I've been searching like crazy past couple of days but with no apparent luck. If not to take into account the countless bookmarks that I have been creating. God knows why.
The problem for me is that I have never used a GPS software and as far as I have been reading, it is either tracking/geocaching software without maps and/or with online maps. Or then GPS solution for car with offline maps. I can't read out from anywhere whether geocaching/tracking software is able to use cached google map tiles - these can be obtained, that much I know.
So, is it so common to use that no GPS software maker mentions the possibility to use offline google maps?
Or is that so reasonable solution (at least to my mind) for having a tracking/geocaching GPS software that can use cached/offline map tiles from google, simply something that nobody wants except me?
Please enlighten me...
There is at least 1 GPS software package that I know of that can use the cached Google maps, gpsVP, and it's free.
I don't know if this helps, but .....
Here's the link to the website.

Thanks for the hint. I've been searching also meanwhile and found these threads and the application called Mobile Gmaps, if anyone is interested.

NOTE: Mods I don't know exactly where to post this. Sorry.
I live in South Korea. I use Windows Mobile 6.1 on a Blackjack III(epix) Korean version. Yes, English programs install just fine. I have used Google Latitude for just over one year. Worked great. Then Latitude / Google Maps 4.0/4.1 came out. Since April I haven't been able to update my location from my phone. The "Join Latitude" is not available in the menus anywhere like it used to be. Now it's just generic Google Maps with GPS. NO latitude functionality whatsoever. To update my location I must log into google from a desktop. Yes, foolish.
Has anyone else had similar problems? Any solutions? I'm looking for a Latitude 3 cab if anyone has it, I'd love to have it and see if it still works. I regret updating to 4.
Really sucks being a lone exception...
I have not found anyone else online having this problem.
Today as soon as I opened my Android Market app in my HTC Desire, it showed me that and update for Google Maps version 5.5.0 is available. And I was able to update it without any problem.
But later I did a factory reset of my phone because the Mobile security in my phone was malfunctioning (not because of new google maps) from last few days due to some unknown reasons.
After reset I was expecting to get the google maps updated automatically, but unfortunately it did not. I am afraid why it is so?
I was eagerly waiting for the update form last so many months, and finally when I got it, I lost it even before I could explore it nicely.
Please tell me I you have any idea how can I retrieve my update to version 5.5.0? Or any suggestions related to the matter.
Thanks a lot.
Dunno, go to the market, find Google Maps and tap on update? What am I missing here?
the thing is that it first has to register that you haven't updated google maps - after downloading it today, they registered on the server that you had already recieved it.
best thing to do is to go to market.google.com and try there to download google maps there; it will check the version and when it sees the old version, will override to update!
Got market enabler from market, fake provider like T-Mobile, install as usual.

Just installed it and loving it. Supposedly will only run on 4.2 or higher unless you wait for the official update on play store. I was waiting for this so figured I would share the knowledge.

My HTC One on AT&T has not gotten the Maps update yet. I downloaded the APK from Androidpolice and it's working, but now I read there is a 7.0.1 update where they added the Offline maps selection when viewing the map (as opposed to having to type "Ok Maps" in the first release). However, I cannot find an updated APK for Android 4.1.2 devices... the two APK's I downloaded which were 7.0.1 could not be parsed because I'm not on 4.2. Anyone know where I can find the 7.0.1 APK for Android 4.1.2?
Also, for those of you with HTC One's, can you confirm whether addresses from the Phone application will open the new Google Maps app? On my device, if I click on an address from the Phone/Contacts app, it doesn't do anything now, whereas before it would open the address in Google Maps (on the older version).
Anyone else?

Same here. Actually, when I tap an address in contacts, it opens at&t navigator, which I am not using. I disabled it and now nothing happens at all when you tap the address. I was hoping that by disabling the at&t navigator it would default back to Google maps.
Also, if you just tap in the empty search bar, it will bring up the information cards. Just scroll down to the bottom and the option to store the map offline is already there in this version.

Yeah, somehow the contacts app just lost connection to the maps app with this version, so even if you don't have another app set as default, it just does nothing when you click an address. My initially was opening Glympse because I had that installed, but even after uninstalling it, it still isn't opening Maps. Definitely a bug between the HTC contacts app and the new Maps... which means it's probably not going to fixed for some time. I'm hoping that the upcoming HTC One update to 4.2 will fix it... but who knows when AT&T will be rolling that out. I'm not interested at this time in rooting my phone and installing a custom rom to try to fix this.
Thanks for the tip about the offline maps setting, I found it.
EDIT: There is still a way to get a contact address to appear in the new maps. Just start typing the name of the contact that has an associated address and it'll show up in the search results. Not as convenient, but at least it's a workaround for now!
I like it but driving along the navigation lags behind where I actually am

I received the 7.0.1 update through the Play store this afternoon (I'm on AT&T stock 4.1.2). When I click on addresses in Contacts it gives me the option to open the address with AT&T Navigator or Waze but not Maps. Not sure what the behavior was with earlier versions of Maps because I never tried it before now.

The correct behavior would be to ask you what app to use for links, including the Maps app. But since the link to Maps is broken, it is just asking you amongst your other compatible apps. If you don't have any other compatible apps, it will do nothing when you select an address.
Note that this just happens in the Phone/Contacts app though in Sense. If you use Chrome or another Google app that has an address or map link, it will still open in the new Maps. So it might be something HTC has to fix, or it might be something just broken with the API in the new Maps app. Only time will tell, but as I mentioned, you can start typing a contact name in the new Maps app, and it will show the address, so that's a workaround for now.
I had to uninstall and reinstall old version. If I zoom out past a certain point, the map doesn't render.. I'm on ARHD 12 if that matters.

It's hard to say whether it's your custom rom or not, but the maps renders fine at all zoom levels on my HTC One running 4.1.2 stock.
Hello everyone.
I would like this post to reach more people on XDA who could solve it.
Since I received the update to Harmony OS 3.0 on my Chinese Mate 30 Pro 5G, all those apps that use Google maps for geolocation do not work.
I'm typing this thread here because I'm looking for people who has got this issue like me.
Examples like WhatsApp for location sharing, Wallapop, SocialDrive, etc. None of them work with Google maps. I get a message: "Updating Google Play Services", and it does absolutely nothing else.
I have Google Services installed on my Mate 30 Pro almost natively with the Googlefier and MicroG method from Eloy Gomez, a Spanish developer, and everything was perfect until Harmony OS 2.0
After Harmony OS 3.0 update no longer.
I am attaching a screenshot of one of my weather apps where it does not show the Google map and therefore does not work and another of sharing location by WhatsApp using Google Maps.
Has anyone who has experienced the same issue been able to fix it ??
Or has someone from XDA who has experienced the same issue been able to solve it?
