Best pocket cam?

Does anyone actually feel like the the MT4g Slide can replace your point & shoot camera?

Mine has. I take lots of photos and since picking up my MT4GS I don't take the point and shoot out with me anymore.

Bump.... anyone else? For example, I'm going on vaca to California and want to know if it is worth it to buy/bring a small camera.

My digitial camera is a bit older now, it's a kodak model I picked up from circuit city (yea, that should tell ya something if you live in the u.s.)
Even so, my digital camera is a 10 megapixel camera, and I think the ccd in it is better then the one in the phone. The HDR option on the phone makes it compare pretty closely though.
I'm not entirely sure about direct comparison of picture quality between the two yet, but comparing the stock camera app on this phone to my pocket camera - the answer is yes, it can replace my digital camera, for me.
The kodak was still an entry level camera at the time I bought it (around $150 several years ago) but it gives me more adjustment options in manual (program) mode.
Specifically: I can set my iso to 1600 and 3200 whereas the phone only goes up to 800 - and I use this at night to get better pictures in darkness.
A couple other small adjustments my digital camera offers me that the stock camera app doesn't for the phone. But really, this is the kind of nit-picking that says the next step up from the phone is a DSLR, at least for what I have.
The sweep shot option on the phone is many times better the the panoramic option offered on my digital camera, and the phone takes pictures much more quickly then the digital camera does.
The effect settings on the phone are pretty sweet, I can take the picture that way instead of adding it after the fact. Too, the phone will let me make some edits to my pictures using apps I can get (even some free ones that aren't bad.)
I am not sure of the quality being offered by current model digital cameras, but aren't they up to something like 14 megapixels now?
If you're trying to be a professional photographer, then just carrying around a phone as your camera is a joke. From the casual picture taker perspective, the phone is pretty awesome.
I suggest running around with it and snapping a whole mess of pictures where you live now. Take a day, and pretend you are a tourist in your own town. Find your local landmarks, or anything that looks cool in your town and snap pictures of it all.
(make sure to find one cool looking building, one cool looking tree, and snap some pictures of crowds and traffic)
Mess with the different modes and settings, and try to take the same picture multiple times with the different settings.
Come home and put all the pics on your computer, print a few out, and see how they look.
If you are only going to end up with 4x6 and 5x7 pictures that you print out when you're done, the camera is sufficient. If you are trying to make poster sized professional prints - get a DSLR.
From what it sounds like, though, the camera on the phone should be fine for you.

here are some pics I've taken with the MT4GS... has completely replaced my P&S cam since I bought it. quality isn't quite as good as most decent P&S cams I've used, but it's close enough that it makes sense not to haul another piece of tech around. overall, I'm impressed.. especially coming from the G2 which had a pretty lackluster camera.

Pics look good. How would indoor/party photos look?

Actually indoor photos are what surprise me the most. The low lighting performance is truly quite good for a phone. The only thing is that white balance tends to be a bit slow to kick in for some reason. When indoors or in a dark setting, the image will often start out very red. Point the camera at a white wall or something and the balance will fix itself right away.
Here are some photos taken indoors and/or with low lighting, no post editing done. Photos are lower quality because I'm taking them off of facebook:

BTW, the phone has an "autoenhance" feature which is enabled by default. I prefer to disable it. Basically it sharpens edges and removes noise, but imo it makes the image lose some of it's fidelity at higher zooms. I therefore prefer to turn off the feature. I enjoy doing post-work on my photos so I'd rather reduce noise in Photoshop if I need to (rarely).

Oh, and sorry for the double-post, but I will again re-emphasize turning off autoenhance unless you're taking photos in a really dark area and/or are tremendously averse to noise artifacts(which are still pretty minimal in most cases). While certainly it's no DSLR, nowhere near, it actually can replace most point and shoots and is the best phone camera you're going to find outside of the Nokia N8. Some say the Galaxy SII is just as good but I strongly disagree. Color fidelity is what matters the most to me in a portable camera(alongside decent sharpness) and this phone excels in that area imo. Besides, at the end of the day, it's the photographer that matters. Not to say you need to be a photographer, but use whatever light you have available smartly and you might be surprised with your results.

