed route them using HFP (hands free protocol) to mimic a phone call, so your car will lower the radio volume and let the voice prompt through. As far as I can tell Android has no such similar feature, and yes it's annoying as heck. Since Google Maps works on iOS but not on Android, I can only conclude that this is some oversight by the Android team, or perhaps some kind of hardware limitation that Google doesn't think is worth spending money on.
I'm a bit surprised that after all my internet searching, this problem hasn't made a big enough fuss to get to Google's attention.
I wish they would fix this and am surprised more people are not making a fuss about it

And this is still an issue. And when connected to my truck via bluetooth it won't give voice directions through my phones speaker either. Hard to convince someone Android is better than ios when something that works so well with an iPhone doesn't work at all with an Android. Please fix this!

2016 Ford Mustang GT with Sync 3. Android auto and bluetooth both work as expected with 0 issues (other than personally I think android auto blows monkey chunks.)

Have a 2015 Camry Hybrid and don't have an issue connecting to my Entune Audio system.
14 Grand cherokee SRT with 8.4 Uconnect and no issues at all. My iphone 7 plus wont stream smoothly to my headunit (choppy audio) but the S8+ does.
No issues connecting to the aftermarket deck in my jeep or the factory system in my 2017 work Chevy Equinox.
No problem connecting with the radio on my 2016 RAV-4.
2011 civic. No issues other then it takes a little longer to connect than my last phone, and my car no longer displays artist/track info. Hopefully it'll get fixed in an update.

Unfortunately, it won't happen. Samsung phones haven't displayed metadata on Civic stereos since the Note4. It's something about Samsung's custom Bluetooth stack when they upgraded it to Bluetooth 4.0; it doesn't offer full backwards compatibility. It will connect and play audio and even respond to controls via BT, but no metadata. And those apps that circumvent the issue by transmitting metadata in an alternate way, none of them work. We Samsung/Civic users have been fighting with this for a few years now to no avail.
And Honda doesn't put out updates for their stereos, so nothing will ever be fixed from their end. The only "solution" is to get a different stereo or a newer car. Or a new phone.
That's the worst part – every other phone works fine. iPhone, LG, Motorola, Pixel... It's just Samsung phones that don't play nice with older Honda stereos.
I am having an issue where call audio and contacts work between my T-Mobile S8 and Kia Optima EX 2012 with the Navigation/Infinity system, but no Streaming audio. There is no option on my phone for it, and I can Enable/Disable Streaming Audio on the car, pair, unpair, try different combinations, even factory reset the head unit and the Bluetooth on the head unit. Nothing so far. My car does show what's playing, but it still only plays through the phone and I can pause, skip, etc. from the car.
Anybody else had/has the same issue?

I know you posted this a while ago - but I have never had issues connecting blue tooth to my personal car (BMW X1) - I also travel heavlily and I have never had issues connecting to a variety of different rental cars, Fords, Kias, Toyota, etc.

Stock stereo in a 2014 Toyota FJ Cruiser. I have no problems connecting, streaming audio, or making phone calls. My audio streaming does play with a lot of cracks, but it still plays. I might mess with EQ settings but I haven't had a chance yet.
2015 WRX with stock stereo (no nav, non-Harmon version). Here are the seemingly random issues I have with bluetooth:
- Connects fine most of the time, but will sometimes connect and the audio will be muted and requires me to pause the track on my phone and then press play.
- Audio will cut out at times and revert to playing through the phone's speakers, but the phone will still be connected and call audio will play through the car speakers and I can still control the track next/previous with my steering wheel controls.
- Audio will not connect sometimes when my wife is in the car wearing her FitBit, even with my phone's auto discovery turned off and nearby devices turned off.
- Track info sometimes gets stuck on the currently playing track and will not change until the car is turned off, the app is closed and process killed, and connection is made again.
Like I said, these issues appear to be random and seem to get worse when someone else is in the car with me or when I'm wearing an Android Wear watch. I've played with every connection setting I can in my phone but I'm sure this all boils down to it being a crappy stereo system. Nothing like being on the freeway during the beginning of a long commute and having my music cut out on me and having to switch back over to the (ugh...) FM radio.

I have the same issue. Sound is clear, music plays fine, wheel commands work fine... even the contact list, which only showed partially (200 contacts or so), now shows all of them...
But Title/Artist/Album do not show up, only says Samsung S8.

I have the same issue, calls work, changing track, music playing, good quality of sound, contact info, full phonebook (on the S2 it was just 200 contacts or so).... but no media metadata! This is software issue and it seems that in other units than the Civic (maybe post AVCRP 1.3) it works...
I've got a new Honor 8 with the latest updates and one glaring issue. The bluetooth audio skips with my Kenwood KDC-X701 head unit, sometimes a whole song plays, sometimes I get a lot of random skips and pauses in the music like it's dropping connection. The phone is within 2 feet of the head unit so distance isn't an issue. I tried it key on engine off with everything else in the car turned off to rule out interference from anything else in the car like headlights, tail lights, alternator noise, etc. I connected it via the 3.5mm jack and had smooth playback without skipping so it's not an audio source issue. And just to rule out a BT issue with the phone, I connected to and had smooth audio with a generic Chinese BT puck in my home. This same head unit has had no issues streaming BT audio from an iPod Touch 5th gen so it's not simply a head unit with bad bluetooth, it's some kind of issue between the Honor 8 and the head unit. What I want to know is how to determine what BT protocol is in use between the Honor 8 and the head unit and then determine what BT protocol the iPod Touch used and see if there's some way to manually set how the Honor 8 connects via BT to the head unit.
Or is there something more simple I'm missing here? Some kind of power saving I need to turn off, some menu option I'm missing, I hope so.
I'm going to make sure the head unit is on the latest firmware, I believe it is but I'll check and report back if there was an update and if it did anything for the issue.
Ok so during a 5 minute call through the head unit tonight there were not any BT issues, so this must be a music specific BT protocol issue, I'm slowly getting closer to the root of it.
Seems putting it in the dash pocket directly below the head unit works better which is unnecessarily close (less than 4 inches away) and many times closer than the iPod Touch ever needed to be. So there's still some kind of issue but seems like I might have a work around, it only skipped twice in a 30 minute drive which is the best it's been.
8 hour drive today with only 5-7 drops an hour. Seems worse when I'm around a lot of traffic, sometimes or that could just be coincidence.
Sometimes it's also partly dropping, music keeps playing but other Bluetooth features aren't working like Google voice commands or making/taking calls. Weird!