Sorry I don't take that many pictures of people lol, but they look good and the flash does a good job of illuminating without being harsh.
Also, as a general tip, if you actually want your pictures to look better than average, you can have a little fun in photoshop or GIMP. I am unfortunately nowhere near being able to afford a DSLR at the moment, so I tend to try to compensate with some post work with image editors. I'd much rather do these images the "real" way(and keen eyes can see the artificial details), but this camera is good enough to get some nice post-editing work for artistic effect.

So yea, I'm by no means a "real" photographer, but I enjoy putting a bit more effort into my photos than the average person, giving them a bit of my touch that goes further than, like, instagram. Put some thought into your shots, and you'll see the MT4GS will be a powerful tool

Seriously, I love this camera.

This has all been very helpful. Has anyone tried it in a party environment or really relied on it during vacation? Have you had any truly BAD results?

Any comments on how it performs with in your house pictures and kids?

Much of what is compared is outdoor pics which are not important to me. I am worried about indoor pictures and with kids, I can say the G2 I was just using and returned was not very good. Lots of noise, motion blur, even with lights on in my kitchen for example it would default to like 2200 ISO and made everything grainy.
Any comments on Nexus 5.

I took 2 shots at night in a lamp lit room. This will make the flash kick in.
I took one with flash and another in HDR. The HDR one actually made the room the "right" colour (as in what I see with my eyes) whilst the flash makes everything white.
Perhaps hdr quality is lower? What do you think?

I personally dislike using the on-board flash on the N5 (or any phone or camera for that matter) because it's so bright and washes out your subject. The HDR feature is nice to have, but requires a steady hand to keep the images sharp.
Of the shots I've taken with my N5 indoors under low light, the phone bumps the ISO up to 1624. This is in a room at night with a single desk lamp on (photo faces the room, not the desk). So naturally those shots were fairly grainy.
I've taken a few in the kitchen and the ISO sits under 200, so those shots are much more crisp. The N5 adjusts for the lighting pretty well, so unless your kitchen is quite dim, I would say you'll find the N5 to be an improvement.

To be honest was looking at the Z1 also and what I read is also not so good. I would rather go Nexus 5 over any other Android just worried about the 8M camera. Was trying to stay away from the Lumia 1020 despite it has the best camera. My perfect situation would be a Nexus with 20Meg camera and xenon flash.

for me it is a mixed bag : at school i took pictures of some course material and at home of my dog and they turned out great

However, i took a pic today inside a shopping center and the focus was off (it seems it focused on the background insted of the subject even if i manually selected the area)
I hope the new camera app will solve the focusing and relative slow shutter.

I guess it depends what you're planning to use the camera for. If it's for taking legitimate photos that you might want to print, I'm not sure if the N5 will fit the bill. But if that were the case then why not just invest in a point-and-shoot or even an entry level dSLR. They have become very powerful and quite affordable that it's a good option for any casual photographer.
If you're like me and just use your phone to capture random moments without needing to carry a point-and-shoot in your pocket at all times, then the N5 is good for this. Not the best camera on a phone out there, but coming from the N4 it's a huge improvement (although, that's not saying much). Plus, Google is supposedly working on a new camera api that will support RAW photos. Something to consider.

I'm personally really liking the camera. Camera is always my top priority and I've gone through five phones in the past year trying to find the complete package. I'm coming directly from a S7. While I wish the main camera has a few more tricks up its sleeve it is quick and I love how it animates and names collages etc from the app instead of having to upload the photos to google photos and do the processing there.

I agree...the low light shots aren't too great ....the dog pix have good detail in them. Does the camera shoot 1080p video at 60fps?

I'm going to be crying on the inside until my phone gets here in a month.
Well, I may continue to cry cuz the low-light capabilities won't miraculously get better.

I've been using this for a couple days and my thought are the LOW light shots aren't bad. It's the NO lights shots that it gets really grainy. And I'm ok with that. There aren't many times I'm taking pictures in almost absolutely no light. For LOW light like at a restaurant, bar, concert, on a street at night, etc. They are great

low light
An f/2.0 aperture is not really a low light sensor. And considering how tiny is the sensor, the Pixel XL does a great job.
A low light aperture is under 2, and each stop, or portion of stop like f/1.8, makes a huge difference.
My intention is not be be a pedant. I think many hope f/2.0 means far, far better low light capability than it actually imparts.
It needs some light.

I just notice the stupid Halo effect somebody was complaining about on one of my pictures.

Does anyone else have a problem withe front camera focusing properly? It seems to be unable to focus on things in the foreground for some reason and only focuses on the background, which makes everything in the front (like people's faces) seem soft and out of focus. Tested out some self portraits and at first, I thought maybe I was too close but no matter how far I stretched out my hand to take a pic, the background always seems to stay in focus.
Something might definitely be wrong with my front camera. I see pics of other people's front camera pics and they are very crispy, even in low light. Not only that, but the front camera pics I take seem to be shaky and blurry about half the time, like there is absolutely no image stabilization being used. I'm forced to do burst shots to compensate for this. Maybe my hands are too shaky? I never had a problem with this coming from an S6 though.

I like the image quality under certain conditions, but I'm getting super crazy haloing when there is even the least bit of light behind or off to the side of my photo target. It makes for some really crappy looking pictures when there is a huge opaque ring in my picture. Kinda disappointing.
I hear that this is supposed to be remedied with a software update. I hope this is true and I sure am looking forward to it.

Could someone test if it´s possible to shoot a clear picture of the moon with this device? Since there are no manual controls I would be interested in that. Shutterspeed in FV5 isn´t working, it doesn´t take a shot. And in my area there´s currently no moon to test it... Thanks!

what i found interesting is the rear camera takes pics @ 4:3 12 megapixels yet 16:9 are only at 8 megapixels ,where as my S7 Edge takes 16:9 12megapixels.....is there a setting im not using???

Looking to get this for my mom, but with all the photos I've seen, they're all just... INCREDIBLY DARK...

Dual rear cameras of Huawei Honor 7X works
After seeing these photos, I can only say rear cameras with 16MP f/2.2 and 2-mp works together. Though sometimes the supported light is not enough. But most of the time, it works fabulously.

Try using the front camera in normal lighting condition and than cry in a corner because it just sucks...?

Photos are really bad in lower light conditions. The Pixel Camera port is not available for this chipset
The screen is nice but camera plain sucks

Had mine few days 64GB/4GB blue and while yes it's a cosmetic upgrade over 6x I feel camera and performance isn't that much better some tweaking needed and yes low light is horrid

Honor 7x seems to be much promising but yet I am confused if it can perform better than Mi A1. Software is the thing that can revolutionize the hardware functionality like camera.

I'm confused why previous comments were saying the camera sucks. I'm coming from a Galaxy S7 and wasn't expecting much but honestly this thing takes great pictures. Very detailed and crisp in the right predicaments.

I came from a Note 5 and the 7X camera blows it away hands down. I have decent low light photos as well whereas my Note 5 and wife's LG Vista was absolutely horrible.

Yeah it's still not good as the S7 but it's definitely on par with or better than the S6. What more can I ask for. I was totally not expec much out of this camera and was pleasantly surprised. I don't have the lag most people complain about except soentimes opening the camera app. Can't wait til my Oreo OTA finally comes so that's gone.

Pretty decent. This was shot with the aperture function and set to f/1

It´s a cheap phone, so I didn´t expect too much. But after the camera of my Note 4, this phone´s camera is just poor. Very poor. I´m gonna get rid of it , and get my Note 4 fixed.

I really dislike the camera, and I wish that I had read a review about it before I bought the phone. There are two problems. 1) The resulting images are WAY to contrasty. Anything in shadow is pretty much black. Outdoor shots will have a well exposed sky and very dark to black ground. If someone's face has shadow on it, they will be unrecognizable. Which brings me to the second point... 2) The camera does not remember any of your settings when you open it again, except for the flash setting. For example, you can set HDR mode, but it will always revert back to standard mode, sorry! Other manufactures have their cameras remember HDR mode. Or, you can put it in "pro" mode and wade through the menu and move the contrast slider to help the "too much contrast" problem, but the camera won't remember that if you close it and you will have to do that every time you open the application again. I'm experimenting with other camera apps, but you will lose the special features that the phone camera has like the depth of field simulation with the second lens., and you can't use it with features like the "press volume twice to wake up and take a quick picture". I'm really disappointed with it.

Have anybody tried to shoot with custom rom? Can i see sample images? I just want to make sure before i buy it

So far so good. Pictures do look pretty near-term however they're not perfect by a long shot.
Admittedly I've been spoilt as I was using a pixel 2 before this, and low light images were a lot sharper, but not as well lot as the s9.
I think there can be a lot of improvement between the 1.5/2.4 aperture settings in regards to software tweaks.
Another thing I'd like to see is a much better portrait mode. Images look so soft and lack finer details. Compared to my pixel 2... well there really isn't a comparison at this point.
One thing I've noticed samsung cameras always do, is brighten up the face of the person in the photo. If you've got brown skin colour it tends to make them look too pale. I've seen reviewers say it can make the person almost look a bit ill! This happened on my note 8 also, and knowing what I know about South East Asian culture, it wouldn't surprise me if this was as intended as South East Asians do like to look paler, using cosmetics, filters or skin bleaching. So is the pale face as intended?
Anyhow, I'd say the camera has huge potential. Samsung just needs to do a lot of tweaking as irrefutable all the right hardware is there.

Yes, photo quality is good.

If I should be honnest, I expected a little bit better camera quality when I saw DX score and more....But now when I compare photos from S9+ to my note8, the colors looks a lot more faded, the most noticeable is in interior...Hmm I hope that update will fix it (Exynos version). What do you think?

There is no doubt on it overcomes iPhone. Great quality. Anyone should get it right now

I have shaky hands, and on Auto it's almost like there's no OIS. I get a lot of motion blur on things or blur in general. Sports mode fixes it, but it's really disappointing.

Not impressed with the auto 2.4 to 1.5 aperture here in the UK at least, it doesn’t seem to understand what low light is

The auto picture has a better dynamic range. Look at the window and you can see pictures outside but their airplane is a little dark

The whole picture looks dark

I did a S8+ (which I own) vs S9+ Camera quick comparison at my local shop... took some pictures in pro mode, same settings, same scene, both F1.5 and F2.4 for S9 (and of course fixed F1.7 for S8)...
S8 pictures are sharper (both RAW and JPEG) or better overall, with about the same noise... I am very disappointed.

This is awful. I mean, just ****ing awful. Coming from the V30 using the hacked GCam, this is major step down. Out of six shots I got one usable one.
If anyone knows what I'm doing wrong here with Auto Mode, I'm all ears because I'm tempted to take this thing back.

I think the camera quality is great overall..
But A small upgrade compares to note 8 not really camera reimagined
Olny issues i had are that some times photos are taken with low colors contrast then i fix them with auto color effect

I think there can be a lot of improvement between the 1.5/2.4 aperture settings in regards to software tweaks.
Another thing I'd like to see is a much better portrait mode. Images look so soft and lack finer details. Compared to my pixel 2... well there really isn't a comparison at this point.
One thing I've noticed samsung cameras always do, is brighten up the face of the person in the photo. If you've got brown skin colour it tends to make them look too pale. I've seen reviewers say it can make the person almost look a bit ill! This happened on my note 8 also, and knowing what I know about South East Asian culture, it wouldn't surprise me if this was as intended as South East Asians do like to look paler, using cosmetics, filters or skin bleaching. So is the pale face as intended?
Anyhow, I'd say the camera has huge potential. Samsung just needs to do a lot of tweaking as irrefutable all the right hardware is there.

So what? It's supposed to be. Your second picture is blowing out highlights and destroying tons of detail. The first picture might seem dimmer (especially compared to the second one), but it's preserving the details in all the areas of the photo. The 1.5 aperture is meant to cut down on noise and detail loss in very dark scenes, not create super bright images from moderately dim environments. It looks like the camera did exactly what it's supposed to do.
